Summer hath begun to sink into our bones. Feels good. The streets have calmed from the mass exodus of students. And while we do love their buying power, it sure does feel nice to have a little extra elbow room. If you aren't too busy working on your tan or planting your garden or roadtrippin', stop in and say "hey" while checking out these new goodies for thine ear-holes: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 5/13/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) The Black Angels - Directions to See a Ghost (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... The second full-length album from Austin's darkest droners. With tidal rhythms and rasping epics, it is a driving, psychedelic masterpiece that churns through the album's 72 minutes and 11 tracks. Check it out in the listening station. Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs (Atlantic) ................................................................... After relentless touring, performances on Saturday Night Live, and appearing on the cover of Spin and Paste Magazines, Death Cab for Cutie brings us Narrow Stairs. Following up their DVD collection, Directions and their platinum selling album, Plans, was no easy task but Narrow Stairs has already been praised by MTV as the band's most daring and adventurous effort to date. Dillard & Clark - The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark [reissue] (Water) ................................................................... Their 1968 debut, originally released on A&M, from one of the first and finest LA country-rock outfits. Comprised of Gene Clark, hot on the heels of his departure from the Byrds and his debut solo release (with the Gosdin Bros.), and Doug Dillard, the virtuosic banjoist/guitarist of the Dillards. Gene Clark is perhaps the most underrated songwriter of the 60s and this could very well be his finest post-Byrds moment. Featuring help from fellow Byrd Chris Hillman, future Burrito Brother 'Sneaky' Pete Kleinow, and future Burrito/Eagle Bernie Leadon, this is an absolutely essential piece of LA country-rock history. Dosh - Wolves and Wishes (Anticon) ................................................................... Martin Dosh's 4th album arrives after its architect spent nearly a year on the road touring solo and as a member of Andrew Bird's band. If 2006's The Lost Take reimagined the drums, Rhodes and everything-but-the-kitchen-sink virtuoso as a full band, his latest restocks the lineup with a fresh cast of collaborators, then stretches out as Dosh masterminds the material with all the explorative wonderment of a debut ablum. Never has our man sounded so free and not a single drum machine in the mix. Ecstatic Sunshine - Way (Cardboard) ................................................................... While some might remember ES as a delicate, guitar-leaning project based in unconventional melody, the outfit, now numbering three members and only one on guitar, have moved towards a loop-heavy wall of noise that, while still maintaining Matt Papich's bright, tumbling guitar melodies, seems to have become a band more concerned with textures and intensity. Firewater - The Golden Hour (Bloodshot) ................................................................... Comes close to being essential listening. In which a Nick Cave/Tom Waits acolyte travels to Pakistan, hangs out with the locals, and makes Sufi cabaret punk rock music. A superb, disturbing slab of desperation and creativity. - Paste Magazine Gregor Samsa - Rest (Kora) ................................................................... In their 3rd full-length album, Gregor Samsa takes a new approach to composition, both in process & instrumentation. In Rest, GS expand on their affinity for minimal, classical instrumentation mixed with mangled & manipulated sound through integration of new instruments such as the celesta, clarinet, classical voice & vibraphone. Along with these sounds, guitar has been almost entirely replaced by piano, whose parts were recorded on a piano once owned by Philip Glass. These pieces demonstrate a shift in focus to harmony, restraint & the use of muted tones, while less interest is taken in the large dynamic shifts that once carried the weight of many of their compositions. Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra - Miles of Styles (Ubiquity) ................................................................... The 7th in the Ping Pong Orchestra album series sees multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee go global. This is the soundtrack to places Lee has been and would like to visit, and was made using instruments he picked up along the way. Inspired by the multi-cultural mix of people in his hometown of London, the awe-inspiring metropolis that is NYC, and by the mysterious uber-stylish vibe of Tokyo. Not to mention Jamaica, Finland, Greece, China, France, and beyond. RIYL: Clutchy Hopkins, Library Records, Putomayo, and Six Degrees compilations. Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos - Brand New Key 7" (Epic) ................................................................... Super cheap 7 inch single from the forthcoming album "Animal". A-side is a cover of the classic bubblegum track "Brand New Key" by Melanie. B-side is Jesus Christ Blues. Get it quick before they're gone. Old 97s - Blame it on Gravity (New West) ................................................................... Blame it on Gravity finds the band turning up the amps and returning to the satisfying crunch of its early records. There are triumphant windmilling riffs, squalls of feedback, and upward spirals of guitar noise - and that's just in the first song. This time, the band decided to make the record in Dallas, where the band started 15 years ago. Blame It on Gravity came together during a 3-month recording session that doubled as a homecoming. Produced by Salim Nourallah, the album superbly combines the various elements of rock, punk, classic country and pop displayed on previous releases. STAFF PICKS! These are all available at Landlocked right now! Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55 (Vice, 2007) ................................................................... Charlotte is the daughter of the legendary French pop maestro Serge Gainsbourg and his association with Jane Birkin. You might also recognize Charlotte from her role in the heartwarming indie film The Science of Sleep. If this isn't yet all-star enough for you, the music is performed by French electronic duo Air, lyrics are written by Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy) and the whole thing is produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead) - yowza! All of this actually adds up to a wonderful listen. A lush, intimate album that fans of any of the aforementioned artists should enjoy. And it is significantly less creepy than Lemon Incest, her duet with Serge in her pre-teen days. - Heath Sparks, S/T (Bearsville 1971, reissue 2006) ................................................................... It's hard to imagine the shock of hearing the first Sparks LP upon its release in 1971. The bros. Mael, who are at the heart of Sparks to this day, had sopped up all sorts of pop music weirdness growing up on the LA scene, from bubblegum to the girl groups to rockabilly, and Sparks contains elements of all those. But, still, nothing at the time really sounded like this; vocalist Russell Mael's warbling falsetto hovers gently over layers of keyboards and a psuedo-glam rock strut, with just the slightest knowing, ironic wink, just enough to let you know that they know how campy it all is, but not enough for it to come off like a total joke. Keep in mind Roxy Music & Queen had not released anything yet, two bands somewhat similar in style if not exactly in sound. Bowie is a clear influence, but this ain't exactly glam either. I imagine this is what 10cc would have sounded like had they hooked up with Kim Fowley. - Jason Traffic - Heaven is In Your Mind (United Artists, 1968; Island, 2000) ................................................................... One of the all-time underrated UK psych albums, Traffic's '67 UK debut 'Mr. Fantasy' reconfigured for US release. Like other masterpieces of its time (ie. Sgt. Pepper's, Piper, 5000 Spirits, Are You Experienced?, etc.) this album has the same ability to transcend time and space, instantly connecting you with the vibes of the times. Very British in the best psych-pop way, you won't find the (also good) rootsy folk elements of later Traffic in these grooves. Instead, we are blessed with sitar-drenched pop numbers, heavy acid-rock and Small Faces-esque bounce. In fact, Steve Winwood's vocals almost rival those of Small Face Steve Marriott throughout, charged full of soul, intensity and purpose. Production from Jimmy Miller (Rolling Stones, Blind Faith) is stellar, full of huge drums, real tape-phasing and some strange, unclassifiable sounds. One of the classiest, most genuine psych albums of the era, any 60's rock fan should have this one in their collection. - Cyrus ------------------------------------------------------------------ Upcoming Bloomington shows that Landlocked Music is excited about: 5/13 - Rev Horton Heat / Nashville Pussy @ Bluebird 5/16 - Yea Big + Kid Static @ Bears 5/18 - Dickey Betts @ Bluebird 5/19 - Joe Lally @ Art Hospital 5/28 - Castanets Film @ Cinemat 6/4 - Times New Viking / Singer @ Waldron 6/5 - The Unseen @ Rhino's 6/7 - Cryptacize @ Art Hospital 6/18 - United Bible Studies / Sharron Kraus / Ignatz @ Bears 6/20 - MV+EE @ Bears 8/12 - Bon Iver @ Waldron 8/17 - Oneida @ Bluebird We have tickets and further information for many of these wonderful performances.
