As we hesitantly head towards winter, there are still many things to look forward to, even in the cold. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - Saturday, December 6th @ Jake's - get your tickets from Landlocked ($20) and we will reward you with $2 off ANY Daptone CD or LP. This is a show you CAN NOT miss - now that the Godfather has passed, Sharon and her group might be the best of the next generation to pick up the torch and bring that classic soul/funk sound to the people. An amazing live act. Look 'em up on myspace, youtube, wherever and become a believer. What else? Well, all these fine new releases, of course... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/18/2008 (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) ................................................................... Anathallo - Canopy Glow (Anticon) ................................................................... Among lush pile-ups of Pet Sounds harmony and Sung Tongs texture, Anathallo's Matt Joynt and Erica Froman sing to the rafters: We saw the sky, swarming full with the light that the fireflies made / An accidental constellation / You, how will you go? Out through your mouth in a sigh? / Into a space we don't know. It's a surprisingly beautiful rendering of life's most feared result: calm and considered, yet wide-eyed in approach, and colored by kaleidoscopic detail. Canopy Glow, Anathallo's second full-length (and first for Anticon), could be described just the same. Belle & Sebastian - The BBC Sessions (Matador) ................................................................... Fourteen gorgeous tracks recorded for the BBC between 1996 and 2001. At the time, the group rarely performed live, so all these songs are noticeably different from the studio versions. The regular CD includes an additional four unreleased songs from their classic early Jeepster period. The limited, deluxe double CD contains an entire live show broadcast on BBC Evening Session in mid-2001 with another four never before heard songs. Gatefold 180 gram LP. The Black Keys - Live at Crystal Ballroom DVD (Nonesuch) ................................................................... The Black Keys' new concert DVD reflects the no-frills genius of the drums-and-guitar duo's studio sound: It's a refreshingly straightforward, beautifully rendered, high-definition video document of their April 4, 2008 sold-out gig at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom, featuring seventeen songs culled from all five of the pair's albums. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Sunday at Devil Dirt (Fontana) ................................................................... Sunday at Devil Dirt is 2nd full-length collaboration between the former Belle & Sebastian member (Campbell) and Mark Lanegan, the Screaming Trees frontman and part-time QOTSA vocalist. Recorded between studios in the Catskills and Isobel's native Glasgow, Sunday At Devil Dirt is an album of dust bitten ballads and troubled wanderings, easily the equal of its predecessor. Again, Campbell and Lanegan complement each other beautifully, like silk on cracked leather. While continuing to mine the same rich seam of Alt-Country, Folk and Blues of their debut, the new record also embraces a dusty southern gothic, while a sultry, jazzy feel is evident on a number of tracks. Cardiff Giant - Bled White (self) ................................................................... Bled White, the second album from the Bloomington / Indy / Louisville trio Cardiff Giant is a collection of unique compositions highlighted by warm cello sounds, post-rock dynamics and alt-folk intimacy. Traces of regret, guilt and misplaced nostalgia pervade the lyrics, but the music offers a warmth and optimism that the words leave out. These ten songs, recorded and mixed by Bloomington's own Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording, are unmistakably comfortable; not a retreat from tension but a reconciliation and acceptance. Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid - NYC (Domino) ................................................................... Kieren Hebden (Four Tet) and Steve Reid (Steve Reid Ensemble) return with their impressionistic take on their NYC surroundings. It fuses the digital slash-and-staple of sampling and the irresistible momentum of jazz drumming, all without ever forgetting the dance floor. The whole set, down to the choice of tracks and their sequencing, was influenced by NYC's infamous energies. Ladyhawke - s/t (Modular) ................................................................... Ladyhawke (AKA New Zealand girl Pip Brown) was raised in the 80s with a musical family and grew up listening to the likes of Stevie Nicks, Deep Purple and Joan Jett. Beginning as the drummer in a school band, Pip plays 4 different instruments on her debut album. She moved to Sydney a few years back and then moved to London in 2007 where she wrote and recorded the album. Pip wrote, arranged and plays on all the songs on the album working alongside several guest producers. 'Magic', 'Another Runway', 'My Delirium', 'Morning Dreams' and 'Dusk Till Dawn' were produced with her chief collaborator, world-renowned producer Pascal Gabriel. Love is All - Hundred Things Keep Me (What's Your Rupture?) ................................................................... Sax-blasted garage-disco. From seemingly out of nowhere, Love is All turned up everywhere after their release of Nine Times That Same Song and then, impossibly, disappeared to the fate of hype, broken promises and seething expectations. A full 3 years later, the fanciful-anachro-charm of Sweden's Love Is All has matured with the marriage of several members, kids and a true appreciate that love is all. The new album harnesses the same raw energy and music which captured our hearts, but this time magnifies it through the complex emotions and experiences the band has struggled with. Years in the works, it is a record about excitement, frustration, regret, disappointment and figuring out what's important in finding the relief of the morning's light at the end of a bad nights sleep. Mystery Girls - Incontinopia (In the Red) ................................................................... Green Bay, Wisconsin's Mystery Girls were mere teenagers when they started out. Now in their early/mid-20s, the boys (er, Girls) have delivered their most cohesive work yet on their third album, Incontinopia. It's unclear what Incontinopia means but it's a good bet that copious amounts of marijuana smoke were involved in choosing it. Arthur Russell - Wild Combination DVD (Plexifilm) ................................................................... This is director Matt Wolf's portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Arthur prolifically created music that spanned both pop and abstract art. Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Arthur's family, friends, and collaborators, including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg, to tell this poignant story. 65 minutes of extras include rare archival footage of 2 performances, Allen Ginsberg's Memorial, a 1970 recording of an audicassette letter sent from Arthur in San Francisco to this parents, as well as tribute performances of Russell's songs by Jens Lekman, Verity Susman from Electrelane, Joel Gibb from Hidden Cameras, and Arthur's Landing (featuring members of Modern Lovers, Joyce Bowden and Steven Hall). Max Tundra - Parallax Error Beheads You (Domino) ................................................................... His third record is a masterpiece of micro-melodies and sound bytes; a triumph of slicing, dicing, and editing. An intricate mosaic of sounds and styles recognizable from the last thirty years of pop, rock, prog, disco, funk, techno, rap, metal, and soul, but many of which are completely new, either by Max recombining genres or by inventing an original one. One song can sometimes sound like seven different bands from totally different worlds playing at once. Just call it cosmic glitch-pop R&B.
