Whoa. We've been on quite the bender lately - partying in Nash Vegas followed by our own 3 year birthday celebration. (We will announce the winners from our birthday giveaway later this week.) We don't feel tardy, but certainly have fallen a little behind. Sorry. The new releases don't stop and neither does Record Store Day - April 18th - a TON more releases have been announced (see below in COMING SOON) with many more yet to come. As well as more local surprises as well. Its gunna be a doozy! And grab your Bonnie Prince Billie tickets - they're going quick! And don't miss Neil Hamburger at the Funnybone on friday night for 2 shows! Follow us on Twitter, too: http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/10/2009 ................................................................... Arbouretum - Song of the Pearl (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... This is their third full-length, following "Kale", their LP-only split with Pontiak released last year. CD version is presented in a 4-panel mini-LP style jacket. LP version is limited to 1,000 copies and includes a free download. Arbouretum tours constantly, having played with Endless Boogie, Grails, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Psychic Paramount, David Karsten Daniels, Cass McCombs, and Meg Baird. Bell Orchestre - As Seen Through Windows (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Montreal's Bell Orchestre's sophomore full-length, As Seen Through Windows is filled with stunning, lush instrumentation, and builds off where their acclaimed, Juno nominated, 2005 debut left off. Recorded with John McEntire (Tortoise/Sea & Cake), As Seen Through Windows continues the sextet's exploration of various classical styles and non-traditional musical forms to create a panoramic soundtrack, expansive and enveloping, both challenging and pleasurable to the listener. Bishop Allen - Grrr (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... After five years of comparisons to Jonathan Richman, The Kinks, Bright Eyes, and Spoon in rave reviews from Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and others, Bishop Allen has developed an artistry and sound unmistakably their own on "Grrr". The lyrics, praised for their "poetic insight" in the LA Times, have a universality that resonates with listeners of all ages and earned champions ranging from the young comic actor Michael Cera to NPR host Scott Simon. Blk Jks - Mystery EP (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... With a wrecking crew rhythm section, debonair vocals, and guitar concoction of one part shred and two parts soul, Blk Jks shoot an African music sensibility through the tenets of rock. It's easy to politicize them. Here's a band that's instantly young, black and fly even as they reclaim styles that have been stolen, watered down, and regurgitated for generations. And yet to get caught up in anything but their sound is to sell this phenomenon short. Chin Chin - The Flashing, The Fancing (Def Jux) ................................................................... Featuring an impressive roster of side men and soloists, with credits including TV On The Radio, Medeski Martin & Wood, Spoon, Antibalas, Sinead O'Connor, Blonde Redhead, Cibbo Matto, The Temptations, The Delfonics, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. The LP is as sophisticated as it is fun and catchy. Moody, world weary love songs sit comfortably in between psychedelic synth freak-outs and dance floor bangers. Chin Chin aren't afraid to let listeners think a bit while they burn the disco out. Cursive - Mama, I'm Swollen (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... Ever since Cursive burst onto the music scene with their 1997 debut album, the band has consistently and continually churned out heady albums heralded by critics and fans alike. Wrestling with life's miseries and mysteries, Mama, I'm Swollen is an album brimming with the universal, questioning the human condition, social morality, and the "Peter Pan Syndrome" of grown men.On their sixth album, the quartet proves yet again why "after all these years" they remain one of the most exciting and inventive rock bands today. Extra Golden - Thank You Very Quickly (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... The third release from this international group (two members are from the US and two are from Kenya) is a six-song wonder where joyous danceable anthems were crafted in the wake of political and economic upheaval in Kenya. The opening and closing tracks extend a humble thanks to all the fans who donated money to keep the band's families safe amidst Kenya's post-election violence in 2008. Catch em at WIUX Culture Shock 2009! From Monument to Masses - On Little Known Frequencies (Downtown) ................................................................... From Monument to Masses came together when drummer Francis Choung replied to a post from a transplanted Chicago math rock guitarist Matthew Solberg who had been ranting on craigslist about wanting to create some angry, angular, and soulful music that would have little to do with the everpresent specters of punk and metal. Inspired by bands like Refused, Faraquet, and Shipping News, they wanted to write meticulous yet raw music that would escape the math rock niche and find a new territory altogether. Soon thereafter, Sergio Robledo-Maderazo joined on bass and synth, and the three discovered a sound and a philosophy. Politics and music became inseparable. Handsome Furs - Face Control (Sub Pop) ................................................................... The second album by this Montreal band draws inspiration from Eastern Europe and re-maps Eastern Bloc surveillance state themes to contemporary life, showing the irony of our acceptance of self-monitoring through blogs, credit/debit accounts, surveillance cameras, and GPS devices. The album's juxtaposition of cold, metronomic, electronic beats with jagged, dissonant and frail guitars convey what it is to be human in the 21st century. At the same time, it provides the means to opt out. Mirah - (a)spera (K) ................................................................... Her fourth solo album strikes a bold path across a landscape of dynamic and varied melody forms and holds many surprises within its undulating reverie. "(a) spera" is Latin for hopes and difficulties linked inseparably, as we all are. This brave trek through a fragile ancient forest unfolds, revealing the destruction wrought by cruel conquest, recalls the relics of a love never realized, and decries the loss of ancient wisdom. Kalimba, hurdy gurdy, bongos, horns...instruments for all worlds, all times. Featured musicians include Chris Funk (The Decemberists), Tara Jane O'Neill, and Lori Goldston. Monks - The Early Years (Light In The Attic) ................................................................... Today, garage, psych, and punk are 3 overused words to say the least. They're dropped from every direction to brand, market, and sell, but looking back to the mid-60s, there was only one group of musical mavericks that clearly defined them. The Monks were five beat-playing American GIs stationed in Germany who, after their discharge, decided to stay and continue their musical mission. They transformed themselves and their sound into a holy racket like the world had never known. They literally birthed the above genres through a fuzz-drenched evolution of sound, bursting with social commentary and future primitive rhythms. Includes 36-page deluxe booklet featuring in-depth notes, interviews, lyrics and countless unseen photos. Morrow - s/t (Excursions into the Abyss) ................................................................... With their debut self-titledÊfull-length record, Morrow is prepared to leave their mark and carve out a unique place for themselves in the widely diverse, ever-evolving, and historically rich Bloomington music scene. Their energy is real, their intentions are unassuming and sincere, and their songs are gritty, rough, and loud at just the right times. Morrow makes aggressive rock n roll in a way that a lot of bands seem to have forgotten about these days. First run limited to 100. Mt. St. Helen's Vietnam Band - s/t (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... At first blush, this album recalls Wolf Parade with the band's frayed melodic sensibilities and urgent, driven vocals in particular. Of course, Wolf Parade borrowed a few ideas from Modest Mouse, whose beginnings were indebted to the Pixies. This is the sort of musical lineage that creates the foundation for this group's debut. But dig a little deeper and strains of Queen's epic rock peer through, while exhilarating guitar work that nods towards Thin Lizzy appears in more than a few songs. Catch em at Bear's Place next month! Elvis Perkins - In Dearland (XL) ................................................................... The follow-up to the exquisitely melancholic and much hailed solo debut "Ash Wednesday". On this release, Elvis is joined by a talented trio of friends, all clearly influenced by a range of American roots music. At once raucous and profound, this record conjures both the greatest celebration and the saddest funeral, channeling an ageless wisdom that deepens with each listen. DM Stith - Heavy Ghost (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... Heavy Ghost communicates a startling range - from earnest yearning to heartbreak, shimmering hopefulness to the brink of existential despair. Stith's ethereal voice communicates the unfathomable - mysticism, the commingling of water and fire, waking dreams, spiritual torment - with reckless abandon rarely seen in many albums, let alone a debut work. A local artist with an album awesome enough to easily compete on the national level. RIYL Grizzly Bear, Sufjan. The Whitefield Brothers - In the Raw (Now Again) ................................................................... Whomp! These guys bring it all down on the beat - hitting harder than Cassius Clay at the Rome Olympics in '60, packing bass, guitar, and drums into one funky punch - pounding out a hard heavy groove all the way through their entire debut LP! Of course, these guys have the talent to do it right - sporting a connection to the Poets Of Rhythm that you can certainly hear in some of the album's more stoned-out grooves - and like that hip funky combo, the Whitefield Brothers maintain a strong mix of classic funky modes, with just the right touches of professional trippiness to push the whole thing over the top. An instant classic, Desco/Daptone-style. VA - Four Way Split Midwest LP (People in a Position to Know) ................................................................... Second installment in People In A Position To Know's regional "Buddy Band" series of Four-Way splits on limited edition vinyl. On the A side, The Impossible Shapes put their unique twist on metaphysical psychedelic folk, while their side projects, Wee Giant, NormanOak, Uno Moss, Goatmother, and Horns of Happiness, run the gamut from electro-dance, country and western, and shower-style accapella. On the flip side, Saturday Looks Good to Me plays orchestral indie pop with a beautiful bedroom pop aesthetic, while Emily Jane Powers kicks female vocaled twee pop.
