NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 5/12/2009 ................................................................... The Antlers - Hospice (self) ................................................................... Hospice is an unusual record that flows with the pace and structure of a novel. The songs are drenched in a post-rock haze, covering Explosions In The Sky-esque triumph with a shoegaze blanket - all while still retaining the shape and momentum of a pop song. The vocals remain an important focal point of Hospice - Silberman blends the falsetto of Jeff Buckley & Antony Hegarty with the delivery of Arcade Fire's Win Butler. Lyrically, Hospice is more literary as Silberman narrates a nightmarish story of illness, dysfunction, death and ultimately liberation - drawing inspiration from the likes of Raymond Carver, Leonard Michaels and Sylvia Plath. "One of the most beautiful and moving works I've heard in a long, long time. Just astonishing." -NPR's All Songs Considered Boxcutter - Arecibo Message (Planet Mu) ................................................................... Since his debut single "Brood" was released on Hotflush in 2005, he has made waves in the dub scene. Boxcutter's continued support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs (of the BBC's Radio One) ensures a loyal following everywhere he plays. To give the album an organic texture, Boxcutter ditched the computer sequencing and instead employed analog synths, delays, and guitar pedals. Arecibo Message features more guitars and bass than his previous records, with influences ranging from Hendrix to two-step garage such as Wideboys-- a real trip of an album. Bricolage - s/t (Slumberland) ................................................................... The symbiotic relationship between Glasgow and an indefinable, distinct breed of extraordinary Pop is the object of limitless fascination. Virtually from the moment the legendary Orange Juice transformed the once barren Scottish metropolis into a wellspring of tuneful, literate, joyous music, new bands have continued to flow from its environs. From the early-'80s explosion that begat Altered Images, The Bluebells, The Pastels, and many others, to latter-day heirs such as Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits Belle & Sebastian, and Franz Ferdinand, the city is as synonymous with the abstract notion of indie as Detroit is with the Motown sound or New York with early punk. Crystal Method - Divided by Night (Ingrooves) ................................................................... Divided By Night marks the fourth record by Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland, the electronic music pioneers known as Crystal Method.Ê Divided By Night is nothing short of a masterpiece and easily the duo's most inventive and accomplished album to date.Ê Includes high caliber guests such as Matisyahi, Warfield, Metric front-woman Emily Haines, New Order bassist Peter Hook and Samantha Maloney formerly of Hole and Peaches. Steve Earle - Townes (New West) ................................................................... "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." - Steve Earle. Steve's new album Townes, is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy Award winning album Washington Square Serenade. The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle's friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. 2CD version includes a disc of acoustic versions. Catch him live on June 26th at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater! Jeremy Enigk - OK Bear (567) ................................................................... In the 90s, Jeremy Enigk s on-again off-again relationship with Sunny Day Real Estate (and the short lived The Fire Theft) cast him as a sort of enigmatic emo-rock icon. Overused genre classifications and debatable perceptions aside, there s a depth to Enigk s work that confirms his undeniable musical contribution. 96 s Return Of The Frog Queen stands as a standard of grandiose chamber pop. So it s no surprise that World Waits, a mere two years old, is already becoming an intelligent pop music classic in its ghostly transcendence. The simple fact that Enigk s solo work has kept the rapt attention of diehard fans in an oversaturated media wasteland with a mere two releases over the course of an entire decade is a testament to the depth of Enigk s craft. Now he's back to round out his releases with the playfully titled OK Bear, the minimalist rock combo answer to his dramatic orchestral discography. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks 12" (Warp) ................................................................... "Two Weeks" is the lead single from Grizzly Bear's upcoming LP Veckatimest, and on it's own it's a pretty nice slice of indie-pop. Well, Fred Falke decided to take that and turn it into an updated version of an 80s new wave cut (you can definitely hear little hints of When In Rome and Pet Shop Boys in here). It's big and dramatic, and there's something about the way Daniel Rossen's falsetto lays on top of those big major chords that feels like summertime. Mark Kozelek - Lost Verses Live (Caldo Verde) ................................................................... Recorded live during Kozelek's 2007 and 2008 acoustic tours with Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters guitarist Phil Carney as accompaniment, this 14 song set features songs primarily chosen from the Sun Kil Moon catalog but also includes solo and Red House Painter's material. The album was recorded in intimate, seated settings such as The First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia, The Williamsburg Music Hall in Brooklyn, The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the Aladdin Theatre in Portland, finding Mark at his best, relaxed and interacting with the appreciative audience. Maximo Park - Quicken the Heart (Warp) ................................................................... Third album from the British Indie rockers. Rarely has a record been so aptly named. A skyscraping monument of dreamy synths, galvanizing Rock 'N' Roll and buoyant Pop, the album follows in the footsteps of their Mercury Prize-nominated 2005 debut A Certain Trigger and their chart-busting 2007 follow-up Our Earthly Pleasures. Quicken The Heart was produced by Oz icon Nick Launay and is yet another astonishing step forward for the band, and a testament to just how far they have come. One of the only bands to avoid the laddish cliches of the age, they have maintained their assault on the mainstream whilst retaining every ounce of their independence. Crafting an album of ingenious hooks and memorable lyrics that search for romance in everyday life. Meat Puppets - Sewn Together (MRI) ................................................................... On May 12th, 2009, the pioneering rock band Meat Puppets will release their new studio album Sewn Together. Recorded at the Saltmine in Phoenix, AZ in winter 2009, the album features the Kirkwood brothers, Chris and Curt, with drummer Ted Marcus. It's twelve new songs of pure rock, country and a bit of punk attitude.Ê The Meat Puppets later gained significant exposure when the Kirkwood brothers served as guest musicians on Nirvana's MTV unplugged performance in 1993. The Wooden Birds - Magnolia (Barsuk) ................................................................... The Wooden Birds is the new project of American Analog Set frontman Andrew Kenny. He returned home to Austin from Brooklyn to make Magnolia the album of his career, featuring members of acclaimed bands Sparklehorse, Ola Podrida and Lymbyc System.Ê Despite the involvement of new musical partners, creating a much more vocal-and percussion-driven sound than the keyboard-and-vibes-hypnotics of American Analog Set, his voice and ear for melody and rhythm are unmistakable on Magnolia. VA - Rocky Mountain Low : The Colorado Musical Underground of the Late 1970s 2LP+CD (Hyperpycnal) ................................................................... Rocky Mountain Low is an insanely great insider's view of the Colorado underground scene of the late 70s. We'd never even heard of half the bands here, but Joseph Pope was an active participant, and along with Dalton Rasmussen he pulled together a great set of unreleased nuggets from demos, rehearsal tapes & whatnot. Like lotsa scenes in their early days, the sounds here are heterogenous - 60s style Pop, hard Garage, weird experimentalism and Brit-damaged lunge are all part of the mix, just as they were in the day. The book included is a great blend of history, attitude, crappy-looking fliers and the best picture of Jello Biafra you will ever see in this lifetime. Every town deserves this kind of deep investigation. - Byron Coley & Thurston Moore The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ...................................................................
