In the battle for most exciting new release for January 20th, 2009 - the winner is probably one that isn't on this list whatsoever. Love it or hate it, you cannot deny that inauguration day for President Barack Obama is the biggest news of the day around the world. That said, many of these newbies below are HUGE releases that will undoubtedly win your heart for months to come... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 1/20/2009 ................................................................... Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion CD (Domino) ................................................................... Their ninth full-length. The whoops and hollers that previously held together the sublime, chaotic urgency of their earlier work now signal the calm sense of euphoria and wonder that ripples through this wide eyed record. Vinyl restock imminent! Antony & the Johnsons - The Crying Light (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... The follow-up to "I Am A Bird Now" shifts thematic focus and explores Antony's relationship with the natural world. The intimacy of the Johnsons' sound is enveloped by avant-classical composer Nico Muhly's symphonic arrangements. "A soul stirring new work with daring compositions and captivating vocals. This isn't a heart breaking; it's a heart waking." --The Oregonian Andrew Bird - Noble Beast CD/2CD (Fat Possum) ................................................................... Swiftly picking up popularity with his fifth album The Mysterious Production of Eggs, Andrew Bird then signed with Fat Possum Records for his 2007 highly anticipated follow-up record Armchair Apocrypha. Now he stands poised with his new record Noble Beast which he spent most of 2008 working on. Deluxe edition includes a 2nd bonus CD of unreleased material. LP version in 2 weeks. Bon Iver - Blood Bank EP (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... This 4-song collection continues down the path forged by 2008's critically acclaimed "For Emma, Forever Ago". Bon Iver's snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. As much as "Emma" is about the cold, "Blood Bank" is about the warmth that gets you through it. Both expansive and intimate, these songs explore the darker and lighter natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a glimpse into the natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize Justin Vernon's music. Colossal Yes - Charlemagne's Big Thaw (Ba Da Bing) ................................................................... After Comets on Fire played Auckland, Utrillo Kushner met one of his idols, the legendary DIY producer and songwriter Chris Knox. Inspired by the Kiwi indie-pop formulas of Tall Dwarfs, The Clean, and The Verlaines, Kushner set out to write his own songs using piano as the main instrument. Produced by Kelley Stoltz and mixed by Ben Chasny. Kushner pays respect to songwriters like Robyn Hitchcock, Dan Bejar of Destroyer, and Alex Chilton while also incorporating the honesty of Graham Nash's Songs for Beginners, the romanticism of Nikki Sudden's Waiting on Egypt, and the sonic merriment of Thunderclap Newman's Hollywood Dream. Fiction Family - s/t (ATO) ................................................................... Debut for this duo consisting of members of Nickel Creek and Switchfoot. Both artists have achieved immense success with their respective bands. Sean Watkins is the guitar player and founding member of the Grammy Award winning trio Nickel Creek. Jon Forman is the guitarist and lead singer of the Grammy-nominated Rock band Switchfoot. Both Watkins and Forman, being vocalists and instrumentalists, took turns singing lead and they both played several instruments on each song. Nickel Creek fiddle player Sara Watkins is also featured on several songs. Group Bombino - Guitars From Agadez LP (Sublime Frequencies) ................................................................... Led by the guitar virtuoso Omara Mochtar, the group's debut LP represents the latest chapter in the modern sound of the Tuareg revolution. As of 2008, Niger's Tuareg rebellion is in full force again, and Bombino is in exile to parts unknown. This music and its messages of hope, justice, and desire for validation of the Kel Tamachek way of life ring louder than ever. Side 1 features the "dry guitar" sound, a selection of songs sung among the dunes, camels and stars of the Tenere desert. Side 2 showcases the electric fury of the full band, a melding of heavy, psychedelic guitar heroics with a raw, garage sound, back beat percussion, all swirling in extended trance rock moves. Recorded live and unfiltered in Agadez and the surrounding desert in 2007, with the band's equipment powered by generators and an unflinching dedication to the rebellion, Bombino's music transcends any influence and ignites the raw passion of its message to the outside world. Hunches - Exit Dreams (In the Red) ................................................................... Portland's finest purveyors of cacophonous garage, delivering ragged-edged rock 'n' roll with such devastating hidden melody, one is left wondering how the band crammed such pop into the noise cavalcades. Having released two previous full-lengths, The Hunches are back with Exit Dreams, their third (and possibly final) album that captures their fiery live form on wax once more. It's a veritable melee of vicious guitar savagery and lo-fi freak-out fugginess, the perfect follow-up to Hobo Sunrise- a raging riot of an album that leaves ringing ears, bloody mouths, and shot-to-sh!t synapses sizzling with amplified excess. La Otracina - Blood Moon Riders (Holy Mountain) ................................................................... Don't be fooled by the King Diamond-style logo. This liberation of inverted progressive surf rock from psychedelic epithets plays like a fan-fiction account of Dick Dale's meeting with Sonny Sharrock at Amon Dueuel II's rehearsal space to discuss the "post-rock" epidemic. Unlike so many other instrumental soundtrack bands who employ ho-hum, choose-your-own-adventure tactics, La Otracina sticks to the rails of their own twisting corkscrews and spine-snapping dives. This work does not lend itself to the standard-fare apathy of background music. Blood Moon Raiders is its own ride, with its own ticket, and the doors are locked after take-off. Matt & Kim - Grand (Fader) ................................................................... Brooklyn-based duo Matt & Kim return with their 2nd album. During the period in between records the duo has toured extensively and developed a loyal and growing fan base that eagerly awaits the release of Grand. The band spent the last nine months recording and tweaking Grand in between tour dates. The result is an album that takes the band's musicianship and songwriting to the next level and also serves as a glowing representation of how far Matt and Kim have come since their debut. A.C. Newman - Get Guilty (Matador) ................................................................... The second solo album from A.C. Newman, leader and songwriter behind The New Pornographers, finds the pop songsmith in decidedly more upbeat and guitar heavy form than on the last NP's album. "Get Guilty" is a set of layered pop songs of great melodic and lyrical depth. "A.C. Newman deserves every last bit of praise thrown his way. In a better world, he would be our Elton, our Todd, our McCartney" - All Music Guide Jim O'Rourke & Loren Connors - Two Nice Catholic Boys (Family Vineyard) ................................................................... These two nice Catholic boys met at the crossroads each night during a 1997 European tour. By this time Jim O'Rourke had already reissued Loren Connors' seminal heartbreak album In Pittsburgh on his Dexter's Cigar label, and produced Hoffman Estates, the guitarist's big-band mash-up with Alan Licht. Together, they unravel slow motion ghost blues across three extended pieces that evolve from Connors' Martian style to O'Rourke's thundering, feedback-splattered lead grooves. For this live CD, only the second duo release by these musical partners, O'Rourke has returned to hours of recordings captured across Europe. Robert Pollard - The Crawling Distance (GBV) ................................................................... Solo release from the prolific Alternative singer/songwriter and former leader of Guided By Voices. From the stately Krautrock chug of the album opener, 'Faking My Harlequin', to the schizo-frenetic closing track, 'Too Much Fun', with its structural U-turns piled on top of tempo shifts, The Crawling Distance is unlike any Pollard release yet. Six Organs of Admittance - RTZ 2CD/3LP (Drag City) ................................................................... Double-CD or Triple-LP epic that fashions several lesser-known pieces from 6OA's early years into a massive prismatic arc, colossal and organic like some wonder of the ancient world. RTZ is an iridescent chimera in full flight, viewed through stained glass. Cataloging these early non-album excursions requires a bit of leg-work. RTZ travels back to the dawn of this century to locate 'Resurrection,' half of a split 12" with Charalambides. 'Warm Earth, Which I've Been Told' is half of a split with Vibracathedral Orchestra from 03. 'You Can Always See the Sun,' was part of Three Lobed Recordings subscription series in 02. And 'Nightly Trembling' was released way back in 1999 in an edition of 33 copies, all given away for free! That's some spiritual stuff right there. Combined with a never-before-released tracks. J Tillman - Vacilando Territory Blues (Western Vinyl) ................................................................... Josh Tillman drums and sings in Fleet Foxes. Since 2004, he has also quietly been releasing records. The alienating starkness and well lived-in narratives of his first few records endeared him to fans of and drew comparisons to the likes of Nick Drake, Will Oldham, Jason Molina and Elephant Micah. Each song imbues with the same strikingly disconsolate singing and devastatingly poignant prose that Tillman is known for and accented with some of his most gorgeous, spare arrangements. Titus Andronicus - Airing of Grievances (XL) ................................................................... Patrick Stickles, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, launches his insights across a wall of defiant, triumphant rock anthems, which have earned comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, The Pogues, and The Replacements. "Patrick Stickles howls with anguish way beyond his 22 years, often cramming lyrics into tight spaces just to make sure he gets the last word in. The drama's more Boss than Bright Eyes, fueled by blue collar frustration and, most notably, beer" - Pitchfork Umphrey's McGee - Mantis (Sci Fidelity) ................................................................... Over 2 years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay. And in an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material - a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live on-stage before recording studio versions. Wino - Punctuated Equilibrium (Southern Lord) ................................................................... The debut solo album from Metal guitarist Scott 'Wino' Weinrich. Over the last 25 years, Wino has defined heavy music and is truly the Godfather of the movement. Starting with the Obsessed and Saint Vitus and onto his mind blowing power trios: Spirit Caravan and The Hidden Hand, his virtuosity on six strings is matched perfectly with his soulful vocals and powerful lyrics. Finally, fans of underground the cult guitar hero can rejoice because Wino's first solo album is upon us! The Vinyl Zone ...................................................................
