NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/9/2009 ................................................................... Aggrolites - IV (Hellcat) ................................................................... The Aggrolites have shared stages with Social Distortion, Madness, Rancid, Flogging Molly, 311, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Dropkick Murphys, The Vandals, Against Me, Aquabats, Hepcat, Skatalites, Prince Buster, and Derrick Morgan. Here, they offer their brand of funky old-school ska and reggae, lovingly representing the classic sounds of 70s Jamaica to a generation that has never heard of Studio One. This is their most accomplished set yet, with more soulful settings to feature singer Jesse Wagner's Motown-inflected voice. Black Meteoric Star - s/t (DFA) ................................................................... The latest project by longtime DFA alumni Gavin Russom. Black Meteoric Star is inspired by equal parts Euro-disco, wonky early electronic body music from America's Midwest, and a fascination with the outer reaches of global Psychedelic Rock. CD now, three 12"s spread throughout the summer. British Sea Power - Man of Aran (Rough Trade) ................................................................... "Man Of Aran" is a powerful and provocative dramatized documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty. In a series of startling black and white sequences, the film presents daily life on the inhospitable Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland. This is the accompanying soundtrack. Busdriver - Jhelli Beam (Anti) ................................................................... Both smart and smartass, theatrical without being pompous, and, as always, funny. BD's breath-defying flow teeters precariously on top of samples of classical music, jazz drumming, and proggy guitar parts, without ever losing sight of the electronic music that helped define his sound. Mindfully engaging and booty shaking at the same time. A wholly unique take on what an underground hip-hop album should be. RIYL: Animal Collective, Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio. Cheap Time - Woodland Drive 7" (In the Red) ................................................................... Two brand new studio tracks from Nashville, TN's favorite pop punk glam bubblegum band. Snotty, catchy ditties informed by Sparks, The Quick, Milk 'n' Cookies, and early Kinks that'll tide you over until this band unleashes their next full-length. The single comes in a handsome, Fontana-esque picture sleeve. Cosmos - Jar of Jam Ton of Bricks (Happy Jack Rock) ................................................................... The latest collaboration project from Robert Pollard comes with a bit of a twist: Pollard hooked up with another indie rock icon, Richard Davies (The Moles, Cardinal), to form the band Cosmos. To round out the ensemble, Davies enlisted some of his Massachusetts merry men to assist with the music, including David Minehan (The Neighborhoods) and Malcom Travis (Human Sexual Response, Sugar). The vocal duties are split between the two heavyweights: Pollard takes lead on 8 songs, Davies on four. Deerhunter - Rainwater Cassette Exchange (Kranky) ................................................................... This is not some stop-gap release between albums, or mere leftovers from their most recent Microcastle album, but an all new session. The band loves the EP format and thinks it does not get the respect it deserves. Hell, some bands arguably work best in the EP format, think Cocteau Twins or My Bloody Valentine, and now maybe we should add Deerhunter to that list. That's certainly not to say their albums aren't great, but with 2007's Fluorescent Grey EP and this new one, a lucid argument can be made that minute for minute, and hook for hook, their two EP's can't be matched for visceral energy and pop smarts. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca (Domino) ................................................................... The follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed and Domino debut "Rise Above". Their fifth release is a big rock album by design. Its idiosyncratic and sincere take on popular music is reminiscent of David Byrne with whom Dirty Projectors collaborated on "Knotty Pine" for the 2009 compilation "Dark Was The Night". In many ways, group leader David Longstreth could be seen as this generation's answer to Byrne, a distinctive torchbearer of labyrinthine song arrangements that go down easy. Headdress - Lunes (No Quarter) ................................................................... The 2nd album by this Texas psych duo. "Lunes" was written in the desert, but recorded during an endless NYC winter, resulting in a dark meditation on Americana. It's the blues shaped by the avant compositions of La Monte Young and Dylan Carlson. It's drone rooted deep in the American tradition. Vinyl is limited to 1000 copies. RIYL: drone (Earth, Growing) and modern psychedelic (Brightblack Morning Light). Liechtenstein - Survival Strategies In A Modern World (Slumberland) ................................................................... The Swedish trio of Renee, Naemi, and Elin make waves with their unique take on the girl-group post-punk sound of early-80s groups like The Au Pairs and Kleenex. This 9-song mini-LP not only delivers the spooky harmonies and loping basslines that earned their singles such critical attention, but they also stretch out into realms only hinted at before. The band not only gives Love Is All a run for their money in the Swedish post-punk revival department, but they can also fit right in alongside labelmates The Pains of Being Pure at Heart in delivering manic pop thrills. Rhett Miller - s/t (Shout Factory) ................................................................... Critically acclaimed songwriter and Old 97's frontman's new album will take fans on an up-close-and-personal journey through love, loss and redemption, set to the kind of rollicking tunes for which he's known. Rhett was recorded in Dallas and produced by Salim Nourallah, who also produced the latest Old 97's release, 2008's Blame It On Gravity. Also features multi-instrumentalist and producer Jon Brion on guitar and bass, The Apples In Stereo's John Dufilho on drums and Billy Harvey on guitar. Mojo Magazine - Kings of Leon cover ................................................................... In between battling each other and hiding beneath varying levels of facial hair, Kings of Leaon's Followill brothers found time to conquer the world. Plus, Trent Reznor talks mental institutions, self-hatred, rural isolation, MTV theatrics and his new life of sobriety. Revisiting the Sex Pistols US Tour. An interview with Robyn Hitchcock. Remembering the Faces. And much more! Mos Def - The Ecstatic (Downtown) ................................................................... The Ecstatic is the fourth solo album from New York rapper, Mos Def. Features tracks produced by Madlib, Oh No, Mr Flash and J Dilla. Also has guest spots from Slick Rick, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Talib Kweli. Quest for Fire - s/t (Tee Pee) ................................................................... Toronto's Quest For Fire conjure up the original root of psychedelia with the raunch, muscle, and oscillations of Hawkwind and Comets On Fire, and Pink Floyd's sensory panorama, all resting on a simplistic, plodding Spacemen 3 thump... The band's sound comes across fully realized, they possess a signature sound, something a band usually gets to once they're already a couple of records deep. Opening for Pink Mountaintops on Thursday night at Russian Recording! Todd Snider - The Excitement Plan (Yep Roc) ................................................................... Street corner prophet and good time buddy, Todd Snider, has been championing the overlooked and underappreciated for over 15 years. This year he's back with an album that combines social commentary, gypsy recession recovery plan and Soul-Folk in to one unified masterpiece. Self-awareness never sounded so good as Todd and crack sidemen Jim Keltner and Greg Liesz team up with producer Don Was for an album that exemplifies Snider's by-your-wits lifestyle and once-an-age lyricism. Sonic Youth - The Eternal (Matador) ................................................................... Sonic Youth return to an indie label with their 16th album. A supercharged rocker, recalling aspects of the Evol Sister Daydream holy trinity, but with cleaner, louder production and more momentum. With Pavement's Mark Ibold joining on bass, and producer John Agnello back at the controls, "The Eternal" takes the melodic songwriting of "Rather Ripped" and slams down the accelerator pedal. First pressing in a 4-panel wallet with 2 printed inner sleeves. Hyper-deluxe 180g RTI 2LP comes in heavy duty gatefold sleeve. Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Birth (WB) ................................................................... After traversing the galaxy as the road crew for fellow Oklahomans The Flaming Lips, a strange yet melodically intoxicating band has emerged: psych/prog/experimental pop quartet Stardeath And White Dwarfs. One half stoners with nothing to do but roll joints on their King Crimson record sleeves and one-half confetti launchers/ space bubble technicians, Stardeath And White Dwarfs debut their own free-floating circus with their first album. A mind-trip of emotion and mood, recalling everything from 'upper' dance freak-outs to 'downer' Floyd-esque anthems, celebrating a love of all things psychedelic.
