NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 1/12/2009 .................................................. The Amazing - Code II 10" (Mexican Summer) .................................................. The Amazing make up two existing members of the well known Swedish band, Dungen. Like their label mates, they continue to make far out psych grooves, but this time around the singer sings in English making the song a bit more transferable across the sea. The b-side is an exclusive song only available on this 10" release. Blockhead - The Music Scene (Ninja Tune) .................................................. Blockhead AKA Tony Simon has worked with some of the key figures in independent hip hop: Slug (Atmosphere), Murs, Mike Ladd, Cage and of course he is Aesop Rock's producer of choice. On his 3rd album he takes his emotive, melancholic hip hop "stories without words" to another level. Campfires - Stormy Late Fall 7" (Mexican Summer) .................................................. Campfires plays rugged, outdoorsy lo-fi pop anthems, tailor-made for sunny autumn days. Their songs are short to the point, sweet-bitter postcards from bored teenage boys at camp. These are the songs that were conjured up from somewhere in mid America, where you spend your nights loitering in your cabin smoking weed with a peeling Jim Morrison poster and faded Who banner, while your buddies try and banter our some tunes on home-made instruments. Final Fantasy - Heartland (Domino) .................................................. Heartland exists. The 3rd Final Fantasy full-length and the first for Domino, it is the product of nine months work in four countries. Heartland is a fully orchestral record, designed to exist simultaneously as an album, a 45-minute piece of orchestral music and a set of songs for looped violin and voice. OK Go - Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky (Capitol) .................................................. The mind-bending band that gave us what is largely considered the decade's most viewed music video, the treadmillmanned "Here It Goes Again" is back. The super creative Ok Go still has the DIY attitude and artistic vision that millions fell in love with. Check out their new, innovative videos for "WTF?" and "This Too Shall Pass". Sam Lowry & Wayward Sons - Julianne 7" (Suburban Home) .................................................. "In the fall of 2006, William Elliott Whitmore and I were on tour with Lucero and Rocky Votolato. Having been friends for a few years and both rolling solo, we decided to ride together and it was over the course of a couple of all day drives that we came up with the idea to do a split 7", and to do one that was more than just one song by each of us. I think we both gravitated towards doing a murder ballad pretty quickly once we decided to try and make the two sides link up in some way." - Sam Lowry. Sam's song is from the viewpoint of the husband who is being hung for the murder of his wife, Will's (Wayword Sons) side is from the viewpoint of the lover who is on the run thinking that he's been blamed for it. Vampire Weekend - Contra (XL) .................................................. Like the first album, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and unique musical vision that sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound. Primarily recorded in New York with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend. First CD version features bonus CD of remixes. Laura Veirs - July Flame (Raven) .................................................. Laura Veirs' seventh album "July Flame," which Colin Meloy calls "the best album of 2010," explores the emotion of mid-summer. Drenched in wood smoke, sunlight, pollinators, pastoral dales, fireworks and warm nights, her lyrics explore the dichotomy between one's desire for permanence and security and the realization that such things rarely exist. Nowhere on the album is this inherent tension more crystallized than on the title track. Woodsman - Collages 12" (Mexican Summer) .................................................. From the green forests of Denver comes the debut album from Woodsman, an instrumental quartet with roots in nature, post-rock of the mid-90s Tortoise / Cerberus Shoal / A Minor Forest variety, and a sense of epic grandeur that ties the whole thing together. Killer from nose to nuts, with 19-minute monster "Mothershift" taking top honors; it reminds us that one ton of feathers is just as crushing as one ton of lead, if properly positioned. VA - Dengue Fever Presents: Electric Cambodia (Minky) .................................................. This music was recorded in the 1960s and early '70s soon after Cambodia became an independent nation. It was a period of rapid modernization that not only influenced music, but also architecture, sculpture, painting, dance and cinema. For many, it was Cambodia's own artistic renaissance, a time pointing to a hopeful future. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) .................................................. Kria Brekkan - Uterus Water 7" (Paw Tracks) Buraka Som Sistema - Sound of Kuduro 7" (FB2) Doom - Gazzilion Ear (T. Yorke / Dr Whodat? / Sitek remixes) 12" (Lex) The Field - Remixes 12" (Anti) Etienne Jaumet - Night Music LP (Domino) Norah Jones - Chasing Pirates remix EP (Blue Note) Ben Kweller - Sawdust Man 7" (Bloodshot) Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly LP (Plain) Rural Alberta Advantage - Drain the Blood 7" (Saddle Creek) Spoon - Written in Reverse 7" (Merge) Also Released This Week ..................................................
