Thanks a lot, Punxsutawney Phil! You say 6 more weeks of winter and now we wake up to this. I might have to dig out my recipe for Groundhog Goulash! But hey, don't let the man (err groundhog) bring you down! Perk on up cuz we've got a ton of new music for you and it ain't gunna sit around and listen to itself all day like I do. Listen to myself that is... hello? Is this thing on? ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 2/3/2009 ................................................................... Black Gold - Rush (Red Bull) ................................................................... Multi-instrumentalists Eric and Than met while playing with different bands (they toiled individually for Panic at the Disco, Ambulance LTD, M. Ward, Boredoms) and recorded this debut on breaks from their paying gigs. Breathlessly experimental, the Brooklyn duo will try any genre once - MOR ("The Comedown"), MGMT falsetto funk ("Breakdown"), and sweeping orchestral rock ("Plans & Reveries") - as long as it's grafted to a dance beat and a big hook. Nearly every song is a potential single begging for an extended disco edit. Mike Bones - A Fool for Everyone (Social Registry) ................................................................... "Bones is a guitar hero inside and out, master apprentice of a steel-eyed, determined blues first informed by punk, not the sallow, honeyed agony seeping out of our most emotionally isolated singer-songwriters" - Dusted. Features contributions from Matt Sweeney and Douglas Armour as well as members of Antony & The Johnsons, Sian Alice Group, Favourite Sons, and Jah Division. Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew (ATO) ................................................................... Debut album from the singer/songwriter, housed in a sleeve that Lisa did the needle-work for herself, The album features 10 tracks including 'An Ocean And A Rock', 'Venn Diagram' and the lead single, 'Lille'. Lisa has contributed guest vocals on a number of other artists' recordings, including The Frames, Mic Christopher, and Herbie Hancock. She performed on the track 'Don't Explain,' with Damien Rice on Hancock's album, Possibilities. Heartless Bastards - The Mountain (Fat Possum) ................................................................... The Mountain is the 3rd album from Heartless Bastards. Leader Erika Winnerstrom recently relocated to Austin for a change of inspirational scenery and a new recording project. With the help of producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead), she assembled a group of musicians with whom she gave the songs life and uncovered yet another layer of herself and the Heartless Bastards. The Mountain delivers the powerful howl that fans expect from the Heartless Bastards, but also weaves in adventure with mandolins, banjos, strings and Erika's transcendent voice. Howlies - Trippin' With Howlies (Over Under) ................................................................... Howlies' debut album, "Trippin with Howlies", is an unexpected re-interpretation of garage, doo-wop, bubblegum, powerpop and 21st century rock n roll. Producer Kim Fowley (The Runaways, The Modern Lovers, The Germs) says Howlies are "the first Rock & Roll band of the 21st Century." Catch them live next tuesday at Total Trash at the Bluebird! Ben Kweller - Changing Horses (ATO) ................................................................... Over the course of his 3 studio albums, Ben Kweller has become known as a top-shelf purveyor of the powerhouse pop song. But on Changing Horses, the 27-year-old has gone back to his roots, saying "Some of the first songs I wrote as a kid, before I got into punk rock and underground bands, were country songs." Changing Horses (whose title refers not only to taking on a new musical genre, but also to relocating his family to Austin, TX) reflects that period. An all-analog recording that was tracked to 2" tape, with limited overdubs. Mojo Magazine - Nick Cave (March 2009) ................................................................... He's emerged from the darkened depths of a gothic punk nightmare to cement himself as one of the most significant songwriters of his generation encountering hard drugs and raging inner demons along the way. In a MOJO world exclusive, Nick Cave looks back over the turmoil and joy of the last thirty years. Plus an interviews and articles with Brian Eno, Ry Cooder, Jane Birkin, Johnny Marr, Ron Asheton, The Dave Clark Five, Bruce Springsteen and a FREE CD of Nick Cave's roots and collaborations. Willie Nelson & Asleep at the Wheel - Willie and the Wheel (Bixmeaux) ................................................................... Asleep at the Wheel has been reviving western swing music for almost forty years and Willie Nelson has been playing, well, just about every type of music (except maybe rap) for well over forty. Jerry Wexler originally came up with this concept back when Willie was on the Atlantic label but before the record could be made, Willie left Atlantic for CBS Records and so the idea was shelved. Jump ahead to 2007 when the Wheel went out on the Last of the Breed tour with Nelson, Ray Price and Merle Haggard. Wexler went to one of the shows and started pushing to do the album again. Or The Whale - Light Poles and Pines (Seany) ................................................................... With a strong DIY ethic and a Carter family chemistry, Or the Whale weaves driving indie-rock with sweet folk lullabyes, bootstompin' roots, drifting porch anthems, honesty and energy. The San Francisco Guardian said, 'brandishing four Grand Ole Opry-worthy vocalists - frequently harmonizing to thrilling effect - as well as three other accomplished musicians, Or, the Whale throw one hell of a barn dance.' Phosphorescent - To Willie (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... In 1975, Willie Nelson recorded "To Lefty From Willie", ten songs in which Nelson paid homage to Lefty Frizell, reinterpreting his favorites from the Frizzell catalog and stamping them with his unique voice. Now Phosphorescent has done the same for Willie Nelson on this recording of eleven hidden Nelson gems and lost classics. An unabashed musical love letter. Telefon Tel Aviv - Immolate Yourself (Bpitch Control) ................................................................... TTA have landed on Ellen Allien's Berlin-based BPitch Control label and adopted a resolutely more upfront and upbeat sound. Recorded over the course of a year, Immolate Yourself is very much a departure from the Hefty label-era Telefon Tel Aviv, but Josh Eustis and Charlie Cooper have devised a sound that's at once contemporary and timeless. Vocals often remain shrouded in sonic fog, but this actually contributes to giving this album a moody touch, even when at its most upbeat. Refreshed and revived, Telefon Tel Aviv have produced with this third album their most enjoyable and enduring record to date. Von Bondies - Love, Hate and Then There's You (Majordomo) ................................................................... Now in their ninth year together, Jason Stollsteimer and drummer Don Blum have taken their music to new places while holding on to the core values they've always exhibited. Love, Hate and Then There's You picks up from the tighter, more nuanced sound of the 2004 hit single "C'mon C'mon," which subsequently took on a second life as the theme to Denis Leary's highly acclaimed FX TV series Rescue Me. On riff-happy tracks like first single "Pale Bride" and the anthemic leadoff track "This Is Our Perfect Crime," on pounders like "I Don't Wanna" and "Chancer," and on the album-closing "Modern Saints" with its nearly ethereal intro, this is a Von Bondies with a renewed sense of purpose. Wavves - s/t (de Stijl) ................................................................... What do you get when you cross the Beach Boys' sunny melodies with the atonal guitars of Sonic Youth? Wavves, a one-man band starring 22-year-old Nathan Williams, a laid-back San Diego skateboarder. He began jamming in his bedroom on electric guitar, channeling his influences - Beatles, Nirvana, the Vaselines, the Wipers - into really distorted punk tunes with hummable hooks. RIYL Times New Viking, Jay Reatard, Nobunny, rawknroll! Jim White - Funny Little Cross to Bear EP (Luaka Bop) ................................................................... This is an EP of roadside rarities recorded by Jim White at some of the country's best indie record stores, radio programs and concert halls. Not only can live versions of favorites be found here, there are also tracks that have thus far only been experienced by those brethren partaking in the Jim White Fellowship of Song that his concerts become. It includes songs like "Jim 3:16" where he postulates that a bar is just a church where they serve beer and a live, unreleased version of "Stranger Candy," a beautiful song left off his "Transnormal Skiperoo" album that makes us wonder what those honchos at Jim's label were thinking. Zero Boys - Vicious Circle / History of [CD/LP reissues] (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... The long awaited re-issue of 1982's "Vicious Circle" and even moreso, the lost 2nd album "History Of" from local heroes, Zero Boys. Unlike most coast punk of the time, the Zero Boys were pointing the way to a scene that could accommodate heaping helpings of melody, intelligence, and rock 'n roll suss, not just turbo-charged ferocity. When the Ramones lost it, the Zero Boys found it - adding a slam brigade fist to the blitzkrieg beat. "History Of" has been remastered from the original tapes. Liner notes by Jack Rabid. Between this and "Vicious Circle", the entire recorded output of this legendary Midwest punk band's original line up is finally collected. Zombi - Spirit Animal (Relapse) ................................................................... Zombi, having previously taken cinematic synth-based rock as far as it could go, added not only guitars to Spirit Animal but a whole new attitude as well. Spirit Animal is a tour de force whose up-tempo moods, patented psychedelic poly-rhythms and bouncing, lush interplay between men and machines ushers in a scintillating new era for the band. With an outpouring of genuine emotion and melody, Spirit Animal gives instrumental music the punch in the gut it needed by blending a genuine sense of warmth and emotion with the darkness the band is heralded for. RIYL Tangerine Dream, Goblin, Isis, Pelican, early Genesis. VA - Fly Girls! (Soul Jazz) ................................................................... B-Boys Beware: Revenge Of The Super Female Rappers. Fly Girls! is a killer compilation of funky, female Rap featuring classic tracks alongside super-rare cuts from the queens of Hip Hop. Spanning over four decades, this release features a stellar line-up of female artists who have all defined Hip Hop and Rap over the years. The album covers all areas of female Rap and includes female funky Hip Hop, Old School, Electro and Miami Bass from the 80s, 90s and beyond. VA - I Woke Up One Morning In May LP (Mississippi) ................................................................... Sequel to the Last Kind Words compilation. This slab also has a few of our favorite obscurities like Little Hat Jones and Louie Lasky. Fourteen songs - all classics! Full color beautiful cover in the stylish tip-on sleeve."
