NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 4/28/2009 ................................................................... Ape School - s/t (Counter) ................................................................... Michael Johnson arrived in Philly a swamp-ape from the Florida Panhandle to lead music technology studies at a downtown arts university. Instead, he discovered in its hallowed halls the derelict crown jewel of archaic analog electronics with which he would forge his image of the Ape School. Armed with the Moog Modular synth he helped revive - just the fourth born and installed by the hands of Robert Moog 40 years earlier in 1965 - Johnson conjures original songs from beyond his prior tenures in Kurt Heasley's Lilys, and Sub Pop's Holopaw, using the Modular to weave lush motorik dream-sound throughout dynamic instrumentation and his distinct croon. Black Crowes - Warpaint Live (Fontana) ................................................................... The Black Crowes are one of the all-time great live rock bands. Their shows are legendary and regularly sell out in record time wherever in the world they play. This new live 2CD was recorded last year on the tour in support of their new studio album "Warpaint". It features the whole of the "Warpaint" album in extended live versions plus a mixture of previously unreleased cover versions and some of their own classics. Samantha Crain - Songs in the Night (Ramseur) ................................................................... Songs In the Night is the account of this excavation for Samantha Crain, a 22-year-old Oklahoma-based songwriter. It plays out to wander confidently in the badlands where abrasive, jangly indie rock and smooth, whispery folk meet. It chronicles the fear she saw in herself and those around her, that assumed embracing health and clarity would, in turn, destroy every particle of poetry and each grain of ingenuity dwelling within the artist. Crain's distinct voice presents each song with an unfeigned fervor as it rises and falls over the panorama painted by her band's roots-infused, fertile arrangements. Crocodiles - Summer of Hate (Fat Possum) ................................................................... San Diego duo featuring former members of The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. "The deconstructed Punk duo parlay their appreciation for melody into a kind of modern-day Suicide, complete with a minimalistic Rock sound saddled with doomed electronics." A darker, more caustic brand of shoegaze rock, complete with feedback, drum machines and pedals galore. As one onlooker remarked, "If (Factory Records) Tony Wilson were alive, he'd sign 'em - San Diego City Beat Diamond Watch Wrists - Ice Capped at Both Ends (Warp) ................................................................... One of those special musical moments when artists serendipitously collide and combine their efforts to produce something inspired and unprovoked. Scott Heron, aka Prefuse 73, crossed paths with Zach Hill, the drummer of Hella, and the two ended up collaborating. Both psychedelic and personal, free and driven, complex and accessible, these songs are soaked in multi-leveled vocal harmonies atop atmospheric production and forward-moving drums. The product of two great musicians taking full advantage of circumstance and forging a new sound. Bob Dylan - Together Through Life (Columbia) ................................................................... Together Though Life was prompted by the composition of a new song, "Life Is Hard," which was written for a forthcoming film by French director Oliver Dahan (La Vie En Rose). Bob Dylan's latest studio album was recorded late last year and features 10 new songs including "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'" and "It's All Good." This will be the 46th release from Dylan, following his Platinum album Modern Times which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in 2006. Deluxe 2CD+DVD or 2LP version also available. Free print with purchase! Ben Lee - The Rebirth of Venus (New West) ................................................................... Ben Lee dedicates his 7th album to Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty. A bold move for a man, but Ben recognizes that the strongest feminine qualities "such as compassion, nurturing, creativity, spontaneity, intuition, playfulness, tenderness and warmth are qualities that we all, men and women, need to cultivate." Produced by Brad Wood, who also produced Ben's breakout album Awake Is The New Sleep featuring the international hit "Catch My Disease". Los Straitjackets - Further Adventures of (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Continuing their conquest as the champion luchadores of instrumental Rock. The world renowned kings of Chopsville release one of their most remarkable albums to date. Features 13 tracks of future vintage sounds straight from planet Straitjacket. Each package includes trading cards featuring the secret identities of the band along with information on their superhuman characteristics. Do not succumb to the evil temptations of mediocrity and check out Los Straitjackets' amazing journey to save the world one riff at a time! Men Without Pants - Naturally (Expansion Team) ................................................................... Men Without Pants is Russell Simins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and Dan The Automator (Gorillaz, Peeping Tom, Lovage, Deltron 3030). Special guests in the band and studio include Sean Lennon, members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Mooney Suzuki and Cibo Matto among others. "A hail of screaming synths, bad-ass beats & salacious come-ons. For fans of NERD and LCD Soundsystem." - Spin "If Cannonball-era Breeders ever mated with the Black Keys, this is what it would sound like." - Washington Post Merzbannon - s/t LP (Tizona) ................................................................... What do you get when you cross the prolific talents of Japan's "Godfather of Noise" with the Bloomington's own genre-defying juggernaut Racebannon? Twelve inches of unrefined fury so severe that bandages and gauze pads should be supplied with each record. Merzbow takes Racebannon's celebrated rock-opera "Satan's Kickin Yr Dick In" and reshapes it into 20 minutes of stunning auditory fierceness. Another delicacy for Merzbow and Racebannon fans alike to savor. Thee Oh Sees - Help (In the Red) ................................................................... New release from this outfit led by John Dwyer, formerly of Coachwhips. Their 6th album - albeit in different incarnations, under several different names (OCS, the Oh Sees) with several different sounds. Formed in the wake of his more volatile commitments, Thee Oh Sees started as an extension of Dwyer's softer side. Their early recordings were somber and beautiful. Last year, Thee Oh Sees made an unexpected turn, delivering their wildest, weirdest, hardest-rocking record yet with The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In. Now, TOS have followed it with an even wilder, more hard-rocking record. Themselves - The Free Houdini (Anticon) ................................................................... Ten years after the release of their seminal debut, six years since their last LP, Themselves return in 2009 with not one, but two full-length albums. The first is The Free Houdini: one part aggressive rap mixtape, one part posse reunion record that wrangles all seven original members of the Anticon collective - and several distinguished guests - to reaffirm the crew's place in hip-hop history. Young Love - One of Us (Island) ................................................................... Something happened in the intervening years since you last heard Young Love. Sure, Dan Keyes is still masterminding music that sets dancefloors ablaze, but since the release of Too Young To Fight It, there's been a shift, a subtle but assured transmogrification in Keyes that manifests itself in each carefully chosen chord, each deliberately delivered lyric. From the sound of One of Us, what Keyes wanted musically and lyrically was a record that is at once energetic and contemplative, moving audiences seamlessly from a dancefloor packed with strangers to a room filled with friends. VA - Playing for Change - Songs Around the World (Concord) ................................................................... A great showcase for just what incredible music is being made worldwide. Utilizing mobile audio/video techniques, Playing for Change records musicians outdoors in cities worldwide. They've travelled from post-Katrina New Orleans to post-apartheid South Africa, from the remote beauty of the Himalayas to the religious diversity of Jerusalem. Their talents are captured in myriad environments: under the sun and beneath the streetlights... in public parks, plazas and promenades... in doorways, on cobblestone streets, amid hilly pueblos. Their performances are subsequently combined in allowing them to collaborate - albeit separated by hundreds, or even thousands, of miles.
