Wow what a week - we two honchos were in Seattle and Portland meeting with owners of many other great stores from across the US and we are newly invigorated with ideas and inspiration. Not to mention all the great shows and wonderful regional hospitality. Look for more information and music in the near future, but we can't quite let all of the rabbit out of the hat yet - just the ears. How mysterious? Check out this awesome week of new music in the meantime, a perfect distraction while we finalise our masterplan: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 5/20/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Bonnie Prince Billy - Lie Down in the Light CD/LP (Drag City) ................................................................... Bright with guitars and harmonies, Lie Down in the Light is a fresh new album from Will Oldham. His vocals are at their most expressive, a judiciously dynamic and tuneful performance. Behind and all around is a subtle backdrop of percussive slaps and shakes, touches of keys and steel, loving harmony-vocal arrangements and other sweet surprises that will send fans back to their auto-erotic dungeons, fresh toys in hand. Castanets - Tendrils DVD (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... This video document serves as a snapshot of a particular moment in time surrounding Castanets. It is a meditative reflection on the mesmerizing motion of water, the beauty of natural light, and the spontaneity of friends. Responding to the thickness of the songs on "In The Vines", here the songs are stripped bare and presented by new voices that further reveal the lyrical beauty of Raposa's songwriting. It is equal parts home movie and audio-visual collage. Collections of Colonies of Bees - Six Guitars LP (Table of the Elements) Ateleia & Benjamin Curtis - Baghdad Batterie LP (Table of the Elements) ................................................................... TotE continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the second installment in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It's a 12xLP romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music's most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore, and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley among others. The packaging of these vinyl-only releases is similarly spectacular. It's a one-sided, 12-inch LP, pressed on clear vinyl; the reverse is laser etched with an illustration by acclaimed UK artist Savage Pencil, whose credits include album art for The Fall, Big Black, Sonic Youth and John Wilkes Booze! Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia (Roadrunner) ................................................................... The band toured the world for almost two straight years in support of the hit song "Yes, Virginia" and in 2008 the Dresden Dolls felt it was the time to release to their devoted fan base the remainder of songs from that era, while adding some new songs they were passionate about. The Explorers Club - Freedom Wind CD/LP (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... The Beach Boys are the obvious touchstone, but dig a bit deeper and you'll hear flourishes of Paul McCartney, The Byrds, Emitt Rhodes, ELO, and doo-wop. Embracing a pop blueprint from a time when great songs were played on the radio and everybody loved them all. They're doing for summer beach song what Amy Winehouse has done for R&B or Sharon Jones for funk and soul; what Antibalas have done for Afro-beat. They're reclaiming the classics as their own, injecting them with life, and making music that transcends any era. Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop and Roll (Jingle Town) ................................................................... Imagine a big-time punk-pop trio from the Oakland area deciding, for fun, to record a cool song that reminded them of 60s garage rock - adventurous, reckless, and edgy but with a "doo-doo-doo" party sound. Imagine the lovechild of an unholy marriage between The Stooges and Tommy James And The Shondells. That band is Green Day and this sounds nothing like them. French Kicks - Swimming (Vagrant) ................................................................... They were never as trendy as the Strokes or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but NYC's French Kicks were a mainstay of the Big Apple rock renaissance. One listen to their sharp, hip mod-pop is proof that the boys did just fine for themselves. Half-handed Cloud / Ariel Pink - Unusual Animals Vol.3 7" (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... This is the 3rd in a series of vinyl-only releases. The series pairs Asthmatic Kitty roster artists with friends and sometimes-unlikely bedfellows. Each includes a beautiful rendering of one of Mother Nature's stranger inhabitants by illustrator Jared Chapman. Full of spirited humor, Half-handed Cloud dissolves any obstacles standing in the way of his innocent bulldozing, jam-packing a 60s sensibility, the touch of a lullaby, and murmurs of divine redemption into micro-narrative and Casio sound effects. Ariel Pink's excess of ideas, alongside his determination to make music from a trance-like state of privacy, places him among characters like R Stevie Moore, Daniel Johnston, or a young Kate Bush. Indian Jewelry - Free Gold! (We Are Free) ................................................................... Their first full-length in almost two years is their most scathing. Dirty hooks, shape shifting grooves, and a lot of attitude. Look for them on tour this spring and summer. Their previous show at Landlocked was epic and third-eye opening - this is much the same, a slow burn down an acid highway. Islands - Arm's Way (Anti) ................................................................... Montreal's Islands flower from the same scene that gave us Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Arm's Way finds them in command of a palette of classic pop colorings, from the 70s rock heroics to slinky cinematic pop. While their previous album earned the band rave reviews and a fanatical audience, that record can now be seen as a warm-up for the sweeping confidence and symphonic scope of Arm’s Way. Jeremy Jay - A Place Where We Could Go CD/LP (K) ................................................................... He's tall, blond and handsome and wants a cat for his apartment. He writes and plays piano and guitar. Jeremy's writing is influenced by dreams and the more fantastic surrealist sensibility linked with the French New Wave. There's also a strong 50s rock sensibility happening and 60s era Yea-Yea Francois Hardy. Like Buddy Holly, Peter Pan and the John Hughes movies rolled into one. Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head (Atco) ................................................................... Scarlett’s debut album features her distinctive vocal interpretations of 10 songs by Tom Waits. It also introduces one original track which she co-wrote with David Sitek (TV on the Radio), who produced the album and lent his instrumental skills throughout. David Bowie adds backing vocals on 2 tracks, and the album also features the talents of Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and multi-instrumentalist Sean Antanaitis from Celebration, among others. Mates of State - Re-Arrange Us (Barsuk) ................................................................... On this release, the duo move beyond their trademark wall of sound with additional instrumentation, including lush strings, guitar, and horns to back up their already honed melodic songwriting. The National - A Skin, A Night DVD + Virginia CD-EP (Beggars) ................................................................... This is a documentary about The National by French filmmaker Vincent Moon, who followed the group during the creation of their acclaimed 2007 release, "Boxer." It's an insightful and beautiful glimpse into the band's creative process. The DVD is packaged with a separate disc, "The Virginia EP", which contains 12 tracks of demos, a cover, live versions, a radio session, and b-sides. Jay Reatard - Painted Shut b/w An Ugly Death 7" (Matador) ................................................................... The second in Matador's Jay Reatard 7" series. Another limited print run this time on red vinyl. Artwork by Mike Sniper. Windsor for the Derby - How We Lost CD/LP (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Their 7th album resonates in a personal way with the band. These songs are reflections on the records that WFTD consistently re-visit: Swell Maps, Section 25, Psychic TV, and much of the Factory Records catalog. It's about the band and how they've changed over the years; the things they hold on to and what's been left behind.
