No fuss, no muss... just a TON of great new releases! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 9/23/2008 (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) ................................................................... Blitzen Trapper - Furr (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Furr is the fourth record by Portland's Blitzen Trapper and the follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation. Recorded mostly in a hoary old telegraph building close by the Willamette River, the new record refines and expands on the far-ranging yet distinctive songcraft that lies at the heart of their unique appeal. One key to this new material was an ancient, warped piano that appeared in the hallway one day and which was subsequently muscled into the group's studio. Though out of tune and missing teeth, this piano became the warhorse upon which Earley wrote and recorded much of Furr. Brightblack Morning Light - Motion to Rejoin (Matador) ................................................................... Haunting, beautiful, and weird in equal doses, Brightblack's second album for Matador was recorded entirely under solar power. Deeper and heftier than their much loved 2006 self-titled LP, this record recalls musicians as diverse as Lee Perry, Bob Dylan, My Bloody Valentine, Neil Young, and Otis Redding, with sounds ranging from folk to gospel to experimental electronics. "Ethereal, lovely...a narcotic, blues-infused sound" - Rolling Stone Cold War Kids - Loyalty to Loyalty (Downtown) ................................................................... Cold War Kids means International Blues. They began in August '04 with friends, jangly guitar, hand claps, and a Harmony amp in a storage room atop Mulberry Street restaurant in downtown Fullerton, CA. For the first practices, having instruments was secondary to stomping and chanting; Clanging on heat pipes, thumping on plywood walls. Hollering into tape recorders. Slipping and swaying into alleyways and juke joints of yesteryear. Tapping in to the American dustbowl and British maritime. On the restaurant's roof the sound and feeling was cultivated and burned, built and hallowed out, painted and stripped to the primer. Danielson Famile - [LP reissues] (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... An epic journey of retrospection begins with the vinyl reissues of Tell Another Joke At The Ol' Choppin' Block and Fetch The Compass Kids and Tri-Danielson. In addition to being back in print for the first time since 2001, these reissues have some unique attributes such as: Choppin' Block is now available as a 2x12" LP format (as opposed to the 2x10" format in which it debuted) and includes 4 bonus songs from a live WFMU session. Tri Danielson has been partially remixed and fully remastered and makes its vinyl return dressed up in a brilliant new gatefold jacket along with a very special bonus track. Dr Dooom - Dr Dooom 2 (Threshold) ................................................................... After single-handedly redefining "warped" as the mind and mouth behind the Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC's, "Kool" Keith Thornton, aka Rhythm X, aka Dr. Octagon, aka Dr. Dooom, headed for the outer reaches of the stratosphere with a variety of solo projects. A onetime psychiatric patient at Bellevue, Keith's lyrical thematics remained as free-flowing here as they ever were with the N.Y. trio, connecting up complex meters with fierce, layers-deep metaphors and veiled criticisms of those who "water down the sound that comes from the ghetto." Produced by KutMasta Kurt. Friendly Fires - s/t (XL) ................................................................... One of the most exciting bands from the UK. Last year's super limited 7-inch "Paris" was judged the single of the week in both the NME and The Guardian for its deft combination of clattering percussion and a blissed out, hum along hook. Other songs on this release contain driving punk funk grooves with unstoppable pop melodies, joyous vocals, wonky waltz-like rhythms, and My Bloody Valentine atmospherics. It's all the more impressive when you consider the band recorded this entirely themselves on a laptop. David Gilmour - Live in Gdansk (Sony) ................................................................... Two CD full live concert David played at the Gdansk, Poland shipyards in commemoration of the Solidarity Movement. Includes Pink Floyd favorites "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Breathe." Also available in 2CD+DVD, 2CD+2DVD, and 5LP versions for special order. Free bonus CD with a live version of Wot's Uh the Deal with purchase! High Places - s/t (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... The debut full-length following a series of sold out 7-inch singles and the "03/07 - 09/07" CD which compiled said singles and all the band's early material. Their signature sound comes from bass-heavy, yet crisp beats, lilting vocal melodies, syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of household objects. Both CD and LP are presented in old-style tip-on gatefold jackets. Howling Hex - Earth Junk (Drag City) ................................................................... The sixth new version of Neil Michael Hagerty's (Royal Trux) Howling Hex. Recorded in the late winter of early 2008, Earth Junk is a ramble in the dappled sunlight of the American Southwest, twisted metallic folk-art in the ever-changing breeze, an offering to all nations. Throw Earth Junk in your sound trunk and keep on rolling. The Howling Hex will be there to greet you whenever-and wherever-you arrive. I Heart Lung - Interoceans (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... Carefully composed, meticulously recorded pieces rooted in improvisation, revised, and augmented over time. Presented as a set of four long-form drone-based compositions, "Interoceans" hints both at the sonic palette and renegade spirit of ECM Records alumnus Steve Tibbitts and Ralph Towner and the measured studio edge of Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock". While influenced by Fripp & Eno, Miles Davis, and Terry Riley, I Heart Lung possess a healthy balance between tradition and the respectful corruption thereof. The group has toured with Castanets, Wooden Wand, and The Vanishing Voice. Kings of Leon - Only by the Night (RCA) ................................................................... Kings of Leon return with the release of their highly anticipated fourth album 'Only By The Night' on 22nd September through Columbia Records. 'Only By The Night' is a bold and expansive sonic statement that looks set to solidify Kings of Leon's position as one of the most important international acts of 2008 and beyond. It follows rapidly in the footsteps of the bands previous albums 'Youth And Young Manhood', 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' & 'Because Of The Times', which have quickly established them as one of the most prolific and acclaimed acts around. FREE bonus 7inch! Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue (Reprise) ................................................................... Femme fatale Jenny Lewis has never sounded so passionate and her songs never so hard-hitting and acerbic as on her aptly titled solo disk, Acid Tongue. The album follows 2006's Rabbit Fur Coat and a series of acclaimed albums with indie rock fave Rilo Kiley. Featuring collaborations from She & Him (M. Ward) and guest appearances by Elvis Costello and Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Acid Tongue proves to be wicked good. Marmoset - Record in Red [LP version] (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Originally released on CD in 2001, this epic and eerily-addictive album is revered as a dark pop classic of the Midwest underground. The music sounds like it comes from a short, golden moment when the 70s bled into the 80s and from that place where melody and tone collude to seduce a truth from the darkside of the Midwestern urban experience. It is a hazy and brutal reality that evokes the strangest of nostalgias. The vocals and melodies are delicate, restrained, strange and somehow dissociative. The final effect is nothing short of a poignantly psychotropic Velvet Underground-esque journey on a seriously heavy dosage of painkillers. Its about time! Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling (Matador) ................................................................... Mogwai's sixth album continues to showcase the fiercely layered guitars and dynamics of their classic work, and features a new array of rhythms and melodies. These hint more than ever before at their electronic and metal influences. Not only do they remain masters of the eloquently stretched guitar phrase, but they've also expanded the syntax to include a new, almost beat-driven sound. Monkey - Journey to the West (XL) ................................................................... Monkey: Journey to the West is a theatrical collaboration between Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz, Good Bad & the Queen), Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz designs, costumes) and Chinese opera specialist Chen Shi-Zheng. The show itself is an explosive 90-minute circus featuring Chinese acrobats, martial arts experts and contortionists, though the album condenses the experience into 22 songs lasting an hour or so. Recorded with a mix of European and Chinese musicians, Monkey is a genuine attempt at East-West fusion. Featuring a dizzying array of instrumentation - it's the sort of project that could so easily have gone awry. Yet Albarn, who allegedly mastered the Chinese pentatonic scale, seems to have made it work. Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Pusher (Nettwerk) ................................................................... OCMS can attribute much of their success to their relentless touring schedule. Between headlining shows and countless festivals (Bonnaroo, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival, etc), the band lives on the road - they thrive on the communal experience of the live shows. OCMS have made a name for themselves as energetic performers with an unbridled spirit. As musicians, songwriters and singers, they are the smartest and finest purveyors of American music to come down the pike in decades. Grab them new album and catch them live here in Bloomington at the Bluebird on October 16th. Pica Beats - Beating Back the Claws of the Cold (Hardly Art) ................................................................... This record packs a wallop and displays the group's ability to bend and blend all manner of genre. The hyper-literate storytelling conveys an otherworldly elegance, weaving effortlessly with the record's sonic spectrum. The sum of the parts is a poised, polished, and nimble collection of subtle indie pop. Pidgeon - Might as Well Go Eat Worms (Absolutely Kosher) ................................................................... San Francisco's five-piece wrecking crew of pop and noise are impossible to categorize. A three guitar assault boosts and buries pop hooks with swirling noise and power riffs. They blend off-kilter pop vocals (a la Blonde Redhead) with intense and ferocious screaming (a la Rudimentary Peni or black metal). RIYL: The Cardigans meet Motorhead, The Pixies. "8.0 - an excellent marriage of boy/girl singing, shredded screaming, indie-pop, and blistering thrashcore" - Pitchfork The Replacements - [deluxe reissues pt. 2] (Rhino) ................................................................... The 2008 remastered and expanded editions with bonus tracks of The Replacements' 1985-1990 output; Tim, Pleased to Meet Me, Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down. Each album contains a plethora of bonus tracks, including many previously unreleased songs, demos, alternate versions and more. Max Richter - 24 Postcards in Full Colour (Fat Cat) ................................................................... With his 4th album, Berlin-based Richter further cements his status as one of the leading lights of modern composition. Each of the 24 tracks is a classically composed ringtone, an evocative miniature whose theme, though fully developed, hints at a larger piece; thus Richter explores the fugitive nature of memory through reprises and repetition throughout this intriguing album. With a sonic palette consisting of string quintet, solo piano, 16-track 2-inch tape, transistors, found shortwave radio, vinyl clicks, dust, scratches and rumble, and acoustic guitars, Richter's latest effort is both beautifully detailed and sonically rich. Silver Jews - Silver Jew DVD (Drag City) ................................................................... If you're wearing out your copy of Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea and you can't make it to Indianapolis for their forthcoming US tour, we've got something for you. It's a documentary of a very special time David Berman and the gang spent in Israel back in 2006 when they were exploring the world as a band for the very first time ever! This brought them in front of a lot of loving crowds in a lot of far-flung places around the map, but the few days spent in Israel turned out to be very profound for the band half-named after the inhabitants of that venerable old nation Ñ born-again Jew David Berman in particular. Sing it Loud - Come Around (Epitaph) ................................................................... Produced by Motion City Soundtrack guitarist Josh Cain and mixed by Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182), "Come Around" combines bright catchy melodies, buzzing synths, and rocking riffs for one of the year's most vibrant power-pop albums. Tackling the timeless subject of young love and heartache with a playful attitude that makes even the worst teenage dramas seem doable, Sing It Loud have crafted 11 non-stop, head-bopping songs. Guest vocal appearances by Alex (All Time Low) and Justin (Motion City Soundtrack). Thievery Corporation - Radio Retaliation (ESL) ................................................................... With Radio Retaliation Thievery Corporation raise the bar with a new cast of musical collaborators including; Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC's own go-go originator Chuck Brown. Also returning are long time co-conspirators Sleepy Wonder, LouLou, Notch, Zee, and Verny Varela. TV on the Radio - Dear Science, (Interscope) ................................................................... Produced by the group's multi-instrumentalist Dave Sitek, Dear Science finds Brooklyn group TV on the Radio fine-tuning what they did best on 2006's Return to Cookie Mountain: tweaking and looping and distorting a grand arsenal of aggressive percussion, new wave synths, epic guitar noise and various kitchen-sink devices, then layering them all into a big, beautiful art-rock symphony.
