Remember a couple weeks ago when we spoke of having surprises for you - and then last week how I didn't deliver but none of you called us on it either? Well, here is one for ya: a brand spanking new website, forever still located at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ - its a marked improvement, but still a work in progress, also. So please be kind... Oh, we are super excited to see Times New Viking and Singer at the Waldron Arts Center on Wednesday night. Buy your ticket today at Landlocked and save $2 at the door! More info here: http://www.spiritof68promotions.com/ Now some new stuffs... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/3/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) The Accidental - There Were Wolves (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Take the man behind The Memory Band and Trunk Records (Stephen Cracknell), the twisted songwriter from Tunng (Sam Genders), one half of Fence Collective duo The Bicycle Thieves (Hannah Caughlin) and singer-songwriter Liam Bailey. Put them in front of a PC and add occasional input from guests including harpist Serafina Steer and Rob, Jenny & Nancy from the Memory Band. The outcome is new collective The Accidental and their beguiling debut album There Were Wolves. The Byrds - Live At Royal Albert Hall 1971 (Sundazed) ................................................................... Rescued from a tape that had sat forgotten in McGuinn's climatized garage for decades, this stellar 1971 set, featuring live versions of the current band's studio faves as well as adventurous reworkings of Byrds classics might be the most accurate and stirring live performance yet of the legendary LA combo. By 1971, the guitar interplay of McGuinn and White had become a jaw-dropping highlight of their live performances, as had their stripped-down, acoustic mini-set and peerless 4-part vocal harmonies. The Cool Kids - The Bake Sale (Chocolate Industries) ................................................................... The Cool Kids are a hip hop duo from Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan. The duo consists of Antoine "Mikey Rocks" Reed and Evan "Chuck Inglish" Ingersoll. Highly hyped and rightly so. They're already opened for M.I.A. and collaborated with Lil Wayne. RIYL Spank Rock, Lady Sov, Diplo. The Cure - The Only One b/w NY Trip CD-single (Geffen) ................................................................... The Cure, one of the most revered British bands of the past quarter-century, have unveiled their plans to release four singles leading up to the release of their thirteenth studio album, which will be out on September 13, 2008. Fleet Foxes - s/t (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Seattle's Fleet Foxes traffic in baroque harmonic pop. They draw influences from the traditions of folk, pop, choral, gospel, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, film scores, and their NW peers. The subject matter ranges from the natural world and familial bonds to bygone loves and stone cold graves. Double-LP includes the Sun Giant EP and download card. Highly recommended! The Futureheads - This Is Not the World (Megaforce) ................................................................... The Futureheads are a 4-piece UK post-punk band. Their name comes from the title of the The Flaming Lips record Hit to Death in the Future Head. This album is an amalgamation of their 2 previous albums. The album was recorded over 3 weeks in Spain with legendary producer Youth (Primal Scream, The Verve) who clipped the Mackem lads' overflowing pot of songs into shape. Out of it came 12 short, sharp, shocks of pure Futurehead joy, not dismissing the killer hooks and choruses that adorn each and every one. Grails - Take Refuge In Clean Living (Important) ................................................................... Sounding like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Bladerunner, Take Refuge In Clean Living is both lysergic and earthy yet moves from blissful Eno-inspired ambience, to epic Morricone rock hymns, to an unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener back to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music. Harvey Milk - Life... the Best Game in Town (Hydra Head) ................................................................... Cult favorite Harvey Milk was responsible for some of the slowest, heaviest, and most uncompromising rock music created in the latter half of the 90s. Spearheaded by the alternately burly and angelic vocal stylings of Milk mastermind Creston Spiers, "Life" is both tumultuous and grueling, resonating with the glorious slow-motion radiance of Total Dirge Power. They've since been joined by Thrones legend Joe Preston. Jaguar Love - s/t EP (Matador) ................................................................... Consisting of Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato — both formerly of the Blood Brothers — and J Clark (formerly the guitar wiz in the recently split Pretty Girls Make Graves), Jaguar Love bear some stylistic similarities to the trio's old outfits but based on early live evidence, something totally new & ferocious is in the works. Votolato's crazed Japanese electric 12-string guitar parts remain as complex and Beefheart-esque as ever, but Whitney has turned his scream to a Bolan-esque glam. Result: pop music. Ladytron - Velocifero (Nettwerk) ................................................................... Velocifero fully transcends the confines of electro-pop with a fresh wave of distorted soul. Mira and Helen - whose disparate vocal styles already provide considerable depth - have evolved both as musicians and songwriters. While, rhythmically, there are moments reminiscent of their old favorites Os Mutantes and the Birthday Party, Velocifero cycles through a wide swath of emotion. Produced by Ladytron with assistance from Vicarious Bliss (Ed Banger Records) and Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails). Low - You May Need a Murderer DVD (In the Fishtank) ................................................................... In almost fifteen years, Low became an institution on the indie and alternative scenes. Famous for their quiet, beautiful slow songs, and fascinating harmonies, as well as their religious background (core members Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker are Mormons). For this documentary, a film crew followed Alan and Mimi on tour, at home in Duluth, MN, in their church community, and as parents. It's more than an on-the-road or behind-the-scenes video. It shows Sparhawk as the ambivalent main character in an intriguing movie about religion, violence, conscience, and madness. It can also be seen as a touching love story. The M's - Real Close Ones (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... The third release from this Chicago band is a gorgeous testament to life; born from the group's passage through the world as musicians, men, fathers, husbands, and sons. "Melodies twist and turn, strings phase in and out, bells chime. All this ambition coagulates into an irresistible, tumbling, tune-filled whole" - Mojo Aimee Mann - @#%&! Smilers (Superego) ................................................................... A return to form after the artistic detours of 2005's concept album The Forgotten Arm and 2006's Christmas CD. Featuring 13 new original songs. The songs range from the stripped-down-to-basics of "Columbus Avenue," to the almost Cars-esque synth-pop of "Freeway," alongside the classic Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell-era "Phoenix," and the hushed creepiness of "Little Tornado." The final song "Ballantines" is a duet with Sean Hayes complete with barroom piano and trombone section. All songs were penned by Mann with the exception of "True Believer" which was co-written with fellow singer-songwriter Grant Lee Phillips. The Mother Truckers - Let's All Go to Bed (Funzalo) ................................................................... No not the local DJs- but rather Austin TX's perfect blend of rock 'n' roll, soul, and honky-tonk, with a little pinch of sugar thrown in. Their mix of hard-hitting electric guitars, soaring vocals, and irreverent lyrics is even more volatile on this release. They mix up country, blues, and rock, then add their own unique twist with their creative songwriting and high-energy live performances. Now they've created an album that captures that energy while also embracing their studio skills. My Morning Jacket - LP reissues (Darla) ................................................................... A special treat since the LP version of the new MMJ album has been pushed back a few weeks... Their fabulous debut album and beloved second record. Double vinyl re-press limited to 1000 copies. Colored vinyl in gorgeous gatefold sleeves with matte finish. Tennessee Fire has green and blue vinyl. At Dawn has red and gold. Opeth - Watershed (Roadrunner) ................................................................... New album from the forward-thinking Swedish titans, who seemlessly and fluidly combine Metal, Classic Rock, Prog, Folk and Free Form Jazz. With this, their 9th effort, Opeth continue to shake things up, turn the corner and push the limits of their sound. And the results are breathtaking. Ultimately, Watershed sounds at once completely like and absolutely nothing like previous Opeth records. Watershed takes all that is Opeth, and goes where Opeth have never gone before. Shearwater - Rook (Matador) ................................................................... Austin's Shearwater return with the follow-up to "Palo Santo". "Rook" meditates on man's intersection with the natural world; the world after human beings are gone. A dark fairy tale encased in a cycle of songs. Jonathan Meiburg's bold, soaring voice still anchors the songs, which broaden his pastoral prog-folk chaotic celestial mindfuckery into new realms. Beyond the continuing touchstones of late Talk Talk, Nico, and John Cale, there are now allusions to Van Morrison and hints of Joni Mitchell. All set in a newly lush sonic gorgeousness of harp, strings, and woodwinds atop the magnificent rhythm section. LP version contains bonus track not on the CD. Subtle - Exiting Arm (Lex) ................................................................... From Oakland comes the underground Hip Hop of Subtle. The final part of a trilogy that started out with A New White (2004), continued with For Hero : For Fool (2006) and has been surrounded by Wishingbone and Yell&Ice. Dose One has been breaking down the 2-Deez, creating a multi-layered website dedicated to the world and words behind Exiting Arm. You must check this out. Thank You - Terrible Two (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Thank You is an athletic rhythm/action unit, made up of Jeffrey McGrath, Michael Bouyoucas, and Elke Wardlaw. The band has been building up a reputation via their live show, which has left audience members joyful, overwhelmed, and ready to spread the word. A seeming telepathy occurs onstage. The band enters into musical dervishes, a union, a breathless chaos that results in one hell of a Saturday night and what seems like a musical fight. The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing (Columbia) ................................................................... Debut album from The Ting Tings. Making great British pop music - their way - is what they're about. We Started Nothing is an album brimming with intuitive pop noise. It's pure garage-pop and once heard will in-bed itself into your subconscious for many days, weeks, months to come. Snappy choruses trade off against angular guitar work, whip smart drumming and a succession of loops that they create live with the use of delay pedals. The Virgins - s/t (Atlantic) ................................................................... Self-titled debut from New York City band The Virgins is a 10 track serving of party tunes written about the New York City life and everything in between. They have toured with Tokyo Police Club, Mark Ronson and Ra Ra Riot and are on the Nylon Tour with Be Your Own Pet and She Wants Revenge right now. Weezer - s/t (The Red Album) (Interscope) ................................................................... Weezer, one of the biggest and most influential bands of the last decade will, for the third time in its 6-album history, release a self-titled album already being referred to by people as The Red Album. Comprised of sessions produced by Rick Rubin, Jacknife Lee and the band itself, the album is adventurous and undeniably Weezer. All four members taking turns singing lead. Includes bonus red vinyl 7" sporting a cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" VA - Disco Italia: Essential Italo Disco Classics 1977-85 (Strut) ................................................................... Disco Italia brings together original classics and rarities by some of the genre's leading producers, from Claudio Simonetti and Giancarlo Meo (aka Kasso and Easy Going) to Peter Micioni and Balearic favorite, Tullio De Piscopo. Many tracks appear on CD here for the first time and the album features several exclusive re-edits by compiler Stevie Kotey, member of DJ / producer team Chicken Lips and label boss of Bear Entertainment. Hurry! ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Dead C - Future Artists (Ba Da Bing, 2007) ................................................................... At this point, Dead C's status as neg-fi free rock elder statesmen is secure. Much like Sonic Youth, a band to which they're often compared, the only question remaining is, after 20 odd years of spewing murky sonic goop upon the earth, what next? The answer posed with this album seems to be, refinement through added digital chicanery. It's something I'm usually patently against, but in this specific case it adds some much needed variety to the brute buzz, scrape, and thud for which the kiwi trio are known. There's still the instantly identifiable hermetic, visonary NZ quality, and they're still noisy as hell in places (the acoustic track on this album is maybe the loudest), but there seems to be alot more going on underneath the thrum and howl. If SY approach experimental music from a rock perspective, Dead C approach rock music from an experimental perspective, making track #1 on this album, "The AMM of Punk Rock", a very apt description of themselves indeed. - Jason Gregor Samsa - Rest (Kora, 2008) ................................................................... Named after Kafka's famous man/roach, their sound isn't what one might expect from the name. On their previous releases, the band took cues from the dream pop aesthetic of the early 90s and caressed it through a modern classical and ambient lens, creating dynamic shifts of epic sound not unlike Mogwai or GYBE. On Rest, their third full length, the band embraces their slow-motion chamber sound with a more subtle approach. Guitar is nearly absent, replaced by piano. White space helps sculpt the notes out of the page as prominently as the notes themselves. Deep reverb, vibrato and echo still spin around, creating a warm glow of an album that is as haunting and beautiful as Sigur Ros at the height of their powers, but with guy/gal vocals you can fully absorb and break your heart to. Expertly recorded, hushed and emotional. A perfect rainy day record. - Heath VA - Tropicalia: Ou Panis et Circenses (Polygram, 1968: Lilith, 2008) ................................................................... The definitive statement of Brazil's fabled Tropicalia movement of the late 1960s, this is a collection of individual efforts as well as collaborations between the scene's major players. Rebelling against a repressive government and military dictatorship, these artists were greatly influenced and invigorated by the revolutionary freedom of expression captured in the psychedelic music pouring out of the US and UK, 'Sgt. Pepper's' being the most obvious touchstone. These new western sounds were melded together with the traditional samba and bossa nova musics more common in Brazil, resulting in some utterly fresh and amazingly music. All the major players are here, including Caetano Veloso, Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa. Really beautiful stuff, gorgeous melodies and infectious rhythms meld perfectly with wildly experimental studio effects and tape manipulation. The essential soundtrack to summer. - Cyrus ------------------------------------------------------------------ Upcoming Bloomington shows that Landlocked Music is excited about: 6/4 - Times New Viking / Singer @ Waldron 6/5 - The Unseen @ Rhinos 6/7 - Cryptacize @ Art Hospital 6/11 - Oxford Collapse @ Bears 6/18 - United Bible Studies / Sharron Kraus / Ignatz @ Bears 6/20 - MV+EE @ Bears 6/21 - Scout Niblett @ Waldron 6/28 - The Wailers @ Bluebird 6/28 - Static Thought @ Rhinos 7/18 - Time Again @ Rhinos 7/25, 26, 27 - Forecastle Festival - Louisville (Method Man, Dr Dog, Tortoise, Z-Trip, Film School, Extra Golden, Catfish Haven, + MUCH MORE) 8/12 - Bon Iver @ Waldron 8/15 - Junior Brown @ Bluebird 8/17 - Oneida @ Bluebird We have tickets and additional information for many of these wonderful performances.
