After an early scorching, we are pleased as punch with the beautiful days of the past few. Summer in Bloomie, its really quite grand. And it don't get more summery than 4th of July weekend - cookouts, music, fireworks, friends. Which is why Landlocked Music is CLOSED Saturday, the 4th of July - go have fun! And do yourself a favor and plan to attend the FINAL Impossible Shapes show on Friday July 3rd at Russian Recording. Local blasts from the past, Intro to Airlift and Marmoset are also playing. Its only $5, its all-ages, 21+ to drink, and tons of supremely priced merchandise will be available. Come say your goodbyes and party with us... We would be remiss to not mention of the passing of Gary, Indiana's own: Michael Jackson. While many have questioned decisions in the past 20 years of his life, no one can deny the first 20 years. Did you hear that over the weekend, he had HALF of the top 100 tracks at iTunes and 27 of the top 100 albums (solo + J5) - that is crazy. We hope you find your peace, MJ. ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/30/2009 ................................................................... Bjork - Voltaic (Nonesuch) ................................................................... Bjork recorded the Voltaic live CD in one take at Olympic Studio in London with her new band, prior to her 2007 Glastonbury appearance, presenting the set she would play on tour - songs from Volta and new arrangements of such older material as "Pagan Poetry," "All Is Full Of Love" and a thunderous version of "Army Of Me." It's a stunning performance, featuring cutting-edge computer technology, an old-school horn section and a female, flag-toting Icelandic choir. CD+DVD version also available. Circuit des Yeux - Sirenum LP (de Stijl) ................................................................... These aren't exactly pipers at the gates of Lafayette. It's the sound of 'issues,' and the sound of 'troubles.' You don't get but one phone call and honey, the girl's voice makes this message a bit rubbly anyway. Take the manic snorts of captain liberty, dissonant as chalk and the next moment as melodic as sharp yet slick, metal teeth. Take the mermaid, 1988, turn the tides, gently, gently away. Selected breath / silences / selected feedback. Take an argument you have here with an empty street while the memory of high traffic is leaking back. Sirenum has a real 'spiritual food' vibe and it's pain and pleasure relief in this real met en zonder sort of way. This world is her world, and pipe if you like it. Levon Helm - Electric Dirt (Vanguard) ................................................................... The 2nd album in the last two years from American musical treasure Levon Helm. Its predecessor, the Grammy-winning Dirt Farmer, his first solo LP in a quarter century, followed Levon's near miraculous recovery from throat cancer, and as such represented a new lease on life for the legendary artist, who rose to prominence as the drummer and vocalist for Levon and the Hawks, which later became The Band. Electric Dirt again finds Levon steeped in tradition in his connection to the land and those who live by it, but this record goes deeper and wider, incorporating gospel, blues and soul elements in a bracing collection of originals and carefully chosen outside songs. Willie Isz - Georgiavania (Lex) ................................................................... Acclaimed producer, lyricist, singer and Philly resident Jneiro Jarel teams up with native Hotlanta OG and member of Rap supergroup Goodie Mob, Khujo Goodie. Together Khujo and Jneiro are called Willie Isz. Willie Isz is produced by Jneiro and combines elements of Hip Hop, Rock, and Electro, creating a new Georgiavania sound! Jneiro Jarel is the man behind projects such as Three Piece Puzzle and Craft of the Lost Art, sometimes better known as Dr. Who Dat? and Shape of Broad Minds. Khujo Goodie is the voice of southern hip hop classics like They Do Dance No Mo, 'Soul Food', and 'Fly Away', sparking the creation of the Dungeon Family collective along with Rap superstars Outkast that gave birth to the Southern Hip Hop sound. Moby - Wait For Me (Mute) ................................................................... While listening to filmmaker David Lynch speak, Moby had an epiphany. Lynch's message- creativity for its own sake is a beautiful, wonderful thing- was a simple one, but it hit Moby with the force of the Zen master's cane. The album resulting from this epiphany is a radical departure from Moby's recent albums. Liberated from the pressures of trying to please himself at the same time as the industry, Moby decided to forego the expensive studios, state-of-the-art equipment, big name guest artists, and phalanxes of graphic designers and image consultants that have characterized some of his previous albums. Jeffrey Novak - One of a Kind 7" (Sweet Rot) ................................................................... After turning quite a few heads with his self-released debut LP and Shattered Records 7", Jeffrey Novak (Cheap Time) is back with another two song hit single of A+ worthy pop. Both songs are so good, they had to flip a coin to pick the A-side. Sunn O))) & Pan Sonic - Suicide Covers EP (Blast First) ................................................................... Another release in Blast First's series of 10" vinyl EPs celebrating Alan Vega's 70th birthday, and this one is as serious as a heart attack. The hooded ones of Sunn O))) touch branch wands with the unsmiling Finlanders of Pan Sonic. Joe Preston intones the incantation as inscribed by the seer, Vega. Thunder cracks and rumbles, lightning bolts rend the sky, Valkyries ride the storm. Flip the disc, and you'll hear a live-in-hell version of "13 Crosses, 16 Blazin' Skulls," sci-fi electronic metal-machine music first heard on Vega's cruelly ignored 2007 album, Station. Lost soulman of the Black Country and previous head of Head Of David, Stephen Burroughs presents a Gira-esque acoustic version of "Goodbye Darling". Twisted tunes in an inside-out package. Beautifully-rendered "hidden" drawings by Coulter Jacobsen: drawn and re-drawn from memory. Wilco - Wilco (The Album) (Nonesuch) ................................................................... Wilco (the album) combines the intimacy of its previous studio disc, Sky Blue Sky, with the experimentation of A Ghost Is Born in a set that boasts strong melodies and gorgeous, often unabashedly pop arrangements. Wilco has clearly laid out the welcome mat to admirers of all aspects of its career; in fact, the disc opens with 'Wilco (the song)' originally unveiled in the group's performance on The Colbert Report last October in which Tweedy & Co. offer their fans 'a sonic shoulder to cry on,' promising,'Wilco will love you, baby.' Wu-Tang Clan - Chamber Music (Universal) ................................................................... It's not quite the same thing as a Wu-Tang Clan group album, but this is a welcome flashback to the era when it felt like a new Wu-affiliated album came out every week. For this one, the Brooklyn soul crew the Revelations laid down backing tracks, which Clan abbot the RZA oversaw and edited. Six Wu-Tang members show up at least once on the album: RZA, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa. Various other veterans of NY rap's hoodies and Tims era also show up, including Sean Price, Masta Ace, Cormega, M.O.P., and Kool G Rap. VA - Legends of Benin (Analog Africa) ................................................................... A collection of super-rare and highly danceable masterpieces recorded between 1969-1981 by 4 legendary composers from Benin: Gnonnas Pedro, Antoine Dougbe, El Rego et Ses Commandos and Honore Avolonto, each with a sound all their own. A thick brew of agbadja, soul, cavacha, funk, Afrobeat, and Afro-Latin sounds all mixed in with heavy traditional rhythms. This compilation includes a 44-page, full-color booklet with ultra-rare pictures and detailed biographies. Enjoy the mind-blowing sounds of Benin. VA - Punk in London DVD (Odeon) ................................................................... This documentary features incredible live performances from The Clash, X-Ray Spex, The Jam, Boomtown Rats, The Adverts, The Lurkers and many more! Digitally remastered to the highest standard from the original 1978 negatives by BBC Post Production, this access-all-areas documentary really captures the punk phenomenon in all its raw power and energy. Featuring early live performances and interviews with those who strived for anarchy in the UK, a unique and powerful record of punk life as it really happened in the late 70's. Includes previously unseen bonus footage of The Clash in Munich. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ...................................................................
