This saturday - 5pm - gimme good lovin - FREE! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 3/30/2009 .................................................. Mulatu Astatke - Mulatu Steps Ahead (Strut) .................................................. This is the first new solo album by Mulatu since the 1980s! A rich album of Ethio sounds, perfect for all fans of world music, jazz and the outstanding selling Ethiopiques series. The album explores new directions in fusions of Western jazz with Ethiopian modes, moving forward the pioneering sound Mulatu developed during the 60s and 70s. Tracks were recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, with contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, members of The Heliocentrics and some of the UK's leading jazz and African players during the final sessions in London. Black Breath - Heavy Breathing (Southern Lord) .................................................. For this, their debut LP, the band went into Kurt Ballous' God City studios in Salem, Mass. The end result of those monumental sessions is a recording much darker, heavier and more brutal than anything they have done before. Not since the mid-80s when bands like Motorhead, Metallica and Discharge were giving metal heads bangovers has brutality been so infectious. The decidedly more Death Metal direction of Heavy Breathing is a extremely bold move that will definitely set them apart from the rest. Black Tambourine - s/t (Slumberland) .................................................. New retrospective includes everything ever released by the late 80s/early 90s DC band that included members of Velocity Girl. Features 4 new songs that the band reunited to record, including Buddy Holly and Suicide covers. They released only a handful of songs their 2-year lifetime, but Black Tambourine has been hugely influential. Conceived as an explicitly pop band, they wore their influences on their sleeves: Jesus and Mary Chain, of course, but also folks like Phil Spector, Smokey Robinson, Love, The Ramones, Shop Assistants, Pastels, Orange Juice and the list goes on... Bonobo - Black Sands (Ninja Tune) .................................................. Simon Green (AKA Bonobo) returns with his fourth and finest album, Black Sands. Losing none of his epic emotionalism, his control of texture and color and his subtlety, Black Sands sees Green making some of his most contemporary sounding music to date. RIYL Cinematic Orchestra, Herbaliser. Dum Dum Girls - I Will Be (Sub Pop) .................................................. I Will Be is the debut full-length by the Dum Dum Girls. Recorded at home by Dee Dee and mixed with the help of Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids, Blondie, Go-Gos and The Raveonettes), I Will Be is a decidedly medium-fi record. Just under 30 minutes with 11 songs, it's a short tribute to love, fun and the classic pop form of the 60s girl groups and early punk rockers. RIYL Vaselines, Vivian Girls, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, C86. Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Wet Cement 7" (Mexican Summer) .................................................. The first Mexican Summer release from these Aussie Garage-punk sensations. ECSR have managed to captivate both the indie crowd and the garage/Terminal Boredom crowd with incredible songs, startling energy and timeless, distinctive songwriting. Their spiky sound and Brendan's matter-of-fact vocals were like a fresh, cool breeze that blew away the stagnation and cobwebs of what punk had become at the end of US tyranny. Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs - Medicine County (Transdreamer) .................................................. Holly Golightly kicked off her musical career in Thee Headcoatees, the legendary all-girl garage band, closely affiliated with UK cult legend Billy Childish. She spent 8 years as a Headcoatee, and during those years released her first solo record in 1995. She has appeared on multiple collaborative albums, including the title track for the Jim Jarmusch movie Broken Flowers with The Greenhornes. Their music is a lo-fi stew of blues, country and rockabilly, at once avant-garde and old-timey. The Living Sisters - Love to Live (Vanguard) .................................................. LA-based singer/songwriters Inara George (The Bird and the Bee), Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) and Eleni Mandell have cumulatively spent decades writing, recording and singing around the world with their respective groups. Now the accomplished trio has finally recorded their debut album as The Living Sisters. With this debut, they embrace their mutual love of country, soul, gospel, jazz and other traditional styles of music. Gorgeous harmonies highlight poetically charged lyrics and sing-along choruses backed by retro pop instrumentation. Meth, Ghost and Rae - Wu Massacre (Def Jam) .................................................. For the first time, three of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan's most dynamic emcees step out together to create a supergroup with a distinctly shaolin sound. Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon have banded together on their new album of street bangers, Wu Massacre. Joined by fellow Wu-Tang alums Inspectah Deck and Cappadona on several tracks, and featuring production by RZA and Mathematics, Meth, Ghost and Rae's Wu Massacre is guaranteed to satisfy the legions of fans in the Wu Army. Viva L'American Death Ray Music - Behold! A Pale Horse 12" (Mexican Summer) .................................................. Brainchild of Memphis native Nicholas Ray, Viva L'American Death Ray Music has been chugging along since the late 90s, pushing against the walls of VU-inspired garage choogle into abstract dimensions reminiscent of the Fall, and moreover of late 70s/early 80s UK DIY rock, punk, and experimental music. Clouds of synth, hiss and fuzz gracefully frame their hybrid glam/punk/dub sounds across 5 full-lengths. Four tracks packaged in a rad faux-Folkways package. Wooden Shjips - Vol. 2 (Sick Thirst) .................................................. Strap in for travels beyond the galaxy to tranced-out cosmic bliss! The second compilation of hard-to-find Wooden Shjips tracks. Vol. 2 digs deep to collect the band's Sub Pop and Mexican Summer singles, two European tour singles, and a track from Yeti magazine, for nearly 44 minutes of fuzzed-out psych jams. Not just for completists, Vol. 2 contains the essential live standards "Loose Lips," "Death's Not Your Friend (Live)", and "I Hear the Vibrations (E-Z Version)," plus savage covers of Neil Young's "Vampire Blues" and Serge Gainsbourg's "Contact." Preservation Hall Jazz Band - An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall (Preservation) .................................................. Over the last year, more than 20 of American music's most exciting artists traveled to Preservation Hall in New Orleans to collaborate with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on New Orleans repertoire. The end result is a timeless and joyous celebration of New Orleans Music. New recordings from Tom Waits, Andrew Bird, Del McCoury, Yim Yames and more! Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave (Lost Highway Records) .................................................. American VI: Ain't No Grave, produced by Rick Rubin, is deeply elegiac, spiritual and is an achingly personal and intimate statement, as, from the end of the line, Cash looks back on a most extraordinary life. The songs are drawn from all over the musical landscape and include Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times," Ed McCurdy's "Last Night I had the Strangest Dream" and the never before heard Cash original, "I Corinthians: 15:55," written over the last three years of his life. Yeasayer - Odd Blood (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. While their first record, All Hour Cymbals, was conceived in total artistic isolation, constant touring forced Yeasayer to finally engage with their contemporaries. If All Hour Cymbals was Yeasayer's attempt at global and ambient cultural mash-up then their new album, ODD BLOOD, takes place in an off-world colony sometime after the Singularity. Yeasayer have plunged into the craft of pop music, and the exercise has paid off. Jaguar Love - Hologram Jams (Fat Possum) .................................................. Blood Brothers may have betrayed their blood oath by breaking up, but the spirit of that raucous Seattle act lives on in Jaguar Love. Jaguar Love is comprised of ex-blood brothers Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato. Having already caught the eye of Queens of the Stone Age, who took them on tour for a spell last year, Jaguar Love has since inspired the folks at Fat Possum Records, who have signed them. Adam Green - Minor Love (Fat Possum) .................................................. After his work with the Moldy Peaches was done, Adam Green recorded 6 solo albums, including the latest, "Minor Love." The album showcases a tender side of the often arrogant and emotionally unavailable bully/singer, Green. In a total state of isolation, Green attempted to play nearly all the instruments on the record, due to incurable social phobias which plagued him. People may be shocked by how talented Adam Green is. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
