Where's the time - how can we possibly attend all these great shows all the time? Check out our upcoming shows listing and pick your poison! There are some GREAT shows that we can't wait to announce very soon. On a sad note, Dan Auerbach has cancelled his show at the Bluebird. Now let's see what is exciting and new, shall we? ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/13/2009 ................................................................... Baroness - Blue Record (Relapse) ................................................................... Blue Record announces the re-awakening of Savannah's rock giants. The follow-up to Red Album, Blue has all the peaks and valleys, textures, and nuances that timeless records yield over repeated listens. Deep and dark; it overflows with gossamer melodies and striking, earnest riffs that have become the band's signature. Boston Spaceships - Zero to 99 (GBV) ................................................................... Quintessential Robert Pollard, a record that holds its own alongside widely acknowledged GBV classics. One gets the sense that Pollard is having the most fun he's had in decades, before he was pulled reluctantly from obscurity and thrust into the limelight with GBV in those heady, post-Nirvana mid-90s. The Boston Spaceships have not only landed; they're conquering the planet. The Boy Toys - Girls Like You 7" (Spin the Bottle) ................................................................... Some of you may remember Lafayette's finest as Ryan Pitts & the Boy Toys. According to Pitts he had pissed off so many venues that he wanted to drop his name so people thought it was different band. They are a perfect sound if you are looking for a 60s pop mixed with early power pop. Taking influences from the Undertones, Paul Collins Beat, Elton Motello, Dictators, Kinks, Searchers, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Exploding Hearts, New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Nobunny, etc. Christmas Island - Blackout Summer (In the Red) ................................................................... Christmas Island plays music that on the surface is happy and poppy. There is a dark undercurrent to their brand of lo-fi - it is joyous and almost twee while secretly depressed and deeply disturbed. Citing the Television Personalities, The Clean, and The Fall as influences, Christmas Island is Beach Boys-style, sunny Southern Cali pop by way of the late-70s/early-80s UK DIY scene. The Down-Fi - America Now (Gustav) ................................................................... In the mid 70s, Craig Bell was a member of Rocket from the Tombs. Though the group gained only minor notoriety during their time, they did contribute to the launch of acclaimed bands The Dead Boys and Pere Ubu. Now living in Indy, Craig has enlisted some of local degenerates, and fine musicians all, from The Dockers, Order of the Black Hand, The Relatives, and Hypnotic Velvet Propellers. They play old-old school style punk from the time before mohawks & niches. Bob Dylan - Christmas in the Heart (Columbia) ................................................................... His first Christmas album! In a commitment to ending hunger, all of his royalties from sales of Christmas In The Heart will be donated in perpetuity to Feeding America, guaranteeing that more than four million meals will be provided to over 1.4 million people in need in this country during this year's holiday season. 15 tracks including 'Here Comes Santa Claus', 'Winter Wonderland', 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' and many others. Deluxe version includes 5 holiday cards! Fanfarlo - Reservoir (Atlantic) ................................................................... Hailing from the UK, Sweden and Belgium. The literate pop songs bear more resemblance to the modern folk sounds of Sufjan, Beirut and Arcade Fire than the fashion-driven London scene where the band resides. Produced by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), Resevoir employs an array of instruments to create each lushly arranged track, including saws, clarinets, cellos, mandolins, ukuleles and melocias. Flaming Lips - Embryonic (Warner Bros) ................................................................... For the past two decades, The Flaming Lips has remained one of the world's most influential experimental creative forces in rock music. Each new release has been greeted with ecclesiastical anticipation and embraced by both critics and a loyal, ever-growing/evolving universal fan mass. It is with great pleasure that The Flaming Lips present their brand new double-album entitled, Embryonic. Also available in deluxe 2CD+DVD version. LP version in 2 weeks. Free lithograph w/ purchase while supplies last! Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs - Devil Do EP (Transdreamer) ................................................................... Their music is a lo-fi stew of blues, country and rockabilly, at once avant-garde and old-timey. Holly Golightly kicked off her musical career in Thee Headcoatees, the legendary all-girl garage band, closely affiliated with UK cult legend Billy Childish. She has appeared on multiple collaborative albums, including the title track for the Jim Jarmusch movie Broken Flowers with The Greenhornes. Har Mar Superstar - Dark Touches (Dilettante) ................................................................... After a 5 year hibernation, Har Mar is ready to unleash his new album Dark Touches on the masses. On this album, Har Mar delivers his most club-friendly collection of jams yet. His silky smooth croon and tongue-in-cheek lyrics lead a nonstop dance party that blends everything from synth-pop to R&B with ample hooks around every corner. The Heavy - The House That Dirt Built (Counter) ................................................................... With a background in the joys of sampling and a foreground in scuzzy guitar, bass and beaten up drums, with schizo music tastes and a West Country pace, theyve been building brick by dirty brick. A huge step forward from an already fantastic debut in Great Vengeance & Furious Fire. Horns of Happiness - Weathering Alterations (St Ives) ................................................................... Here we find the Bloomington band balancing its pounding rhythms and airy melodies to create a soundtrack piece from Shelley Harrison's installation piece "Don't Rain On My Parade". The band's normally speedy and structure-damaged tunes begin to stretch out, allowing repetition and space to create new moods. A moody, rocking, and nonsensical song cycle. Michael Hurley - Ida Con Snock (Gnomonsong) ................................................................... Hurley's debut was recorded for Folkways in 1965 on the same machine that taped Leadbelly's Last Sessions. But his songwriting talent hasn't gone unnoticed by a new generation of musicians. In recent years, he was invited to tour with Son Volt and Lucinda Williams. He's also shared bills with Smog and Palace Brothers, played with the Giant Sand rhythm section, and has appeared with (and been covered by) Vetiver and appeared on their records. His songs have also been covered by indie stars Cat Power and Yo La Tengo, among others. Vijay Iyer Trio - Historicity (ACT) ................................................................... Twice voted the #1 Rising Star Jazz Artist and Rising Star Composer in DownBeat's International Critics' Poll, Vijay is a largely self-taught creative musician grounded in the American jazz lexicon and drawing from a range of Western and non-Western traditions. Historicity is informed by the constant transformative relationship between past and present. "We're always shaped by history, even as we reach into the future" Iyer says. Los Lonely Boys - 1969 (Megaforce) ................................................................... A tribute to one of America's most hallowed years. With their signature blend of Latin rhythms, searing guitar leads, and impeccable harmonies, the band traces their artistic lineage through tracks like Santana's Evil Ways and The Beatles She Came In Through the Bathroom Window. Catch them on 10/22 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre with the legendary Alejandro Escovedo! MV & EE - Barn Nova (Ecstatic Peace!) ................................................................... MV & EE aspire to the sort of beautifully rewarding standard in their documented output that Sun Ra or The Grateful Dead achieved. It is with Ecstatic Peace! that their most consistent works have and again reach fans and with The Golden Road, their most constant band, here they jam. Thee Oh Sees - Dog Poison (Captured Tracks) ................................................................... Captured Tracks is proud to put out a full-length record by the prolific Oh Sees, and boy, is this one a monster. More layered and textural than previous Oh Sees releases while keeping all the typical John Dwyer punch, oomph and weirdness. Ten fantastic new songs packaged with a terrifying pencil-drawn sleeve. If you saw their awesome show last month, you know you need this. People Under The Stairs - Carried Away (Om) ................................................................... Unlike other Hip Hop artists, there are no outside producers or of-the-moment guest emcees. PUTS are a true independent act. Beats, rhymes, scratching, and chorus are all done by members Thes One and Double K themselves. Upbeat, crazy, balls to the wall and ridiculous. Recorded entirely on tape with tons of rock samples, distorted vox, lots of cussing, drum machines, delays, yelling, the works. Wrap that all up with nods to Tribe, Beasties, beer and Luther Vandross. Nick Swardson - Seriously, Who Farted? (Comedy Central) ................................................................... He is known as the roller-skating male prostitute Terry on Reno 911 and the stalker in the box office smash Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell among his trademark roles. He wrote and starred in the Adam Sandler produced films Grandma's Boy and Benchwarmers and had big supporting roles in Click and You Dont Mess With The Zohan. Swardson continues to sell out theaters from coast to coast and has just wrapped his first Sandler-produced film he wrote and starred in called Born To Be A Star. Thao - Know Better Learn Faster (Kill Rock Stars) ................................................................... Thao and the Get Down Stay Down are an awesome example of a great band making their success the old-fashioned way: by earning it. With only a locally-released full-length in her hometown of Richmond, VA under her belt, Thao put together an impressive backing band and began touring non-stop in 2007. When her debut full-length, We Brave Bee Stings and All was released on KRS, she continued touring, building her fanbase with an exciting, electric live show. Massive acclaim in the press and word of mouth propelled sales until she became the best-selling KRS artist in 2008 and the second-fastest selling artist in KRS hallowed history. Thomas Function - In the Valley of Sickness (Fat Possum) ................................................................... Thomas Function love punk rock, but they love country, blues, new wave, garage rock, and the shit happening up the street, too. It comes out sounding like a bunch of earnest, severe songs from the foothills of Huntsville, Alabama, full of anger, clarity, and bourbon. TV Mike & the Scarecrows - Spittin in Cursive (self) ................................................................... With one foot in the same Bay Area bayou that the Fogerty bros once walked and the other foot in, well, the same Bay Are bayou that birthed The Dead, these Bloomington transplants have been known to make a stir from Mendocino to the San Joaquin to every honky-tonk and hipster bar in between. With Swagger to spare they steer a course between Beachwood Sparks' cosmic-country and the more trad bluegrass leanings of The Avett Brothers, both with whom they have shared stages. Their songs paint simple stories of hearts and pines in the incandescent light of another Saturday night. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ................................................................... Andrew Bird - Anonanimal 7" (Fat Possum) Monsters of Folk - s/t LP (Shangri-La) Raincoats - s/t [LP reissue] (Kill Rock Stars) Also Released This Week ...................................................................
