Remember back, way back - back in June of this year when Landlocked still lived on Washington Street. Ahh the good ole days! We had a neighbor and a friend named Boxcar Books. Since our move, they too have moved onto greener pastures and this friday evening is a celebration of their new location at 408 E. 6th Street, next to the Runcible Spoon. If you haven't yet checked out their new digs, now is your chance! Food and drink provided by the Spoon and live music with the Fatted Calf String Band. Stop by and get some reading material to go with these excessive new releases... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/19/2008 (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) ................................................................... Arabian Prince - Innovative Life Anthology 1984-89 (Stones Throw) ................................................................... Arabian Prince's story is undeniable. His life reflects the innovation of the early West Coast hip-hop scene, from his days amongst the likes of electro-rap legends Egyptian Lover and the World Class Wreckin Cru to his work with N.W.A. This anthology, a collection of his groundbreaking electro-rap work recorded between 1984 and 1989, not only compels the listener through sound, but through prose. Through Arabian Prince's music and life story, Stones Throw Records is proud to present a glimpse into an overlooked chapter in hip-hop's history. David Byrne - Big Love: Hymnal (Suma) ................................................................... David Byrne's Big Love: Hymnal contains the original instrumental score to the 2nd season of the popular HBO series Big Love along with other recent compositions. This collection contains the first new songs from David Byrne since his 2004 release Grown Backwards. "I had an idea to base my scoring loosely on Mormon hymns. That would presumably hint at the unspoken spiritual underpinnings that motivate many of the characters' actions - or justify them, in some characters' cases. I got hymnals and Mormon Hymns CDs, read up on the Mormon Church and began to practice writing 'fake' hymns." - David Byrne Glen Campbell - Meet Glen Campbell (Capitol) ................................................................... Meet Glen Campbell welcomes the discovery and the re-discovery of the legend, his music, and his artistry. With a distinguished music career that spans more than five decades, Glen Campbell has returned to his longtime label home Capitol Records recording 10 new tracks for Meet Glen Campbell. Includes his takes on famous tracks from The Replacements, Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, U2, Velvet Underground, Green Day, John Lennon, Jackson Browne and Travis. The Dandy Warhols - Earth to the Dandy Warhols (Beat the World) ................................................................... The album is quintessential Dandys, pulling together the diverse sounds and influences that have always characterized their music, and full of the same dry vigor that s made them world famous. From the Some Girls-era Rolling Stones-meets-Talking Heads Welcome to the Third World, to the campy Mis Amigos, to the psychedelic rock of Beast of Saints, Earth to the Dandy Warhols is pleasure ride that allows you to fully enjoy the trip while still keeping you on your toes. The band reached out to their friends, too, inviting Dire Strait's Mark Knopfler and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell to join in on the rollicking Love Song. Death Vessel - Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us (Sub Pop) ................................................................... The music is haunting and spiritual, mysterious and kind, ageless and contemporary, soulful and psychedelic. In short, it's where the requiem meets the rock 'n' roll. And that voice! As powerful, high, and clear as early '70s Neil Young, Thibodeau has one of the most indelible in millenial music, and on this sterling long-player, it is still the star of the show. Recommended! Don Caballero - Punkgasm (Relapse) ................................................................... Punkgasm is the sixth studio album by Don Cab, a Pittsburgh-based Math Rock band. Punkgasm explodes with all of the band's legendary trademarks: wildly inventive poly-rhythms; layers of looping guitar acrobatics; rich melodies & textures; & expansive compositions that evolve & unfold from start to finish. The album's more relaxed feel sees the band pushing their sound in a host of surprising new directions. The Duhks - Fast Paced World (Sugar Hill) ................................................................... Hailed by The NY Times as one of the artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement, the Duhks continue the evolution. Previously, The Duhks played red-hot sets of Irish reels and soulful interpretations of songs penned by the likes of Gillian Welch, and accompanied by Cuban percussion, John Doyle style guitar, and old-time clawhammer banjo. Now, the vocalist and percussionist have been replaced by siblings Sarah and Christian Dugas. Sarah's vocals are more soulful and the Cuban percussion kit has been replaced by a full drum kit, resulting in a more pop/rock and less folkie mix. Add in a modern production, mixing in lots of studio experimentation and electronics and for a unique album for sure. Fiery Furnaces - Remember (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... This double CD/triple LP live album features 51 tracks spanning the band's entire catalog and was recorded over the past three years of constant touring. CD is limited to 9,000 copies and comes in a deluxe 6-panel digipack with coupon to download an exclusive bonus track. Vinyl is limited to 2,000 copies and is housed in a custom-made old style tip-on gatefold jacket with a pasted-in flap that holds the third LP. Also includes download coupon. The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound (Side One Dummy) ................................................................... Although New Brunswick, NJ's Gaslight Anthem have only been around a couple years, they've become one of the punk underground's most celebrated acts. They've toured with Against Me, The Loved Ones, and The Bouncing Souls. Their Side One Dummy debut reconciles their love of classic rock and soul icons Bruce Springsteen, Otis Redding, and Tom Petty with their NJ punk roots to create a unique musical amalgam. GZA - Pro Tools (Babygrande) ................................................................... GZA is a member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan and is one of the most renowned and continually relevant emcees of all time. GZA's contributions have driven the phenomenal success of the 2008 Wu-Tang Clan reunion album "8 Diagrams" as well as two of independent Hip Hop's flagship releases: "Think Differently Music: Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture" and the DJ Muggz/GZA collaboration "Grandmasters". With an entrenched and rabidly loyal fan base, Pro Tools marks the long awaited return of one of Hip-Hop's most revered and respected emcees. Juliana Hatfield - How to Walk Away (Ye Olde) ................................................................... Juliana Hatfield, no less an intriguing, compelling character today, has been working as a recording artist for twenty years. With the release of "How To Walk Away," her 10th solo album, she again proves herself to be an uncompromising artist with impeccable pop instincts, a disdain for artifice, a completely original voice, and a contrarian streak. "How To Walk Away" was produced by Andy Chase (of Ivy) at Stratosphere Sound in NYC and features guests Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs) and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) on vocals, Jody Porter (Fountains Of Wayne) on guitar, Tracy Bonham on violin, and more. Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians - Luminous Groove [5CD box] (Yep Roc) ................................................................... The second in a series of retrospective box sets. In 1985 Robyn's newest group, with ex-Soft Boys Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor plus keyboardist Roger Jackson, marked the next stage in the career of one of popular music's most unique creators. All three albums (Fegmania, Element of Light, Gotta Let This Hen Out) contain new bonus tracks. In addition to these 3 albums, the set also includes 2 bonus discs which features previously unreleased studio recordings, including the final 1994 sessions, and a CD of unheard live material. Also available as an eight-LP vinyl set. Whoa! Human Highway - Moody Motorcycle (Suicide Squeeze) ................................................................... Human Highway came about while Jim Guthrie and Nick Thorburn (Islands, ex-Unicorns) were on tour with Islands. This duo presents a sound reminiscent of 50s/60s soul and doo-wop (i.e., The Everly Brothers). Jaguar Love - Take Me To the Sea (Matador) ................................................................... Formed from members of the Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves, Portland, OR's Jaguar Love add heavy-duty glam moves and crunchy, addictive hooks to the mix on this debut. The beauty of Jaguar Love is how they manage to compose songs so intentionally vicious, strange, and manic, and yet totally hook-driven. Jesu - Why Are We Not Perfect EP (Hydra Head) ................................................................... On this five track EP, Justin Broadrick has set aside the heavy foundation of pounding guitars prevalent in past recordings and brought to the fore elements of texture and melody. Lykke Li - Youth Novels (Atlantic) ................................................................... Sweden's Lykke Li presents one of the most perfect pop albums you'll hear all year. Just as her music sometimes seems to have arrived from another planet, she's not quite like anyone you've met before. "Imagine The Neptunes remixing 'Joe Le Taxi' as performed by Peter Bjorn & John and you're about a tenth of the way to what Lykke Li's come up with." - NME. Free litho with purchase! Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim (Astralwerks) ................................................................... UK-based songstress Laura Marling has been likened to veteran folksters Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. Despite such hyperbolic accolades, her entry into the crowded world of young female singer-songwriters has been remarkably hushed and wonderfully organic. Having started writing songs at the age of 15, Marling's success has been achieved not by shouting, but by whispering her way through the ranks. Perhaps because of her youth- she turned 18 just before releasing this Alas, I Cannot Swim- Marling has an understated yet accomplished manner that just doesn't grate like some of her peers. The Moondoggies - Don't Be A Stranger (Hardly Art) ................................................................... Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm 3-part harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel, blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique. Mugison - Mugiboogie (Ipecac) ................................................................... Mugison has often been stamped as the Icelandic Beck, but 3 years ago, he traded his laptop in for a rhythm section of flesh and blood, cranked the amp and went on a mission. Mugiboogie is driven by the lust for life, love, and sex - a classic rock n roll ablum in that sense but yet he manages to surprise and entertain in each song. If you dumped blues, power pop, psych rock and heavy metal into a transmogrifying machine, the machine would rumble mysteriously, then spit out a brightly colored block of a hitherto unimagined polymer known as Mugison. Music Tapes - For Clouds and Tornadoes (Merge) ................................................................... This album spotlights Julian Koster's songcraft and distinctive vocals, his almost religious devotion to the singing saw, and numerous contributions from other musicians in the Elephant 6 orbit. As on previous efforts, recording was done using an array of antique hardware, giving the record a timeless, texturally rich sonic palette. Jennifer O'Connor - Here With Me (Matador) ................................................................... Recorded with John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth), "Here With Me" is a breezier, more upbeat work than 2006's "Over The Mountain", but is packed with no less of an emotional wallop. Jennifer's songs have never before sounded this crafted or hit the listener with such immediacy. A rush of everything you ever liked about indie songwriters: substantial songwriting, crystalline vocals, sumptuously simple pop...you have to love an artist who reminds you of everyone but defies comparison" - Time Out New York Lee Scratch Perry - Repentence (Narnack) ................................................................... The legendary Jamaican crazy producer Lee Perry releases his 2008 album Repentance on Californian based label Narnack Records. His latest set is the result of the collaboration between The Upsetter and American rock musican and producer Andrew W.K. Repentance features 12 new tracks, from hip hop to electronic sounds, and includes the debut single 'Pum Pum'. A Perry and Andrew W.K production alongside musicians as Moby, guitarist Chris Stein of Blondie, producer Don Fleming and drummer Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt, with tracks from artists like M.I.A, american rappers of Spank Rock and UK based electronic band Hot Chip. At 72, Perry delivers a new album, full of contemporary music influences, far from his deep roots Black Ark productions. Ra Ra Riot - The Rhumb Line (Barsuk) ................................................................... Last summer, not long after Ra Ra Riot released a promising EP, their drummer, John Ryan Pike, drowned in the ocean after a show in Massachusetts. His death weighs heavily on their excellent full-length debut, much of which he co-wrote. Taking its name from a bar close to Pike's home in Gloucester, Massachusetts, The Rhumb Line abounds with death and water imagery, vividly evoking loss in a seaside town. But if the music is funereal, it's also triumphant: Ra Ra Riot combine Arcade Fire's orchestral reveries with Vampire Weekend's pop sensibility for an album that's both effervescent and heartbreaking. Rodriguez - Cold Fact (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... It's one of the lost classics of the 60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, "jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane". The album is Cold Fact, and what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. It's crushingly good stuff, filled with tales of bad drugs, lost love, and itchy-footed songs about life in late '60s inner-city America. Recommended! The Royal We - s/t (Domino) ................................................................... The Royal We were a Scottish/American fever dream who broke up before this record was released. A mini-LP of eight near perfect imperfections that hit all those great obscurest touchstones in the tweest of pop music...Orange Juice, The Raincoats, The Pastels, Chris Isaak. Xavier Rudd - Dark Shades of Blue (Anti) ................................................................... This record is a balance of darkness and light, thanks in no small part to the studio presence of Joe Barresi, the man behind the sonics of Tool and Queens Of The Stone Age. For years, audiences have swooned and swayed to the dark throb of Rudd's live shows, the pulsing low-end of the Australian didgeridoo, and the biting drone of his slide guitar - now "Dark Shades Of Blue" captures that visceral presence with Rudd's guitar and vocals at their most heavy and psychedelic. Fans of Tool will embrace the new sound, while the fan base Xavier has built touring with Dave Matthews and Ben Harper will be amazed at how the new album captures his live performance. Sonic's Rendezvous Band - Live, Detroit 1978 (Alive) ................................................................... Spawned from the remnants of the MC5, Stooges, Rationals and the Up, Fred "Sonic" Smith (MC5) joined forces with Scott Asheton (Stooges), Scott Morgan (Rationals) and Gary Rasmussen (The Up), to make legendary music that for the most part remained unheard by fans around the world. On a cold January night, the Sonic's Rendezvous Band took the stage opening for the Ramones in the 3,000 plus seat auditorium. "Sounds like a punk Cream, but with a first-rate singer. A must have for Detroit diehards." - Mojo Stereolab - Chemical Chords (4AD) ................................................................... Being released by the iconic legendary label 4AD, Chemical Chords is a collection of purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs, according to Gane, brimming with Motown-like drums, O'Hagan's finest baroque-pop brass and string arrangements and etched with some of Sadier's most eloquent, mellifluous vocal performances to date, it is, nonetheless, classic Stereolab; like all their best work, a perfect equipoise between an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly exotic future. The Stills - Oceans Will Rise (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Oceans Will Rise is the third album by Montreal band The Stills. In late 2007, Toronto, Canada-based record label Arts & Crafts signed the band to a worldwide recording deal. Once again working with producer Gus van Go, The Stills' new material, beginning with the anthemic lead single, "Being Here," conveys a rejuvenated, reinvigorated sense of being. According to vocalist Tim Fletcher, the group felt "a raw energy of inspiration" during the new album's recording efforts that was absent in previous sessions. Toadies - No Deliverance (Kirtland) ................................................................... Toadies have officially reconvened and played a high profile performance at this year's Lollapalooza. Lewis says the band has gone for a bare knuckle sound, amping up the psychotic stomp heard on Rubberneck and Hell Below. The upshot is a taut, exhilarating listen that is quintessentially Toadies. The Uglysuit - s/t (Quarterstick) ................................................................... Oklahoma City's Uglysuit is remarkably fresh-faced and honest; they believe in letting loose, fostering a heartfelt atmosphere of hope and love. Their music is an extended love song to the notion that everything is possible, yet nothing is guaranteed. Look for them on tour supporting Iron And Wine this summer, and on a full US tour upon release. Loudon Wainwright III - Recovery (Yep Roc) ................................................................... For nearly 40 years Loudon has been one of America's most cherished music icons. His legendary wit and satirical genius have expanded his cultural reach from troubadour to silver screen regular. Produced by Joe Henry, the project came about while the two were digging through some of Loudon's older albums. After listening, Loudon and Joe saw that the quality and breadth of the tunes were undiminished and decided to rework the songs a team of studio heavyweights to add color to the previously spare material. A rare document of the changes nearly four decades can bring, Recovery reinterprets songs Loudon first composed and performed in his early 20s. The album follows Loudon's last release, Strange Weirdos, into one of the most unique catalogs in American music history. The Walkmen - You & Me (Gigantic) ................................................................... You & Me is a solid and complex collection of inspired songwriting. Romantic and celebratory, this is the sound of The Walkmen returning to classic form. The music that influenced the Walkmen to compose You & Me follows in a tradition of song writing that traces back to early rock'n'roll: the intimacy and energy of Elvis Presley's and Buddy Holly's early recordings, and the massive voice and orchestration of Roy Orbison. With some romance and drama, You & Me harnesses the immediacy of a live-band into meticulously constructed, unique-sounding rock songs. You & Me would definitely not be mistaken for old, but has an almost immediate ability to evoke a wistful sense of nostalgia in any listener. Wax Poetics - Issue #30, August/September ................................................................... Marking a milestone in Wax Poetics history, Issue 30 is dedicated entirely to the art of rock and roll, the WP way. The Bad Brains cover story charts the enigmatic band's righteous journey through punk rock history. The legendary Elvis Presley gets unique exposure as we shine a light on the legend's return to Memphis, and form. WP of course does a really inspired job of chronicling the sprawling, soul drenched artists it covers here - including Detroit's fiery Dirtbombs, blues rock heroes the Blues Project, the 80s born Black Rock Coalition, 70s Ohio scene combo Iron Knowledge, experimental Latin soul guru Sixto Rodriguez, the unlikely b-boy blueprint architects Babe Ruth, plus Black Merda, The Rascals and many more - plus fond farewells to the great Ike Turner, Bo Diddley, Jimmy McGriff and others. The Wire - Issue #295, September ................................................................... On the cover: Ultra-Red - Mark Fisher talks experimental music and radical politics with the multinational audio activists. Other features include interviews with Trevor Watts, Ghedalia Tazartes, Daniel Johnston and Jad Fair's Invisible Jukebox, Dusk & Blackdown, Aleks Kolkowski, Allora & Calzadilla in Cross Platform, Global Ear from Beijing, Sonic Youth and Brian Eno biographies reviewed in Print Run, Venn Festival, My Bloody Valentine and Sonar reviewed On Location and more. VA - Como Now: The Voices of Panola Co., Mississippi (Daptone) ................................................................... From the folks who brought you Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings...Deep in the heart of Mississippi lies Como, a small rural town where children and grown folks alike have been living and breathing gospel music for as long as they can remember. In July of 2006, Daptone Records placed a small ad in a local paper inviting local singers to come down to Mount Mariah Church to record their songs. The result is "Como Now," a stirring collection of traditional and original gospel from the voices of Como's own families. VA - Kompakt Total 9 (Kompakt) ................................................................... Fifteen years ago, Kompakt came together as a partnership between techno musicians Michael Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt (aka Gas), Jurgen Paape, and Reinhard Voigt initially as a record shop that today boasts pretty much every service a musician could ever dream of. From their in-house record labels (Kompakt, K2, etc), record shop, distribution hub for 50+ worldwide labels, recording studios, booking & management agency and so much more, Kompakt strives to keep to its DIY roots by putting music first - something that is most certainly reflected on this double platter of joyfulness called Total 9. Includes dynamic duo Supermayer, The Modernist, Wolfgang Voigt, Thomas Fehlmann, Jurgen Paape, DJ Koze, Justus Kohncke, Kaito, Matias Aguayo, Partial Arts, Gui Boratto, Superpitcher, Congosound, Alison Degbe, Dubshape, Jonas Bering, Robert Babicz, Nightguy, Rice Twins, Nicolas Stefan, Scsi-9, and Maxime Dangles. I was taken aback to hear such a raw rock album on Tomlab, a label known for its more experimental/electronic artists. It sounds like it should be on In The Red. Hailing from San Francisco, Thee Oh Sees have seemingly appeared out of thin air to unleash a total garage-stomp-psych masterpiece on the unsuspecting public. After making your way through the record's foggy layers of spring reverb and disorienting echos, you could easily imagine the band itself materializing out of nowhere and then vanishing again in a puff of smoke. It's not all a smokey haze, though. Raw garage grooves abound, chocked full of punishing beats and beautifully raw, insistently slashing Syd-esque guitar lines that grab you by the throat and never let go. Dual boy-girl megaphone vocals deliver irresistable melodies time and time again, not even giving you a chance to sit back and realize how great the last one was. Truly all killer no filler, this one deserves your full attention. - Cyrus ------------------------------------------------------------------ More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
