Wow quite a week for new releases, just in time for the amazing weather and uhhh Little 5? Be sure to save up some of your energy and funds for the ton of great live shows coming on the horizon. Not to mention Culture Shock and Boxcar Prom and Record Store Day - which ALL fall on next Saturday, April 19th. Whoa. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 4/8/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Boredoms - Super Roots 9 (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Long regarded as musical pioneers, Boredoms have continually pushed sonic boundaries and inspired musicians for over 20 years. This is their first live release, recorded Christmas Eve 2004 in Japan with a 24-piece choir. Packaged in a deluxe custom made LP-style mini-gatefold jacket, and containing a 40-page perfect bound booklet with music scores and notations. Boredoms member Yoshimi also fronts the band OOIOO who have released numerous albums on Thrill Jockey. The Breeders - Mountain Battles (4AD) ................................................................... By turns goofy, groovy, melancholy, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric, and at times, impossibly lovely, "Mountain Battles" underlines that Kim Deal is a songwriter and musician of rare intuition. Her songs move from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace, balancing scuffed-up noise against fraught silence; timeless structures against strange new shapes. And throughout is Kim's unique voice - languid, urgent, bruised, and beautiful. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig (Anti) ................................................................... Last seen under the gleeful guise of Grinderman, a no-nonsense rock'n'roll excuse to head down to the basement and shout, now Nick Cave returns to his full time Bad Seeds co-conspirators for this release. "Grinderman was deliberately spare and the concepts were pretty simple," explains Cave. "With 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' we allowed ourselves to get expansive." It picks up where Grinderman left off, filled with Stoogified electric guitar, driving beats, and Cave's literate, seductive, and firmly tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Clinic - Do It (Domino) ................................................................... Their fifth studio album is a summer album, a warped Technicolor celebration - pop music and severe cut-ups going from melody to acid psychosis to acoustic, usually in the same song. "Do It!" is a skewed pop amalgam of Motown, Exuma, Monks, deep lounge, and The Balloon Farm, amongst many. Songs about living for the day, love, escaping witchhunts, and more. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours (Modular) ................................................................... At once both jacking and jangly, electronic and organic, Cut Copy have crafted a record filled with glorious sounds and moods but also unabashedly pop song structures and hooks and melodies for eons. The progression from 'Bright Like Neon Love' is brazenly apparent from the opening track, an acoustic guitar led stomp of a space rock tune, instantly unforgettable and recognizable. Dead Child - Attack (Quarter Stick) ................................................................... Dead Child have birthed a truly supreme metal masterwork. "Attack" grew out of pure frustration - the band was sick of the vulnerable, pompous music of recent years, instead jonesing for the pure and simple chops-oriented music of their formative days. It's all serious. No cookie monster vox; full of thundering drums and anthemic riffs. It's epic and it's real. A venomous assault. Featuring Dave Pajo (Slint, Zwan, Papa M, etc) and playing Culture Shock next weekend! Foals - Antidotes (Sub Pop) ................................................................... This is the debut from Oxford, England's five-piece dance-rock band. Completing the circuit between the minimalism of American composer Steve Reich, guitars that sound like insects, and tennis player Andy Roddick, theirs is a uniquely winning formula. Driving percussion high in the mix, guitars played above the 12th fret, no chords, and splashes of synth color all come together like the schematics for a piece of precision engineering. The Heavy - Great Vengeance & Furious Fire (Counter) ................................................................... If you like your soul served with dirty beats, distorted vocals and big blazing guitars, this is one for you. Cluttered up with a nice falsetto, stomping beats and a horn samples. They also nail the bedroom downtempo folk thing, unleash buzzing fuzz guitars and feedback and get tender on the skittering closer. What one might imagine a meeting between Joe Jackson and the Streets to sound like. RIYL Pop Levi, David Vandervelde. Man Man - Rabbit Habits (Anti) ................................................................... Man Man have found the perfect berth for their gypsy-swamp carny-soul Viking-vaudeville punk collective. This record matches the fierce energy of their non-stop live shows, which utilize a variety of more traditional instruments (accordion, Moog, xylophone) along with such noisemakers as soup pots, shoes, squeaky toys, and a fire extinguisher. With a following that sells out clubs coast to coast and with a kinetic stage presence, Man Man are a musical contagion waiting to happen. Colin Meloy - Sings Live (Kill Rock Stars) ................................................................... A 14-song set documenting The Decemberists' lead singer's 2006 solo tour. In contrast to the band's live gigs, this live solo album presents him in a stripped down, acoustic setting. Of the thirteen Meloy originals, two are previously unreleased compositions, "Dracula's Daughter" and "Wonder". Along the way, he employs snippets of songs from The Smiths, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and REM. The collection also captures ample between-song banter. Microphones - Glow Pt. 2 (2CD/3LP reissue) (K) ................................................................... Comparisons to the Elephant 6 collective firmly aside, The Glow Pt. 2 transcends psyche-pop and lo-fi tags to blossom as the most actualized and daring album of the Microphones’ young career. Peter Moren - The Last Tycoon (Quarter Stick) ................................................................... This is Peter Moren's (of Peter Bjorn & John) highly anticipated first solo record. It features a more acoustic, low-key side of Peter than fans of the ubiquitous indie anthem "Young Folks" are used to hearing. Built around the basic foundation of Peter and his guitar, the album has a homemade feel that feeds from the folk singer-songwriter tradition but still incorporates strings, synths, vibraphones, percussion, a musical saw, and a drum machine or two. Nadja - Desire in Uneasiness (Crucial Blast) ................................................................... Five colossal jams of eternally-fuzzy, ethereal dirge that is powered by the interlocking bass guitars of Leah Buckareff and Aidan Baker, setting loose a wave of monstrous grinding bass riffs amidts a fog of beautiful, swirling electronic effects. Desire also marks the first Nadja album to feature a live drummer in place of the drum machine. It takes Nadja's music into new realms of spacious jazzy exploration, dubby rhythms and cavernous psychedelia, while also delivering some of the band's most grooving, crushing hypno-bliss yet. Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I - IV (Null) ................................................................... CD/LP version of Trent's recent internet experiment. It contains 36 instrumental tracks. Initially intended to be a five-track EP, the album is presented in the form of 4 nine-track instrumental EPs. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Pershing (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... Their follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Broom." Spin declared them the band that "could succeed The Shins" and enthusiastic press rolled in. Now, they're raising the bar even higher with "Pershing". Quirky chord changes amid massive hooks and addictive melodies. Spoon - Don't You Evah (single) (Merge) ................................................................... The new single from "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga". With a new b-side, a video and remixes of the song from Diplo, Matthew Dear, DJ Amaze, Ted Leo, and Doc Delay. Tapes 'n Tapes - Walk It Off (XL) ................................................................... Tapes 'N Tapes' signature sound is distinctly their own concoction: shaky vocals, bursts of lo-fi guitars, and haunting keyboard refrains. Jittery rock that's found the sweet spot where experimental song structure meets melodic accessibility. "The album...is unique in an era of slick 80s chic, mixing the opaque jams of Pavement with the bruised-teen freakiness of The Pixies, while adding cocktail jazz and Tex-Mex folk music like thrift store finds" - Spin Wye Oak - If Children (Merge) ................................................................... Wye Oak believes if a song is good enough, it will stand on its own regardless of how much noise you put on top of it. Lush guitars, flawless harmonies, and evocative lyrics are amplified by the layers of noise proving the truth of this philosophy. If Children has hints of shoegaze and glimmers of folk, but its resounding characteristic is a refreshingly unique sound from this young band who, like the tree that stood for over 400 years, will continue to grow and change while extolling their Maryland roots. VA - Imaginational Anthem Volume 3 (Tompkins Square) ................................................................... Imaginational Anthem Vol. 3, the third in a series of compilations devoted to acoustic guitar mavericks past and present. As with Volumes 1 & 2, the new album features extraordinary young talents alongside unsung heroes from decades past, such as banjo master George Stavis, who recorded an album for Vanguard in the 60's; Richard Crandell, whose private press works will hopefully now be brought to light; and Mark Fosson, whose lost 1977 Takoma album was recently issued. Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. John - Gris-Gris (Atco, 1968; Collector's Choice, 2000) ................................................................... Sounding exactly like I imagine a voodoo ceremony in the middle of a torch-lit Louisiana swamp would sound like, Dr. John's 1968 debut album 'Gris-Gris' is one of the most unique albums to come out of the 60s. I've never heard an album with quite the same vibe as this one. The Dr.'s amazing witch-doctor vocal delivery cuts right through the foggy mist created by the backing track, a swirling mix of tribal drums, strange chants, mandolins, horns and piano, all wrapped up in a disorienting cloud of reverb. I bought this album because of the strange cover art and was completely blown away by the music inside, not sounding much like the funky, tuneful Dr. John I had become familiar with. It's definitely more experimantal and trippy than his other work, but the songs are still great and full of hooks. Recommended for anybody looking for an entirely different and utterly amazing album to spice up their collection. - Cyrus Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull (Southern Lord, 2008) ................................................................... Over 7 instrumental tracks Earth prove their name: elemental, heavy, dirty. Slow-motion panoramas across a western ghost town. Beautiful landscapes, long-soaks of color that burn like molasses on the dashboard. While many might be turned off at the pacing (think Low level slow), patience pays off greatly for those able to face the journey. The guitars are Floydian in their massiveness, but the idiom is much more Big Sky than Deep Space. Grounded and spacious yet still psychedelic in tone, Earth have created an album of cinematic scope that is ominous and timeless. A call from the mesa to the clouds, the sun, the desert. Featuring guitar legend Bill Frisell guesting on 3 songs. RIYL Ennio Morricone, Jonathan Kane. - Heath ------------------------------------------------------------------ Upcoming Bloomington shows that Landlocked Music is excited about: 4/8 - Cursive @ Rhino's 4/8 - Galactic w/ Mr Lif @ Bluebird 4/9 - Minus Story @ Bears 4/9 - Flosstradamus @ Buskirk-Chumley 4/11 - Feist / Hayden @ IU Auditorium 4/15 - Minus the Bear @ Bluebird 4/16 - Woven Hand @ Art Hospital 4/17 - Live From Bloomington Club Night 4/18 - Live From Bloomington All-Ages Club Night 4/19 - WIUX Culture Shock @ Dunn Meadow 4/23 - Drakkar Sauna / Oakley Hall @ Bears 4/24 - Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos @ Buskirk-Chumley 4/24 - Toots & the Maytals @ Bluebird 4/25 - Eli "Paperboy" Reed @ Bears 4/26 - Nomo @ Bluebird 4/26 - Half-Handed Cloud @ Art Hospital 4/29 - Dead Meadow @ Bluebird 5/1 - Dead to Fall @ Rhino's 5/2 - Caribou @ Waldron 5/6 - Lymbyc Systym @ Art Hospital 5/7 - Megafaun @ Bear's 5/13 - Rev Horton Heat / Nashville Pussy @ Bluebird 5/16 - Yea Big + Kid Static @ Bear 5/19 - Joe Lally @ Art Hospital 5/28 - Castanets Film @ Cinemat We have tickets and further information for many of these wonderful performances.
