Ruh roh, the student invasion has begun... where did our summer go?! Time to get out there and enjoy it while we still can. This week sees TONS of great new shows announced in town (see below) and of course, tons of great new tunes. We are still taking pre-orders for the new Pearl Jam CD/LP, out on 9/22. As well as the new Yo La Tengo, out on September 8th. On 09/09/09 the hugely anticipated new Beatles remasters (individual CDs and boxed sets!) will be released (a Wednesday release date, even!). We ALL love the Beatles and there is no better time to fill up your collection because for ONE DAY ONLY on Weds 09/09/09 Landlocked Music will be offering these for only $9.99 each. That is a huge savings, believe it. (White Album and Past Masters don't qualify, sorry.) Each of these come in gorgeous limited edition "soft pack" with expanded booklets including new liner notes and rare photoes. Each album also contains bonus mini-documentary videos as well. Pre-order any or ALL of them today and guarantee you get them for $9.99 on 9/9/09! We will only have limited amounts at this insane price! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/18/2009 ................................................................... Brendan Benson - My Old Familiar Friend (ATO) ................................................................... Brendan returns with his fourth solo album. Taking a break from writing, recording, and touring with the Grammy-winning Raconteurs, Benson went into the studio with producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Maximo Park, Foo Fighters, Gomez, etc.) and mixer Dave Sardy (Rolling Stones, LCD Soundsystem, Oasis). The result is a timeless, 11 track album. The Cave Singers - Welcome Joy (Matador) ................................................................... The second album from Seattle's Cave Singers is a gorgeous, rich folky stew hitting musical touchstones from Led Zeppelin III (think Bron Yr Aur Stomp) to Iron and Wine, CCR, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and Will Oldham. With a healthy dollop of the more mournful Stevie Nicks songs from Fleetwood Mac's mid-'70s period. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer, Ladyhawk), the album is far richer and more interesting sounding than their debut. The band perform their dramatic, forlorn and occasionally triumphant music in a wonderfully autumnal haze. Destroyer - Bay of Pigs (Merge) ................................................................... Bay of Pigs is the longest of Destroyer songs and Destroyer's first foray into ambient disco. The song was recorded throughout the winter of 2009 with Destroyer collaborators/members John Collins and David Carswell at JCDC Studio in Vancouver. Bay of Pigs is an account of the 1961 American invasion of Cuba. The music for Ravers was played entirely on analogue synthesizer, and recorded in April 2009. It explores some of the more meditative realms of 20th Century classical composition. The song is a casual rumination on parties, political parties, madness and suffering (for one's art). Division Day - Visitation (Dangerbird) ................................................................... Dangerbird Records is thrilled to announce the addition of LA quartet Division Day to their roster of artists. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Justin Meldal Johnsen (NIN/Beck/Gnarls Barkley) and mixed by Todd Burke (Ben Harper/The Rumble Strips/Idlewild). The follow up to 2007's Beartrap Island, Visitation finds the band steering confidently into darker territory, marrying synthetic and organic textures in songs about death, transformation, and the devil. Farmer Dave Scher - Flash Forward to Good Times (Kemado) ................................................................... It's Farmer Dave of Beachwoods Sparks and All Night Radio fame. In addition to his previously starry bands, pedal steel master Farmer Dave Scher is known for his strong appearances, production, and performances that include the likes of Jenny Lewis, Interpol, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Rice, and Vetiver. The pedigree of Dave's projects comes close in hand with his debut album, filled with gorgeous lush arrangements and jams that reflect sunny JJ Cale meets Motown lovin. Scher keeps country minded and blends it properly with psych, soul, surf, and tinge of B. Bacharach. Joe Henry - Blood from Stars (Anti) ................................................................... With his work as both producer and a songwriter overlapping and informing one another, it is only natural that the blues found their way onto Henry's latest album "Blood From Stars" after most recently producing albums for Allen Toussaint and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The album features veteran musicians like guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist Jason Moran. Joe Henry has produced and written with Loudon Wainwright, Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint, Ornette Coleman, Solomon Burke, Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Don Byron, T-Bone Burnett and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem (P.W. Elverum & Sun) ................................................................... Wind's Poem is the 3rd "official" album by Mount Eerie, the third in the continuum of semi-narrative explorations on the themes of erosion and mortality. It is the best record ever made by Mount Eerie or any related projects, according to them. Double clear vinyl, incredible heavy gatefold jackets with bronze foil stamping, 36 inch double sided lyrics poster, everything manufactured to the highest standards of quality. Jack Penate - Everything is New (XL) ................................................................... Everything Is New, Jack Penate's 2nd album, is a soul record. Recorded over 12 intense months in producer Paul Epworth's (Bloc Party, Friendly Fires) own west London home studio, Everything Is New is a giant musical leap forward from this 24 year old Londoner's acclaimed debut album. Everything Is New is a technicolour record full of experimentation and possibility. Featuring the blissed-out house grooves of first single "Tonight's Today" and swaggering soul of anthemic new single "Be The One", the album fuses Penate's wide-eyed pop songwriting with the music he's always loved and lived. Pissed Jeans - King of Jeans (Sub Pop) ................................................................... If 2005's Shallow was Pissed Jeans coping with moving out of their parents' homes, and 2007's Hope for Men their initial reaction to the mechanical lifestyle of a wage-earner, King of Jeans is their formal and uneasy acceptance of adulthood, by way of one hell of a rock record. From simple minds and simple fabrics comes this King of Jeans. And there can be only one. Ramona Falls - Intuit (Barsuk) ................................................................... Ramona Falls is Brent Knopf's first solo venture, but he has an extensive musical resume as part of trio Menomena. His debut release, Intuit, was written and performed by Brent, with guest appearances by 35 friends (including members of The Helio Sequence, Mirah, Loch Lomond, 31 Knots, Talkdemonic, Nice Nice, Tracker, Dat'r, Dear Reader, 3 Leg Torso, and Matt Sheehy). Jay Reatard - Watch Me Fall (Matador) ................................................................... The long awaited follow-up to Blood Visions. For his second studio album and proper Matador debut, Memphis prolific punk wunderkind Jay Reatard has moved beyond his roots and recorded an album chockful of irresistible melodies, the songs cascading with joyous hooks. He would not be Jay Reatard, however, if there wasn't a certain aggro negativity, and the song titles and lyrics do much to undercut the pop sensibility: I'm Watching You, Hang Them All, Can't Do It Anymore, Wounded, It Ain't Gonna Save Me. Six Organs of Admittance - Luminous Night (Drag City) ................................................................... This is the first Six Organs of Admittance album with such a lengthy gap between it and its former number. In the past two years Ben Chasny has kept busy writing this new epic, moving house to Seattle, composing soundtracks for novels and movies, and touring constantly with bands like The Dead C and OM as well as being invited by legendary post-metal group Neurosis to play their Beyond The Pale festival in Belgium. Through dark days and glowing nights, Chasny continues to step to the far rim of the world with purposeful strides. New horizons are visible throughout, be it in the face of spiritual crisis or catharsis. VA - Kompakt Total 10 (Kompakt) ................................................................... Kompakt's most-anticipated compilation release of the year reaches the double-digits with number 10. This diverse collection of solid-gold hit favorites is still standing and stronger than ever, coinciding with the Kompakt Total event. Spanning the course of two CDs and three LPs, Kompakt Total 10 features essential tunes from the Kompakt catalog and highlights exclusive, new music from the likes of DJ Koze, Thomas/Mayer, JŸrgen Paape, Wassermann aka Wolfgang Voigt, and others. VA - New Tales to Tell: Love & Rockets Tribute (Justice) ................................................................... It's been nearly a quarter of a century since one of the most celebrated, and influential bands of our generation, Love And Rockets formed. In 1985 Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins departed from being Gothic Rock icons with the highly coveted Bauhaus and merged sparkling New Wave Disco dust influenced T. Rex Boogie, Rockabilly, Punk, Folk, proto-Rave, and Psychedelia into one big ball of confusion. So it's only natural that eventually similar minded multi-faceted artists including both legends such as Frank Black, Flaming Lips, Stephen Perkins (Janes Addiction), Dandy Warhols, and newer buzzworthy acts A Place to Bury Strangers, Snowden, War Tapes, and Blaqk Audio pay their respect to a band whom had influenced their style.
