What about our fancy and every growing digital download store at http://landlocked.thinkindie.com/ ? Hear about the amazing Deerhunter / Dan Deacon / No Age show happening this summer? Details below... but for now, new music: ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/2/2009 ................................................................... Jeff Buckley - Grace Around the World (Sony) ................................................................... Nearly 15 years ago, the world was introduced to a young singer from New York named Jeff Buckley. His debut album Grace became one of the most acclaimed and influential albums of his generation. To promote the album, Jeff and his band embarked a seemingly un-ending tour - taking them all over the globe from 1994-96. Because the album had no "hit single", Jeff was constantly tinkering with his setlists - both on stage and on TV. He therefore performed almost every track from Grace at least once in his many appearances on local broadcasts around the globe. Now the very best of those performances have been tracked down and compiled into the definitive audio/visual document of the Grace world tour. Elvis Costello - Secret, Profane & Sugarcane (Hear) ................................................................... The record was produced by T Bone Burnett during a 3-day session in Nashville. Joining Costello were Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass), some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, Bluegrass and beyond. The album includes 10 previously unrecorded songs. "Sulphur to Sugarcane" and "The Crooked Line", were co-written with T Bone Burnett while, "I Felt The Chill" marks Costello's second collaboration with Loretta Lynn. Costello revisits 2 songs from his catalogue in string band style. Both songs were originally written for Johnny Cash. Eels - Hombre Lobo (Vagrant) ................................................................... Seventh studio album from the ever-changing project led by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett (aka E). Hombre Lobo was recorded entirely at E's studio in Los Angeles with Koool G Murder (bass, keyboards and guitar) and Knuckles (drums and percussion). Features the first single 'Fresh Blood'. Lee Fields & the Expressions - My World (Truth & Soul) ................................................................... Lee Fields is a bona-fide, 100%, unadulterated, pure, gut-bucket soul singer. While the crate-digging funk and soul community bestowed "legendary" status upon him due to his undeniably solid series of rare 7" singles recorded and released on his own independent labels in the 70s, he's never been one to sit in a dusty corner. New York label/production team Truth & Soul, are ready to bring him to light with a brand new album of beat-heavy, deep soul ballads that will show soul-revivalists the world over what real soul is. After his rediscovery in the mid 90s, his faithful have featured him on a slew on singles, a full-length on Desco Records entitled "Let's Get It On', a full-length on Soul Fire entitled "Problems", and on Sharon Jones's critically acclaimed album, "Naturally". Girl in a Coma - Trio B.C. (Blackheart) ................................................................... Girl in a Coma, hailing from the Lone Star State, formed when best friends Jenn Alva and Phanie Diaz met in Jr. High School art class over a mutual love of The Smiths, Nirvana, and skipping school. All they needed was a singer. Enter Nina Diaz, Phanie's then 12-year old little sister. Nina blew them away with her mesmerizing vocals, a powerful voice some critics have compared to Bjork, Patsy Cline, and the band's hero, Morrissey himself. Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King (RCA) ................................................................... Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the groupÕs "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive grooves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors MooreÕs saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet... Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem." Iggy Pop - Preliminaires (Astralwerks) ................................................................... Iggy Pop takes on the language of romance and puts a decidedly French twist on his new album. Preliminaires, which translates to "foreplay", highlights another facet of the Iggy Pop persona, focusing more on jazz arrangements and the distinctive, rich baritone heard on classics like "Nightclubbing" and his duet with French legend Francoise Hardy on the song "I'll Be Seeing You". Iggy even sings one song in French, a cover of jazz standard "Autumn Leaves", a song widely associated with French legends Yves Montand and Edith Piaf. Other titles include New Orleans influenced "King Of The Dogs", and "How Insensitive", a jazzy bossanova standard composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. There are also more raucous moments like the swamp-rock stylings of "Nice To Be Dead". J Dilla - Jay Stay Paid (Nature) ................................................................... Jay Stay Paid is a 25 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, "J$P" also offers a few guest vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought (The Roots), DOOM, M.O.P., Blu and more. Executive produced by Dilla's mom Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey. Musical supervisor, Pete Rock: "This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old disks & DATs. It's mind blowing... this is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy." Murder By Death / Amanda Palmer - split 7" (Tent Show) ................................................................... Local heroes Murder By Death are releasing the third of 7 records in a 7" series where they trade covering songs with other bands they know. The second 7" will feature MBD performing Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls "Another Year" and Amanda Palmer performing MBD's "3 Men Hanging". Limited to 1000 copies. Pisces - A Lovely Sight (Numero Group) ................................................................... 1969's A Lovely Sight, Pisces' only attempt at an LP, never made wax; but the fuzz guitar phrases and tambourine shuffle of "Dear One" instantly illustrate the band's woozy realm. Deeper inside, bass scales borrowed from Sgt. Pepper give way to Who moves wrecked by bad fidelity and harsh intrusions of found sounds. Jefferson Airplane's swirled, lysergic Haight Street utopia melds with the urban narcosis of the Velvet Underground's East Village. Rancid - Let the Dominoes Fall (Epitaph) ................................................................... A ready-made punk classic that'll take its place beside "And Out Come The Wolves" as a touchstone of the genre. The new songs show a lyrical depth perhaps best shown in two tracks that center the album, "Civilian Ways" and "The Bravest Kids". Punk has often seen the world as "us vs. them", but with these songs - a sensitive portrait of a returning serviceman and a loving tribute to those who serve - Rancid show an empathy for working Americans that recalls Springsteen or Petty. Wax Poetics magazine - #35 June/July (Wax Poetics) ................................................................... On the covers, front: Roger Troutman, back: Booker T. Jones. Contents: Editor's Letter, Re:Discovery, El Michels Affair, Broken Keys, STS9, Glass Candy, Lord Finesse, Ralph MacDonald, Booker T. Jones, Byron Lee, Mahavishnu Orchestra, E.Z. Mike Simpson, Def Jef, Roger Troutman, Analog Out." 104 pages, full color, high gloss, incredibly well done & essential. 35th issue of this U.S.-based production. VA - Take Me to the Water: Immersion Baptism in Vintage Music and Photography 1890-1950 (Dust to Digital) ................................................................... Making the past present once again, Grammy winners Dust-to-Digital unveil what could easily be seen as the seventh part of their acclaimed Goodbye Babylon box set. Take Me to the Water is a 96-page hardcover book which contains photographs from the collection of Jim Linderman, a scholar of 20th Century self-taught American art and a noted collector of outsider art, early American folk art, and daguerreotype photographs of even earlier American folk art portraits. Also included is a compact disc featuring rare, vintage songs and sermons recorded between 1924-1940 and an introductory essay by Luc Sante.
