As we wind down 2008, here is a final collection of new music to peruse. We've highlighted hundreds of titles this year - and now it is time to put the finishing touches on the year in music. We will publish our personal results and holiday hours next tuesday, so for now, bundle up and finish off any gift buying you have left. If you have any last minute special orders, please get them to us NOW! Come say hello... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 12/16/2008 (Exact arrival dependent on shipping delays and mishaps, sorry) ................................................................... The Decemberists - Always the Bridesmaid Vols. 1-3 12" (Jealous Butcher) ................................................................... All three volumes of the Decemberist's vinyl only EPs. This 'singles series' is aptly titled "Always the Bridesmaid" and will prominently feature songs that the Decemberists really loved but presciently felt they would not fit on the band's forthcoming LP. Colored vinyl, 180g audiophile vinyl, deluxe packaging throughout! You can only get it at Landlocked! Glass Candy - Deep Gems (Italians Do It Better) ................................................................... Glass Candy just released this new rarities collection as a surprise for a party in Portland. It's called Deep Gems and here's what the label had to say about it: "Also at the party we will be giving away a new Glass Candy CD called Deep Gems, which is a collection of singles, b-sides, and rarities". In between touring like crazy, glass candy has been in the studio. Nobunny - Love Visions CD/LP (1234 Go!) ................................................................... Like a pop machine spewing out a small rivulet of hits, he is not necessarily onto something completely new. Both GG Allin, and The Ramones were touching on the same fizzy button years ago, and the formula of bubblegum fuzz is one oldest socks in the sack, but either way it's good to see it's back. Nobunny's ability to deliver blithesome songs with a maddened and frothy smile is simply brilliant. His bouncy and rollicking style conjures images of dirty bubbles rising over a landscape of unkempt, and insanely catchy hooks that will have the stuffiest of the arm folding camp dancing and acting like idiots within the first couple of chords. Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Cotonou - The Vodoun Effect CD (Analog Africa) ................................................................... Following the highly-acclaimed African Scream Contest: Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds from Benin & Togo '70s - which featured tracks by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. During several trips to Benin, Analog Africa label-head Samy Ben Redjeb managed to collect roughly 500 songs by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Cotonou recorded between 1970 and 1983. With so much material to choose from, he decided to split it into 2 volumes. Vol 2 will be material the band recorded under a contract with the label Albarika Store, but the band also "secretly" recorded with an array of smaller labels based around Cotonou, Benin's largest city, and the capital city of Porto Novo. It is those tracks (all officially licensed) that are presented here on Vol 1. Packaged in a super deluxe slipcase, with a large 44-page illustrated booklet. Scott and Simon's Christmas Album (self) ................................................................... From the bowels of the frontmen of Kentucky Nightmare and Medusa comes a union of unexpected rewards: a holiday album that is as rocking as it is hilarious. Featuring ten seasonal classics to warm your nights while you uhhh roast your nuts on an open fire? Three different CD cover art choices! Eggnog recommended. Wow. Soy Un Caballo - Heures De Raison (Minty Fresh) ................................................................... The duo Soy Un Caballo (Spanish for "I am a horse") features Bonnie Prince Billy (Will Oldham) and Sean O'Hagan (High Llamas). They write and perform songs of exquisite fragility. "Delicate, wispy melodies vie with choral refrains...smooth as silk, cool as a cucumber and light as a feather" Submarine Races - Hard To Look At, Easy To See LP+CD (In the Red) ................................................................... This Submarine Races is a three-piece from Chicago, Illinois, fronted by Ian Adams, formerly of The Ponys and Happy Supply. The Submarine Races play spiky art pop that displays Adams's love for literate UK post-punk as well as the simple but sublime songs of The Easybeats and '60s girl groups. The group is powered by Adams's serpentine melodies, 12-string Rickenbacker leads, and adenoidal vocals, which blend the elegantly wasted plaints of the Only Ones' Peter Perrett and the nervy quaver of the Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano. Wax Poetics - Issue #32: December/January ................................................................... Issue 32 offers a rare and insightful look at funk visionary Sylvester Stewart, better known as Sly Stone. We also follow reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff through a long and textured career which spanned five decades and encompassed several milestones in the music and movie mediums. Also Ahmad Jamal, Jean Grae, Large Professor, Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince, South Korean B-Boys, Randy's Records and much much more, as always. VA - Keep On Struttin' (Le Smoke Disques) ................................................................... Imitations, Interpolations And The Inspiration Of The Meters. An international collection of acts covering The Meters' catalog including Syd Jones And The Gay Troubadours, King Herbert And The Knights, Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band, Billy Ball And The Upsetters, Ebony Rhythm Band, The Invaders, Los Masters and many others.
