Hello darlin'. Times have changed but our hearts haven't yet. You're just as lovely as the first time I saw you. Don't let this rain bring ya down... TONS of new releases pouring in week after week, as well as TONS of great live shows passing thru - don't let these times pass you by. The grandkids will be even less interested in the stories about all the things you missed! ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/6/2009 ................................................................... Air - Love 2 (Astralwerks) ................................................................... With such an impressive body of work behind them, the band is now free to write and record as the inspiration takes them and able to draw on their very own musical lexicon honed over 12 years of active duty and an enviable collection of vintage synths, guitars, and assorted gadgets that grace Atlas, their very own studio nestled in the leafy backstreets of northern Paris. The group's 5th LP and, whilst being instantly recognisable as an Air record, sees the band exploring some new territories with the help of drummer Joey Waronker. Anvil - The Story of Anvil DVD (VH1) ................................................................... Is Anvil the real Spinal Tap? That's a label that could be applied to any number of hapless hard rock bands, but there's enough evidence in The Story of Anvil to suggest that these guys may have tapped into the motherlode. The parallels are many, including getting lost on the way to a gig, playing before 174 people in a 10,000 capacity venue (in Transylvania, yet), inept management, ridiculous songs... heck, they even visit Stonehenge. But dig deeper and you'll find some real heart in this documentary. These two were there when the metal band formed in the early 80s and went on to share festival stages with the likes of Bon Jovi and Whitesnake. Now, a quarter century later, they are in their 50s, living in Toronto with wives, kids, and menial jobs. But they still haven't given up their undying belief that with a new album (their 13th!) and couple of breaks, they will be rock stars. Lou Barlow - Goodnight Unknown (Merge) ................................................................... In the years since his career-redefining, mostly acoustic record Emoh, Lou has reunited with Dinosaur Jr and reissued 3 of Sebadoh's classics. Borrowing the live-band energy of Dino Jr and the stylistic reach of Sebadoh, Barlow has built on Emoh's full production and written a set of immediate, melodic pop songs that Lou describes as, "a cross between my later work with Folk Implosion and my earlier work with Sebadoh - to my ears, anyway." To our ears too, if you remember his amazing instore performance earlier this year! Black Heart Procession - Six (Temporary Residence) ................................................................... When San Diego's Three Mile Pilot went on a sudden hiatus in 1998, its members split into 2 new bands. One became a beloved complex pop band (Pinback), the other (Black Heart Procession) has become one of underground music's darkest cult phenomenon. Brimming with pitch-black ballads of discarded loves and forgotten souls, they paint a bleak yet strangely comforting portrait of heartbreak, self-destruction and religious allegory over some of their most inspired songs to date, drawing a clear line from here to visionaries such as Cohen, Cash and Waits. Karl Blau - Zebra (K) ................................................................... On his 3rd solo album, Karl Blau overtly mirrors African musical influences with hints of blues, soul and rock steeped in l'herbe de Northwest and he calls it Zebra. This recording explores the frontiers of folklore, adding one instrument at a time (drum, guitar, bell, keys, saxophone, flute, piano) in an organic process of response to this confluence of sounds. Blau is adept at imaginative and sweet songs about education, work, love and society. Catch him w/ Lake at Russian Recording on October 24th! Boys Noize - Power (Last Gang) ................................................................... Power is the 2nd album from German producer and DJ Alexander Ridha and follows on from the unexpected success of his 2007 debut 'Oi Oi Oi'. Taking inspiration from electro and techno, Ridha delivers a collection of pounding club tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor. The singles 'Jeffer' and 'Starter' are also included. Built to Spill - There is No Enemy (Warner Bros) ................................................................... Fresh off their triumphant performance at the Bluebird last week.... When making the new album There Is No Enemy, Doug literally lived in the studio working all day and night. He spent hours and hours laying down guitar tracks he realized he couldn't use since the first live takes had the best tone and feel. He had to undigitally remix the record. It has the sound and feel of the album that every Built To Spill fan has been anxiously awaiting. Califone - All My Friends Are Funeral Singers (Dead Oceans) ................................................................... Califone is at the peak of its powers. The long-awaited follow-up to Roots and Crowns, its the strongest collection of songs in a career with no shortage of strength. A dense collage of sounds, expertly formed into fully realized pop songs. Playing at the Bishop on October 30th! Don't miss it, a true original at the height of their power! The Cinematics - Love and Terror (Orchard) ................................................................... Glasgow's Cinematics have toured with the likes of Interpol, The Bravery and We Are Scientists. The album is about young lovers struggling to make their way in a world in meltdown. Its dark and brooding, yet full of sharp hooks and vocal melodies that would make Ian McCulloch proud. The Clientele - Bonfires on the Heath (Merge) ................................................................... A return to the Clientele's roots; the dreamlike suburban landscapes first encountered in the early singles, their trippy sense of menace stronger now. Back in London, they've drawn on older traditions of English folk, which exist here side by side with the band's more familiar bossa and pop elements. Instantly identifiable, they sound like no one else, although they are cited as an influence by bands as diverse as Spoon and Fleet Foxes. Betty Davis - [reissues pt 2] (Light in the Attic) ................................................................... Legendary 70s R&B diva Betty Davis is currently in the midst of a long-overdue resurgence. The charismatic funk/soul iconoclast's vintage work retains a timeless blend of sex and substance that establishes Davis as both a musical visionary and a world-class badass. Recorded in 1976, Is It Love or Desire remained unheard by the public for more than 3 decades. Features new liner notes, original album art, complete lyrics, full color booklet, rare photos, and interviews. Dead Man's Bones - s/t (Anti) ................................................................... Dead Man's Bones began recording, and decided that the songs needed the special creepiness and longing of massed children's voices to complete the sound. The Silverlake Conservatory Childrens Choir was brought in, and the album was born. Some of their songs reflect the music they listened to - a little bit of doo-wop, and artists such as the Shangri-Las, The Shaggs, Company Flow, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Bobby Vinton, Joy Division, Andrew Sisters and Daniel Johnston, to name a few. In addition, the artistic aesthetic of old Universal horror films, vaudeville music-hall numbers, and silent-screen melodramas infest the music. Mike Doughty - Sad Man Happy Man (ATO) ................................................................... Genius lyricist, musician, songwriter, poet, playwright, photographer, columnist, blogger, and true multi-media artist M Doughty has given into the pressure he has felt for years from fans to record an acoustic album again. It isn't entirely acoustic - Doughty's experimentation with drum machines and software adds a larger dynamic to the acoustic effort. For the track 'Doubly Gratified', Doughty went back to an old friend, Soul Coughing producer David Kahne. Comes bundled with a free live album only at Landlocked! Dutchess & the Duke - Sunset / Sunrise (Hardly Art) ................................................................... Sunset/Sunrise, the second full length from the Seattle duo is a slump-dodging opus that takes the dark, raw beauty of the band's debut and scales it up to distinctly luminescent heights, thanks to a graceful synthesis of painfully earned creative maturity and thoughtful production. Though minor chords and romantically morose lyrical yarns about misplaced affections and spiritual inertia remain touchstones, there is a freshing undercurrent of optimism throughout. Evangelista - Prince of Truth (Constellation) ................................................................... Carla Bozulich's newest project has been steadily gaining recognition for its complex beauty and fierce, raging appeals. Filled with adventurous risk taking that sometimes whispers and licks, sometimes pulls the listener so close that it is hard to breathe, sometimes screams in ritual satisfaction. Carla calls it Gospel Noise. Conventional song structure is mostly absent - the pieces are built from an extremely diverse set of sound sources, taking shape through layers of accumulation and juxtaposition, foreground and background, sudden shifts, suspensions and dissolutions - and Carla's commanding voice and brilliant lyrics. Orenda Fink - Ask the Night (Saddle Creek) ................................................................... Orenda Fink has sculpted a diverse & heralded career since Azure Ray. Through her debut and bands Art in Manila & O+S, she has remained a consistently creative force. Ask the Night is a reflection of the Southern cultural & familial roots that helped shape her aesthetic. Songs defy simple categorization & move between old-time waltz, country, folk and haunting bluegrass; instrumentation includes acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, accordion, upright bass & pump organ. The Gossip - Music for Men (Columbia) ................................................................... The genre-bending DIY post-punk rock trio Gossip bring a new level of lyrical power and musical sophistication to their ever-evolving, always-electrifying sound and sensibility on Music For Men, the indie group's first major label studio album. Hockey - Mind Chaos (Capitol) ................................................................... Hockey season starts with a tremendous buzz that began offside in the UK. Portland, Oregon's Hockey are set to drop the puck in North America with the release of Mind Chaos. The album is a remarkably cohesive debut, marked by their ingenious, assured song-craft typified by their New-Wave-Dance-Rock-flavored sound. Daniel Johnston - Is and Always Was (High Wire) ................................................................... Johnston has teamed with acclaimed musician Jason Falkner for his new album. Daniel's past few efforts have seen a shift away from the haunting lo-fi recordings that define him and a step forward into the studio. This new album promises to be a valiant display of solid melody and production arrangements. Falkner and Johnston have concentrated their talent and pop sensibilities into the creation of an album that contains the melodic dimensions and fundamental display of rock music that no other Daniel Johnston album has to date. Lake - Let's Build a Roof (K) ................................................................... Eli Moore & Ashley Eriksson's songwriting chemistry serves as Lake's foundation. This is a travelogue of the places they went, the stories they encountered on the way, and the memories that were unearthed from those experiences, be they good or bad. Their retro-jingly pop aesthetic is applied to thicker instrumentation and tempo shifts that fracture into kaleidoscopic sounds and harmonies. Catch em w/ Karl Blau at Russian Recording on October 24th! Mission of Burma - The Sound the Speed the Light (Matador) ................................................................... Their 4th LP is a departure from the roar of 2006's The Obliterati. Far more spacious and dynamic, it blasts off with the anthemic, catchy "1, 2, 3, Party!", a classic Burma rocker on a level with "This Is Not A Photograph" or "Certain Fate." Other tracks, such as "Feed," "Forget Yourself," and "Slow Faucet," are slow, hypnotic builders. "Good Cheer" is a burst of almost uncontainable joy that literally explodes from the speakers. Mountain Goats - Life of the World to Come (4AD) ................................................................... Mountain Goats have been making records since that mythical time when the term "tape-only label" didn't require any elaborate explanation. Recorded across three studios with three producers, the result is 12 stunning, original songs - all of which originate, one way or another, from the Bible, though none of the band, as of press time, had joined the Vineyard Fellowship. The Raveonettes - In and Out of Control (Vice) ................................................................... Denmark's Raveonettes have always hated repeating themselves so they set the bar really high for their new album In And Out Of Control. It's a strange mixture of modern and old, dark and happy, it's about rape, violence, lost love, suicide, not caring about what other people think of you and most importantly being mad and angelic! RIYL Jesus and Mary Chain w/ girl vocals. Sparklehorse + Fennesz - In the Fishtank (Konkurrent) ................................................................... Just two days in December were enough to record over 40 minutes of the sublime Fennesz and Sparklehorse combination. Prepared oddities and masses of inspiration make these recordings unique in their style and in this series in particular. Songs and soundscapes of rare beauty with stunning atmospherics, where abstract sounds and wellcrafted traditional song-structure meet and where acoustic instruments and electronics create outstanding ambience. Sufjan Stevens / Osso - Run Rabbit Run (Asthmatic Kitty) ................................................................... In 2001, Sufjan followed up his debut album with Enjoy Your Rabbit, a series of 14 instrumentals inspired by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Much later, Bryce Dessner (The National, Dark Was the Night compilation, Clogs) suggested that he re-arrange the entire Rabbit album for Osso, a string quartet that had previously contributed strings to Sufjan's Illinois. The result is Run Rabbit Run. Experience a live version of this phenomena on Sunday November 1st at the Indianapolis Museum of Art along with a screening of Sufjan's BQE film and Asthmatic Kitty artist and local fave, DM Stith. Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy (Matador) ................................................................... Philadelphia singer-songwriter Kurt Vile makes his Matador debut. A rich tapestry of rock and folk sounds, occasionally lo-fi, occasionally lustrous, hitting touchstones from Tom Petty to Street Legal-era Dylan to Spacemen 3 to Skip Spence. More diverse than its predecessor, it ranges from pounding rockers to gorgeous folky numbers. This is an absorbing and addictive record with layers and layers of discovery. Check him out at the Vid on Monday, October 12th! 100% of Landlocked employees agree: Recommended.
