Do you own your sexy lemon colored Landlocked Music t-shirt yet? I bet you don't - cuz you sure weren't sporting it at the beach, on the boat, at the park, or anywhere else this past weekend. For shame! Right your wrong today. And while you're at it, why not feast upon this cornucopia of new musics? Bon appetit! NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/17/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Adem - Takes (Domino) ................................................................... Adem's two critically acclaimed albums, the growing influence of his original band, Fridge, and curating the "Homefires" festival has made him the toast of the new folk scene in the UK and the US. This album of covers features material from the cream of independent and avant instrumental artists of the recent past: Bedhead, PJ Harvey, Lisa Germano, Pinback, dEUS, Aphex Twin, Yo La Tengo, Smashing Pumpkins, Tortoise, Bjork, The Breeders, and Low. Eef Barzelay - Lose Big (429) ................................................................... Singer-songwriter Eef Barzelay, known as the creative force and frontman for the critically-acclaimed band Clem Snide, was once described as a cross between Hank Williams and Nick Drake. As Rolling Stone puts it, "Lyrically, he can be as cool as jazz, as earnest as folk, as sorrowful as country, as goofy as pop and as ironic as indie rock, sometimes all in one song." The multi-talented Barzelay has also enjoyed success as a film composer with his score for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival Award-winning film Rocket Science, which features the song I Love The Unknown which is included on Lose Big. Bowerbirds - Hymns for a Dark Horse (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... Band members currently reside on the outskirts of Raleigh, NC on a quiet plot of land. This organic, rural, simple way of life is reflected in their music, which is pure, spiritual, and perfectly unrefined. With each song, Bowerbirds remind us that we humans are part of something larger - something beautiful and sacred. "Hymns" was originally released in 2007 on Burly Time Records, and is now issued in an expanded form featuring two bonus tracks. Coldplay - Viva La Vida (Capitol) ................................................................... Viva La Vida is the Britpop act's fourth studio release. The album comprises 10 brand new tracks, recorded in London, Barcelona and New York with producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire). A slight departure from their pop by numbers formula, but not radical enough to alienate their audience. Very limited LP version also available. Endless Boogie - Focus Level (No Quarter) ................................................................... This NYC four-piece started out as an "old man hobby" and turned into the best psychedelic rock 'n' roll band in the city (maybe country, possibly world). Endless Boogie jam, then jam some more. They lock in grooves so tight there's no escape - like entering a black hole, that last second stretches out forever. The only thing keeping them from living up to their name is the physics of the compact disc. The perfect soundtrack to hot summer nights. Hanging out in the basement. Smoking figs in the yard. The Impossible Shapes - S/T (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Bloomington's own, The Impossible Shapes have been merrily music-making under the radar for a decade now. At the root, these four long-hairs are a pop band who've been strained through British folk as well as the whole post/beat/mystic literate gob. Also look for their Cassette Box Set Compendium, featuring six hour-long tapes of all the band's released material, and some unreleased tracks spanning 1998-2007. Now is the time to stock up on the back catalog, too. King Khan and the Shrines - The Supreme Genius of King Khan (Vice) ................................................................... Psychedelic soul, garage rock rave-ups, supremely smooth love songs; sixteen smash songs. The band has been spreading their love in Germany since 1999, releasing full-lengths, EPs, singles, and hard-to-find vinyl. Now Khan brings the greatest of his hits to Vice. Includes liner notes by Jared Swilley of The Black Lips. My Brightest Diamond - A Thousand Shark's Teeth (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... With this Brooklyn band's sophomore release, we're instantly reminded of Shara Worden's reputation as one of indie music's most vibrant, creative, and original voices. This record is charming, playful, daring, foreboding, graceful, eclectic, exciting, and visceral. The songs marry vast instrumentation - marimbas, harps, clarinets, French horns, rabid guitars, vibraphones, and more - to create an unequaled amalgamation of style and color. In a word, beautiful. She's come a long way since playing here at Landlocked! Nomo - Ghost Rock (Ubiquity) ................................................................... This record owes as much to Can, Eno, and MIA as it does to Fela Kuti, Francis Bebey, and Funkadelic. There's no loss of steam as this Michigan collective incorporates new influences. Nomo breaks through with a matured and developed sound that's fully their own. They've shared stages with Earth Wind And Fire, Konono No. 1, Sharon Jones, and Dan Deacon. They have blazede through Bloomington at least 3 times now and floored everyone each time. For people who like funky, jazzy afro-beat, the fringes of Lotus and far beyond... Notwist - The Devil, You + Me (Domino) ................................................................... The Notwist make music that's at once impossibly personal and hugely inviting. This release is their most important and moving to date, in the band's nearly 20 year career. Markus Acher's singular voice surrounds you with all the comfort of familiarity, the euphoria of re-acquaintance. It takes a while before the words and the scale of the musical language sink in. The deluxe limited edition is a hard-bound book with full color 24-page insert. Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual (We Are Free) ................................................................... Live, their music is total spastic bliss. A complete sugar high freak out. Smiles all around - like Christmas morning, riding roller coasters, triple dips. But it's not easy to emulate the spirit and energy of the Baltimore foursome's live show on CD. Yet the outcome of this, their second release, truly embodies the spirit of the band's live gigs. Complex yet pop, raw yet refined, heavy yet sweet, "Ice Cream Spiritual" needs to be blasted while standing. RIYL Deerhoof, Boredoms, Japanther. Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea (Drag City) ................................................................... The sixth album from Silver Jews and their first since Tanglewood Numbers from 2005. All a-sweat and working hard, rumbling with terror and humility like old Johnny Cash, leader David Berman is once again your tour guide into the void, pointing out spots where some dreams died and other candy-colored conceits were conceived. Dan Tyminski - Wheels (Rounder) ................................................................... Dan Tyminski's prominence has steadily grown through his role as vocalist and multi-instrumentalist in Alison Krauss and Union Station and through his enduring version of "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" on the hit soundtrack to the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Now with the release of Wheels, he delivers a superb project accentuated by the inimitable talent of his band along with special guests Vince Gill, Ron Block, and Cheryl and Sharon White. Combining a sophisticated, modern sound with Tyminski's hallmark, searing intensity, Wheels features a powerful set of songs dealing with conflict, transition, heartbreak, and the lessons of life - all delivered with timeless soul from one of the great voices of contemporary bluegrass. The War on Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Their songs recall the 80s guitar army of Sonic Youth with the captivating lyrics and vocal stylings of Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen. Walls of guitar - acoustic, electric, twelve string - douse each track of this debut, threatening to cast the band into space rock territory, but the melodies and immediately identifiable lyrics keep these songs grounded. It's one of those albums that each of us holds onto tightly. They get moved from apartment to apartment through the years; they're songs on the radio that follow us from town to town. They evoke waves of nostalgia and grow more poignant with each new bump along the road. Recommended. Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue [2CD/LP reissue] (Sony Legacy) ................................................................... Apart from the non-release of Smile, the biggest lament of hardcore Beach Boys fans is that most of the non-Brian Wilson solo albums are available on CD. But now, for fans of late drummer Dennis Wilson, there's reason to celebrate as his only-released solo album gets the reissue it deserves. Widely acknowledged as the finest Beach Boys solo effort, it's now presented with clarity, allowing the full sonic palette to be heard in its intended glory. Wilson's raspy vocal may have been past its prime, but it's still affecting and ably supported by the sumptuous production values he gave the album. This appeals to anyone with even a passing interest in The Beach Boys, as well as a delight for hardcore fans with its unreleased tracks. This is as essential a Beach Boys artifact as Pet Sounds or Sunflower/Surf's Up. Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer (Sub Pop) ................................................................... The legion of bearded, sweater-vested critics will want to file this album under 'Prog Rock' because it doesn't offer up sugary cast-offs for the short-attention-span set, but no one ever danced to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It might instead be this generation's Marquee Moon, or an indie rock Chinese Democracy released thirty years early and sixty million dollars under budget (and without cornrows, to boot). Better, though, to think of it as the sound of a band edging forward into a wispy darkness, one hand reaching out, the other firmly clutching the past. Wooden Shjips - Vol.1 CD (Holy Mountain) ................................................................... The Wooden Shjips earliest material was released on vinyl, pressed in small quantities that were either free or hard to come by and are now hopelessly out of print. Who are we to keep you away from the rush of "Shrinking Moon for You"? Vol. 1 collects all the tracks from the free 10-inch, the Dance, California 7-inch, and the SOL 7-inch. While some people love The Who for the stadium-rock power of their 70s output, I prefer the mod-pop melodicism and excitement of their 60s material, a side of the band which reached crystalline perfection here. A concept album of sorts, it is a love letter to the 'pirate' radio stations of the day, complete with commercials and jingles linking the tracks. Underneath the pop-art cover lays probably their strongest, catchiest and most consistent set of songs. Every song has an amazing, ear-catching melody and intriguing subject matter, ranging from Kinks-style social commentaries to introspective love songs, goofy stories and blissed-out psychedelic relevations. This is the album where Townshend found himself as a songwriter, going deeper than the angry young mod and exploring new musical territories which reappear on their next album, 'Tommy.' The CD includes tons of bonus tracks which are so good that you wonder why they weren't included in the first place. - Cyrus ------------------------------------------------------------------ Upcoming Bloomington shows that Landlocked Music is excited about: 6/18 - United Bible Studies / Sharron Kraus / Ignatz / Kohoutek / PoisonOak @ Bear's 6/20 - MV+EE / Elephant Micah / Resting Rooster @ Bear's 6/20 - Walking Ruins @ Festers 6/21 - Scout Niblett @ Waldron 6/26 - Flood Benefit w/ Racebannon, Good Luck, Gravitas, more @ Bluebird 6/27 - Eli "Paperboy" Reed and the True Loves @ Bear's 6/28 - The Wailers @ Bluebird 6/28 - Static Thought @ Rhino's 6/30 - Samantha Crain @ the Cinemat 7/2 - Faceless Werewolves @ Bear's 7/9 - The Cheat @ Bear's 7/10 - El Olio Wolof / Timbre @ the Cinemat 7/16 - Kentucky Nightmare @ Bear's 7/18 - Titus Andronicus @ Bear's 7/18 - Time Again @ Rhino's 7/25, 26, 27 - Forecastle Festival - Louisville (Method Man, Dr Dog, Tortoise, Z-Trip, Film School, Extra Golden, Catfish Haven, + MUCH MORE) 8/3 - Harry & the Potters @ Rhino's 8/12 - Bon Iver @ Waldron 8/15 - Junior Brown @ Bluebird 8/17 - Oneida @ Bluebird We have tickets and additional information for many of these wonderful performances.
