More info: http://buyearlygetnow.com/info/8/ ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 7/28/2009 ................................................................... Band of Skulls - Baby Darling Doll Face Honey (Artist First) ................................................................... Their debut offers a taste of their driving guitar force, heartbreaking duets, and sun-kissed, wall of sound harmonies. Produced, recorded, and mixed by Ian Davenport (Supergrass, Badly Drawn Boy). Artwork by bassist Emma Richardson. "The Southampton U.K. rockers sound kinda like Blondie having a threesome with Flea and Tony Kiedis in a White Stripes mosh pit" - MTV. Cold Cave - Love Comes Close (Heartworm) ................................................................... Love Comes Close is the debut full-length from Cold Cave. After releasing singles on Hospital Productions, What's Your Rupture?, and Dais Records, as well as a compilation of early material, Cold Cave is now releasing their first realized vision of modern pop music. Somewhere in the realms of negative hiss and out-of-body bliss, there is a peak awaiting all who enter. Wesley Eisold is joined by an orbiting line-up that includes fellow allies Caralee McElroy (Xiu Xiu), Dominick Fernow (Prurient) Max G. Morton (celebrated author) and J. Benoit. They have been compared to Erasure and Whitehouse and are a true rarity in this instamatic culture. Drakkar Sauna - 20009 (Marriage) ................................................................... Drakkar Sauna, have been making music and records since 2003. Wallace Cochran and Jeff Stolz, who comprise its essential elements, have been enemies for much longer. Their new record 20009 (pronounced two thousand-ousand nine) is about the development of the rocket from Hermes Trismegistus and the cults of ancient Egypt to the twenty-third century. The release of the record will coincide with the publication of a companion novel The Moon For Its Citizens, written by Cochran.ÊStolz and Cochran are joined by Jason Groth, Michael Kapinus, Mark Rice of Magnolia Electric Co, Chris Barth & Aaron Deer of The Impossible Shapes, and Jill Sahiba Nielsen-Farrell. The record is dedicated in memory to their friend Evan Farrell. Drug Rug - Paint the Fence Invisible (Black & Greene) ................................................................... Tommy Allen & Sarah Cronin debut their love for one another in the form of their outstanding S/T record. Drug Rug hail from Boston and have written and recorded the most heartbreaking debut since June & Johnny got together. It's almost like the clash of two seperate generations have joined, and Joanna Newsom & Keith Richards had recently met in some distant far off land. The Features - Some Kind of Salvation (Loose Tooth) ................................................................... The Features are a psychedelic rock outfit that plays fresh, off-kilter pop that sounds like a head-on collision between Ray Davies and Elvis Costello with the Elephant 6 Collective picking up the pieces and putting them back together in the American South. Howling Bells - Radio Wars (Nettwerk) ................................................................... Radio Wars, their second release, is even more majestic, darkly evocative, and cinematic in scope than their debut, with touchstones from Siouxsie and the Banshees to the Cure and Garbage. Melodies charge straight ahead, creating songs that are both instant and totally unforgettable. For Radio Wars the band partnered with Don Grech-Marguerat, who has engineered records alongside Nigel Godrich for names like Radiohead, Air and Paul McCartney. Georgia Anne Muldrow - Umsindo (1AM Approach) ................................................................... Los Angeles-born Georgia Anne Muldrow is well known for her unorthodox soundscaping and inspired traditional African Song structuring. Her cameo performances with artists such as Dudley Perkins, Madlib, Wildchild, and Erykah Badu have her featured as a vocalist garnering raspy tones... yet there is more to her story as a producer! Umsindo (which means sound in Zulu) is her 2nd full length album and tells this story, with subject matter ranging from world politics to the metaphysical sciences-with laserlike synthwork to match! Dudley Perkins - Holy Smokes (1AM Approach) ................................................................... Holy Smokes, is Dudley Perkins' latest release with Georgia Anne Muldrow behind the boards and is named aptly so - its swirling organs, gut-wrenching concepts, and hard hitting rhythms are bound to astound you! Starflyer 59 - Ghosts of the Past 2CD [rarities] (Tooth & Nail) ................................................................... 31 tracks of covers, b-sides, demos, and non-album versions of songs. Jason Martin's haunting vocal display perfectly accompanies the atmospheric mood set by the dreamy guitar lines, creating a sort of glimmering magic that could only come from one so gifted. Over 10 albums deep, 15+ years time, from the early guitar-heavy Shoegazing era to the ethereal moodiness of The Fashion Focus years to the latest incarnations and recreations of themselves as keyboard-driven masters of chorus, this is and always will be a band who will deliver great songs with new sounds. Timber Timbre - s/t (Arts & Crafts) ................................................................... Over the course of 3 records, Timber Timbre (aka Taylor Kirk) has gained a loyal following. Spellbinding performances opening for noted Toronto musicians such as Ohbijou and Bruce Peninsula have earned Kirk devoted fans. The years have also marked a rapid progression from dusty, low-fi bedroom blues to the sophisticated, cinematic studio work. Recording for the new album began in his home studio, while putting the finishing touches at the Lincoln County Social Club with producer Chris Stringer (The D'Urbervilles, Ohbijou, Rush, David Wilcox). 24-Carat Black - Gone: Promises of Yesterday (Numero Group) ................................................................... Rediscovered in the early 90s by Britain's rare groove scene, 24-Carat Black's Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth has since been known as their first and final chapter, barely a footnote in the well documented history of Stax. Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday is by no means a sequel. Missing are the poignant and bleak sermons on the pain of inner-city existence, replaced by dusky, sensuous re-workings of love songs Warren had written as far back as 1965. Wildly divergent in tone, scope, and mission, the second 24-Carat Black album is tethered to the first by a single, crucial element: its creator. The Wire Magazine - #306 - August 2009 ................................................................... On The Cover: Madlib - The 'human record crate' behind Quasimoto, Yesterdays New Quintet and Beat Konducta tells Lisa Blanning about ancient grooves and future hiphop. Plus: Hypnagogic pop, British visionary jazz Primer, Sleazy Peter Christopherson's Invisible Jukebox, Andrea Parkins, Nisennenmondai, Diana Rogerson, Rolf Julius and more... John Zorn - O'O (Tzadik) ................................................................... Named after an extinct Hawaiian bird, O'o is the charming follow up to the self-titled debut of composer John Zorn's most accessible project, The Dreamers. Culled from Zorn's inner circle of longstanding collaborators, this all-star sextet of Downtown veterans explores his most tuneful compositions, threading aspects of easy listening, exotica, film soundtracks, surf, and world music into an evocative panorama.
