If you know us, you know that Landlocked loves being local. When you shop locally-owned businesses like ours, your money is re-circulated over and over and creates up to 75% more tax revenue to our community and state. When you shop online with out-of-state companies, it doesn't contribute a dime to the local economy. Support the local, support your friends, support eachother. This message is brought to you by your conscience. Now back to our regularly scheduled new music extravaganza! NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 7/29/2007 ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Johnny Flynn - A Larum (Lost Highway) ................................................................... Lost Highway debut album from British singer songwriter, Johnny Flynn. Flynn's music is brimming over with heart, soul and intelligence. Drawing on diverse influences - The Pixies, Vaughn Williams and anti-folk pioneer Dianne Cluck are all name checked. Johnny draws on a century's worth of folk, blues and country to create a sound that dwells profoundly in the now. Neil Halstead - One Mighty Engine (Brushfire) ................................................................... Neil is a current member of Mojave 3 and former frontman of Slowdive. This a record that can make one be happy, sad, and laugh all at once. Neil is very English and mumbles phrases like 'pithy liner', 'dangerous dolt' and other local slang. Neil has never been blatant or obvious with his words. He writes songs that are very personal to him, and then allows space for everyone to take their own meaning away from his lyrics. Neil recorded this record partially at The Solar Powered Plastic Plant in L.A. and the rest in his hometown of Cornwall, England. He surfed in the mornings, then drank beer and recorded with various friends in the evening. Neil is an old soul and this solo record is welcoming, warm, clever and kind. RIYL Nick Drake, Iron & Wine, Mark Kozelek, Joe Pernice Krallice - s/t (Profound Lore) ................................................................... In what will become one of the most cursed releases in the realm of black metal this year, the vision conjured up by Mick Barr (Orthrelm) and Colin Marston (Dysrhythmia) is an overwhelming amalgam of epic time-stretching visceral black metal that recalls the spirit brought forth with such acts as Burzum, Weakling, Gorgoroth, and Ulver. Krallice not only adds to their prolific repertoire, but also strengthens it. With its layered, tremolo weaving, hypnotic and twisted guitar (dis)harmonics, vicious use of melody, elongated time-structures and Barr's unique cavermous harsh wails, the debut Krallice album is a massive and surging work of demented unforgiving black metal art. Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos - Daytrotter Sessions EP (Epic) ................................................................... Margot are an 8-piece circle of friends from Indianapolis who, in the spring of 2005, quietly released one of the most beloved indescribable records in recent memory, The Dust of Retreat. The band signed to Epic Records and has been writing and recording their major label debut with Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine). In anticipation for their upcoming full-length, we have The Daytrotter Sessions EP. Daytrotter is a website which features acoustic performances from dozens of major and indie artists from their studio in Rock Island, IL. Margot will be the first band to formally release the songs from their session, which features a track list of new material along with The Dust of Retreat favorite, Bookworm. Rusty Truck - Luck's Changing Lanes (Ryko) ................................................................... In his time as chief photographer at Rolling Stone, Mark Seliger shot the top names in music, with whom he developed lasting friendships. During that period Seliger also began writing his own music. Jakob Dylan heard Seliger's material and was impressed enough to invite him to his studio to record and write. Dylan uses the phrase lonesome music to describe the Rusty Truck sound and Seliger agrees: It is kind of lonesome. It has a lot of my influences, everything from ZZ Top to Neil Young, Leon Russell and Tex-Mex to Wilco. Originally available as a limited release under the title Broken Promises, this debut album has been expanded and thoroughly re-imagined as Luck's Changing Lanes, giving Mark Seliger's songs and unique American imagery the presentation they deserve. Its been quite a journey but this beautiful collection speaks for itself. Special guests: T Bone Burnett, Sheryl Crow, Jakob Dylan, Lenny Kravitz, Willie Nelson, Rob Thomas, Gillian Welch. Sonic Youth - Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth EP (SYR) ................................................................... Andre Sider af Sonic Youth presents the complete Other Sides Of Sonic Youth improvised live performance from the 2005 Roskilde Festival in Denmark, featuring Sonic Youth (with Jim O'Rourke) and guests Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and Japanese sound artist Masami Akita (aka Merzbow). The single piece performed was a structured improvisation which for 60 minutes added and subtracted musicians one by one until only Akita was left onstage. This installment of Sonic Youth's series of experimental and mostly instrumental releases is available in a CD-only edition on the band's own SYR label. Sparks - Exotic Creatures of the Deep (Lil Beethoven) ................................................................... Thirty-seven years after their debut LP, Sparks release Exotic Creatures of the Deep, their 21st studio album. Recorded in their Los Angeles studio, the brothers Mael once again display their extraordinary ability to create, to challenge, and to confound. Should it be possible for 2 people to be so fresh, so vital, so unpredictable, and so incomparably individual? It could be seen as a natural evolution from their last two records, on which pop-opera, rock, and high drama combined to redefine Sparks' sound. Takka Takka - Migration (Ernest Jenning) ................................................................... Takka Takka's new record is called Migration. It was lovingly produced by Sean Greenhalgh of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. It was recorded in Brooklyn and features performances by Bryan Devendort of the National, Lee Sargent of CYHSY, Olga Bell of Bell, and Charles Burst of the Occasion. James Jackson Toth (Wooden Wand) - Waiting in Vain (Ryko) ................................................................... For his solo debut, Tennessee-based Toth has conjured a mysterious, alluring world; Toth's scenarios are intriguingly tawdry and his sounds tantalizing, with layered, almost-dreamlike harmonies; touches of blues, country and soul and the occasional flash of punk swagger. He assumes the role of storyteller, maybe even confessor, spinning inter-linked tales of hope and misfortune, romantic trials and spiritual yearning. Waiting In Vain is the first album that Toth, long a cult figure, has released as a solo artist, and it marks a new beginning for him from the several years he experimented with a folk-psychedelic rock hybrid, putting out numerous discs under variations of the name Wooden Wand. Wild Sweet Orange - We Have Cause to Be Uneasy (Canvasback) ................................................................... Wild Sweet Orange's full-length debut is a work of exquisite power, its songs propelled by edgy emotion and a cathartic yearning for connection. Tracks such as "Ten Dead Dogs" and "Sour Milk" find the Birmingham, Alabama-based rock outfit honing an intimate and individualistic sound that veers unrestrained from aching intimacy to a turbulent, seething intensity. For singer and songwriter Preston Lovinggood, the album's provocative title serves as both an ideal statement of intent as well as a strong assertion of identity. Andre Williams & The New Orleans Hellhounds - Can You Deal With It? (Bloodshot) ................................................................... This is some heavy punk-soul, brothers and sisters. "Mr. Rhythm" (a nickname given to him by Redd Foxx) is a R&B legend. He wrote "Shake A Tail Feather," and wrote and sang such raunch classics as "Bacon Fat" (covered by the Cramps), "Greasy Chicken," and the epitome of cautionary tales about little girls, "Jail Bait." He worked at Motown and with Ike Turner. The Hellhounds, with their fat horns, fuzzed out guitars and crack rhythm section, provide backing with all the subtlety of a bike chain beatdown. Add to the mix the 9th Ward mad scientist virtuoso oddball genius Quintron on organ and this band lays down a serious base coat of soulful wallop befitting the legacy of Andre. You have been duly warned, oh seekers of the rock, that this record has more grind in it than a 3 am cup of diner coffee. The Wire - July 2008 - Mark Stewart cover ................................................................... On The Cover: Mark Stewart - The former Pop Group and Maffia godfather talks up his new outernationalist album and warns against being absorbed into a consumerist "flatpack reality". Plus: Trumpeter Bill Dixon, improv trio The Necks, .snd's Invisible Jukebox, Pianist Vijay Iyer's Epiphany on Cecil Taylor, Rustie, Franz Hautzinger, Materials Library in Cross Platform and more. VA - American Teen OST (Almost Gold) ................................................................... The movie American Teen intimately follows the lives of 4 teenagers in Warsaw, Indiana through their senior year of high school. The film was directed by Nanette Burstein (On The Ropes, The Kid Stays In The Picture) who previously received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary and the Sundance Special Jury Prize for Documentary. Soundtrack features music from Black Kids, The Ting Tings and MGMT, as well as exclusive tracks from Frou Frou, Nyles Lannon and Ryan Lindsey. VA - Rock The Net: Musicians for Net Neutrality (Thirsty Ear) ................................................................... Net Neutrality is the principle that preserves an open internet. It's all about choice, freedom of expression and access to information. It's also the manner in which many of us discover new music. But if telecommunications and cable coimpanies have their way, you may only be able to hear what THEY want you to hear. Wilco, Bright Eyes, They Might Be Giants, Portastatic, Aimee Mann, Guster, Matthew Shipp, Palomar, The Wrens, DJ Spooky, BC Camplight, David Bazan, David Miller, Free Form Funky Freqs and The Classic Brown have all donated an original track to the compilation.
