It is definitely time for the winter blanket! If you can shovel a path down to ye olde record shoppe, we have some new music for you (including never before stocked old King Khan titles!) Get em before Round 2 of winter hits us later today. And then, come out to Bears Place tomorrow night for the Landlocked sponsored power-pop explosion of Genteman Jesse and Paul Collins Beat (ex-Nerves, the Beat, Hangin' on the Telephone!) If you dig your pop hooks deep and love Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, The Knack, etc - this is a show you do not want to miss! See you here AND there... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 1/27/2009 ................................................................... The Bird and the Bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future (Blue Note) ................................................................... Greg Kurstin ('bee') and Inara George ('bird') make syncopated danceable pop that sounds like audible sunshine. Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future is definitely new sonic terrain for the Los Angeles-based duo, The Bird & The Bee. Every bit as beguiling as their debut, the album retains its predecessor's lithe melodies and Brazilian influences, but takes its stylish, '60s pop deeper into the psychedelic period of the Tropicalia era. Blackout Beach - Skin of Evil (Soft Abuse) ................................................................... Blackout Beach is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (from Frog Eyes and Swan Lake), and Skin of Evil is his second full-length. Skin of Evil is remarkable in the sense that a. it contains a story, and b. it sticks to the story; a rare occurrence in these free times. "Donna" is the subject, and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song (Donna gets her song, too). Composed, played and recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the dark side of the heady proto-punk Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner, David Thomas) with a minimal, textural & almost Suicide-ish sense of pop form and the experimental nature of recent Scott Walker works. Cotton Jones - Paranoid Cocoon (Suicide Squeeze) ................................................................... Cotton Jones features ex-members of Page France. This music mixes elements of soul, rock, and gospel into a gauzy cocoon of small-town sound. An album of quiet, wooden psychedelia that reflects the duo's casual pursuit of comfort and freedom under the mountains of Cumberland, Maryland, where creeks zigzag in the lonesome dark of the forest, and a red moon hangs overhead. Dalek - Gutter Tactics (Ipecac) ................................................................... Newark, NJ's underground hip-hop duo, Dalek (pronounced dial-ekt) starts the new year with the group's fifth album Gutter Tactics. A group whose intense lyrics would clear the air even as its sonic density threatened to clear the room. This is a collection of who they are at this point and what they see around them, so it's a dark album, full of anger, some fear and also hope. It's an album that's raw, heavy, but full of clarity. Franz Ferdinand - Tonight (Sony) ................................................................... The third album from Glasgow-based modern rockers. Tonight: Franz Ferdinand sees them taking a step back from the Post-Punk revival sounds that gave them their breakthrough. With Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, the band are seen to incorporate more disparate influences such as Jamaican Dub and elements of Electronica. What remains of the old Franz Ferdinand is their knack for locating a danceable rhythm and their gentle, deadpan humour. The choice of Dan Carey as producer is in keeping with this new direction, the past credits of whose include CSS and Hot Chip. Free bonus 12" with purchase! Otis Gibbs - Grandpa Walked a Picketline (Thirty Tigers) ................................................................... Otis grew up in the rural town of Wanamaker, IN. He first stepped on stage at the age of 4, when he sang Jimmie Rodgers' "Waiting for a Train" at a neighborhood honky tonk. This CD is a glimpse inside of an America that you don't see on the evening news, but it is the America most of us see at our doorsteps. In 2004, his critically acclaimed, "One Day Our Whispers" was released. The track "The Peoples Day" was later included in a Wall Street Journal list compiled by Billy Bragg of the "Top 5 Songs with Something to Say." This placed Gibbs in the company of Bob Dylan, The Clash, Sam Cooke, and Chuck Berry. This album was produced and mixed by Chris Stamey, engineered by legendary Motown engineer, Bob Olhsson, and was recorded in Nashville, TN with an impressive list of players including, Al Perkins, Don Dixon, Tim Easton and Will Rigby. RIYL Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, John Prine. Golden Boots - The Winter of our Discotheque (Park the Van) ................................................................... This Southwest alt-country band mixes psychedelic rock, folk, and country which has drawn comparisons to Alex Chilton, The International Submarine Band, Beck, and The Monkees. A blend of pop-folk with distortion-laden breaks, fuzz guitar, primitive keyboards, and the unique clarity of unencumbered experimentation. Kentucky Nightmare - Take Her Favour (Standard) ................................................................... This reissue is the same songs as their self-released CD, but now Standard Recordings are taking it nationally... In Summer 2003, Simon P. Moore began writing songs that required two guitar parts, so in addition to recruiting Karen Jensen to take the reigns on bass and vocals, he duplicitously coerced David Woodruff into playing guitar and singing. The result, Kentucky Nightmare, is rocking melodic, clever, and crafty. Loney, Dear - Dear John (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... Loney Dear is the recording name for multi-instrumentalist and Swedish home-recording phenom Emil Svanangen. "Dear John" is an album of contrasts. It will cozy up to you through the bleakest of winters and be your shade in the blistering summer sun. "Despair has never sounded so sweet" - Spin Of Montreal - An Eluardian Instance EP (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... An Eluardian Instance AKA The Jon Brion EP is Brion's most recent masterpiece and finds him reinterpreting two cuts from of Montreal's most recent album Skeletal Lamping. These are by no means remixes as Brion literally reinterprets the songs by taking the basic tracks and adding more instrumentation and backing vocals - including the work of Nickel Creek vocalist and mandolin-player. Grammy-nominated producer Jon Brion has worked with Spoon, Kanye West, Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple as well as scored the films Magnolia, Synechdoche NY, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Doug Paisley - s/t (No Quarter) ................................................................... An album of folk songs that represent the American malaise. Sure, Doug is Canadian, but so is Neil Young and four-fifths of The Band, and that didn't stop them from tapping into the collective psyche of the continent. This debut recalls an era of songwriting that was simpler, more honest, more modest. A time before iPods and My Space, when making a good album was simply enough. Caroline Peyton - Mock Up / Intuition [reissues] (Asterisk) ................................................................... Three years after Numero Group took on the private press with Ladies From The Canyon compilation, the label returns to Mitchell-ite #1 Caroline Peyton. Issued in 1972, Mock Up has been expanded to 14 songs, including her 3 vocal cuts on the Screaming Gypsy Bandits In The Eye LP. Dug up in the process was a live performance at the Hummingbird Cafe in 1972 captured on film, which has been added as enhanced content on the CD. Intuition has been expanded to 17 tracks, including 2 studio outtakes and 5 demos recorded for Curb Records. In addition to scores of unpublished photos, the booklet is jammed full of Edd Hurt's detailed liner notes that document not only the making of Mock Up, but also the Bloomington, IN scene of the 70s. A middle road between Buffy Sainte-Marie's electro-augmented Illuminations and Nick Drake's Pink Moon. - Pitchfork Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Old Money (Stones Throw) ................................................................... Solo release from The Mars Volta guitarist. The addictive melodies and passionate execution of each performance render Old Money perhaps the most accessible of his non-Volta recordings, and the perfect entry point to anyone not yet familiar with what this prolific artist has to offer. The album fits comfortably between the guitarist's monumental work with The Mars Volta, and his prior rock-based solo releases. Loosely based on the concept of exploitative industrialists and, well, their old money, the album presents a 10-track collection of concise compositions, which range from Progressive to Psychedelic to downright funky. Many of these sounds could easily be at home on a Volta record. Spiritual Singers - Ntsamina LP (Mississippi) ................................................................... Congolese gospel group from the early '70's. Loose-knit, almost 'Shaggs-like' rhythms. Accompanied by male and female vocals. From slow dirges reminiscent of Beatles pop melodies to fast African rockers inspired by American '50s R&B. A truly unique record. Full-color beautiful cover in the stylish tip-on sleeve. Bruce Springsteen - Working on a Dream (Columbia) ................................................................... One of the finest songwriters of his generation. Working on a Dream was recorded with the E Street Band and features 12 new compositions plus a bonus track: 'The Wrestler'. The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. The album is the fourth collaboration between Springsteen and Brendan O'Brien, who produced and mixed the album. Deluxe version includes a bonus DVD that contains 30 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage on the making of the album. Free lyric booklet with purchase! Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun DVD (Capitol) ................................................................... The complete live performance of Brian Wilson's critically acclaimed new studio album from Capitol Records Studio A. Also includes a feature length documentary film, Going Home, about the making of the album and a look at Brian Wilson's life-long personal and creative relationship with Southern California. Directed & edited by George Dougherty. Additional bonus features include an interview between Zooey Deschanel and Brian and his Black Cab Session in the UK as well as an optional 5.1 surround stereo mix of the album. Nice!
