Its the time of the season for loving. Loving Bloomington, loving eachother, loving music. How do we do it - that there are good tunes to be had, week after week, from now until infinity? Ancient Landlocked Secret. Hope your extended holiday weekend was exquisite - here is what we've got for ya: NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 5/27/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Ellen Allien - Sool (Bpitch Control) ................................................................... Sool is the 4th release by the inimitable queen. Welcome once again to the her world: this one is subtle, mysterious, and minimal. Created in the deepest and darkest of Berlin's winters, Sool is intended to be a valve, a loophole, a respite from the crazy summers into the introspection and hibernation of winter. The sounds of everyday life and snatches of whispers reveal themselves with field-recorded closeness, the beats are as soft and as near as a heartbeat, ambient synth sounds are as long and spacious as an arm stretching across a couch, and everything is arranged in exactly the right place. The Coke Dares - Feelin' Up (Essay) ................................................................... After three years of tweaking, mastering, remastering, deleting accidentally, undeleting, doing, redoing, undoing, and then doing it all again, The Coke Dares have officially decided to release their "new" record. Feelin' Up is 33 tracks in less than 30 minutes. Feelin' Up was recorded live, no mixing, to analog tape at Russian Recording by Corndog Brodavsky. On one of the songs Beach Dog sounds like he has just eaten a bunch of razor blades. On another, Pervert drums and sings at the same time. Skye Miles, on bass, keeps it tight by wearing sunglasses, virtually, for the entire length (pronounced "lenth") of the record. It must be heard to be believed. Health - Health//Disco (Lovepump United) ................................................................... The band's debut album and relentless touring with the likes of Crystal Castles and White Williams has cemented their status as one of the most exciting bands in independent music. In addition to evoking grand hyperboles from every blog under the sun, their album inspired several other musicians to match the band's creativity. They reimagined, recut, and remixed, and the result is this. Hercules & Love Affair - Blind [12" single] (DFA) ................................................................... First single from the Brooklyn-based duo's debut featuring guest vocals from Antony Hegarty (Antony & The Johnsons). 'Blind' is the kind of propulsive Disco number that sends hearts leaping and feet dancing in an instantaneous marriage of body and soul. Hercules & Love Affair is 2008's most exciting dance floor concoction, an arthouse vision of pure Pop by way of futuristic Electronica and classic Dance music, where beautiful, bruising harmonies and tensile rhythms collide in resurgent soundscapes and emotive disco workouts. James Pants - Welcome (Stones Throw) ................................................................... Mr. Pants is a purveyor par excellence of that unmistakable "fresh beat": 80's Soul, Electro Boogie, Early Rap, New Wave, & Post-Punk Disco, all of which can be found on Welcome where James plays drums, keys, guitar and sings. Mason Jennings - In The Ever (Brushfire) ................................................................... Mason is one of the best-kept secrets in pop music. He was hand-picked to perform two Dylan songs in Todd Haynes' acclaimed I'm Not There, both on the soundtrack album, and lip-synched by Christian Bale in the movie. For this album Jennings retreated to a studio in the woods, where he set himself up with a laptop and two microphones. In The Ever continues Jennings' spiritual journey, informed by his love of influences like Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash's American Recordings and Led Zeppelin. Mudhoney - The Lucky Ones (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Worldwide lovers of the finer things are rejoicing at the news that Mudhoney is back in action with the band's 8th album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking. Deliberately and aggressively raw, the album was intentionally written "from the rhythm up" instead of from the riff and the lyrics down. The effect is to thrust out the bottom-end rumble of drummer Dan Peters and bassist Guy Maddison, and to bring about a cohesive whole not entirely ruled by the almighty riff - although you certainly don't have to look hard to find 'em. (And check out the deluxe reissue of Superfuzz Bigmuff in the reissue zone.) Phantom Cruisers - Mean Lookin' (self) ................................................................... Bloomington's Phantom Cruisers set fire to the Midwest with a high-test hopped-up rockabilly sound that you want to get up and go. Since 2003, they have used their roots in punk rock to generate frenetic rhythms, but use their love of country and rock & roll to keep it in control for a polished and exciting sound. Front-man Eddy Price keeps it smooth with a fiery edge. Bob Dude bangs it out in a flurry of controlled chaos. DF Briles uses a guitar to say all the things he can't say in real life. Dave Herr slaps those strings like they owe him money. These 4 boys are the pride of Southern Indiana. Spiritualized - Songs in A&E (Spaceman) ................................................................... Much anticipated sixth album, more than two years in the making. This eighteen-track opus was inspired in part by Jason Spaceman's serious bout with pneumonia. Deluxe edition and double-vinyl available next month. Vetiver - A Thing Of The Past (Gnomonsong) ................................................................... A collection of covers originally recorded by some of Vetiver leader Andy Cabic's favorite artists. Most date from the late 60s/early 70s, from the likes of Loudon Wainwright, Townes Van Zandt, Ronnie Lane and Hawkwind. Guests include Michael Hurley and Vashti Bunyan. CD now, vinyl due June 10. Walter Meego - Voyager (Almost Gold) ................................................................... Walter Meego is not a dude, but a duo. Justin and Colin, the heart and soul of Walter Meego, are two rare suburban white boys who intuitively understand the subliminal power of synthy, salacious bass. Effervescent pop is Walter Meego's specialty, and it flies out of speakers like a Pegasus riding a cheetah. VA - Soul Messages From Dimona (Numero Group) ................................................................... Following a path blazed in Belize and the Bahamas, Numero Group finds yet another stop on the soul diaspora tour: Dimona, Israel. Between 1975-81, a group of American ex-pats took their native sounds of Detroit and Chicago and intermingled them with the messages of the Black Hebrew culture. The results are a heavenly mix of spiritual soul and jazz with an undercurrent of gospel psychedelia. Featuring the Soul Messengers, the Spirit Of Israel, Sons Of The Kingdom, and the Tonistics, Soul Messages From Dimona is the only living document of a thriving community at both the center and fringe of the world. Deluxe CD and 2LP set comes stuffed with rare photographs, sleeves, and expansive liner notes about the African Hebrew Israelites journey from the sounds of slavery to the intonations of liberty.
