Fantastical Fall Foliage Fellas! Do you have your Halloween costume ready? I am wavering between Balloon Boy's evil dad (natch) and undead Barney Frank. Hmmm! Remember- we accept candy, but if you trick or treat us, you might not like the dusty old easy-listening LP we give ya! Come check out the -amazing- Flight of the Conchords window display up now by our new favorite art student, Dever. Remember how dad's nudie mags use to arrive in the mail, plain paper wrapped - this is a great homage to that phenomena. While you're here, may as well check out the awesome new releases, too... ................................................................... NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 10/27/2009 ................................................................... Devendra Banhart - What Will We Be (WB) ................................................................... What Will We Be has a sunny, breezy feel with performances that evoke warm, lazy afternoons spent with good friends. The album is dominated by powerfully melodic, mid-tempo numbers played with relaxed expertise. Bonus litho and/or CDEP (non-album tracks) - free with purchase (while supplies last)! Bassnectar - Cozza Frenzy (Child's Play) ................................................................... An amalgamation of sound that combines dubstep, electro, hip-hop, and all styles of dirty digital bass-heavy music and smashes it all into a collision of wobbling, intense basslines, and hypnotic hide-and-seek adventures. Catch Bassnectar at the Bluebird on Nov. 5th! Bipolar Bear - Harlem Pripyat LP (Mexican Summer) ................................................................... Bipolar Bear is a part of the LA Smell scene that brought us No Age, Abe Vigoda, and Mika Miko, among other things. Their record is darker and less poppy than most of the releases by the aforementioned artists, but it's not terribly dissimilar. Harlem Pripyat is full of pop jams disguised by a wall of echo and distortion. Limited to 500 copies! The Breakaways (Nerves) - Walking Out On Love: The Lost Sessions (Alive) ................................................................... After spending nearly 30 years gathering dust in a closet The Breakaways makes its worldwide debut! Born in 1978 after the demise of The Nerves, this short lived combo was formed by Paul Collins and Peter Case, just prior to the formation of The Plimsouls and The Beat. This compiles all the band's known material, including studio recordings, demos, and acoustic rehearsals. Broadcast & The Focus Group - Investigate Witch Cults (Warp) ................................................................... Distorted guitar, off-tuned analog keyboards and barreling drums mixed with psych soundscapes and occasional disorientation are hallmarks of the UK-based group's sound. "Broadcast's songs are full of creaks, rumbles, saw-toothed distortion and untamed feedback. Each intrusion plotted, and they let the disruption build and sometimes take over a song in a billowing crescendo. Within the tick-tock riffs and pop melodies, the noise seems to break out like steam through volcanic fissures." - NY Times Rosie Flores - Girl of the Century (Bloodshot) ................................................................... With over half a century of hard roots-rabbling between them, Rosie Flores - the Rockabilly Filly, and Jon Langford - head Mekon, Waco Brother and conductor of the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, blast a sonic contrail stretching from Texas to Wales, from the dusty hill country to the dusky fetter cairns. These two long-celebrated musical forces, one with her cowboy boots firmly in the dance halls and the other with his work boots sloshing around puddles of beer in the pubs, come together for an album of spirited and soulful romps through the back roads of American music. Gov't Mule - By a Thread (Evil Teen) ................................................................... Lauded by Rolling Stone for successfully bringing the classic power-trio sound of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience into the 21st Century. Recorded largely at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in 2009, the album's origins are apparent from the first track, Broke Down On The Brazos, named after the nearby river, with a deep Texas stomp for the backbeat and featuring the trademark guitar-work of ZZ Top founder Billy Gibbons. Heavy Trash - Midnight Soul Serenade (Fat Possum) ................................................................... American rock revolutionaries Heavy Trash (Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray) continue their journey, delivering a stunning portrait of love and devotion gone good and gone wrong. On every track Verta-Ray's guitars pulsate, ooze, and percolate, while Spencer croons and twangs, shakes and shudders, with raw power and passion. Backed by their troupe of veteran tricksters, road dogs, blues wizards, punks, and evil geniuses, they have created a new kind of groove, a soundtrack suitable for haunted bordellos and hedonistic ho-downs. Lover - No Dreams Please EP (Fat Possum) ................................................................... Rich Crook (Reatards, Lost Sounds) with an all-star cast, including Billiams on drums, Talbot Adams (Dutch Masters / Black & Whites) on bass, John Whittemore on pedal steel, Adam Woodard (Tearjerkers) on organ, Laura Brown on flute, and Johnny Valiant as spiritual advisor. Hudson Mohawke - Butter (Warp) ................................................................... Is it turbo-soul? Neon R'n'B? Hologram rock? Kaleidoscope funk? Hudson Mohawke (aka 22-year-old Glaswegian Ross Birchard) has always been ahead of the curve - making mixtapes age 10, putting beats together on his Playstation age 12, winner of the UK DMC Championships age 14 (the youngest ever winner) - the latest step in this process is 'Butter' - 18 doses of melt-in-the-mouth R'n'B and breakneck beats with instant appeal. Pelican - What We All Come to Need (Southern Lord) ................................................................... What We All Come To Need is as punishing as it is calming. This is Pelican at their most inspired and sonically adept, delivering 50 minutes of weighty riffs and textured progressions in momentous succession. Features contributions by Greg Anderson (sunnO)))), Aaron Turner (Isis), Allen Epley (Shiner, Life and Times), and Ben Verellen (Helms Alee). R.E.M. - Live at the Olympia (WB) ................................................................... Double-disc set featuring 39 songs from their acclaimed 2007 working rehearsals in Dublin. R.E.M. set up camp at the venerable Olympia Theatre in Ireland's capital city and tested new material over five nights before passionate, capacity crowds. The special edition 2xCD+DVD set contains a film of the shows. The Swell Season - Strict Joy (Anti) ................................................................... The Swell Season is Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. In 2007, Once, a film about two people falling in love on the streets of Dublin, became a phenomenon. On the way to going gold, the Once soundtrack brought the Swell Season to the stage of the Academy Awards, where they won the Best Original Song. Now comes the follow-up album, Strict Joy and from the first track the musical magic audiences found in Once is back. Tegan & Sara - Sainthood (Sire) ................................................................... Tegan And Sara's sixth studio album addresses secular themes of devotion, delusion, and exemplary behavior in the pursuit of love and relationships. Inspired by emotional longing and the quiet actions we hope may be noticed by the objects of our affection, Sainthood is about obsession with romantic ideals. Young Prisms - s/t LP (Mexican Summer) ................................................................... Young Prisms are yet another sweet San Francisco group and their eponymous debut 12" EP has got us very excited for what's to come from this band. They do a really nice job of filling the gap between longer, more experimental, jams of Magic Lantern and Wooden Shjips and the lo-fi, melodic garage rock of bands like Fresh & Onlys and Thee Oh Sees. Limited to 500! The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) ................................................................... Bob Dylan - Self Portrait LP [reissue] (Sundazed) The Nerves - Live!
