More info here: http://www.recordstoreday.com/NewsItem/1587 ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/16/2009 ................................................................... Beach Boys - Sunflower / Surfs Up [LP reissues] (Capitol) ................................................................... Capitol continue their "From the Capitol Vaults" vinyl series with 11 more classic albums being re-released on vinyl. Sunflower from 1970 was The Beach Boys' 13th studio album, 21st official album release, and their first under their contract with Reprise. Surf's Up was released in 1971, and includes the song Surf's Up which was originally intended for the Smile album. The Builders and the Butchers - Salvation is a Deep Dark Well (Gigantic) ................................................................... Portland-based former Alaskans. On Salvation, the Builders worked with producer Chris Funk from the Decemberists who brought with him a throng of expertise, patience, instruments, and some of the best musicians in Portland. In the vein of the Southern Gothic tales Ryan [Sollee, songwriter] weaves stories of struggle with the usual cast of characters God, the Devil, soldiers, branches, wind, rain and hell fire. City Center - s/t (Type) ................................................................... Fred Thomas has spent most of his life in search of the perfect pop music, first as the frontman of Saturday Looks Good To Me, recording with His Name Is Alive's Warn Defever, as a member of Flashpapr, and now under City Center. Taking cues from the skewed pop music of Arthur Russell on one side, and the most warped moments of Brian Wilson by way of Panda Bear on the other. Thick waves of decomposing electronics and processed instruments crash and fizz beneath Fred's multi-tracked echo/reverb-heavy vocals. Sandwiched in-between 3-minute hazy AM pop marvels are extended ambient experimentations - but unlike the occasionally academic workouts you might expect from Type, these feel organic and distinctly home-brewed. Pop music has rarely sounded quite so open-hearted. Ha Ha Tonka - Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South (Bloodshot) ................................................................... "Novel Sounds is violent, literate, unapologetic Southern rock: With its angelic organ and snarling guitars, "The Outpouring" conjures the Allmans, "Hold My Feet to the Fire" drops gospel harmonies over a boogie-woogie backbeat, and the fingerpicked "Close Every Valve to Your Bleeding Heart" builds from tender to raging without a false note. The Kings of Leon comparisons will be legion." - Spin Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People - Lazers Do (Downtown) ................................................................... Major Lazer is the Grammy-nominated super producer duo of Switch and Diplo, best known for their work with M.I.A and the hit 'Paper Planes', as well as production work for the likes of Santogold, Amanda Blank, Bondo do Role and Tricky. Guns Don't Kill People, Lazers Do is a Reggae and Dancehall explosion just in time for summer, with guest vocals from friends Mapei, Santogold and Amanda Blank; as well as Dancehall mainstays like Nina Sky, Vybz Cartel, Ward 21 and Busy Signal, among many others. Steve Martin - The Crow (Rounder) ................................................................... Comedian, actor, author, and banjo player Steve Martin releases his first musical recording since 1978's number 1 hit "King Tut." This is no novelty record though. It's some of the best banjo music to come down the pike in a long time. The Crow features able assistance from some of Steve's pals, including Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, Tim O'Brien and Mary Black. Martin wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on this album, creating a new body of work that will stand alongside the classics for years to come. Plastic Ono Band - Live Peace in Toronto LP (Capitol) ................................................................... Capitol continue their "From the Capitol Vaults" vinyl series with 11 more classic albums being re-released on vinyl. Live Peace was recorded on September 13, 1969, and includes Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass and future Yes drummer Alan White on drums. The line-up is filled out by Lennon on lead vocals and rhythm guitar and Ono on vocals. Rock Plaza Central - At the Moment of Our Most Needing (Paper Bag) ................................................................... Neutral Milk Hotel and Will Oldham comparisons abound but RCP remain unique. Unlike its predecessor, At the Moment of Our Most Needing has a strong influence from William FaulknerÕs Light In August. Lead singer and accomplished novelist Chris Eaton expounds upon the concept further: ÒThe Faulkner novel is the story of a young woman, eight-and-a-half months pregnant, who leaves home with big dreams and returns in shame, which she wears with pride, as she searches for her lover/her betrayer/the father of her unborn child." Sounds fitfully epic. The Thing - Bag It! CD (Smalltown Superjazz) ................................................................... After four intensive days of recording with Steve Albini, The Thing created Bag It!, a new mastodon of ecstasy music. The Thing is well known for their Free Jazz versions of Rock classics from artists such as PJ Harvey, White Stripes, The Sonics, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lightning Bolt. This time, the band is only doing two rock interpretations, one by Japan's 54 Nude Honeys and one by the The Ex/Muzsiks. Yeti Magazine - Issue 7 (Yeti) ................................................................... Inside the 200-page book: Joe Brainard's remarkable book cover designs, a rare manuscript by Abner Jay detailing his time at the antebellum-fetishizing Stepehen Foster Center in Florida, Grouper talking to Ilyas Ahmed, the life and work of poet Nancy Dupree, comics by clients at Portland's Full Life center for developmentally disabled adults, drawings by J. Bradley Earl of Woods, and the music of Black Twig Pickers and Jack Rose. Plus interviews with artist Jim Woodring, author Lynne Tillman, SF-based band the Nodzzz, author Rudy Wurlitzer, also SF-based band the Wooden Shjips, and fiction by Mimi Lipson. Contributors include Erik Davis, Doug Elliott, Justin Farrar, Ross Simonini, Sara Jaffe, Kevin Elliott, Jesse Studenberg, and Michael Neault. PLUS an 80 minute CD of rare/previously unreleased music.
