NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/14/2008 (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) ................................................................... Julian Cope - Black Sheep (Head Heritage) ................................................................... British singer, songwriter and one-time Teardrop Explodes leader. Black Sheep is a musical exploration of what it is to be an outsider in modern Western Culture. Across 11 songs and one epic poem, Cope examines the idea of social outcasts and how they - through their sheer obstinacy and strength of personality - carve a path for themselves in the normal world, often changing society's own concepts of normality in the process. Cope attributes his personal descent into outsider-dom to his 9th birthday on which 116 children his own age died in the infamous Aberfan Disaster. The 11 songs here reveal Cope at a pinnacle of songwriting and feature sumptuous lashings of orchestral Mellotron, orchestral percussion and marching bass drums, plus oboe, wah guitar, rumbling synthesizers and gorgeous harmony vocals. Crooked Fingers - Forfeit / Fortune (Constant) ................................................................... Forfeit / Fortune features the fullest and most eclectic orchestration on a Crooked Fingers release to date, kicking off with the horn-heavy What Never Comes, and the drum machine-based Luisa's Bones. Whereas Dignity & Shame was recorded entirely live, Forfeit / Fortune was a more piecemeal affair, with Eric Bachmann enlisting an all-star cast of players to perform on the record, with the cast depending on the city they were in. Brian Kotzur (Silver Jews) lent his to the project in Nashville, while Tom Hagerman (Devotchka) laid down string parts in Denver. Frequent Crooked Fingers touring mate Neko Case sang the brilliant album-closing duet with Bachmann in Tucson. The Dead C - Secret Earth EP (Ba Da Bing) ................................................................... The elegance of howling guitar noise was fully realized when The Dead C appeared. For 20+ years now, the trio has continually redefined what rock music is and can sound like, and have inspired Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Wolf Eyes, and Comets On Fire, not to mention the current fertile underground noise scene. The Dead C is the ultimate Blues band. But rather than departing from the heartfelt singing of the African-American South, they express the tenants of alienation in society with unrelenting force, a focused soundtrack to accompany Knut Hamsun novels, Samuel Beckett plays, and Ingmar Bergman films. Michael Morley's monotonic vocal moan anchors the inherent isolation of our modern world. Gentleman Caller - vs. The Elephant (MFT) ................................................................... Bloomington's own! With a croon that breaks hearts and a poet's pen, Kenny Childers guides his quirky cohorts through his most skillful set of songs to date. Gentleman Caller picks up where 2006's Until We Are Missing (Affirmation Records) left off. The epic stories and brutal truths hide in plain sight among some of the catchiest music being created today. Musically, the band seems to channel the intertwined spirits of The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Plastic Ono Band, The Kinks and John Prine. Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs - Dirt Don't Hurt (Transdreamer) ................................................................... Holly Golightly, mostly recognized from her work as part of Thee Headcoatees, the all-girl garage band known well around London for their blend of girl group sounds and three-chord garage-rock returns with all the original songs coming from the pen of Billy Childish, Miss Golightly's first inspiration and mentor. Since her initial entrance into the world of Music in the 1990s, Holly has released 12 LPs and over fifteen singles for a wide variety of labels. Additionally, she has appeared on multiple collaborative albums and tracks, including the White Stripes "It's True That We Love One Another" from their platinum selling Elephant. I'm From Barcelona - Who Killed Harry Houdini? (Mute) ................................................................... The year is 2007, Waiting at Heathrow Airport Emanuel Lundgren wishes that his fear of flying could disappear. He enters a book shop and his eyes fall upon "The Secret Life of Harry Houdini". The book about the famous escapologist makes Emanuel remember his own failed career as a hobby magician. Inspired by Houdini he decides to try the daring act to get locked inside the studio and ask someone in the audience to throw away the keys. The questions, as always, outnumber the answers when trying to find out who killed Harry Houdini. But Emanuel is pretty sure we can find the answer somewhere among the songs on the album. Stephen John Kalinich - A World of Peace Must Come (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... A truly lost chapter in the career of Brian Wilson - an album produced by the famous Beach Boy for poet Stephen John Kalinich, done with a bit of music and vocals by Wilson as well! The record is spare, thoughtful poetry - often recorded with slight production touches that make the vocals sound nicely weird - and occasional bits of music or other Wilson-like touches, but all in ways that are quite different from any Beach Boys work. Kalinich's words had an impact on the Friends album by the Beach Boys, but the feel here is a lot darker - and at the few points when Brian's background vocals come into play, it creates a great sense of contrast that hints at the darker corners of the late 60s world of pop in SoCal. Ray Lamontagne - Gossip in the Grain (RCA) ................................................................... Lauded singer/songwriter, Ray LaMontagne is set to release his much-anticipated third album, Gossip in the Grain. Recorded with returning producer, Ethan Johns in Box, England, and touching upon a range of styles and musical settings- spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry - Gossip in the Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date. Manchester Orchestra - Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind EP+DVD (Canvasback) ................................................................... This EP/DVD combo will feature the never before released "What's Left Behind" documentary film directed by Sam Erickson of 44 Pictures, three live tracks, and two brand new songs. Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind continues the band's progression and signature sound that was lauded on the 2006 debut album I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child; powerful melodies synched with poignant lyrics. The short-form documentary was filmed and edited by Erickson and explores the close bond between the band members on tour and highlights the constant themes of life, happiness, religion and death; threads that are echoed throughout the music and lyrics that make up the fabric of Manchester Orchestra. Menahan Street Band - Make the Road by Walking (Daptone / Dunham) ................................................................... The Menahan Street Band is a collaboration of musicians from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, and the Budos Band brought together by Thomas Brenneck to record hits in the bedroom of his Menahan St. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. With influences reaching beyond the funk/soul/afrobeat architecture of their other projects into the more ethereal realms of Curtis Mayfield and Mulatu Astatke, the Menahan Street Band creates a unique new instrumental soul sound that is as raw as it is lush. Their debut album will be released on Dunham Records, Brenneck's new imprint of Daptone Records. An original, personal, and uncompromised creation that embodies the sound of a select group of musicians in one distinct place, at one particular moment in time. "In a way, we're simply the street's unofficial house band." The Mighty Underdogs - Droppin Science Fiction (Definitive Jux) ................................................................... The newly formed trio of hip-hop heavy weights from the West Coast - Blackalicious's Gift of Gab, fellow Quannum compatriot Lateef the Truth Speaker and Bay Area producer Headnodic - release their debut collaboration, Dropping Science Fiction, on the other coast's Definitive Jux. Backed by a dizzying set of collaborators that include DJ Shadow, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, The Alkoholiks' Tash, Jurassic 5's Chali 2na, Julian and Damian "JR Gong" Marley, The Mighty Underdogs tour through worlds and soundscapes that blur all settings. Secret Machines - s/t (TSM) ................................................................... Secret Machines' main attraction is the more muscular sound, and how it complements the themes. The record is a logical creative step for The Secret Machines; it builds upon the foundation established with their previous albums, showing The Secret Machines have solidified as a band, even in metamorphosis. It's a nod ahead of, yet not a departure from, the psychedelic rock that has helped make the Dallas-bred NYC transplants a fan and critical darling in the U.S. and Europe. Going forward, the band sees nothing but open skies. Suicide / Bruce Springsteen / Beat the Devil (Blast First) ................................................................... This is the first in Blast First's year-long series of monthly(ish) limited edition 10" vinyl EPs celebrating the 70th birthday of Suicide's Alan Vega. The first track is "The Boss" himself Bruce Springsteen doing a cover of "Dream Baby Dream," live from his 2005 Devils & Dust Tour - exclusively available here. Totally haunting and unexpected! The flipside features Suicide performing that song on the Midnight Special live TV show in 1978 - recently recovered from a lost Suicide vault and previously unreleased - as well as a ripping cover of "Mr. Ray" by now-defunct contemporary NYC band, Beat The Devil. Subsequent editions in this series will include tributes by artists such as The Horrors, Peaches, Primal Scream, SUNN O)))/Pansonic, Lydia Lunch, The Klaxons, Julian Cope, Liars, Spiritualised, and Grinderman. Tobacco - F*cked Up Friends (Anticon) ................................................................... Solo debut from the main constituent behind Black Moth Super Rainbow. Features vocals from Aesop Rock. Early version of Fucked Up Friends' audio was featured on Tobacco's limited DVD collaboration with visual artist Beta Carnage. Follows up Black Moth Super Rainbow's 2007 smash hit, Dandelion Gum. On his first solo album, Tobacco explores a darker, starker, and altogether more badass dimension of his complex vision. With his group, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tobacco distinguishes himself as a master of jagged beats, glowing melodies, and pronounced tension. This time, he works alone, in rural Pennsylvania, away from conventions and interference. Lucinda Williams - Little Honey (Lost Highway) ................................................................... Lucinda Williams has always been adept at painting landscapes of the soul, illuminating the spirit's shadowy nooks and shimmering crannies - but she's never captured the sun breaking through the clouds as purely as on her new Lost Highway release, Little Honey. The album features a duet with Elvis Costello "Jailhouse Tears" Other guest vocalists include Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs, Jim Lauderdale, Tim Easton and Charlie Louvin. VA - 1970's Algerian Proto-Rai Underground LP (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... In the early 70s, a new group of singers and musicians were operating on the northwest coast of Africa, and what they pioneered was a sound that eventually reached worldwide status by the end of the decade. Due to censorship and government control, this scene and lyrical style was forced underground and banned from broadcasts, yet slowly built a small following around the seaside cabarets. This compilation is a selection of this proto-Rai scene's vinyl 45s. This LP is limited to a one-time pressing on 180g vinyl and comes in a full-color gatefold jacket with photos of the musicians and informative liner notes by the man who compiled it, Hicham Chadly.
