Next Tuesday, March 16th from 9pm til ???. Beer specials abound - VHS movies aplenty playing from our personal archives! Ooh la la. .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/9/2009 .................................................. Alberta Cross - Broken Side of Time (ATO) .................................................. A cathartic kaleidoscope of influences, from Depeche Mode to The Band. Grand in its volume and vast in vision, it is an inspired set of electric songs that finds the intersection between the Verve, My Morning Jacket, and Neil Young. The album arrives on the heels of their acclaimed EP The Thief & the Heartbreaker, which earned the band UK touring slots with Oasis, The Shins and Bat For Lashes, and widespread critical praise. Besnard Lakes - Are the Roaring Night (Jagjaguwar) .................................................. Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night calls upon the influence of ELO and finer parts of the Alan Parsons Project in its orchestration. Still helped by ghosts of Beach Boys Past, the album is more Dennis Wilson than Brian, and more Peter Green Fleetwood Mac than Lindsay Buckingham. The album is a dark bliss-out that folds the eerie guitar epics of the Montreal band's breakthrough into a wall of affected drones and atmospherics, but with a toughened immediacy and grit that gives the form a much-needed shove over the cliffs, making for a haunting, provocative swan dive into the crushing tide. Broken Bells - s/t (Sony) .................................................. Broken Bells is The Shins' James Mercer & Danger Mouse. Featuring "The High Road" and "The Ghost Inside" Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all the instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse. The Chieftains feat Ry Cooder - San Patricio (Hear) .................................................. The musical souls of two nations, Ireland and Mexico, are movingly brought to life in San Patricio, the latest international collaboration by 6-time Grammy winners the Chieftains - the leading practitioners of Irish traditional music for the past 4 decades. The album features Ry Cooder and tells the nearly forgotten story of the brave San Patricio battalion - a downtrodden group of Irish immigrant conscripts who deserted the US Army in 1846 to fight on the Mexican side against the invading Yankees in the Mexican-American War. Also features Los Tigres Del Norte, Linda Ronstadt, Lila Downs, Los Folkloristas, Moya Brennan and Chavela Vargas. Dark Dark Dark - Bright Bright Bright (Supply & Demand) .................................................. Years ago we hosted a show by Woodcat and Blackthorns - Dark Dark Dark was an offshoot of those two bands and is still going strong! The precursor to their sophomore full-length - is a stunning 6-song vinyl EP. The chamber-folk sextet have yielded a lush and intoxicating follow-up. On the record, the band moves beyond past-tales of love, heartache and loneliness toward more rewarding and hopeful horizons. Daughters - s/t (Hydra Head) .................................................. Daughters are a 5-piece musical fistfight from Providence, RI. Bastard children of the New England hardcore and noise scenes, they frequently get mislabeled as grindcore. In truth, they present a new kind of spastic musical confrontation that exposes narrow-minded metal-by-numbers for what it is (boring) much to the satisfaction of fans that recognize and appreciate creative musical ambition. Frightened Rabbit - Winter of Mixed Drinks (FatCat) .................................................. With their 2nd LP The Midnight Organ Fight a fixture on 2008's Best Of The Year circuit, a fanbase increasing in both size and devotion, and multiple sold-out tours of ever-larger venues under their belts, the Glasgow based band are releasing their 3rd LP to towering expectations. This collection of ambitious, moving, and gloriously accomplished songs more than meets this challenge. Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer (Warp) .................................................. Produced by LA heavyweights Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer and Mainframe, this deep and compelling collection embraces aged Eastern influences, reanimated hip-hop and vintage psychedelia - laced with Gonjasufi's cryptic lyrics and captivating vocal delivery. Trading in both the murk of lo-fidelity vintage samples and the concentrated crispness of current west coast production, its both a roadmap to the riches of the distant past and a signpost to the future. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (Virgin) .................................................. The new Gorillaz empire is set on a strange floating island deep in the South Pacific at the furthest point from any land mass on the planet... Plastic Beach - an island made entirely of plastic, debris and the washed up remnants of humanity. Murdoc has assembled some others to join the band at Plastic Beach as musicians, players and contributors in this wonky, damaged Plastic opera. Mos Def, Bobby Womack, The Horrors, Lou Reed, Little Dragon, rappers Kano and Bashy, Mark. E. Smith, Syrian orchestras, global musicians and more. Jimi Hendrix - Valleys of Neptune (Legacy) .................................................. This brand-new, completely unreleased studio album features 12 unreleased studio recordings totalling over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix. Ten of these recordings were made between Feb and May, 1969, as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create the sequel to their 1968 double-album Electric Ladyland. The album features "Valleys Of Neptune," one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix's commercially unavailable recordings, and includes exciting 1969 arrangements of the classic signature songs "Red House," "Fire," and "Stone Free." Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix's inspired interpretations of "Bleeding Heart" (Elmore James) and Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love." jj - no3 (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. jj create R&B and balearic dub from the ghosts of lost lovers; pop as delicate as a fawn's nose across blades of frosted grass. It is the soundtrack for friends packed into the town square's tiniest tavern, their moontanned, apple-cheeked faces glowing, their dilated pupils filled with all the meaning and meaninglessness of a magic 8-ball. Their music is both carefree without carelessness, and self-aware without being self-conscious. With it, they build an ice bridge arching from Gothenburg into the heart of America. Catch them opening for the XX at the BCT on 4/6! The Knife - Tomorrow, In A Year (Mute) .................................................. Danish theater experimentalists Hotel Pro Forma invited The Knife to write music and libretto for their modern opera. The Knife, Swedish siblings Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer-Andersson (aka Fever Ray), engaged with the Danish mezzo soprano Kristina Wahlin Momme, the Danish actress Laerke Winther and the Swedish pop singer Jonathan Johanson for the vocal parts. These 90 minutes of music by The Knife and their collaborators Mt.Sims and Planningtorock are sparked by the pioneer of natural selection Charles Darwin and his revolutionary evolutionary findings and writings in his book On The Origin of The Species. Lawrence Arabia - Chanting Darling (Bella Union) .................................................. New Zealander James Milne, seems entirely out of place on a late winter release schedule, and not just because of the exotic stage name. It has all the sunny charm, and breezy ephemerality, of a late-August afternoon. As most of the songs prove, Milne can spin out catchy melodies without breaking a sweat. These delicate guitar-pop numbers are infused with 60s nostalgia and dashes of wry humour. Opening for Fanfarlo on 4/2 at the Bluebird! Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Brutalist Bricks (Matador) .................................................. Ted is back after a 2 year break with his 4th album and Matador debut, The Brutalist Bricks. This extraordinarily assured, wide ranging album explores new ground for Ted, showcasing his singer-songwriter side while remaining emotionally and energetically true to his punk roots. From the thrilling opener and video track "The Mighty Sparrow" to the apocalyptic "Last Days," startling influences reveal themselves. Liars - Sisterworld (Mute) .................................................. Sisterworld is Liars own space, completely devoid of influence, somewhere remote from the false promises and discarded dreams amassed in LA. In it they explore the underground support systems created to deal with loss of self to society. Deluxe 2CD version includes remixes from Atlas Sound, Blonde Redhead, TV on the Radio, Thom Yorke, Devendra Banhart, Melvins and more! The Morning Benders - Big Echo (Rough Trade) .................................................. Recorded in San Francisco and mixed in Brooklyn, Chris Chu and Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) produced it in eleven days. On the twelfth day they rejoiced. There are 10 tracks on Big Echo which The Morning Benders think is the best length for an album. It should also be said that Big Echo is made of some of the most glorious pop music you'll hear this year or any year. Josh Rouse - El Turista (Yep Roc) .................................................. El Turista's sultry song cycle shuffle seamlessly in tandem with Getz/Gilberto and Paul Simon's Graceland, albums as boldly surprising in their eras as El Turista is in this one. A new direction for the critically acclaimed artist, while offering the musical sophistication and emotional depth Rouse's devoted constituents have come to expect. Simple, Spanish-influenced street rhythms unfurl into epic versions of Guaraldi-like jazz numbers, resulting in yet another career defining touchstone and a genre-blending album that is as sophisticated as it is infectious. Titus Andronicus - The Monitor (XL) .................................................. The Monitor is a concept album about the Civil War, "sort of", says singer Patrick Stickles. The usual suspects from the world of Titus Andronicus were all in attendance, as well as members of Ponytail, Wye Oak, Vivian Girls, and the Hold Steady. It was mastered by Greg Calbi - whom the band chose because he is the only person alive who can claim involvement in both The Chemistry of Common Life by Fucked Up and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell by Meat Loaf! VA - Secondhand Sureshots DVD (Stones Throw) .................................................. Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab Dublab directors Bryan "Morpho" Younce & Mark "frosty" McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material. Preservation Hall Jazz Band - An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall (Preservation) .................................................. Over the last year, more than 20 of American music's most exciting artists traveled to Preservation Hall in New Orleans to collaborate with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on New Orleans repertoire. The end result is a timeless and joyous celebration of New Orleans Music. New recordings from Tom Waits, Andrew Bird, Del McCoury, Yim Yames and more! Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave (Lost Highway Records) .................................................. American VI: Ain't No Grave, produced by Rick Rubin, is deeply elegiac, spiritual and is an achingly personal and intimate statement, as, from the end of the line, Cash looks back on a most extraordinary life. The songs are drawn from all over the musical landscape and include Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times," Ed McCurdy's "Last Night I had the Strangest Dream" and the never before heard Cash original, "I Corinthians: 15:55," written over the last three years of his life. Yeasayer - Odd Blood (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. While their first record, All Hour Cymbals, was conceived in total artistic isolation, constant touring forced Yeasayer to finally engage with their contemporaries. If All Hour Cymbals was Yeasayer's attempt at global and ambient cultural mash-up then their new album, ODD BLOOD, takes place in an off-world colony sometime after the Singularity. Yeasayer have plunged into the craft of pop music, and the exercise has paid off. Jaguar Love - Hologram Jams (Fat Possum) .................................................. Blood Brothers may have betrayed their blood oath by breaking up, but the spirit of that raucous Seattle act lives on in Jaguar Love. Jaguar Love is comprised of ex-blood brothers Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato. Having already caught the eye of Queens of the Stone Age, who took them on tour for a spell last year, Jaguar Love has since inspired the folks at Fat Possum Records, who have signed them. Adam Green - Minor Love (Fat Possum) .................................................. After his work with the Moldy Peaches was done, Adam Green recorded 6 solo albums, including the latest, "Minor Love." The album showcases a tender side of the often arrogant and emotionally unavailable bully/singer, Green. In a total state of isolation, Green attempted to play nearly all the instruments on the record, due to incurable social phobias which plagued him. People may be shocked by how talented Adam Green is. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
