Are you ready for Spring Break 2009!?!? We are - if by Spring Break you mean burning the midnight oil in our filthy office/basement pricing quality music for your lovely ears to absorb while you are on the beach / cruising the strip / drunken haze of SXSW / sleeping all day. Par-tay. Anyway, perhaps you came to our unbelievably amazing Bonnie Prince Billie instore this past Friday - sorry we didn't let you know sooner, it was dropped in our laps with less than 24hrs notice! If you have photos, video, or recordings of it - please send them to us or drop them off at the store! And thanks for making it a huge success! In other news, we have added even MORE items to the Record Store Day listing - look for a consolidated listing on our website soon. And for now, enjoy a week of solace and fun - be seeing you. ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/17/2009 ................................................................... Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears - Tell em What Your Name Is! (Lost Highway) ................................................................... Formed in Austin, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears is an 8-piece, garage-soul ensemble featuring groove-laden guitars, penetrating brass and a fiery frontman who exudes power and attitude. Experiencing the raw energy of Joe's performances, accompanied by The Honeybears' masterful backing is the equivalent of a kick to the stomach. Their gut-shot style draws directly from their classic soul, R&B and blues influences. Inspiration from artists such as Otis Redding and The Bar-Kays, James Brown and Lightning Hopkins are clearly present in their songs and live shows, but Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears inject a full-tilt, unabashedly brash element to this old-school style. Recommended! Bonnie Prince Billy - Beware! (Drag City) ................................................................... Though Beware shares spit with its immediate predecessor, Lie Down in the Light, its reach is longer, its arches more grandiose. Where fiddle and steel contribute their rustic timbre alongside guitars and voices, a thickening thud of low tone rolls beneath, giving the record a bottom that s fun to watch bounce in new clothes. This indensifies the air and heralds Beware as Bonny's most ambidextrous record to date even more so than The Letting Go! Also available is the "special" ULTRALOAD edition, featuring a 10" record with 4 tracks not available on the CD or LP in addition to a full digital download of the album. Les Claypool - Of Fungi and Foe (Prawn Song) ................................................................... New release from the bass playing legend and leader of Primus. Since his last album release, Les has been busy with his films, scoring other people's films, scoring video games and just having fun out on tour. This album is a collection of songs inspired by the projects he has been working on over the past few yeard. Also on this album is a jam session with Eugene Hutz, the charismatic front-man of the band Gogol Bordello that turned into the track 'Bite Out Of Life'. Mark Galup - Livin' Far Out (self) ................................................................... Bloomington's Mark Galup offers up original acoustic country blues tunes, inspired by the masters that started it all, featuring exacting and innovative fingerstyle guitar accompaniments - all performed in full, unedited takes. RIYL Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, Bo Carter. Also RIYL their followers, John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Richard Bishop, etc. Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds - Dracula Boots (In the Red) ................................................................... New release from the founding member of The Gun Club. The legendary Kid Congo Powers returns to the psychedelic jungle with a stripped-down, no-frills set of volcanic songs. The premier voodoo guitarist for seminal sexy, swampy bands like Gun Club, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and The Cramps, Powers is a restless aesthete whose earlier solo efforts explored and mixed genres. With Dracula Boots, he comes back to his roots as a crackerjack guitarist playing the music that inspired him: the raw sounds of garage and early chicano rock. The Long Lost - The Long Lost Album (Ninja Tune) ................................................................... The Long Lost is the sound of love on so many levels and in so many ways that it's hard to list them. Imagine Nico had left The Velvet Underground and decided to relocate to California with Caetano Veloso. And imagine that the pair then slipped through a time portal while high on mescalin and came 'round in the late noughties, with the kind of production twists that era would allow. Imagine most of all their beautiful attempt to write and make a new popular music about love was completely sincere, utterly lacking in guile, and full of all the queasy, wonderful, sometimes awful overwhelming emotions. Nick Lowe - Quiet Please (best of + DVD) (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Quiet Please is the definitive career-spanning best-of from the British pop genius that makes all other collections obsolete. The 49-track compendium documents the development of one of popular music's greatest song crafters, from his pub rock days in Brinsley Schwarz and later Rockpile, to his now legendary solo career. Healthy doses of material from 20 different albums combine to make it clear why Lowe is credited by artists and critics alike with paving the way for punk as well as changing the face of pop music with albums like 'Jesus of Cool,' 'Labour of Lust' and 'At my Age.' Madeline - White Flag (Orange Twin) ................................................................... Though described in the past as a cross between The Softies, Kimya Dawson, and The Carter Family, Madeline now shares more in common with 70s superstars Joni Mitchell and Karen Carpenter. On her third full-length album, "White Flag," former Bloomingtonian Madeline securely sets herself apart from her peers through her intelligent, emotional lyrics, her clear, haunting voice, and her unique song writing. Madeline herself (now living in Athens, GA) has been traversing the country both with The White Flag Band (made up of members of The Music Tapes, Don Chambers + Goat and Elf Power) as well as solo, strengthening her already solid fan base. Willem Maker - New Moon Hand (Fat Possum) ................................................................... In the hills of East Alabama, Willem has been honing his skills in virtual secrecy for the past decade, deciding to step beyond the bedroom demos and occasional acoustic performances. Recorded at several different locations including Memphis' Electraphonic Recordings and at Mark Nevers' Nashville studio, New Moon Hand has a full guest cast of legendary Southern musicians such as Jim Dickson, Cedric Burnside, Alvin Youngblood Hart and many others. MOJO Magazine - April - The Who Sells Out Cover ................................................................... An in-depth journey into The Who Sell Out. The MOJO interview with Nick Lowe, the suave English new-waver with a 30 year career of songwriting genius. A rememberance for John Martyn. Plus Bat For Lashes, Ray Charles, an A-Z of US psych rock and a FREE CD of 15 tracks from the era. Mount Eerie - Dawn LP (PW Elverum) ................................................................... An archival core sample from an intensely creative period, the winter of 2002/2003 spent alone in a cabin in arctic Norway, wrestling with ghosts, gathering wood, acting out the myths; a kind of "lost album" finally properly recorded on just guitar and singing. It is released in 2 pretty different forms. This one, a white vinyl LP, is meant to accompany the book of the same name. This record comes with a special booklet of scary self portraits done in the dark window reflection in overflowing ink, vaguely corresponding to the overflowing darkness in the 19 songs. They have become known over the past few years at live shows and in other forms but never have they appeared all together like this, sung in the same way they were written, acoustic alone. Murder By Death / O'Death split 7" (Tent Show) ................................................................... Local powerhouse Murder By Death are releasing the second of 7 records (the first being with William Elliott Whitmore) in a 7" series where they trade covering songs with other bands they know. The second 7" features Murder By Death performing O'Death's "Home" and O'Death performing Murder By Death's "Brother". Limited and disappearing quick. Get em before they're gone! Willie Nelson - Naked Willie (Sony) ................................................................... After establishing himself as a major Nashville songwriter, Willie Nelson signed his first serious artist contract at RCA in 1964. At that time, the producers and A&R men like Chet Atkins were boss. Singers weren't allowed to select arrangements, musicians, studios - any of the key factors in making the records the artist has in mind. Willie was constantly frustrated by the syrupy strings, vocal group choruses and generally "slick" final product. Fast forward. Willie and long-time harmonica player Mickey Raphael are casually wondering what those records would or could sound like if only the multi-track tapes could be tracked down and the songs re-mixed with the original intent in mind. Gone are the strings and gangs of back-up singers. Gone, in fact is most of the production that always "ruined" the songs. This is a collection of 17 vintage RCA sides - spanning 1966-70 - the Willie way. Onra - 1.0.8 LP (Favorite) ................................................................... The deft fingers behind the awesome 'Chinoiseries' returns with another album of triple dope Dilla styled beat offcuts and idiosyncratic sample sketches. His last effort is one of the best instumental hiphop albums we've heard in the last few years so expectations were high for this one, but no worries, the man done good with a set of compact riddim visions and refried snippets of vinyl ephemera ranking up close to the likes of the late, great Dilla, Madlib or even the RZA due to his predilection for far Vietnamese and Far Eastern score samples and dialogue. The sample pot for this LP does however draw on a slightly different palette, with more attention placed on Electro-soul and synthy vibes run throughout, and knitted together with his innate knack for piecing together a buttered head nodder. Strange Boys - And Girls Club (In the Red) ................................................................... Austin, TX's The Strange Boys evoke a wild-eyed, porcelain-skinned innocence that is capable of summoning the wayward spirit of Brian Jones. The mystery of the South couples with the mastery of rhythm to create a sound completely timeless and familiar, yet absolutely raw and avant-garde. It's easy to imagine The Strange Boys and Girls Club, a sixteen-track beast, blasting out of any stereo system between The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Wire's Pink Flag and a voice as original and maddening as any. Wavves - Wavvves (Fat Possum) ................................................................... Led by Nathan Daniel William, who, when not watching Cops or drinking 40's in the park, blogs on classic rap and records waves of effortlessly great slack / crust / beach / punk compressed into 4 track cassettes in his San Diego bedroom. RIYL Jay Reatard, King Khan, Nobunny, etc etc. "Bad-trip music for cloudless days: surging distortion, sun-dazed hooks and a dark sense of humor... the battle between noise and melody veers from scary to hilarious to heroic, and as a metaphor for trying to feel good in trying times, it may hit you close to home." - Rolling Stone The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ................................................................... Drakkar Sauna - Wars and Tornadoes LP (Marriage) Fems - Go To A Party 7" (Drag City) Fukced Up - No Epiphany b/w No Age remix 7" (Matador) Kode 9 - Black Sun / 2 Far Gone 12" (Hyperdub) A Storm of Light / Nadja 2LP+CD (3/17) Syntheme - Vol. 2 / Vol. 3 12"s (Planet Mu) Woods - Songs of Shame LP (Woodsist) Also Released This Week (but not necc in stock, ask us!) ...................................................................
