A slow week for new releases, and a good week to catch up! Bring in those gift cards that are slowly gathering dust from those stores you dare not shop at and let us do the dirty work while you enjoy great new music! Stop in and ask us about the gift-card exchange. What else? We are close to finalizing a live date for Jason's #1 Album of 2008 - Gentleman Jesse and His Men at Bear's Place on Wednesday January 28th - he is on tour with The Paul Collins Beat - as in Paul Collins from the Nerves - the same Nerves that wrote "Hangin' on the Telephone" (made huge by Blondie) - Paul Collins also had his own power-pop band called the Beat in the late 70s. Wow. A Helluva show! 1/28/09 - $8 - Bear's Place. ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 1/13/2009 ................................................................... Bee Gees - Odessa [3CD deluxe reissue] (Rhino) ................................................................... Three-CD expanded edition of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb's 1969 double-LP pop masterpiece, presented in deluxe packaging that reproduces the original release's red-flocked cover, including a poster and sticker. Disc 1 features the original stereo mixes of the 17 song sequence. Disc 2 sports the original mono mixes of the same 17 songs. Bonus disc 3 boasts 22 previously unreleased recordings, including 20 alternate takes and demos plus two songs not featured on the original album - 'Pity' and 'Nobody's Someone.' Late of the Pier - Fantasy Black Channel (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Nottingham's Late Of The Pier are ready to unleash their genre-busting debut album on the US. At once darkly chaotic and unabashedly pop, Late Of The Pier's music is almost impossible to describe, pushing stylistic boundaries to the edge of no control. Produced by superstar DJ-producer Erol Alkan, Fantasy Black Channel is huge in both scope and ambition, an exuberant rush of glam, psychedelia, nu-wave, dancepunk, metal and madcap sci-fi experimentation. Not every band can throw shards of Zappa, Queen, Eno-era Roxy Music, Prince, Gary Numan, DFA, Bloc Party and The Klaxons into a blender and come out with something as defiantly unique and grandly anthemic. Love - Live at Whisky a Go-Go 1978 (Friday) ................................................................... Love were the one of the most important bands of the 1960's. As a house band at the Whisky A Go- Go in the 60's, Arthur Lee and Co. developed one of the best live shows and a catalogue of music which is legendary. In late 1978, Lee & Bryan Maclean toured one last time, and this is the official last recording of that era. Although the bootleg quality of the recording has been enhanced from the original master tapes, it is nevertheless a very important document of this last historic tour and recording from the two founders of Love, and comes expanded with the bonus recordings of 'My Little Red Book' & 'Orange Skies'. Murder by Death / William Elliott Whitmore split 7" (self) ................................................................... Murder By Death are releasing the first of 7 records in a 7" series where they trade covering songs with other bands they know. The first 7" will feature MBD performing William Elliott Whitmore's "One Man's Shame" and WEW covering Murder By Death's "Dynamite Mine". Future editions will feature O'Death, Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) and well, more! We also have restocks of all their other LPs! Most on colored vinyl and/or with bonus 7"s and/or extravagent packaging! Franz Nicolay - Major General (Fistolo) ................................................................... Surely you know Franz Nicolay as the mustachioed melody-maker tickling the ivories and making funny faces with his drinking buddies in the Hold Steady. But Franz contains exponentially more rock than just one band can contain. In addition to his work with the World/Inferno Friendship Society, Franz is also a one man show in his own right. The 13-track set finds Nicolay joined by Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, former World/Inferno member Yula Be'eri, and Jared Scott of Demander. Patti Smith - Dream of Life DVD (Palm) ................................................................... Eleven years in the making, Dream of Life is a unique and intimate portrait of the renowned singer, songwriter, poet, and activist. The film traces Patti Smith's punk-poet roots through the trials of daily life and untimely deaths that have formed her life and art. Smith narrates the film touching on her early days in New York City, the people dearest to her (late husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Mapplethorpe, and others), her family, and the political causes she champions. Through beautiful cinematography (both black & white and color), Sebring captures the essential nature of this vital and relevant American artist. Wicked Witch - Chaos: 1978-86 LP (EM) ................................................................... First-time ever reissue of rare evil psycho machine-funk from 80s Washington, DC. Combining elements from alchemical mentors Parliament Funkadelic, Sun Ra, ESG, Run DMC, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix to cast a crazed spell on the innocent listener. An evil mass of machine-funk with lashings of rhythm and blues and fusion delivered direct from the heart of the Witch, a misunderstood psycho-genius weaving his solo web deep within the dark studio walls. Not for the weak of heart or ear. Wire Magazine - Jannuary 2009: 2008 Rewind ................................................................... The Wire's Top 50 Records of the Year, plus writers' and musicians' reflections, and the year in riffs, Simon Reynolds on archival glut, Nick Cain at music's outer limits and Lisa Blanning on the dancefloor. Features: Emeralds (Kosmische-inspired drone of Ohio's analogue converts); Peverelist (Bristol bass technician's sound is rooted in futurist beats and the idea of perpetual motion); Global Ear: Knoxville, TN (an underground scene inspired by Cormac McCarthy and Sun Ra at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains); Cross Platform: Peter Liechti (The Swiss film maker reflects on the 'sound film' he made with electronics duo Voice Crack); Invisible Jukebox: Animal Collective. Epiphanies: (Hugo Wilcken explains how Joy Division brought visions of post-industrial Europe to the beaches of 80s Sydney). VA - Oh Graveyard, You Can't Hold Me Always LP (Mississippi) ................................................................... Compilation of hard-to-find gospel recorded in the 60s & early 70s. More mediative & well-produced material than the Life Is A Problem LP. Nice old school tip-on sleeves. Great stuff. Lonnie Farris, Radio Four, Joe Townsend, White Family, Silver Quintette, James Carter & The Mighty Stars, Farris & Williams, Brother Willie Eason, Traveling Echoes, and Sensational Happy Travellers. VA - XXperiments LP (Die Stasi) ................................................................... Compilation that joins the dots between a bunch of new all-female avant/punk/primitive noise that hands you your ass the way No New York did. An epochal comp of contemporary 'Crimson Wave' and one that looks to have a defining influence on future sound-as-thought. Includes a couple ladies from Lafayette, IN!
