Who's the black private dick / That's a sex machine to all the chicks? Who is the man / That would risk his neck for his brother man? Who's the cat that won't cop out / When there's danger all about. He's a complicated man / But no one understands him but his woman. Rest in Peace Isaac Hayes, Black Moses, Chef, Truck Turner. You will always be a bad mother- (shut your mouth!) But I'm talkin' about Shaft (Then we can dig it...) NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/12/2008 ................................................................... (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) Atavist / Nadja - II: Points at Infinity EP (Profound Lore) ................................................................... The second collaboration between the UK's best and most prominent sludge/doom metal band (Atavist), and one of today's most recognizable, in-demand, and respected drone/doom/experimental musical acts (Nadja). This second collaboration presents a sound picture with significantly more substance and depth; while still experimental in nature, Points at Infinity exemplifies growth and expansion by both of these enigmatic bands. Lewis Black - Anticipation (Comedy Central) ................................................................... Back from his Grammy Award win for Best Comedy Album 2006 for "The Carnegie Hall Performance", Lewis has a whole new set of what's setting him off. From the insanity of golf and losing his virginity to a skipping album to his favorite time of year - Christmas in Vegas - "Anticipation" could just be his best album yet. Dianogah - Qhnnnl (Southern) ................................................................... Having spent the last 12 years making music with 2 basses and a drum kit, Chicago trio Dianogah have decided it's time to mix things up. For their 3rd album, they claim to have been inspired by heavier music, particularly bands like Melvins and Messhugah. They bought a distortion pedal. They brought violinist Andrew Bird into the studio as well, and vocalist Stephanie Morris. Real vocals on a Dianogah record! The Final Solution - Brotherman OST (Numero Group) ................................................................... He was a pusher that became a preacher. A gangster pimp serving soup from the trunk of his Coup Deville. A mutant cross between Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. The producers commissioned a soundtrack to be performed by The Final Solution, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side. The 10-song album draws deeply from Curtis Mayfield's well, but the proof in the pudding is Carl Wolfolk's unique guitar style - a combination of flamenco and funk that stabs around the four part harmonies. In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was cancelled. Dragged around for 30 years by Wolfolk, the tapes of his life's work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, Numero tasked Minneapolis Burlesque of North America to paint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxploitation poster geek. Inara George & Van Dyke Parks - An Invitation (Everloving) ................................................................... Inara George is daughter of Lowell George, founder of Little Feat. She is also one-half of The Bird and the Bee and sang on two Idlewild albums. An Invitation is an intimate collaboration between she and legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks. The result is a lush, elegant, fully orchestrated song cycle, a catalog of experiences equally inspired by the sophistication of Frank Sinatra and the storied, cinematic wonder of Richard Sherman's oeuvre. Throughout the record, Van Dyke's cerebral (psychedelic, even) arrangements twist the music into multiple directions at once, a swirling canvas suspended over the sonic mantelpiece of Inara's songs, bewitching and perplexing, a truly organic achievement among friends in an era of artificial pleasures. Zach Hill - Astrological Straits (Ipecac) ................................................................... Debut solo album from the drummer of Northern California noise-rock outfit Hella. Contributing guests include Les Claypool, Chino Moreno, Randy Randall and Dean Spunt (No Age), Tyler Pope (!!!/LCD Soundsystem), Marco Benevento, Marnie Stern, Jonathon Hicshke (The Flying Luttenbachers), Hella bandmates Carson McWhirter and Josh Hill, and several others. Jesu / Battle of Mice - EP (Robotic Empire) ................................................................... Several years in the making, the long-awaited and limited Jesu/Battle Of Mice split is finally available. Jesu is masterminded by Justin Broadrick, (founding member of Godflesh and Napalm Death). Battle of Mice features Josh Graham of Red Sparowes/A Storm of Light and Julie Christmas from Made Out of Babies. Both formats come in deluxe packaging and are limited to one-time pressings of 2000 copies each. Mojo Magazine - Beatles Cover ................................................................... 40 years on, The Beatles' White Album still holds a plethora of secrets and continues to defy definition. Yoko Ono, Donovan, Oasis and many more join MOJO for the first part of their gigantic, 30-page foray into John, Paul, George and Ringo's most intriguing record ever. Also an interview with Randy Newman, Teddy Thompson, Marianne Faithfull, R.E.M., X-Ray Spex, Lee Scratch Perry, Gorillaz and a FREE CD of White Album covers by Joan As Policewoman, Vashti Bunyan & Max Richter, Johnny Flynn, Gabriella Cilmi, Field Music, Julie Fowlis and many, many more! Oxford Collapse - Bits (Sub Pop) ................................................................... They have a charming lack of guile, combined with a focus on the better of the 80s college rock cognoscenti and Trouser Press favorites. This record is the sound of fun turning into purpose, of a great band writing and playing their best songs, and knowing how great that feels. It's all heart and ingenuity, the joyous racket that connects C86 pop to the present. Tittsworth - Twelve Steps (Defend) ................................................................... Having spent many years touring, remixing and producing for others, the Baltimore native has finally honed his skills into 12 Steps, his debut outing. From the stunning electronica of 'Haiku' to the subtle eastern melodies of 'Broke Ass N*gga' it's clear that we're in for a hell of a ride, leaving the listener with is 40 minutes of quality hip-hop from one of the genre's finest faces. Ben Weaver - The Ax in the Oak (Bloodshot) ................................................................... Drawn together by mutual friends and a love for the shimmering, electronic pop of Austrian-based musician Christian Fennesz, Weaver and producer Brian Deck (Iron & Wine, Califone, Modest Mouse) made a conscious effort to take a more experimental approach to create the mise en scene for Weaver's songs. And the result is an organic album with electronic elements, thoughtfully complimenting Weaver's earth-honest and indelicate delivery, while also not completely neglecting his folk-roots. Racebannon - Acid or Blood (Southern) ................................................................... Bloomington's own! Racebannon's most caustic, abrasive, fluid, and balls-out riff-heavy endeavor, and with it a completely new vantage point. Eleven tracks of unchecked emotion (recorded by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording and mastered by Bob Weston) unfurl as the band unleashes its working-class destruction without a care in the world for convention or marketability. Racebannon are cursed with the ability to make metal music more interesting than countless other thrash, castle or black metal bands could dream of. Hamilton, Ontario is the Cleveland of Canada: a bombed-out, post-industrial rust spot at the ass-end of Lake Ontario. It was probably not a fun place to be in the mid-1970s, unless of course your goal was to form a legendary lost psychedelic proto-punk band. Maybe the greatest band to never release an LP during their existence, Hamilton's own Simply Saucer have a lot in common with their Cle-rock brethren downstream: a bleak outlook, a love/hate relationship with technology, highbrow/lowbrow art fixations, and a deep love of the Stooges. It's easy to imagine them sharing a bill with Rocket from the Tombs and the Styrenes... all opening for Hawkwind! Cyborgs Revisited collects most of their output, and serves as their one-and-only album. Absolutely essential! - Jason ------------------------------------------------------------------ More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
