Record Store Day (April 18th 2009!) is coming together quite deliciously! Check out the RSD portion of our website to keep up with the exclusive releases for the day. At Landlocked we will be hosting an instore performance from Death Vessel, a DJ set from Zero Boys frontman Paul-Z, limited edition on-site screen-printing and MUCH more to be announced in next week's update. Check it. We can't blow your minds too much, because there is still plenty of goodness for THIS week, as well. Stop in Landlocked and pre-order Sonic Youth's The Eternal (out on June 9) on CD or 2xLP, and you'll also receive access to an advanced stream of the album (beginning April 28), a limited-edition live LP, exclusive MP3s and a poster. Pre-ordering is the only way to receive the live vinyl on release day! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/31/2009 ................................................................... Leonard Cohen - Live in London 2CD/DVD (Sony) ................................................................... For over four decades, Leonard Cohen has been one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time, a figure whose body of work achieves greater depths of mystery and meaning as time goes on. In 2008 Leonard Cohen embarked on his first tour in 15 years. Quickly recognized as musical folklore in the making, 29 of the original dates sold out almost immediately, leaving fans and critics alike hailing the show as a once in a lifetime experience. Gomez - The New Tide (ATO) ................................................................... A return to the always-freewheeling British band's more experimental roots, revealing a spirit born of boundless imagination and a longstanding collaborative relationship. Recorded with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, Califone). Flavors of Delta blues, psychedelia, and Krautrock all come into play, resulting in a musically mischievous and remarkably forward-thinking collection. Includes guest vocalist Amy Milan (of Stars/Broken Social Scene), bassist Josh Abrams (Bonnie Prince Billy) and instrumentalist Stuart Bogie of Brooklyn's world renowned Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Great Lake Swimmers - Lost Channels (Nettwerk) ................................................................... Featuring a homespun blend of acoustic instruments, rural soundscapes, and wistful vocals, Great Lake Swimmers are led by songwriter/vocalist Tony Dekker. With a voice that summons ghosts from times past, it is capable of conveying heartache and comfort all in the space of a single phrase. Dekker chooses to record in old churches, community halls, abandoned grain silos and rural locations. It's easy to hear why. PJ Harvey & John Parish - A Woman A Man Walked By (Island) ................................................................... A Woman A Man Walked By has been described by journalist John Harris as 'mischievous, deadly serious, elegant and poetic, and possessed of a brutal power: it is doubtful that you will hear a record as brimming with creative brio and musical invention this year'. A Woman A Man Walked By is the follow up to Harvey and Parish's previous collaboration Dance Hall At Louse Point. An accomplished producer and composer, John has recorded numerous soundtracks and has worked with artists including Eels and Giant Sand as well as Harvey. Shawn Lee - Soul in the Hole (Ubiquity) ................................................................... Featuring guest appearances from Paul Butler (The Bees), Nicole Willis, Darondo, Karime Kendra, Fanny Franklin, and Kirin Lee, this album is an homage to styles from the late 60s to the 80s. Touching on everything from northern soul and crackly Southern ballads to cosmic funk and disco styled sounds, "Soul In The Hole" is a chronological nod to the past mixed with a touch of the present. RIYL: Breakestra, Orgone, Darondo. An endless well of essential music. Malajube - Labyrinthes (Dare to Care) ................................................................... Malajube is a Canadian pop-rock quintet that in 2004 quietly impressed hungry listeners with their debut record Le Compte Complet and has drawn a wide amount of praise for their second album Trompe-l'Oeil, springing out of the already artistically rich local music scene, with their unique and original sound. Other Lives - s/t (TBD) ................................................................... Based in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the band has been playing music together for over five years, but only recently adopted the name Other Lives. With an organic, orchestrated sound that incorporates elements of Progressive Rock, Folk and classical music, Other Lives draws its inspiration from a similarly wide array of sources: from historical events to the landscape in which the members grew up. Recorded with producer Joey Waronker (Beck, the Eels, Lisa Germano) and engineer Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Outkast, Beck). Peter, Bjorn and John - Living Thing (Almost Gold) ................................................................... There was always going to be chatter as to how Peter Bjorn and John would follow up their album Writer's Block, a true pop phenomenon. Bolstered by the band's production, the first taster of the album, 'Lay it Down', was a delightfully off-kilter riposte, a jaunty flying-V in the faces of people who thought they'd had the band all figured out, with a harsh, treated vocal lifelessly intoning the threatening refrain before abruptly giving way to an anthemic, full-bodied singalong. The rest of the album walks a similar tightrope of melody and mayhem. Living Thing pulses with life, it is bursting at the seams with energy and vitality, and shot through with warmth and excitement and wonder. Seeland - Tomorrow Today (Loaf) ................................................................... Seeland was formed by Tim Felton (ex-Broadcast) and Billy Bainbridge (ex-Plone) in the winter of 2004 amid the fallout from Birmingham's Retro Futurist Electronic scene, a group of musicians and artists inspired by Space-Age Pop, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, legendary producer Joe Meek, and eccentric '60s library music. Staff Benda Bilili - Tres Tres Fort (Crammed) ................................................................... Staff Benda Bilili are a group of paraplegic street musicians who live around the grounds of the zoo in Kinshasa, Congo. The band's mesmerising rumba-rooted grooves, overlaid with vibrant vocals, remind you at times of Cuban nonchalance, at other times of the Godfather of Soul himself. You can hear echoes of old-school rhythm and blues, then reggae, then no-holds barred funk. Four senior singer/guitarists sitting on tricycles, occasionally dancing on the floor of the stage, arms raised in joyful supplication, are the core or the band, backed by a younger, all-acoustic rhythm section pounding out tight beats. Over the top of this are weird, infectious guitar-like solos performed by a 17 year-old prodigy on a one-string electric lute he designed and built himself out of a tin can! Thunderheist - s/t (Big Dada) ................................................................... Who could have predicted that an accidental MP3 upload would birth a phenomenon? Never having met in person, but electronically connected through common musical friends, producer Grahm Zilla and Nigerian-born rapper/vocalist Isis began Thunderheist to throw a wrench into static Hip Hop conventions and explore their love for the dancefloor. 13 tracks including the singles 'Sweet 16' and 'Nothing 2 Step 2'. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz (Interscope) ................................................................... It's Blitz! signals both a glance backward and a step forward for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Nick Zinner's vintage Arp - the same model used on records by The Cars, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk, contributes atmospheric washes, disco wiggles, and New Wave melodrama. The first single, "Zero," combines all these elements to create a dance-floor anthem that sings directly to the listener. "We've got a death grip on the adolescent way of feeling things," Karen O says. "It's almost feels like a John Hughes 80s movie." VA - We Just Call It Roulette, Vol. 2 (Russian) ................................................................... This CD has 14 tracks from 14 bands, some local and some that are as far away as Austria and Africa, with styles ranging from traditional Zimbabwean music to heavy metal. Each of these tracks was recorded at local studio-deluxe, Russian Recording. The amazing artwork has to be seen to be believed. Only 500 copies exist. Featuring Child Bite, Medusa, Everthus the Deadbeats, Lafcadio, Sheasby Matiure and the Mbira Queens, Defiano Ohio, Kentucky Nightmare, Trio in Stereo, Sump Pumps, Valina, Beyond Things, Prizzy Prizzy Please and a gorgeous cover of King Harvest for Evan Farrell done by the Cover Band (pre-WESH).
