Summer is now in full stride... and the 4th of July is just around, well, a couple corners. We will be closed for Independence Day since the city changed the parade route to no longer go in front of our store - bummer! A few items of note: the Steve Earle show at the Buskirk is SOLD OUT! Stop in and grab his latest, Townes, as well as all of the Townes Van Zandt catalog, all on special! We would like to announce with much sadness that on Friday July 3rd will be the FINAL Impossible Shapes performance - drummer Mark Rice is going to grad school at RISD (great for him, bad for us!) so this will be your last chance to enjoy one of B'ton's finest and longest running bands. Come out to Russian Recording Studio and witness this band for the first or last time. Their entire catalog will be available at the nice price. All ages. 21+ to drink. Universal tears of sadness and joy and love. ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/23/2009 ................................................................... David Berman - Portable February (Drag City) ................................................................... Though he's best known for fronting the late, great Silver Jews, sardonic, cerebral country rock isn't David Berman's only talent. He's also a celebrated poet (see 1996's dry Actual Air) and cartoonist whose drawings have popped up in the margins of The Baffler and adorned art-gallery walls. The Portable February, his first published collection of illustrations, suggests that inkwell Berman isn't far removed from plectrum Berman; the instruments of creation may differ, but the same bitterly amused tone suffuses both endeavors. What emerges is a bit droll New Yorker, a bit other-dimensional The Far Side. Budos Band - EP (Daptone) ................................................................... From the vaults of Daptone Records, comes a collection of 6 tracks from the infamous Budos Band. Recorded after the Budos Band I sessions but before those for the second album, this EP is a fascinating glimpse into the group's evolution as musicians and recording artists. Deer Tick - Born on Flag Day (Partisan) ................................................................... Deer Tick's highly anticipated 2nd album, and follow-up to the band's acclaimed debut War Elephant. This release follows two years of extensive touring in sold-out clubs across around the world. Unlike War Elephant, the album features the 3 new members of Deer Tick that songwriter John J. McCauley III recruited to form the current incarnation, and reflects a natural evolution from a singular vision of one songwriter to something greater. Dinosaur Jr - Farm (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... If you were at Dino's triumphant show at the Bluebird this past year, you need no further proof that this band continues to deliver. At times wholly 70s guitar-epic, at times perfect for sitting by a babbling brook with Joni and Neil, "Farm" encompasses Dino's signature palette soaring and distorted guitar, unshakable hooks, honey-rich melodies songs that get into your head and, bouncing around happily, stay there. Double LP comes in beautiful litho-wrapped gatefold jackets. Deluxe limited CD includes a second disc containing four additional songs! Foreign Born - Person to Person (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... An album of dense pop that justifies the band's place among top songsmithing contemporaries like Cass McCombs and James Mercer. But the band is able to bypass the songwriter label by delivering a much more collective sound. African high-life guitars are countered with new wave wash; the sound of a band daring to keep its palette open to most any influence, from U2 to The Feelies. Foreign Born deliver the soundtrack for the backyard BBQ of the ages. Future of the Left - Travels with Myself and Another (4AD) ................................................................... Ex-Mclusky dudes 2nd album. Features the single "The Hope That House Built" with its marching Queens Of The Stone Age-style riff. The lead off track sets the tone by lulling the listener into a false sense of security before exploding with a bloodthirsty roar of fuzzy bass and distorted guitar. The album's centerpiece, the synth-heavy "You Need Satan More Than He Needs You" finds the band at their savage best as keyboards bounce off hypnotic drumming and funky bass lines to create a devilish masterpiece that will captivate fans and newcomers alike. God Help the Girl - s/t (Matador) ................................................................... After the success of the most recent Belle & Sebastian album, band leader Stuart Murdoch decided to pursue his dream of writing a rock musical scored for female singers. After auditioning vocalists, he made his choices and, with all members of B&S backing him up, recorded this breathtaking record. It combines the strengths and feel of early B&S records in a broader musical palette, which draws equally on musicals, 60s girl groups, 80s indie, and most of all, classic pop. A Hawk and a Hacksaw - Delivrance (Leaf) ................................................................... Jeremy Barnes (vocals, accordion, drums) and partner Heather Trost (violin) embrace the sounds of a myriad of places and people. From the midlands of England and France to the Czech Republic, Romania, and Hungary via the pair's hometown of Albuquerque, this evolving musical story continues to enthrall. Delivrance forges deeper into the culture of the old East and comes back with a suite of euphoric melodies for times of revelry. Perhaps you saw them open for Wilco at IU this past spring - RIYL Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut, Nonesuch Explorer. Patterson Hood - Murdering Oscar (Ruth St) ................................................................... Sophomore solo album from the leader of the Drive-By Truckers. The album was produced by Hood and long-time DBT producer David Barbe (Sugar). Most of his DBT band mates join him as well as Don Chambers, Will Johnson and Scott Danbom from Centro-matic/South San Gabriel. This is also the first time Hood's father David Hood, famed Muscle Shoals bass player, joins him on a record. Mars Volta - Octahedron (WB) ................................................................... Hailed as 'the most musically adventurous act currently signed to a major label' and by Rolling Stone as 2008's Best Prog-Rock Band, The Mars Volta makes its Warner debut with the highly acclaimed group's 5th studio album. Following The Bedlam In Goliath - its third consecutive album to debut Top 10 - which featured 'Wax Simulacra,' Grammy winner for Best Hard Rock Performance, The Mars Volta's punkperverted neo-psychedelia goes acoustic on Octahedron. Pavement - Brighten the Corners [deluxe LP box] (Matador) ................................................................... This 4LP box includes 8 extra tracks not on the CD, 5 of which are previously unreleased. Also includes material from the CD version: the remastered original 12 song album, 10 B-sides, 10 outtakes, and 14 live radio tracks. Super deluxe accordion style box set, 16-page, 12x12 full color booklet, MP3 coupon, and huge essay by New Yorker critic Alex Ross. The wealth of extra material testifies to the extraordinary creativity of the band in this period. It ain't cheap, but its an amazing piece for the superfan! The Phenomenal Handclap Band - s/t (Friendly Fire) ................................................................... The PHB started when two underground club DJs became restless with the concept of playing other people's music. Both had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of esoteric music ranging from Brazilian soul to vintage psych-rock, so becoming producers seemed to be the next logical step. Together they have crafted a sound that is equal parts anthemic, dancefloor-oriented and orchestral, borrowing elements from progressive rock, disco, electro, and psychedelia. Push Pull - Between Noise and the Indians (Joyful Noise) ................................................................... This Bloomington band of Mikes (Bridavsky, Hoggatt, Notaro) have combined grandiose riffs and complex arrangements into an anthemic rock album. Their sound lies somewhere in between high-brow prog and low-brow, PBR-soaked basement punk. It seems the trio have sharpened their wit and crafted their musical skills into something unique and undeniably important - a sound which Skyscraper insists, "sounds nothing like Shellac, Big Black, or the Wipers" but which remains "bizarrely good". Regina Spektor - Far (WB) ................................................................... Regina's gold album Begin To Hope was honored as one of Rolling Stone's Top 50 albums of 2006. Her much anticipated follow-up once again spotlights Spektor's daring piano pop, vocal acrobatics and offbeat wit. Utilizing 4 esteemed producers - Jeff Lynne (ELO, Traveling Wilburys), Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem), David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Strokes) and Garret 'Jacknife' Lee (Weezer, R.E.M.) Spektor combines rich soundscapes with evocative and intricately structured melodies and a remarkable gift for crafting intelligent, refreshingly honest odes to life. CD+DVD version also available. Spinnerette - s/t (Anthem) ................................................................... Debut album from former Distillers front woman Brody Dalle. Also including bandmate Tony Bevilacqua and ex-Ret Hot Chilli Peppers and Queens of the Stone Age members Jack Irons and Alain Johannes, this is a mature, experienced Punk Rock record with strong melodies and Pop flourishes, which is reminescent of bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Eagles of Death Metal and the Pixies. Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... Sunset Rubdown was once the moniker under which Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, Swan Lake) released lo-fi solo recordings. The project has long since evolved into a full band, and "Dragonslayer" is the third full-length. The musicianship is unassisted by studio magic, and the songs are left to justify for themselves their own screwy pop-rock existence. Tortoise - Beacons of Ancestorship (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... Their first new record in over five years. Tortoise have been expanding the definition of rock music for over fifteen years. "Beacons" gives nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges. CD version is presented in a 4-panel mini-LP style jacket. LP is pressed on HQ 180-gram virgin vinyl and is presented in an old-style top-on gatefold jacket with artworked inner sleeve and MP3 download coupon. Larry Jon Wilson - s/t (Drag City) ................................................................... New release from this musician who created some classic underground LPs in the 70s for Monument Records, full of funky southern vibes. For over 3 decades, his bottomless talent has been hailed by Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle and many others. Larry Jon never learned how to be an uptown outlaw; he lived and toured with Townes Van Zant, his best friend was Mickey Newberry. He never sold out or took the easy option. His songs were too soulful for the rednecks, too down home for the discos. He was too real for the radio, too sophisticated for the honky tonks. When he gigged in Nashville there they were, all the big names huddled in the front rows. Larry Jon is the last of a vanishing breed. Pete Yorn - Back and Fourth (Columbia) ................................................................... A new musical chapter in which Yorn has taken a different approach to writing and recording with stunning results. Back and Fourth follows Yorn's first 3 albums, which he considers a trilogy, and is his first album in 3 years. Yorn wrote all 10 songs on Back and Fourth and recorded the album in Omaha, NE, with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley). Columbia's co-chairman Rick Rubin helped guide the project from its earliest demo stages to final mastering.
