We are in the midst of one heckuva B-town summer, folks. Mild enough to keep the windows wide open at night. This surely will pass? So get it while the gettin's good! We've got a ton of new music and of course are putting out used CDs and LPs every single day. Spread the love... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 7/21/2009 ................................................................... Bad Veins - s/t (Dangerbird) ................................................................... Bad Veins are a Cinci act that has qualified as one of the most intriguing bands to hit their humble scene in some time. The 3 member band, which claims its 1973 Pioneer reel to reel recorder as its 3rd member, has lead man Ben Davis sing through a megaphone and an old telephone at times as well to create the fuzzy vocals that go hand in hand with their timely percussion. There's no clear genre or box to stash this band into and even they aren't exactly sure where they fit in. Blue Roses - s/t (XL) ................................................................... Laura Groves' influences span genres and generations: from Bartok to Bush, Tiersen to Tears For Fears, Debussy to Du Maurier. Blue Roses is the serendipity that can only happen when you thought you'd stopped looking. "...a dizzyingly beautiful set of delicate folk songs." NME. "A haunting record, full of unexpected instrumental textures that course beneath Groves' extraordinary voice and eerie, elusive lyrics" - Sunday Times Culture. Clark - Totems Flare (Warp) ................................................................... Totems Flare is the Berlin-based, UK native's boldest effort to date, featuring breakneck dance, driving techno and baroque melodics. It's also perhaps his most accessible, as it's the first to feature his own vocals. All of the hyperactive intellect and technically dazzling detail you'd expect from this master producer is here, but there is straightforward musicianship at work that is no longer subtle. Eyedea & Abilities - By the Throat (Rhymesayers) ................................................................... After a five year break exploring new sounds and building their personal repertoires, Eyedea & Abilities return with the follow up to their critically acclaimed sophomore album "E&A". With biting guitars, fuzzy keyboards, melodic choruses, and some of their most intricate turntable work to date, it cuts right to the vein and advances far beyond the duo's battle tested history (winners of HBO Blaze Battle, Rocksteady, Scribble Jam and the DMC's). Farmer Dave Scher - Bab'lone Nights 7" (Mexican Summer) ................................................................... Of Beachwoods Sparks and All Night Radio fame. In addition to his previously starry bands, this pedal steel master is known for his strong appearances, production, and performances that include the likes of Jenny Lewis, Interpol, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Rice, and Vetiver. The pedigree of Dave's projects comes close in hand with his debut album, filled with gorgeous lush arrangements and jams that reflect sunny JJ Cale meets Motown lovin. Scher keeps country minded and blends it properly with psych, soul, surf, and tinge of Bacharach. Fiery Furnaces - I'm Going Away (Thrill Jockey) ................................................................... I'm Going Away is the Fiery Furnaces' eighth album. It was recorded by and mixed with Jason Loewenstein. "The Fiery Furnaces make music that defies explication, categorization, and most standards of comprehension" - New York Times Galactic Zoo Dossier # 8 - Summer 2009 (Drag City) ................................................................... The Galactic Zoo Dossier is back, at last! Just in time for those long summer hours spent indoors. Issue #8 is another perfectbound compendium of the rare, the wacky, the underappreciate and the awesome, complete with a CD compilation to tie in with your reading and of course, a set of Damaged Guitar God and Astral Folk Goddess trading cards. Trevor Giuliani - Subcontrario (in Stereo) (Dovecote) ................................................................... It's difficult to pigeon-hole Trevor's songs into a singer/songwriter formula when each arrangement is finely detailed and accompanied by both acoustic and electronic instruments. Listeners will be surprised by the dynamic and breadth of the ups and downs. You'll find off-kilter, syncopated and deliberately out-of-time plucks met by hits that could seem scattered and unfocused if heard on their own. Woven together, however, they paint a picture to be appreciated for its precision. Bert Jansch - LA Turnaround (Drag City) Bert Jansch - Santa Barbara Honeymoon (Drag City) Bert Jansch - A Rare Conundrum (Drag City) ................................................................... Jansch reissues from his mid-70s run on the Charisma label that produced three unjustly obscure works in his lengthy discography: L.A. Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon and A Rare Conundrum. Part of the reason for the obscurity comes from the fact that none of these 3 records have been reissued until now! But really, they're awesome collections that find Bert branching out sound-wise in the latter stage of his early prime. CDs at the moment, LP packages for fall release. Magnolia Electric Co - Josephine (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Jason Molina's 16th full-length with Secretly Canadian, and Magnolia Electric Co.'s 5th full-length. A concept album that pays tribute to the life and spirit of fallen bassist Evan Farrell. It contains some of the strongest songs Molina has written. He's approached the universal loneliness before, but never in such a focused, directed manner. The band, consisting of local lovelies Jason Groth, Pete Schreiner, Mark Rice and Mike Kapinus has never shined brighter. Quite possibly the best MECo album yet! Megafaun - Gather, Form and Fly (Hometapes) ................................................................... Their highly anticipated 2nd album. "This record astonished me the first time i heard it. Astonished. Weeks later it broke me down in tears. Weeks later still listening, it unveils new layers in itself and it is literally rearranging how I perceive the power of music. its unbelievable - what these 3 dudes have sat down and accomplished in the art form of making a recording. It boggles my spirit." - former bandmate Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver Portugal the Man - Satanic Satanist (Equal Vision) ................................................................... The Satanic Satanist is unmistakably Portugal the Man, as the group has returned to working with loops and samples once more...certainly the most they have since their 2006 debut, Waiter: "You Vultures!". Riceboy Sleeps (Sigur Ros) - s/t (XL) ................................................................... Jon Thor Birgisson (Sigur Ros) and Alex Somers (Parachutes) have been exhibiting artwork and staging exhibitions under the name Riceboy Sleeps for a few years now. Their track "Happiness" was featured on the "Dark Was The Night" compilation. This record is more active than its antecedents in the ambient output of Eno and other deliberately low-impact works. It is awash with tension and stimuli, as well as being frequently and stunningly beautiful. RX Bandits - Mandala (Sargent House) ................................................................... The songs of Mandala highlight a more rock-oriented 4-piece, scaling down the horns to create a new twist to their constantly evolving dynamic. In an age where taking risks and being fearless can make or break you, RX have emerged as a tidal wave, a force that shatters all the boundaries set against them. Over their decade long career, the band have drawn from numerous genres; reinventing and revolutionizing their persona while retaining their socially conscious lyrics and bravado instrumentation that have kept each musical progression unmistakable RX. First ten buyers get a FREE copy of "And the Battle Begun" bundled with their CD! Starlight Mints - Change Remains (Barsuk) ................................................................... Starlight Mints are a group of beautiful pop mutants: 5 singular musical minds whose love for archetypal pop music and AM radio has provided, over the course of 3 acclaimed albums, a rock-solid foundation for a whole bunch of inspired uniqueness, all baked to perfection under the hot Oklahoma sun. They began jamming together in the 90s, giving birth to their own unusual brand of instrumentally complex, surrealistically worded pop sound. Talbot Tagora - Lessons In The Woods Or A City (Hardly Art) ................................................................... Talbot Tagora is a 3-person project from Seattle who create and produce art and non-fiction. Lessons in the Woods or a City is presented as a series of lessons. A series of abstractions for the senses. A sound shaped for an ear which suggest a thought. Presented by fish on a circle - as they change through a vehicle in time. A clock - a tool in measurement - included on a CD player. 33.333 - a number - revolutions per minute - included on a record player. Tools used in the summer, fall, winter, or spring - tools explaining a revolution - a year - in a revolution in a revolution. Wax Poetics - #36 - Brazil Issue ................................................................... If you haven't bought that extra fan, now might be the time. The summer heat wave is finally going to hit, because Wax Poetics' first-ever Brazil Issue is here! Every beat diggers wet dream come true. With Issue #36, Wax Poetics is paying homage to Brazil!
