Thanks to everyone who helped make the first annual Record Store Day a HUGE success! We have never seen so many people through our door in one day since opening weekend - it makes us all warm and tingly. And you let the rest of the "digi-world" know that people still want shops like ours around! If you missed the celebration, stop in soon - we still have a small supply of free stuff as well as some of the limited edition releases for sale. Carry on... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 4/22/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Barry Adamson - Back to the Cat (Central Control) ................................................................... Back to the Cat is the work of one of the most original, inventive, distinctive voices in British contemporary music at the height of his considerable powers. With a full consignment of brass and strings and a wealth of musicology behind him, Adamson's 8th album is where it all comes together: a life's passions poured into 10 tracks that at once sound strangely familiar and dazzlingly new. A musical odyssey through noir jazz, sun-drenched pop ballads, fractious urban funk, devilish gospel, heavenly blues, and subversive soul ... not to mention a Hammond organ salute to the late, great Jimmy Smith. Atmosphere - When Live Gives You Lemons (Rhymesayers) ................................................................... The prolific duo of Slug and Ant offer their sixth studio album, presenting their storytelling, songwriting, and musicality at its finest. Limited deluxe edition packaged as a 40-page gold embossed hard cover book featuring an illustrated children's story written by Slug. Bonus DVD with over an hour of live footage and extras. Billy Bragg - Mr. Love & Justice (Anti) ................................................................... In his 25 years carrying the torch of social justice, Bragg has melded the folksy populism of Woody Guthrie with the anger and indignation of The Clash. Despite the intense politics behind his songs, Billy has never lost sight of the power of personal relationships to hold us together and bring about the kind of redemption that outstrips even the greatest political movements. Musically, this record combines the loose, Stonesy groove Bragg found working with Wilco on the "Mermaid Ave." sessions, with the best parts of his punk and music hall roots. Elvis Costello & the Imposters - Momofuku (Lost Highway) ................................................................... Elvis Costello's new studio album Momofuku is at this point to be released on vinyl only, with a digital download code included. The new Lost Highway release follows 2004's The Delivery Man, Costello's debut on the label with his band the Imposters. Since then, Costello recorded The River in Reverse with pianist Allen Toussaint and supervised the first wave of his back-catalog reissues through Universal. Wait for the CD if ya like. El Perro Del Mar - From the Valley to the Stars (Control Group) ................................................................... El Perro Del Mar is the alter ego of Sarah Assbring. Her second album is an opus, chock full of non-traditional folk songs that explore the world at large that will appeal to fans of Lykke Li, Jens Lekman and Hanne Hukkelberg. She's joined at times on the record by members of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphonic Choir. Flight of the Conchords - S/T (Sub Pop) ................................................................... This acclaimed Kiwi novelty band follow the release of their 6-track Grammy Award-winning EP " with their full-length debut. Features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of the duo's concerts and TV favorites. Bret and Jemaine's trademark acoustic guitars lead the blitz, backed by a diverse array of instrumentation and production technique. If amazing, delightful, and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment. These 15 songs pay homage to Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments. Neil Hamburger - Sings Country Winners (Drag City) ................................................................... America's hardest working and most profoundly suffering funnyman, finally has his first musical release! Yes, Mr. Hamburger sings Country Music (we're talking vintage Country). But since Senor Hamburger is a humorist, these songs are played straight but are lyrically skewed. Features 'Three Piece Chicken Dinner', 'Please Ask That Clown To Stop Crying' and 'How Can I Still Be Patriotic (When They've Taken Away My Right To Cry)'. Vijay Iyer - Tragicomic (Sunnyside) ................................................................... Sunnyside presents Vijay's long-awaited new quartet disc, his first since 2005's stunningly acclaimed "Reimagining." Featuring the same longstanding ensemble (Iyer, saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, bassist Stephan Crump, and drummer Marcus Gilmore), the album includes ten Iyer originals and two astonishing covers: a rhythmically charged dub version of Bud Powell's "Comin' Up" and a solo rendition of the standard "I'm All Smiles." Love - Forever Changes (2CD Collector's Edition) (Rhino) ................................................................... Disc 1 presents the original album, remastered. Disc 2 features over 77 minutes of mostly unreleased bonus material; including an alternate mix of the entire album, previously unissued except for the stand-out closing track, You Set The Scene. Also features 10 additional tracks including unreleased outtakes of Wonder People (Do I Wonder) and Wooly Bully, a mono remix of Alone Again Or, tracking sessions highlights from The Red Telephone and more. Lyrics Born - Everywhere At Once (Anti) ................................................................... Lyrics Born has long been known for his innovative beats, creative collaborations, and soulful vocals. Here he takes a giant leap forward in song craft, incorporating elements such as pop, reggaeton, and R&B. It's the rare MC who can bridge the gap between hip-hop and alt-rock, owning the crowd at Bonnaroo and Bumbershoot as easily as he trades rhymes with Charlie 2na. Monotonix - Body Language (Drag City) ................................................................... This highly anticipated EP from explosive Tel Aviv-based punk trio Monotonix includes six powerhouse tracks driven with killer riff-blasting guitar, precision power drumming and lusty lead vocals. Those who witnessed their incendiary live show at Festers recently know what we're talking about... Portishead - Machine Gun 12" (Mercury) ................................................................... First single off Portishead's long awaited upcoming album "Third" - and it's an absolute shocker. The track is built from heavy stabs and a compressed, distorted drum machine - and very little else. Oh, there's Beth Gibbon's ghostly vocal presence (sounding at her absolute best) - and then a completely sick percussive breakdown complete with flanged-out sequences and a shocking John Carpenter-esque section that accompanies the track to its end. This really is unbelievably good. Laser etching on the b-side. Prayer Breakfast - Small American LP (self) ................................................................... In the tradition of Audioslave and Velvet Revolver, this Bloomington supergroup will blow minds AND ears. Featuring current and/or former members of: Applebones, Arrah and The Ferns, Bronze Float, Days of Dynamo, The Dinosaurs, Everybody, Everything, Now!, Half-handed Cloud, husband&wife, Last Hope, Mt. Gigantic, Rapider Than Horsepower, Rep Seki, Rodeo Ruby Love, This Story, Vollmar, and Whoa Bro Awesome. Curiosity piqued? The Replacements - [CD reissues] (Rhino) ................................................................... Rhino's upgrade of the seminal band's pre-Sire, Twin/Tone-era catalog includes deluxe editions of the EP Stink and the albums Hootenanny, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash and Let It Be. Includes tons of bonus tracks, many of which you've never heard. Awesome! Sly & the Family Stone - LP Reissues (Sundazed) ................................................................... Sly & the Family Stone was exactly the band America was supposed to have by the end of the 60s! This multi-cultural juggernaut, black & white, men & women, gathered up elements of the best music its native land had to offer - Soul, Rock, Funk and Jazz - and created something-freaking-else! Over his first 6 LPs, Sly Stone - a maverick studio genius who heard things nobody else did - turned the worlds of R&B, Funk, Soul and Psychedelia completely upside-down with his breathtakingly innovative band, whose lyrics, deftly laced with political and social commentary, were woven through groovy rhythms and melodies so infectious, it made standing still impossible. Each Sundazed title is sourced from the incredible, original Epic Records analog stereo masters. Sonic Youth - J'Accuse Ted Hughes SYR7 (SYR) ................................................................... The 7th installment of Sonic Youth's series of experimental + sometimes instrumental releases in a vinyl-only edition self-released on the band's own SYR label. J'accuse Ted Hughes is a previously unreleased 22 minute drone-piece recorded by at the All Tomorrows Parties Festival in the UK in 2001. Agnes B Musique' is a soundtrack-style piece recorded at the band's own studio in 2001 for a never-to-be realized collaboration with French clothing designer Agnes B. J Spaceman & Sun City Girls - Mister Lonely OST (Drag City) ................................................................... Soundtrack to the film Mr. Lonely (Harmony Korine) featuring music composed by Jason Pierce of Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 fame. The soundtrack also feature performances by the Sun City Girls. The film tells the tale of a young drifter who gets his kicks impersonating Michael Jackson. This ersatz King of Pop stumbles into a community of like-minded mimics-- everyone from Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple, Madonna, and the Three Stooges to Abe Lincoln, the Pope, and the Queen of England. Thomas Function - Celebration (Alive) ................................................................... Thomas Function love punk rock, but they love country, blues, new wave, garage rock, and the shit happening up the street, too. It comes out sounding like a bunch of earnest, severe songs from the foothills of Huntsville, Alabama, full of anger, clarity, and bourbon. Is America on the brink of a new rock 'n' roll renaissance? We sure hope so. Pick up the 7" too. Tiedye - Nothing Else Matters (Metallica) 12" (Italians Do It Better) ................................................................... Metallo? Itallica? Metalitalicalo? Whatever you wanna call it, Sweden's Tiedye are killing it with the cosmic instrumental of one of the Black Album's most beloved tracks. When played by this band, Lars' drums turn into smooth, slow disco pattering and Hetfield's guitar is downright smooth jazzy - definitely some deep Balearic grooving going on here. This is a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies with an etched B-side, get 'em before the lawyers catch a sniff. Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... Tokyo Police Club’s 2006 EP, A Lesson in Crime, earned them copious blog love and frequent comparisons to the Strokes, but Elephant Shell makes clear that the band’s ambitions are as much literary as musical. The music is lean, clean and spacious: expertly constructed post-punk miniatures full of ringing guitar and keyboard counterpoint, melodic bass work, and drumming that tilts rock songs gently toward the dance floor.
