Welcome to Landlocked Music 2 : A New Age (but not the Yanni kind (unless of course you like Yanni (in which case please come special order it from us)))!!! Of course I am talking about our new store location at 202 N. Walnut Ave here in lovely downtown Bloomington aka Tree City USA. Tucked into the quaint black tile store front between el Norteno and Subway, nearby to the Bluebird, Plan 9 Video, Greeks Pizza, Tallent, Roots, Samira, Skinquake, Video Saloon - the list goes on and on - we are super excited to say the least. Stop by and see us soon! Our re-opening today isn't quite "grand", as we still hammer out some details and get fully functional (phone? who needs it!) but hey, we made it. Take a deep breath, hold our hand, close your eyes, and let's do this... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 7/8/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) The Baseball Project - Vol 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Rock n' roll vets Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, REM, Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Gutterball, Danny & Dusty, Miracle 3) have an unhealthy love for music undermined only by an even more unhealthy love of baseball. The compatriots blend these 2 passions with an album of buzzing guitars and baseball back stories. The heroes and villains of America's (in)famous pastime are explored with cutting wit and fanboy detail in songs that satisfy both the summer's need for rock anthems and sweltering afternoon double-headers. Drummer Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3, Golden Smog) and REM's Peter Buck round out the squad, as they spin tales of ill-fated drinking binges, near mythical icons, folk heroes and the overlooked man who changed the game. A passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the state of the sport and a hip soundtrack to the backstage party at America's game. Beck - Modern Guilt (Interscope) ................................................................... Beck's new album Modern Guilt, produced with Danger Mouse. Modern Guilt is a tightly assembled group of songs that range in lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off the cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. Musically, the album's ten tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and pop classicism, while consistently manifesting Beck and Danger Mouse's shared interest in psych-rock, folk, electronic minimalism and orchestration. The Dutchess & The Duke - She's the Dutchess, He's the Duke (Hardly Art) ................................................................... Compared to "Between The Buttons"-era Stones, Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, The Dutchess & The Duke's songs mark a turning point for Kimberly Morrison and Jesse Lortz. Each song touts magnetic guitar lines and vocals so straightforward that they belie all other intricacies. By taking tonal cues from darker, acid-tinged 60s pop and sweetening it with just the right amount of meticulously constructed harmonies, they are managing to pull off one of the trickier combinations in songwriting - sounding timeless and utterly modern at the same time. Earlimart - Hymn and Her (Shout Factory) ................................................................... In a time when subgenres can seem as numerous as artists, it's a relief to find straightforwardly sincere, modern-rock songwriting done well. Earlimart's 6th full-length doesn't break new ground - those Elliott Smith comparisons will keep on coming - or approach the sublime sexiness of fellow L.A.-ers Rilo Kiley. But it's an undeniably solid set of droney hooks, with Ariana Murray's merrily fatalistic laments neatly balancing out Aaron Espinoza's catchier bits. Leila - Blood, Looms and Blooms (Warp) ................................................................... Graduating from Aphex Twin's Rephlex label to Warp, UK producer/DJ Leila pulls out all the stops on ''Blood, Looms and Blooms''. From collaborating with chanteuse (and muse to Tricky and Danger Mouse) Martina Topley Bird, to incorporating everything from deep techno to postmodern hip-hop and classic soundtrack styles, ''Blood, Looms and Blooms'' is the most original album you're likely to hear in 2008. Melvins - Nude with Boots (Ipecac) ................................................................... The Melvins' remarkable Houdini/Stoner Witch/Stag run of bone-rattling, first-class heaviness in the mid-90s was updated with 2006's charming Senile Animal. And it was no fluke, because now comes the even better Nude With Boots, studio album number 19 (!). Bassist Jared Warren and drummer Coady Willis (aka Big Business) return as the perfect-fit rhythm section for lifers Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover, who are still communicating in their own avant-boogie metal language like twins separated at birth. Among the best (and catchiest) songs they have written during their quarter-decade project in hard-rock deconstruction, summoning and scrambling Zeppelin, Saint Vitus, late-80s thrash, and... vintage Melvins. Willie Nelson / Wynton Marsalis - Two Men with the Blues (Blue Note) ................................................................... The event was simply billed as "Willie Nelson Sings the Blues," but the historic two-night stand at Lincoln Center was far more than that. Call it a summit meeting between two American icons, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis, two of the most significant figures in modern-day country and jazz, who discovered common ground in their love for jazz standards and the blues. Their performance stirred the sounds of New Orleans, Nashville, Austin and NYC into a brilliantly programmed mix that was equal parts down-home and cosmopolitan, with plenty of swing and just a touch of melancholy. Wynton rarely sounds so relaxed and both of these musical giants are clearly having the time of their lives together on these new interpretations of some of the greatest songs of the 20th century. Ratatat - LP3 (XL) ................................................................... Ratatat make a thick instrumental soup with equal dashes of analog touch and digital chaos. Everything from slide guitar to sleigh bells and harsh metal riffs to club dance beats get chopped up and mixed up in their concoction that gets the whole crowd moving. With their 3rd studio album, the characteristic guitar style is still present, but there are an abundance of new textures, from Wurlitzer and mellotron to live rather than programmed percussion. Ron Sexsmith - Exit Strategy of the Soul (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Ron Sexsmith has been writing and performing his earnest, soulful songs for nearly 30 years now, engendering praise from a litany of artists too influential and many to name. On his latest album, he expands his musical canon with vaulted yet direct string arrangements and sweeping horn sections, resulting in a work equal in musical breadth and emotional depth. Recorded in both the cold of classical London and the sweaty flamboyance of Havana, Cuba, Exit Strategy is a study of the beauty that can come from the heartfelt melding of seemingly contrary ideas, be they musical, cultural or emotional. Delving deep into Cuban music, Sexsmith recruited legendary Cuban musicians Amaury Perez and Alexander Abreu as well as experienced arranger Joaquin Betancourt to lend latin punch and style to his sweeping, yearnful melodies. Also appearing on Exit Strategy of the Soul is standout track 'Brandy Alexander,' co-written with fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Feist. Patti Smith & Kevin Shields - The Coral Sea (PASK) ................................................................... Legendary artist Patti Smith and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields are set to release a double disc set of their live performance of The Coral Sea on their own PASK imprint. The Coral Sea is Patti Smith's posthumous homage to her friend and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and the title to her 1997 book. Kevin Shields accompanies her on guitars and effects and creates a haunting backdrop to the spoken prose. The recordings were made at sold out performances at the QEH in London. One critic said: A kind of screaming requiem, The Coral Sea describes Mapplethorpe's terminal illness. Intense, layered electronics surged to a discordant climax as Patti Smith read her poem, the words sailing over the noise like an ocean liner, with the black and white video showing the ocean, the liner and the grey twilight of grief. The poem tells the story of Mapplethorpe on a final voyage to see the stars of the Southern Cross before he dies. Son, Ambulance - Someone Else's Deja Vu (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... Their third full-length marks a departure from 2005's "Key", offers a sharper glimpse into Joseph Knapp's distinct songwriting abilities, and reflects a depth of complexity and dream logic made perfect for a sublime musical experience. A cohesive palette of subtle pop psychedelia encompassing myriad musical genres. Think of this record as great accompaniment to a day where your only responsibilities might include reading a book, petting your cat, or thinking of an old friend. Wax Poetics - #29 June/July 2008 ................................................................... 29 issues in, and the Wax Poetics crew still hasn't run out of wonderful music to write about - and in fact, they seem to be digging even deeper than before - covering key soul and funk figures from the 70s, as well as key up-and-coming talents from the global underground! Herbie Hancock and Spoonie Gee are the cover stars this time around - and the issue also contains features on Lalo Schifrin, Lee Fields, Sam Rivers, Cinematic Orchestra, Cedric Brooks, Jackson Conti, and the discographical skills of Freddie Fresh! Always essential reading - and a bargain at any price. Saul Williams - The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust (Fader) ................................................................... First establishing himself as an influential poet, and then as an award-winning screenwriter/actor, Saul Williams then went on to establish himself as an MC. His approach to MCing, though, wasn't exactly in line with the traditional school of Hip-Hop. His rhymes weren't really rhymes but rather his poetry delivered in a frenzied spoken word manner that was more rhythmic than alliterate. Produced by Trent Reznor. CD contains 5 tracks not available on the digital format.
