Thanks! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 9/1/2009 ................................................................... Avett Brothers - Slight Figure of Speech 7" (Columbia) ................................................................... Over the course of a decade, the Avett Brothers have perfected a blend of bluegrass picking, country harmonies and rock & roll energy. The mix of influences present in the band's rootsy work has inspired terms like "folk-punk" and "grungegrass," though the North Carolina siblings avoid such labels. The unique sound also attracted Rick Rubin, who signed the band to Columbia and is producing their major-label debut, I and Love and You, out 9/29. This is the leadoff single, b/w the exclusive b-side "More Of You." David Bazan - Curse your Branches + 7" (Barsuk) ................................................................... Revered for his work fronting the influential group Pedro The Lion, Curse Your Branches is David Bazan's first full-length release under his own name. It's a flat-out masterwork by a modern American poet at the height of his powers (Paste called him a Dostoevsky for our all-at-once world and one of the 100 Best Living Songwriters alongside indie-rock stalwarts like Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, and legends like Nick Cave, Merle Haggard, Sly Stone, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, and John Prine). Black Crowes - Before the Frost... Until the Freeze (Silver Arrow) ................................................................... A new Black Crowes album via the band's own Silver Arrow label. A second album, titled ...Until The Freeze, will be given away for free exclusively through a unique download code included in Before The Frost... CD as a thank you to their fans for two decades of support. Before the Frost features 11 new studio songs. Until The Freeze has 8 new songs plus a cover version of the Stephen Stills classic "So Many Times." Both were recorded over a series of 5 nights at Levon Helm Studios. Although both are studio albums, all the material was performed and recorded in front of an intimate audience of the band's fans. A.A. Bondy - When the Devil's Loose (Fat Possum) ................................................................... Recorded primarily in Water Valley, MS - When the Devil's Loose expands upon the stripped-down sound of A.A. Bondy's debut album, American Hearts. A full band now accompanies him on most tracks, lending a full, roomy sound to ten songs of bluesy Americana carried along by Bond's lived-in voice. When the Devil's Loose sounds almost from another era, whether it's a quiet, spooky twang, lullaby-like, inflected with old-time R&B, or colored with traces of 60s pop. Datarock - RED (Nettwerk) ................................................................... Datarock have returned with the follow up to the geek-chic party album of 2005, Datarock Datarock. That debut mixed Happy Mondays-esque Punk-Funk with warped Devo humor, and was well received by critics and music fans. Red takes those influences and adds Fela Kuti and Kraftwerk along with a more sophisticated approach. Drive By Truckers - The Fine Print: Oddities & Rarities (New West) ................................................................... DBT have been making music together for 13 years resulting in 7 critically acclaimed studio albums which could not contain all of the songs written by the band. DBT recently dug into the vaults and put finishing touches on a selection of songs that were never quite completed. The result of the collaboration is a 12-track album of previously unreleased and rare songs. Features songs written by band members past and present, including Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell. Seven of the songs come from The Dirty South era. The record also contains 4 covers including Rebels by Tom Petty, which the band recorded originally for the TV show King Of The Hill and Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan which provided Shonna with her first ever lead vocal on a DBT recording. The Entrance Band - s/t (Ecstatic Peace) ................................................................... An incendiary journey into the creative group-mind of 3 talented and inspired musicians; guitarist and vocalist Guy Blakeslee, drummer Derek James and bassist Paz Lenchantin. Ten powerful songs, working as a whole to create an ethereal yet driving melodic concoction - heavy without being plodding, psychedelic without being whimsical. Blakeslee sings with unbridled emotion and plays left-handed on an upside-down guitar, scraping and bending the strings in search of new sonic adventures. James' kinetic rhythms conjure dances both ancient and futuristic. Rounded out and locked together by Lenchantin's primal and pulsating bass lines, the music transcends any retro stylings and brings their sound into the present day and beyond. The Lost Fingers - Lost In The 80s CD (Sony) ................................................................... Only Canada could produce something as insidious as an album of jazz covers of 80s songs (in a French accent, no less). Yet The Lost Fingers, a trio of handsome gentlemen with excellent sunglasses, have made this potentially disastrous idea into a relentlessly clever and hilarious album. Lullabye Arkestra - Threats/Worship (Vice) ................................................................... Lullabye Arkestra is Kat Taylor-Small and Justin Small. Brought together by love, they are bound by and to the music. It's music by lovers, for fighters. When Kat picks up her bass and Justin gets behind the drums, the result is dirty, swaggering rock 'n' roll. While past incarnations have found up to a dozen people adding to the sound, today the Arkestra is stripped down, back to the core. This is a duo who knows when to scream, when to pummel, and, at the perfect moment, when to let the vulnerabilities show. Lullabye Arkestra's first official album, Ampgrave (2006), was released on Constellation Records. Pax Nicholas & The Nettey Family - Na Teef Know De Road of Teef (Daptone) ................................................................... Nicholas became a full member of Fela Kuti's band Africa 70 as a conga player and background singer in 1971. The first record he appeared on was Lady Shakara - an international smash hit and one of Fela's greatest. In the 70s, stars like James Brown, BB King, Ginger Baker, Stevie Wonder and Manu Dibango came to Lagos to visit Fela's Shrine club to hear this new and incredibly heavy thing called Afrobeat. While playing for Felas's Africa 70, he always had his own thing going on the side. He released 2 solo LPs, one of them being this in 1973. A heavy afro-funk record, that was recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were recorded as well. Fela was not amused at all about these kinds of things, even less when he heard how strong the album was. He reportedly said: "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!" And so it was. Despite being a killer record, "Na Teef" remained undercover for more than 30 years. Pere Ubu - Long Live Pere Ubu (Hearthan) ................................................................... New release from the veteran Post-Punk/Avant-Garde outfit lead by David Thomas. Long Live Pere Ubu! is the album of songs that was the genesis of the entire mess. It is a great leap forward in their pursuit of hyper-naturalistic recording techniques by which they replaced microphones in the studio with wooden boxes, junked radio speakers, metal horns, and electrically charged window panes. Sound itself becomes the narrative. Everyone is going to hate it. They e know that. The story, though satiric and comedic, is utterly bleak, lacking charm (the usual counter-weight to the band's noire tendencies) and devoid of redemption. Few people have ever read Ubu Roi, fewer heard of it. Reverend Horton Heat - Laughin and Cryin (Yep Roc) ................................................................... The greatest rock-country-punkabilly performer of his generation, the Reverend Horton Heat is back after a lengthy recording hiatus. The man that first linked roots and alternative music is taking it back to where his heart is. A pomade-stiff romp down the dusty road less traveled, the album leans toward the hard-drinking, hard-driving 'billy' side of rockabilly with lounge love songs, odes to the good life, comical takes on family life and country guitar wizardry, Rev-style. The Rev has gained a diehard cult following who flock to his never ending string of gigs and continue to spread the myth of the biggest, baddest guitar man on the planet. Squarepusher - Solo Electric Bass 1 (Warp) ................................................................... Proof positive of Squarepusher's status as one of the world's most talented bass players - strictly limited and unedited. This live recording was taken from one of his spellbinding solo bass performances in Paris in September 2007. A performance that consists purely of him on stage with a bass and an amp. Famous fans include Andre 3000 & Flea, who described it as "he is the best electric bass player on the earth, he is pushing the instrument the farthest - he is the best". Indeed, anyone who has witnessed him live will already know of his mesmerising unique style which he incorporates into his big production live shows.
