More info: http://buyearlygetnow.com/info/8/ ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/4/2009 ................................................................... Assjack (Hank Williams III) - s/t (Curb) ................................................................... The highly anticipated debut features Hank III who wrote, performed and produced everything on the record. The self-titled album personifies the split in the psyche of the singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer who last year released the psych-country album Damn Right, Rebel Proud. This ain't country, this is heavy! Paul Banks (Interpol) - Julian Plenti is Skyscraper (Matador) ................................................................... Mysterious NYC singer-songwriter returns from several years of hibernation with his debut album. Featuring Mike Stroud of Ratatat, Sam Fogarino of Interpol, Charles Burst of the Occasion and Striker Manley of Stiff Jesus, this incredibly varied album runs the gamut from gorgeous folk-tinged acoustic songs to huge, orchestral guitar anthems. The palette changes from black and white to color and back, from regal Eastern European synth sounds to sad but triumphant brass. Amanda Blank - I Love You (Downtown) ................................................................... Debut album from the Philly MC. Amanda is a one-woman Rap/Dance machine who also moonlights as a member of Sweatheart. While the album is edgy and Hip Hop oriented, Amanda Blank is an old hippie at heart: life is all about peace, love and having fun! The album features production from Diplo, Switch, and XXXChange plus guest spots from Santogold, Lykke Li, The Cool Kids, and Spank Rock! Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band (Sub Pop) ................................................................... Eric Johnson's Fruit Bats have never shied away from darkness, but more uncommon in this day and age, they've refused to shy away from light. Using bright melodies, defiantly major-key chord structures, natural imagery mixed with the occasional blazing insight and tender observation, The Ruminant Band, marks a further crystallization of Johnson's own melodic instincts and overall vision. Eric has spent the handful of years between Fruit Bats records playing with peers as heralded and forward-thinking as Vetiver and The Shins. Greymachine - Disconnected (Hydra Head) ................................................................... Greymachine is the most realized collaborative effort between Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh), Dave Cochrane (Head Of David, God, Ice), Diarmuid Dalton (Jesu, Godflesh) and Aaron Turner (ISIS) ever! If you're a fan of Godflesh, or have even a fleeting interest in the band, this bud's for you. Disconnected, the album in question, sounds like a serious case of cyberbullying through the mind of an extremely autistic child living in an ever-shifting hadean landscape thronged with mindless militants, dilapidated cityscapes and ephemeral phantoms. Helado Negro - Awe Owe (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... Drawing from a rich variety of influences from the cradle to his crate digging years, Roberto Lange as Helado Negro cites influences such as Funkadelic, DJ Premiere, South American 60s pop, Arthur Russell, Ecuadorean ballad singer Julio Jaramillo, and the production style of Adrian Sherwood in the early On-U Sound releases. But when asked about his contemporaries, Lange references all the players on the album, adding the names of visual artists David Ellis and Christian Marclay, two artists who use elements of DJ culture in their work. Japandroids - Post-Nothing (Polyvinyl) ................................................................... Japandroids is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC. Originally intending to be a trio, the boys decided to forgo the logistical nightmare of having a 'lead singer' and do it themselves. As a consequence, Japandroids are one guitar, one set of drums, and two vocalizers. They call it garage rock. They don't care what you call it, as long as it's not minimal. Japandroids are maximal - a two piece band trying to sound like a five piece band. Lightning Dust - Infinite Light (Jagjaguwar) ................................................................... Infinite Light, Lightning Dust's sophomore album for Jagjaguwar, finds duo Amber Webber and Joshua Wells (both of Black Mountain) calling upon the powers of classic pop arrangements and making the most of five days with a Steinway Grand piano. Moments of Infinite Light remind us of the glory days of musical theatre, with touches of Hair, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Tommy. Lightning Dust have delivered a cosmic record about the adventure in finding love and the journey in losing and rediscovering "the light." Marmoset - Tea Tornado (Joyful Noise) ................................................................... Throughout the last 14 years, the enigmatic Indianapolis trio known as Marmoset have fostered a near-mythical cult status with their claustrophobic, moody, and etherial blend of indie pop. Having crafted such subtle, eccentric, and critically acclaimed pop masterpieces as 2001's "Record In Red" (Secretly Canadian), Marmoset continue their unruly trajectory with the lazy swagger, slimy melody, and profound simplicity that is Tea Tornado. Too strange to be punk, too free of pretension to be psychedelic or glam, but it's filled with moments that conjure up each of these genres. Marmoset's songs deal in dark love, modern confusion, drug haze, poetic nightmares, and melancholy melodies. Nathaniel Mayer - Why Won't You Let Me Be Black? (Alive) ................................................................... Nathaniel Mayer (1944-2008) was one of the all-time great soul singers. His 1962 record "Village of Love" made him a star, and he inspired several generations of musicians, especially in his hometown of Detroit. His last sessions took place during two long summer days and nights of intense jamming, writing, and recording. "Why Don't You Give It To Me?" was the first installment of these recordings to be unleashed. This is a second volume of Nathaniel Mayer having a blast with the assistance of members of the Black Keys, SSM, Outrageous Cherry, and the Dirtbombs. The 2 acoustic performances are Nathaniel's only known "unplugged" performance. Modest Mouse - No One's First and You're Next (Sony) ................................................................... Since first breaking into the mainstream with their hit, "Float On", Modest Mouse has broken boundaries for indie music. Their impressive back catalog has become essential for hardcore fans to own, and they are often treated with b-sides and rare tracks from the band. No One's First and You're Next is a collection of newly recorded songs from the We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and Good News for People Who Love Bad News sessions, as well as 2 rare b-sides. Nurses - Apple's Acre (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... Apple's Acre is a record full of dysfunctional, hushed love, laced with elegance and grace and without angst and regret. But the plain courage of their songs is the secret ingredient that's already turning heads and blowing minds all over the Northwest and if you think about it, in pop music, courage is always at a premium. Fans of Yeasayer, Deerhoof, Danielson and wild minded pop music should pay close attention. Joe Pernice - It Feels So Good When I Stop (Ashmont) ................................................................... A companion piece to Joe Pernice's debut novel. The book will be published August 6. According to Pernice, Though the book is not explicitly about music, there are quite a few cover and fictional songs mentioned, so I thought it would be a cool idea for me to record some of those songs and release them, as a soundtrack album to the novel. The album is performed by Joe Pernice, Peyton Pinkerton, Mike Belitsky, Bob Pernice, with James Walbourne and Ric Menck. Solillaquists Of Sound - No More Heroes (Anti) ................................................................... With the release of their sophomore album "No More Heroes", Orlando based hiphop quartet Solillaquists Of Sound have accomlished the rare feat of creating a body of work that's as hip-shakingly gratifying to the casual listener as it is groundbreaking, imaginative and rewarding to fans looking for sommething more in the soundtrack to their lives. For fans of Sage Francis, The Roots and Digable Planets. Throw Me the Statue - Creaturesque (Secretly Canadian) ................................................................... Perhaps more sonically upbeat than its predecessor, Creaturesque's details are at times painted in both optimistic and sobering tones. Reitherman's scattershot poetics touch on an array of ideas; it's oppressive American machisimo and Suburbanite sexuality. It's soft drugs and convertible cars. It's the struggle for higher expectations within the mess of modern life, and when wrapped up in the structures of TMTS' sure-handed tunes it's an all too delicious combination. Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Snake (Control Group) ................................................................... Sweden's extraordinary drums and vocals duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums return with The Snake, the fierce follow up to their intoxicating debut, Heartcore. In 2008 vocalist Mariam Wallentin and her percussionist husband Andreas Werliin were introduced to the world outside their lively Gothenburg scene and wound up as one of the year's hidden treasures. The pair has since toured extensively, thriving on international festival stages, equally at home alongside pop sensations like fellow Swede Lykke Li as free-improv outfit The Thing. Yacht - See Mystery Lights (DFA) ................................................................... Both melodic and fashionably electro, See Mystery Lights runs precisely programmed digital ear candy through a Talking Heads-ish art-pop sensibility, tossing in congas, Afropop chords and loads of synth squiggles. Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans get credit for truth in advertising: The throbbing singalong "Summer Song" will sound killer bumping from ad-hoc porch discos during the coming months. Yim Yames (Jim James from MMJ) - Tribute To EP (ATO) ................................................................... Debut solo release from My Morning Jacket leader Jim James. Tribute To... is a collection of George Harrison songs that James recorded back in 2001, a few days after Harrison had passed away. The tracks were recorded on his cousin John's "ol faithful" Fostex 8 track reel-to-reel. Features 'Long Long Long', 'My Sweet Lord', 'All Things Must Pass' and more.
