JUST ANNOUNCED: Landlocked Music is pleased as punch to present a FREE instore performance from Lou Barlow before Dinosaur Jr's soon to be legendary show at the Bluebird on Friday, April 10th. Barlow has been an integral force in some of the most successful and influential underground bands of the last two decades - Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion. Come out and rock out! Attention Wilco fans! As you are well aware, the band is playing at IU Auditorium on 4/16. And you are probably also aware that they have a new concert DVD coming out on Record Store Day (4/18). But did you know that a screening of said movie is happening at IU's Whittenberger Auditorium next Wednesday, 4/15 at 8pm? Its true. We have tickets to give away to the screening - first 2 people to physically stop into Landlocked and ask will each win a pair. And yes, at the screening they are giving away tickets to the concert. Become a Wilco-holic! Record Store Day (April 18th 2009!) is coming together quite deliciously! Check out the RSD portion of our website to keep up with the exclusive releases for the day. At Landlocked we will be hosting instore performances from Death Vessel, DM Stith, DJ sets from Zero Boys frontman Paul-Z and the Mayor of Bloomington Mark Kruzan, limited edition on-site screen-printing, food and drink and even more to be announced in next week's update. Check it. We can't blow your minds too much, because there is still plenty of goodness for THIS week. Stop in Landlocked and pre-order Sonic Youth's The Eternal (out on June 9) on CD or 2xLP, and you'll also receive access to an advanced stream of the album (beginning April 28), a limited-edition live LP, exclusive MP3s and a poster. Pre-ordering is the only way to receive the live vinyl on release day! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 4/7/2009 ................................................................... Arcade Fire - Miroir Noir DVD (Merge) ................................................................... "Miroir Noir" follows Arcade Fire through the making and touring of their 2007 album "Neon Bible," documenting the band in the studio, and the making of promotional films and videos. Also features live footage and a few short films made on the road. Directed by Vincent Morisset, who was responsible for the interactive video for the song "Neon Bible" and for the band's web design. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns (Astralwerks) ................................................................... One of the most dynamic and intriguing performers out of the UK, Bat For Lashes (aka Natasha Khan) returns with her dazzling second album, featuring guest spots by Yeasayer and Scott Walker. Bat For Lashes' previous album Fur & Gold was nominated for Mercury & Brit Prizes in the UK and a Plug Award in the US, and has received accolades from Thom Yorke, Bjork, Spin Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, The NY Times, GQ, Nylon and Blender. Black Dice - Repo (Paw Tracks) ................................................................... This Brooklyn trio has never worked harder at crafting a set of concise, sonically battering, or flat-out bizarre tunes than on this collection of fringe-surfing tone bombs. Yet a new roadhouse blues band philosophy has simultaneously emerged, allowing the group to loosen up and casually toss off a record packed with blurry hooks and zoomed in riffs. "Repo" irreverently mulches the sounds and images of radio, TV, and Internet into a fertile compost pile squirming with new, raw life. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - vs Children (Tomlab) ................................................................... Owen Ashworth's fifth album strays from the strictly electronic instrumentation and trademark Casiotone keyboards of his earlier recordings. Instead, it's built largely on the sounds of piano, organ, Mellotron, and acoustic percussion, both live and sampled. Guest appearances by Quever, Julie Lispector, and The Donkeys. Despite the guests and shift in instrumentation, "Vs. Children" feels just as warm and intimate as the first album. It also marks the continuing evolution of an idiosyncratic singer, songwriter, and producer. Chain and the Gang feat. Ian Svenonius - Down with Liberty (K) ................................................................... Ian Svenonius (Make Up, Nation Of Ulysses, Weird War) and his band have created sing alongs on this record; a call and response in the tradition of gospel tunes, work favorites, and the girl groups and vocal aggregates that once dotted the corners of the Mid-Atlantic states. This record is simple and profound, the way a pebble on the beach is. There are no song cycles, sample beats, sequencers, or baby pictures of the artist as a tot. Catch em live next week at Russian Recording! Crystal Antlers - Tentacles (Touch & Go) ................................................................... "Tentacles" finds the Antlers exploding through the unclaimed space between 60s garage toughs like the Music Machine and the Misunderstood, red-eyed noiseniks like Guru Guru and Les Rallizes Denudes, and the mechanized motor soul of "Osmium"-era Parliament. It's an album that functions as an organism - it breathes, it sleeps, it wakes up hungry and ready to chase something down. Ramblin Jack Elliott - A Stranger Here (Anti) ................................................................... Working with producer Joe Henry (Bettye LaVette, Solomon Burke, Elvis Costello/Allen Toussaint), the 77 year old Elliott sings and plays acoustic guitar, and is backed by a stellar collection of musicians handpicked by Henry, among them Van Dyke Parks and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos). Revered for his interpretive take on traditional American music, Elliott steps out of the country/folk arena that has shaped his legend, 50+ years in the making. Haunting and evocative landscapes crafted by Henry construct a mood that is enhanced by Elliott's world-scarred voice. Together, musician and producer examine a carefully selected number of pre-WWII blues songs in a wholly unique way. Eulogies - Here Anonymous (Dangerbird) ................................................................... Eulogies' songs struggle with broken-down communication, the weight of bad habits, the fear of being alone. That struggle is universal, and it's presented within the music with a directness that's both stark and beautiful. Felice Brothers - Yonder is the Clock (Team Love) ................................................................... The Felice Brothers come to us from the Catskill Mountains where a homegrown sound has been working its way through the bloodlines for generations. Titled with a phrase drawn from the pages of Mark Twain, "Yonder Is The Clock" is teeming with tales of love, death, betrayal, baseball, train stations, phantoms, pandemics, jail cells, rolling rivers, and frozen winter nights. This is music that hasn't lost sight of the history of the land from which it came, and that quality alone makes The Felice Brothers a great American band. I Was a King - s/t (Control Group) ................................................................... The Norwegian band I Was A King is the brainchild of Frode Stromstads. The new album features Serena-Maneesh's Emil Nikolaisen on bass, drums and a co-production credit, alongside guest spots from Sufjan Stevens, Danielson and Ladybug Transistor, among others. But even without "star" contributions, the 15 tracks add up to pleasingly dense, tuneful, and ambitious batch of psychedelic power pop. The layers of sound will likely appeal to fans of Olivia Tremor Control as much as older tastes a la Strawberry Alarm Clock. Teenage Fanclubbers might also want to pay attention; and, after listening to the burnt guitar soloing, you'll understand why Stromstads has Dinosaur Jr. in his Top 8. - Stereogum It Hugs Back - Inside Your Guitar (4AD) ................................................................... Influenced by the intricate songwriting of Wilco, the sound layers of My Bloody Valentine, the pop charm of The Lemonheads, the textures of Sonic Youth, and the DIY aesthetics of the arts and crafts movement. On their sixth album, Matthew Simms' softly spoken vocals turn the captivating guitar licks, rhythms, and feedback fuzz into something wistful, imaginative, and charming. Joker's Daughter - The Last Laugh (Team Love) ................................................................... The debut by UK-based Joker's Daughter features vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Helena Costas. This fresh folk-pop excursion reveals new facets of the renowned artist and producer Danger Mouse, who collaborates with Costas throughout. The result is an intoxicating, disorienting blend; folk music from some strange, timeless, uncharted dream world. Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care (Domino) ................................................................... This is the duo's third album, and the title is a reference to a short film by Norman McLaren, the pioneering Oscar-winning animator and electronic composer, who was fond of direct film animation (the technique of physically manipulating or painting on film frame by frame) and stop-start animation. His meticulousness is much like the band's process of composing and sequencing their music. There's a measured restraint that's rarely employed in modern pop music and it's the precision and restraint in the arrangements that serves to magnify what is there. And what is there is exceptional. Micachu & The Shapes - Jewellery (Rough Trade) ................................................................... 21-year old Mica Levi, a.k.a. Micachu, presents "an ear-bashing of crazy paving beats, junk shop punk, electronic drones, and deceptively mellifluous bedsit pop" - The Times. Equally at home making brilliant leftfield pop as she is composing for orchestras and making mix tapes that mash up dub step, grime, garage, and pop, it comes as no surprise that Micachu's debut is the aural equivalent of a chameleon: a multi-colored, multi-layered conflation of ground breaking sounds and ideas. Bob Mould - Life and Times (Anti) ................................................................... 30 years since the formation of Husker Du and 20 years since their explosive demise and the subsequent release of his first lauded solo effort Workbook - called a "masterpiece" by critics - Bob Mould is marking anniversaries with an album filled with self-reflection and an unflinching examination of the world around him. Standouts tracks highlight an artist completing a cycle decades in the making, his talent undiminished, his perspective acute. Bob Mould is one of the most influential musicians of the alternative rock era, first for his early work with Husker Du, followed by the college rock-defining pop of Sugar and finally for his solo albums, which quieted Mould's previous ire to reveal his fine songwriting in a new light and allowed an introspective glimpse into the inner workings of an evolving artist. Superchunk - Leaves in the Gutter EP (Merge) ................................................................... After seven years without a CD release, Superchunk return with a five-track EP just in time for their 20th birthday and their upcoming performance at Coachella. This release is in the mold of their early 7-inches and between album EP masterpieces. Four new tracks plus last year's vinyl-only hit single, "Misfits & Mistakes". Richard Swift - The Atlantic Ocean (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Celebrated for his lo-fi, experimental melanges saluting genres from doo-wop to lush American pop, Swift adds jaunty synthesizers and Motown soul to make this, his fourth release, his most danceable record to date. RIYL: Wilco, M. Ward, My Morning Jacket, Ryan Adams. The Thermals - Now We Can See (Kill Rock Stars) ................................................................... Thermal mainstays Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster recorded Now We Can See as a duo. Foster performed all drums and bass (and sang for the first time on a Thermals record), while Harris sang lead and played guitar. They returned to Oregon City with John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Polyphonic Spree) producing. The result is the widest, loudest piece that The Thermals have yet unleashed. Lyrically, they have managed to move past religion and politics, yet remain joyously obsessed with love and death. Though the subject matter may be dark at times, the lyrics, as well as the melodies, remain as catchy and uplifting as ever. The Veils - Sun Gangs (Rough Trade) ................................................................... Their third album, following a very busy period. They recorded a 10-track album with Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker, British Sea Power) and Bernard Butler (Suede, Duffy, Black Kids), and filmed video accompaniments to their music with Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds). Whitest Boy Alive - Rules (Asound) ................................................................... Sophomore release from the Berlin-based band featuring Erland Oye, formerly with Kings Of Convenience. The Whitest Boy Alive has slowly developed into a band without any programmed elements. Of course, one might notice, that most of the songs on Rules have one thing in common: move your body! Less Indie Pop and more Disco, Rules is both a step forward for the band AND a look back at their influences. Neil Young - Fork in the Road (Reprise) ................................................................... Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Neil Young is stirring things up again. This time he is rolling on down the road not only with an auto-centric concept album but with his own electric ride. Fork In The Road, whose largely ecocar themed songs he debuted in concert during the past year, will get a promotional push from the 1959 Lincoln Continental Young has converted to hybrid technology and which he plans to drive to Washington, D.C. With Fork In The Road as current as today's headlines, the controversial and mad-as-hell Neil Young is still rockin' the free world and once more is taking the road less traveled.
