Hello friends. Its a new week and we are still adjusting to our new surroundings here at 202 North Walnut. The whiff of paint mixed with bread is fading. Everything is finding its right place. In case you haven't noticed, we have a new listening station and another one on its way next month, so not only did we move, but we are in fact developing, maturing, growing. Stop in and give us some feedback about what else we need, what you want. In the meantime grab some hot summer jamz and go see some live music! And don't forget that you can also access all this information at our newishly redesigned web-home at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ - take good care. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 7/15/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Abe Vigoda - Skeleton (PPM) ................................................................... LA punk's secret weapon bring forth a sound that's tempting and beautiful, yet melodic and tropical. "Skeleton" is a twisted joy ride through four boys' private party. Soothing parts reminiscent of Captain Beefheart and My Bloody Valentine, or some punk with a haunting reggaeton pulse that makes you move. Abe Vigoda have become fixtures and disciples of that city's Smell scene, younger vibe brothers to flag-carriers No Age, HEALTH, and Mika Miko. Black Devil Disco Club - Eight Oh Eight (Lo) ................................................................... Black Devil are an electronic duo who operate under pseudonyms but in reality are two French producers of library music. The group's 1978 debut album, Disco Club was unearthed by Rephlex and rereleased in 2006. Many doubted the authenticity of the record, due to its futuristic sound. In 2004, Rephlex released a remix album with Luke Vibert taking on the lead remix under his disco acid alias Kerrier District. After the release, the group reformed under the name Black Devil Disco Club and they have since performed live as well as released 3 additional albums. Daedelus - Love to Make Music By (Ninja Tune) ................................................................... New release by Daedelus, and it is the Los Angeles musician's best and most playfully accessible album yet. Guests include Grammy Award-winning rapper Paperboy, producer Michael Johnson (The Lilys, Holopaw), Taz Arnold and Om'mas Keith (Sa-Ra), N'fa (1200 Techniques crew), and chanteuse Erika Rose. 2LP version in 2 weeks. The Delicious - Postcard to My Sewing Circle EP (Joyful Noise) ................................................................... In response to the over-intellectualized, exclusive world of high art, Bloomington's David Woodruff dropped out of IU art school to form The Delicious. With accessibility and sincerity as its goals, they craft strangely accessible indie-art-pop in their own complex, honest, light-hearted, and well-equipped fashion. Their disjointed pop sensibility combined with high-minded, jazz-degree-carrying musicianship results in an album that is complex and mathematical, yet always tasteful, unpretentious, and addictive. The group's first release for Joyful Noise, Postcard to My Sewing Circle, is chock-full of elegantly constructed power-pop - able to impress math-rock enthusiasts, jazz purists, and indie-rock snobs alike. Einsturzende Neubauten - The Jewels (Potomak) ................................................................... Fifteen experimental musical miniatures from the industrial legends. Elaborate package includes a 40-page booklet in full color, a text by Blixa Bargeld, lyrics in German and English, and a 40-minute QuickTime video document. Released on the band's own Potomak imprint. Neubauten is an ever changing entity formed in West Berlin in 1980. Initially seen as part of the second wave of industrial bands, filling the space left when Throbbing Gristle terminated their mission. Their early output fit the term well as it used the sounds of machinery, metal-on-metal, construction site equipment, and treated tape loops, creating harsh soundscapes and rhythmic textures reminiscent of krautrock. Flying Lotus - LA EP 1 (Warp) ................................................................... The first of 3 LA EPs from Flying Lotus - rich, textural and sublimely soulful tunes from one of the more inventive soundscape makers on the Warp label! LA EP one features a couple of the best tracks from the fine Los Angeles LP plus four worthy non album tracks that meld Asian string accented grooves, layers of crackling beats and synth, spare atmosphere and and heavier dynamics when the mood fits. Albert Hammond Jr. - Como Te Llama? (Red Ink) ................................................................... This is the follow up to Albert's critically acclaimed debut release Yours To Keep. NY Times says 'Albert writes phenomenal songs!' Spins proclaims 'Top shelf indie pop. 4 Stars' and Esquire picks it as the 2007 Esky Award winner for 'Best Solo Debut'. Albert Hammond, Jr. is a musician and member of the garage rock band, The Strokes for which he mostly plays rhythm guitar, but occasionally plays lead as well (eg. in "Last Nite"). Red 2LP version also available. Karl Hector & The Malcouns - Sahara Swing (Now Again) ................................................................... Now-Again Records follows up The Heliocentrics' percussive excursions into the astral realms of psychedelia with an album of Afro-tinged funk music originating from the Southern Sahara and recorded in Germany. Karl Hector has, to date, only appeared on one 7-inch, from 1996, as the leader of the Funk Pilots. For this album, he has teamed up with Jay Whitefield (producer and guitarist for the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers) and Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founders of The Malcouns. Alongside Bo Baral, other members of the Poets of Rhythm and crack Munich- based session musicians, Whitefield, Myland and Curlija have crafted nearly 20 tracks that follow the musical roads that Hector has travelled. The underlying groove that ties these ideas together, of course, is as rooted in James Brown as it is Fela Kuti. As informed by Mulatu Astatke of Ethiopia as it is by Jean-Claude Vannier and Can. The Hold Steady - Stay Positive (Vagrant) ................................................................... The Hold Steady's shtick is old-fashioned through and through, beginning with Thin Lizzy and ending with Springsteen, performed by men advanced enough to have experienced those touchstones first or second hand. And look at them- not exactly The Strokes, are they? But it was precisely their enthusiastic unoriginality, the fact that the cliches were piled on so thick and so fast, that they triumphed. And placed next to their previous unapologetically feel good record, Stay Positive sounds so immediately brighter and more muscular, it is undoubtedly a great sign. The production is really cranked up and they're clearly determined to not be so easily pegged this time around. Contains 3 bonus tracks on the digipak CD. Vinyl soon. Icy Demons - Miami Ice (Obey Your Brain) ................................................................... Miami Ice is the upbeat and wide-ranging album from Chicago/Philadelphia ensemble Icy Demons. As on previous releases, the band's altered pop music draws on a wide range of musical vocabulary, sometimes within a single song. Icy Demons cofounders Chris Powell (aka Pow Pow) and Griffin Rodriguez (aka Blue Hawaii) use an odd assortment of vintage keyboards and ethnic percussion, and evoke a past that actually might prove to be the future. Features guest appearances by Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Josh Abrams (Prefuse 73, the Sea and Cake), Tomeka Reed, and Russell Higbee (Man Man). John Mayer - Where The Light Is: Live In Los Angeles (Sony) ................................................................... This 2CD/DVD set captures the Grammy Award winning, platinum selling singer and songwriter live, in the element where fans love him the most. The concert includes 3 sets: an acoustic performance, a rare set with John Mayer Trio (with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino), as well as a set featuring Mayer's full band, all recorded on December 8, 2007 in LA. This album features the quintessential performer as an acoustic songwriter, electric guitar slinger, bluesman and vocalist. Highlights include many of Mayer's biggest hits, new interpretations of cover songs, and a previously unreleased gem. John Mellencamp - Life, Death, Love & Freedom (Hear) ................................................................... Free bonus 45 w/ purchase! Mellencamp has characterized this album as a collection of "modern electric folk songs." With backing from his legendary touring band, the album's 14 tracks were recorded at his studio in Bloomington and mixed in Los Angeles with T Bone Burnett behind the boards for all of the sessions. Mellencamp cites Burnett's production as key to "finding the soul of each song." This album will be the first ever release in the CODE format. T Bone Burnett and his engineers developed this proprietary audio technology which creates high-definition audio files that are indistinguishable from the original master tapes. The resonance, warmth and presence that has been realized is unprecedented in the digital era. The CODE version is a DVD that will come packaged with a standard CD version of the album at no additional cost. LP on 8/5. Metal in the Microwave - Come Talk to Me (self) ................................................................... Come Talk To Me is MITM's second album. It was recorded and mastered at Russian Recording by Mike Bridavsky. Hailing from Bloomington this 4 piece concoction showcases all its members as songwriters and vocalists. With this collaboration the band is able to create a wide variety of musical sounds and styles in between (and sometimes even during) each of their songs, with tracks ranging from and influenced by: Several different Genres of rock and roll, to obscure and sometimes humerous dance songs about the paranormal, to country, to grungy folk rock, to doo-wop, and with many other styles thrown in the mix. MITM's CD Release Party is Saturday July 19th at Uncle Fester's w/ Prizzy Prizzy Please, Push-Pull, Naomi Rae, and Elliot Denning. This will also most likely be their last show in Bloomington, as a member is moving. Mojo Magazine - Sub Pop / Nirvana cover ................................................................... Two decades on from the grunge explosion that turned an independent Seattle record label into a globally revered name, MOJO reunites the sonic pioneers, key players and riotous music for an exclusive journey through Sub Pop's unmatched history. Plus an interview with soul legend Solomon Burke, Sigur Ros, Oasis on their upcoming 7th album, Bo Diddley remembered, Steve Winwood and much more. Plus a FREE CD of some of Sub Pop's greatest gems. Nas - untitled (Def Jam) ................................................................... Nas is back and more controversial than ever on his new "untitled" release. Nas studies and lyrically dissects some of our most divisive issues: race, inequality, poverty and power. And who better to stir up debate than the man most consider one of the top five emcees in the history of the game? Warning: cover art depicts the number Zorro did on Nas' back while he was lying on his side. Initial copies come with a bonus mix CD -- The N!gg3r Tape -- assembled by DJ Green Lantern. CD now, LP due July 29. Negativland - Thigmotactic (Seeland) ................................................................... Moving in a very different direction than other recent Negativland releases, and with a decidedly surreal bent, these eccentric, toe-tapping, electronic, folk-pop, noise songs are strung together to form a continuous and cohesive listening experience, with themes emerging around meat, feet, pants, milk, cows, trucks, Herb Alpert, Richard Nixon, and even love. Includes a 36-page color booklet. Rocky Votolato - s/t [reissue] (Second Nature) ................................................................... Rocky composed these 12 songs late '96/early '97 in Seattle. He set up two microphones in a basement and recorded the entire record live in a 4-hour period. What was captured is an intimate and organic picture of what these songs would have sounded like if you were listening to him play for you in a dark quiet room. No overproducing or effects of any kind- just an unpolluted look at the songs. Originally released on a small indie label, Rocky's debut has long been out-of-print. This understated and honest record marks the beginning of a journey for one of the most original songwriters in America today. Wire - Object 47 (Pink Flag) ................................................................... In the five years since Wire's last full-length album, Send, the band has expounded, reviewed, contracted, lain dormant, recovered, expanded, and shed an old skin and grown a new one. Wire is not the same as it was before- but then Wire is never the same as it was before... Object 47 (the 47th piece in their discography) is nonetheless their 11th studio album. It is the second product of an arc of work that began with the EP Read And Burn 03, and stands as a confident statement of where they are today. While retaining Wire's mix of an avant-garde mindset with classic pop timing, this album boasts 'tunes with zoom', a unique formula that somehow manages to sound wholly Wire (in a classic sense) and wholly contemporary.
