Let's keep this short and sweet. There are a TON of new releases. There are also a heaping handful of GREAT concerts this week. Do yourself a favor and do a little from column A, a little from column B. Read on for all the goods... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/18/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Be Your Own Pet - Get Awkward (Ecstatic Peace) ................................................................... Get Awkward is the sophomore full-length from Nashville foursome Be Your Own Pet. The songs remain fast and loud, totally wired and tantalizingly brief. Applying the dubious word "mature" is open for heated debate - string arrangements and soppy ballads are blessedly absent but the music definitely reflects a sharp increase in experience. Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior (Tempa) ................................................................... If Burial's Untrue dominated your end of year charts, then it's odds on Diary Of An Afro Warrior might do the same in '08. Dubstep's trickle into the mainstream has been steady; Skream and Burial alike have nudged the door open. Benga could be the force to smash through it. Much more than just a straight dubstep album, the tracks on Diary have been favorably compared to such names as Carl Craig, Underground Resistance, Reprazent and Massive Attack. 14 tracks on the CD. 3LP has a different track listing, with 5 tracks not found on the CD but only 9 tracks in total. Clark - Turning Dragon (Warp) ................................................................... Chris Clark earned his reputation as one of the most adventurous dance producers with a catalog of twists and turns that owe just as much to the avant-garde as they dod to the dancefloor. On Dragon however, it's the dancefloor that receives most of the attention from this collection of turbocharged tracks. Destroyer - Trouble in Dreams (Merge) ................................................................... This release cements Vancouver, BC's Dan Bejar as an artist as quirky and enigmatic as David Bowie, as symphonic and grandiose as Scott Walker, and as quixotically literary as Bob Dylan. A collection of songs that is fresh and confounding, yet befitting the Destroyer canon. "Of all contemporary songwriters, he's been the biggest influence and inspiration. Because he is pretentious, but in a way that makes it into a game where we all get to pretend to be so grand" - Okkervil River's Will Sheff Devotchka - A Mad and Faithful Telling (Anti) ................................................................... This multi-instrumental outfit fuses Gypsy, Greek, Slavic, and Mariachi influences with American punk and folk roots. In 2006, they scored "Little Miss Sunshine", garnering 4 Academy Award nominations, and earned a Grammy nod for Best Soundtrack. Their stage set up is fortified by sousaphone, accordion, piano, violin, bouzouki, upright bass, percussion, trumpet, drums and Theremin. The live experience includes trumpeters appearing out of the crowd, the band climbing offstage and playing in the center of the audience, and trapeze aerialists suspended from theater ceilings. The Dodos - Vister (French Kiss) ................................................................... Throw together a country-blues-loving guitarist and a metalhead drummer and you get the Dodos, a fascinating psych-folktronic duo. Guitarist and singer Meric Long layers evocative feedback over pretty acoustic picking, while drummer Logan Kroeber mixes primitive, thumping beats with intricate pitter-patter. The propulsive results recall everything from John Fahey to the Akron/Family. That's not even mentioning Long's voice, a sweet clarion call like Elliott Smith without all the heroin and suicide; or Long's lyrics, which chronicle complex relationships with acuity. - SF Weekly Evangelista (Carla Bozulich) - Hello, Voyager (Constellation) ................................................................... Carla Bozulich, onetime Geraldine Fibber and Ethyl Meatplow-er and half of Scarnella (with Wilco guitarist Nels Cline) has forged yet another path for herself. Evangelista, her latest musical endeavor, was christened after her 2006 solo LP of the same name. Voyager was recorded in Montreal at the Hotel2Tango by Efrim Menuck (GYBE, etc), with an even larger cast of Montreal musicians joining Carla and co this time around, to work up a more diverse batch of songs. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrsing (ATP) ................................................................... These Buttons employ their arsenal of vintage Casios, toy microphones, FX Pedals and found percussion in the service of brain-scouring noise. Three years of increasingly assured live dates have seen the duo hone their compositional skills to a hypnotic effect, moving away from abrasive abstraction towards a carefully plotted, widescreen euphoria. Recorded with Mogwai's John Cummings and Part Chimp's Tim Cedar, then mastered by Shellac's Bob Weston, Street Horrsing is a melange of irredescent synths, psychedelic drone, distorted vocals and tribal rhythm, peaking with the deftly layered counter melodies and blissed-out propulsion. RIYL Liars. Catch em opening for Caribou on May 2 at the Waldron. Adam Green - Sixes and Sevens (Rough Trade) ................................................................... Green is formerly one half of Moldy Peaches (with Kimya Dawson). This is his 5th solo album. His music is reminiscent of Bacharach and Brel, and he's created his own brand of playful pop while refining it with each release. "A queasy mix of super-sharp realism, clammy surrealism, and elegant melody" - Mojo Jarboe & Justin K Broadrick - J2 (The End) ................................................................... J2 is the much-anticipated ambient musical exploration from singer/songwriter/performer Jarboe (ex-Swans) and Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh), a collaboration fueled by a unique and diverse energy. A true marriage of extremes that is never less than mesmerizing. Daniel Lanois - Here Is What Is (Red Floor) ................................................................... The remarkable 6th solo album from Lanois. An acclaimed singer also known for producing some of the greatest albums of the last two decades (U2, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Neville Brothers, etc), Lanois has created an album full of viscerally powerful and beautiful new tracks that rank amongst his best. Recorded with drummer Brian Blade and pianist Garth Hudson (The Band). The album also includes philosophical interludes and inspiring conversations with Brian Eno taken from the film by the same name. Mission of Burma - Definitive Editions (Matador) ................................................................... Mission Of Burma's first 3 records are landmarks of American underground guitar rock. They are now finally re-released the way they were intended to be heard, meticulously remastered from the original analog tapes. All 3 are available on LP for the first time since the 1980s. Both versions come with lavish booklets full of interviews, photos and ephemera. In addition, 'Signals' includes 2 unreleased tracks from the "Academy Fight Song" single, the original studio version of "Execution" and a completely unheard song called "Devotion." Both versions come with bonus DVDs of original concert footage. Mojo Magazine - April 2008 - Rolling Stones Cover ................................................................... Revisit the Stones of 1968 and their new concert film Shine A Light. Plus Jackson Browne, Black Crowes, Shirley Collins, Roxy Nightclub, Harry Nilsson and much much more from this wonderful mag. Comes with free CD of the new dictionary of Blues and Soul music. Neon Neon - Stainless Style (Lex) ................................................................... A new group consisting of Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys (frontman for Super Furry Animals). The album features Spank Rock, Yo Majesty, Fabrizio Moretti and a host of friends adding instrumentation. The project is themed around the life of John Z DeLorean - the man behind the iconic DMC 12 "Back to the Future" car and known for his playboy high society celebrity status. Stainless Style embodies all the elements of great modern style pop. The final product is filled with big hooks, melodic synths, bouncing crunk and dance bangers. Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves - Take My Love with You 45 (Q Division) ................................................................... Love the recent soul revival sound? Look no further - Reed, who in truth does look like a 16-year-old paperboy, has prodigious vocal gifts, with impressive range, spot-on falsetto whoops and gospel shouts, and utter fearlessness at expressing the rawest emotions. You can't quite decide if he reminds you more of Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding or Jackie Wilson. Coming for a repeat Bears Place performance next month. Retribution Gospel Choir - s/t (Caldo Verde) ................................................................... Low visionary Alan Sparhawk cranks the amps for a radical stylistic departure. Crude, mangy guitars collide with trudging stoner-rock rhythms and some catchy melodies - for modern day spirituals that defy all preconceptions. Produced by Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek for maximum impact, it will surprise and delight fans of Low as well as those new to the music of Alan Sparhawk. She & Him (M. Ward & Zooey Deschanel) - Volume 1 (Merge) ................................................................... This is the musical debut from M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, paired together by director Martin Hayens to perform the Richard and Linda Thompson tune "When I Get To The Border" for his film "The Go-Getter". Their match sparked the idea for Volume One. Tall Firs - Too Old To Die Young (Ecstatic Peace) ................................................................... A muscularity that recalls Neil Young in one of his more ornery moods, or a beefed-up Galaxie 500. - Guardian UK. Too Old to Die Young brings this muscularity to the friendly confines of your private listening environment. Their duo vocals are moody, without squawking in that already dated freak-folk style; the guitars are occasionally colored by chimes, organ and brushed drums. The high, lonesome shiver of an old Townes Van Zandt record, except without any obvious country affectations. The Teenagers - Reality Check (XL) ................................................................... This French trio's sound is built around a backbone of golden pop melodies, enveloped in a sardonic wit and lingering Sofia Coppola soft focus. Similar to most filthy mouthed teens, "Reality Check" is full of foul innuendos and lyrics that would make Serge Gainsbourg blush. With its nonchalant and biting humor, this record is a 21st Century lo-fi French pop backdrop, awash in guitar hooks and soaring electro synth riffs. These New Puritans - Beat Pyramid (Domino) ................................................................... This full-length debut of four 19 year-olds from the UK was recorded with Gareth Jones - the producer of albums by Einsturzende Neubauten, Liars, and Wire - and its songs are an ever-mutating blur of brash chords, subtle details, and taut rhythms, borne of influences as disparate as early 80's industrial music to numerology, from This Heat to Dubsteb, and from J. Dilla to David Lynch. Witch - Paralyzed (Tee Pee) ................................................................... Witch is Dave Sweetapple (bass), J Mascis (drums, Dinosaur Jr), and Kyle Thomas (guitar/vocals, Feathers), but they're no indie-metal super group or side project; that would underestimate the band members' commitment. This follow-up to their 2006 self-titled debut remains true to the classic heavy rock sound of the first, but has evolved as the band has learned to play to each other's strengths. They've returned to their punk roots and attack with a more aggressive tempo. This record burns with hostility. STAFF PICKS! These are all available at Landlocked right now! Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Aidan John Moffat - I Can Hear Your Heart (Chemikal Underground, 2008) ................................................................... Not for the weak of heart... Aidan Moffat's debut solo recording comes after a decade of work with lecherous Scottish duo Arab Strap. Whereas Malcolm Middleton's post-Strap work took him towards a pop world, I Can Hear Your Heart presents Aidan as a writer of prose more than simply a musician. An attached book is to be read first, followed by the recording. Tales of drunken encounters at pubs, relationships gone sour, guilt and remorse. Over 36 minutes he guides you through his world of shags, pints, fights and lust at a quickly moving pace. Simple background noise and home-recorded music adds to the stories, and its all an eerily wide open look into his heart, letting you in on his confessions to girls, explanations to one night stands, love letters never delivered to strangers, and even a forgot the words intoxicated sing-along version of Springsteen's Hungry Heart. RIYL Arab Strap, Jim Carroll, Shane McGowan, Serge Gainsbourg, Tindersticks. - Heath The Buckaroos - Best of the Buckaroos (Sundazed, 2007) ................................................................... One of the most versatile bands in country music, the Buckaroos are best known as Buck Owens' backing band, but they cut a number of great LPs under their own name in the 60s. This excellent comp brings together many of the highlights. About half feature vocals: sometimes handled by Buck himself, other times guitarist Don Rich sings. But where they really shine are on the instrumentals. Rich and pedal steel guitarist Tom Brumeley trade licks like they've been playing together since the nursery. They tear through a series of styles, from moonlight exotica to chicken-pickin' honky tonk to something approaching surf rock. Fans of guitarist like Chet Atkins and Les Paul as well as the Ventures or Speedy West will find much to love. Also, fans of the Flying Burrito Bros. are seriously remiss without the Buckaroos in their library. - Jason Alexander Spence - Oar (Columbia, 1969: Sundazed, 2000) ................................................................... "Skip" Spence was the heart and soul of one of the best 60s bands, San Francisco's own Moby Grape. After falling under the psychedelic spell of a girl who was allegedly deep into black magic, he attacked the door to his bandmates' hotel room with an axe and was carted off to Bellevue Mental Hospital in NY. It was during this stay that Skip composed the songs which make his lone solo classic. According to legend, upon his release, Skip convinced the people at Columbia to buy him a guitar, amp and a motorcycle on which he could ride to Nashville and record his album. A great story that adds to the overall impact of this amazing piece of work. Recorded and performed entirely by Spence on a 3-track recorder, I have never heard anything that sounds quite like 'Oar.' Bouncing from serious, prison-cell ruminations to goofy wordplays to simply transcendantly gorgeous songs. This album is so uniquely amazing that it's really hard to do it justice in words, it must be listened to. - Cyrus ------------------------------------------------------------------ Upcoming Bloomington shows that Landlocked Music is excited about: 3/18 - Old Time Relijun @ Bluebird 3/19 - Man Man @ Waldron 3/20 - Islands @ Rhino's 3/21 - The Dirtbombs / Kelley Stoltz @ Jake's 3/24 - Monotonix @ Festers 3/27 - Le Loup / Ruby Suns @ Waldron 3/27 - Murder by Death @ Rhino's 3/29 - Throw Me the Statue / Bodies of Water @ Art Hospital 4/2 - Why? @ Bears 4/3 - Grand Buffet @ Statehouse 4/7 - Okkervil River / Howlin Rain @ Buskirk-Chumley 4/8 - Cursive @ Rhino's 4/9 - Minus Story @ Bears 4/9 - Flosstradamus @ Buskirk-Chumley 4/11 - Feist / Hayden @ IU Auditorium 4/15 - Minus the Bear @ Bluebird 4/17 - Live From Bloomington Club Night 4/18 - Live From Bloomington All-Ages Club Night 4/19 - WIUX Culture Shock @ Dunn Meadow 4/24 - Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos @ Buskirk-Chumley 4/25 - Eli "Paperboy" Reed @ Bears 4/26 - Nomo @ Bluebird 4/29 - Dead Meadow @ Bluebird 5/1 - Dead to Fall @ Rhino's 5/2 - Caribou @ Waldron 5/7 - Megafaun @ Bear's 5/13 - Rev Horton Heat / Nashville Pussy @ Bluebird We have tickets and further information for many of these wonderful performances.
