NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/24/2009 ................................................................... Condo F**ks (aka Yo La Tengo) - F**kbook (Matador) ................................................................... This New London, CT trio tear through classic covers of Small Faces, Richard Hell, Beach Boys, Electric Eels, Troggs, Slade, and Flaming Groovies in the style that previously won them so much acclaim. "Condo F**ks are everything that rock music lacks today... rock 'n' roll for this generation without destroying the legendary past." -- Connecticut Post Dan Deacon - Bromst (Carpark) ................................................................... Fusing the growing intensity of his live performances with his background in electro-acoustic composition, the result is a collection of pieces that are intense and epic, and at the same time, down to earth and welcoming. Unlike the completely electronic "Spiderman Of The Rings", the instrumentation on "Bromst" is a mixture of acoustic and mechanical instruments, samples, and electronics. The intricate and complex parts are woven together into a rich, dense, noisy dance pop that has become Deacon's signature sound. The Decemberists - Hazards of Love (Capitol) ................................................................... The 17-song suite is rooted in ancient language and imagery, yet entirely modern and accessible. The Hazards Of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake, who recounts with spine-tingling ease how he came "to be living so easy and free." Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock and the Spinanes' Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles. DOOM - Born Like This (Lex) ................................................................... Born Like This is the new album from everyone's favorite metal-faced super-villan: MF DOOM. Contributors include DOOM's frequent collaborator, Ghost Killah, as well as Wu-Gambino Raekwon. Jake One produces the album's first single "Ballskin". Fever Ray (The Knife) - s/t (Mute) ................................................................... Karin Dreijer Andersson is one-half of The Knife. Fever Ray is the title, of both project and album, an evocation of the music's sound, intense and anxious, yet luminous. While recognizably the work of the same artist, it is dramatically different from The Knife. It's still constructed on electronic foundations and embellished with traditional instrumentation (guitar here, congas there), but Fever Ray is starker, moodier, in places quite somber - less an invasion, more a slow process of colonization. Serge Gainsbourg - Historie de Melody Nelson (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... Classic album from the controversial French singer/songwriter, originally released in 1971. Sex has always sold, but presented with a landmark musical backdrop, the combination is rare as finding the elusive "G Spot". Quite often, attempts fall flaccid, missing the titillating mark by a mile. But French icon and national treasure Serge Gainsbourg is no stranger to sexual proclivities, and with Histoire De Melody Nelson, he shared an erotic tale as seductive today as the day it was released. With help from actress, amour, and inspiration Jane Birkin, arranger/conductor and co-conspirator Jean-Claude Vannier, not to mention a tight hand picked crew of top shelf UK session musicians, Nelson is often cited as Gainsbourg's master work, an essential album for the discerning music lover. Indigo Girls - Poseidon and the Bitter Bug (IG) ................................................................... It's been two decades since the Indigo Girls launched their career with their independently released debut album, 1987's Strange Fire. Now, after entertaining millions of fans with their 10 major-label studio albums, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have come full circle with the independent release of their new album, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug on their new label IG Recordings. Abner Jay - True Story of Abner Jay LP (Mississippi) ................................................................... The ultimate one-man-band wild man from the 1960s of whom some have said 'the southern Hasil 'Haze' Adkins'. This compilation culled from Abners' self released LPs & 7"s featuring hits such as 'I'm So Depressed,' 'Cocaine', 'Vietnam,' & 'The Reason Young People Do Drugs.' Abner Jay was a one-man band singer/songwriter deserving of a wider listening audience than he received in his day. This is the first vinyl release of his material since the 70s. Great soulful folk & R&B music. Most copies include a press photo of Abner, transcriptions of his spoken word pieces, a reproduction of an informative pamphlet about Abner & a press statement penned by Abner himself. Lotus Plaza - The Floodlight Collective (Kranky) ................................................................... Debut release from Lotus Plaza AKA Lockett Pundt of Deerhunter. Pundt's first full length is an expansive meditation on the modern history of the Pop song with an obvious appreciation for the atmospheric vocal harmonies of the '50s, the Brill Building writers of the '60s, and the sounds of the early '80s UK Post-Punk scene. Mastodon - Crack the Skye (Reprise) ................................................................... Mastodon has taken hold of the leadership of the New Wave of Progressive Heavy Metal. The band's 2006 major-label debut Blood Mountain spun off a Grammy nomination and earned Top 5 Best Album Of The Year nods from Kerrang!, Revolver, and Metal Hammer, and a Top 10 at Rolling Stone. Now Crack The Skye, its fourth original studio album, mines subject matter from czarist Russia and astral travel to out-of-body experiences and Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes for an unrepentantly heavy aural assault that will shake the heavens. Deluxe Edition contains a bonus DVD featuring the making of Crack The Skye. Free sheet music with purchase! Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind (Temporary Residence) ................................................................... Just in time for their 10-year anniversary, Mono return with their fifth studio album. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with Mono's trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel, and tympani into their standard face-melting set up. MSTRKRFT - Fist of God (Downtown) ................................................................... The long-awaited sophomore album from the Electronic/Dance duo feature Jesse Keeler (formerly of Death From Above 1979) and Al-P. Since their 2007 debut album, The Looks, the duo have been busy remixing projects for other artists while piecing Fist Of God together. The duo's biggest influence on Fist Of God is legendary House producer Armand Van Helden, who advised them throughout the recording of the album. 1990s - Kicks (Rough Trade) ................................................................... The follow-up to the acclaimed "Cookies" features more sassy, infectiously catchy songs about Glasgow and girls in the rain. Inspired by "Scary Monsters" / "Golden Years" era Bowie and his work with Eno and Visconti, to Jay-Z through to Hall & Oates, the chops of Hot Chocolate, and even the folk licks of Richard Thompson. "...crafting catchy jams that alternate between anthemic pop and tightly wound punk" - Rolling Stone Obits - I Blame You (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Brooklyn's Obits are Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu), Sohrab Habibion, Greg Simpson, and Scott Gursky. In December 2008, they released their first single, "One Cross Apiece" b/w "Put It In Writing" on their own Stint Records label. This is their debut full-length. Red Red Meat - Bunny Gets Paid [2CD deluxe reissue] (Sub Pop) ................................................................... This 1995 release has been out of print for several years. The deluxe edition is re-mastered and accompanied by a seven-song second disc of alternate, demo, and single versions of album tracks, plus B-sides, covers, and a previously unreleased song from the same era, all packaged with expanded and enhanced album art. This is the band whose members went onto Califone. Royksopp - Junior (Astralwerks) ................................................................... One of the most celebrated & innovative artists in the elctronic genre, Norway's Royksopp return with the highly anticipated follow-up to their classic debut Melody AM and The Understanding, which combined lush atmospherics with enthralling pop. An inspired and ambitious musical confection fusing pure pop hooks with "technoperatic" dancefloor slammers. Featuring a team of top female vocalists/collaborators including Swedish superstar Robyn, Lykke Li, Karim Dreijer (The Knife) as well as fellow Norwegian Annell Drecker (who appeared on Royksopp's debut Melody A.M.). Swan Lake - Enemy Mine (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... Swan Lake is the musical collaboration of Daniel Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade), and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach). While their debut was a beautifully weaved mash up of disparate songwriting styles, this second effort reflects a more stripped down, deliberate approach to collaboration. It's as if they really tried to just make nice songs together. Valet - False Face Society LP (Mexican Summer) ................................................................... Brand new three-song monolith by the inimitable Honey Owens, a/k/a Valet, heading back towards the candlelit depths of her first full-length Blood is Clean with these crushers. "Angels Can't Stop" is a sidelong wall of drone, blissful vocals, and rumbling drum machinery, like the ghosts that live in the backing tracks of Loveless springing to life and smashing up cars for 16 minutes. "Dealer vs. Ocean" continues along this path, a plush, sunken-in swim through fathoms of ambience, feedback, and submerged percussive bass tones. The record is capped off with a stunning cover of "Rainbow," originally by Boris and Michio Kurihara, and given a treatment no one expected - hand drums and rain stick pounding against a serious groove, and superb fuzz-wah damage. Kurt Vile - God Is Saying This To You LP (Mexican Summer) Kurt Vile & the Violators - The Hunchback EP (Richie) ................................................................... Kurt Vile's latest LP is a compilation of tracks from Overnite KV, a tour-only CDR made in conjunction with a European tour of Kurt's other project (The War on Drugs), along with a handful of extra tracks recorded specifically for this release. Here we find Kurt solo, four-trackin' as usual, and blowing minds with his mix of bluegrass guitar, blazed singer-songwriterisms, and the knowledge of how to balance these contexts out with laidback precision. The initiated few know Kurt's been doing it for years - plugging in with a full on rock band called the Violators and gigging in all corners of Philly. With baritone guitar/bassist Adam Granduciel, rodeo slide & fuzz guitar from Jesse Turbo, and perfect percussion from Mike Zeng, the Violators are Kurt's Crazy Horse. Oddly pleasant singing, in-the-red fingerpicking, twisting swells of feedback, totally POUNDING drums, and Krautlike-zen fill both sides of this record. Loud and proud, The Hunchback EP looks right filed next to your Neil, Suicide, and Spacemen 3 LPs. Wire Magazine - April 2009 - Sun O))) cover ................................................................... The spooky Sun O))) are on the cover of The Wire this time around -- and other articles include a look at the mighty Magma, Sudden Infant, and Adrian Utley of Portishead on the Invisible Jukebox! And as usual, there's even more reviews than main stuff -- a wealth of helpful comments on new release in all sorts of genres -- plenty to keep your ears happy and your wallets empty. Also features a bonus CD -- with 21 tracks by artists who include Streifenjunko, Felix Kubin, Andres Loo, Whirling Hall Of Knives, Barbara Morgenstern, Violet, Laura Toxvaerd, and Animal Hospital.
