We pulled out 2 names for our Daptone giveaway - a pair of tickets to the Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings show at the Vogue in Indianapolis on Sunday, May 23rd, and an autographed LP by Sharon herself of their new album, I Learned the Hard Way. And the winners are.... Marcia Humphress and Graham McKeen. Thanks to all who purchased the CD or LP and keeping soul alive in 2010! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 4/20/2009 .................................................. The Apples in Stereo - Travellers in Space and Time (Yep Roc) .................................................. The Apples' new album and 7th studio effort, Travellers in Space and Time is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed hit album New Magnetic Wonder. Travellers finds the studio-obsessed indie rockers continuing the hook-heavy pop mastery they achieved on NMW. Well over a year in the making, the new material recasts the Apples' signature pop sounds in chrome-plated futurism, all while adding a dance-driven vibe channeling ELO, Barry Gibb, Wild Honey-era Beach Boys and Off The Wall-era Michael Jackson. Caribou - Swim (Merge) .................................................. With its absorption of club culture sounds weaved within subtle pop frameworks, Swim is Caribou's masterpiece - the record he's wanted to bring to fruition for as long as he's been making music. A Canadian from small-town Ontario now based in England, Snaith has been a leading figure in electronic music over the past decade. He surprised critics and fans with 2007's Andorra, a brilliant, electro-tinged pop breakthrough with a timeless grace that made most year-end "Best of" lists and won Canada's prestigious Polaris Music Prize. Roky Erickson & Okkervil River - True Love Cast Out All Evil (Anti) .................................................. Legendary musician Roky Erickson triumphantly returns with his first new album in 14 years. Produced by Will Sheff from Okkervil River, and featuring his band backing. The record is comprised largely of unreleased songs that Austin native Erickson wrote throughout his decades-long career detailing with heart-breaking candor a harrowing life that has included shock treatment, imprisonment, mental illness, and irreversible loss. Gotan Project - Tango 3.0 (XL) .................................................. Gotan Project's new album Tango 3.0 fluidly steps back on the dance floor where their last album Lunatico left off. Group members Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph Mueller, and Eduardo Makaroff have constructed yet another beautiful melange of traditional Argentinean tango, dub, jazz and electronics. Tango 3.0's 11 tracks are at once seductive and propulsive. Kings Go Forth - The Outsiders Are Back (Luaka Bop) .................................................. Kings Go Forth's popularity is due in large part to its raw and retro R&B sound, which employs funky backbeats, big horns, three-part vocals, and naturalistic, lo-fi production. You might remember them from an epic performance at the Video Saloon a few months back - now they are signed to David Byrne's Luaka Bop imprint and are ready to take on the world! Recommended. The Kissaway Trail - Sleep Mountain (Bella Union) .................................................. The band's first album sparked enormous excitement in Europe with England's The Independent having named their 2007 album "debut album of the year." Sleep Mountain was produced by Interpol and The National producer Peter Katis, who drew forth towering sound from the quintet, best evidenced on the epic and sweeping "Don't Wake Up." Described as a, "gutsier Pains of Being Pure at Heart" by ever-respected music publication NME. Kate Nash - My Best Friend Is You (Fiction) .................................................. From the first lines of the ebullient opener Paris, it is apparent that Ms Nash has made the transition from bedroom blogger and ingenue to young woman on a mission. Kate writes her own songs - she plays piano, guitar, bass, drums - and producer Bernard Butler (London Suede) found a way of bringing the songs to life without losing any of her idiosyncratic personality. The result; an album that is eclectic, adventurous, and honest. Plants and Animals - La La Land (Secret City) .................................................. It's not easy to label the kind of music Plants and Animals make, but it's easy for it to feel instantly familiar. Maybe that's because they record to tape, and their records sound like they could have been made in 1972. Their latest offering, La La Land, is louder, and tougher, but also showcases them their smoothest and most cohesive to-date. Inspired by a rediscovery of electric guitars, amplification and fuzz pedals, it takes us up and away from Parc Avenue's Montreal-in-the-summer vibe, and out into the rock n' roll ether. Prizzy Prizzy Please - Chroma Cannon (Joyful Noise) .................................................. With a 30th century aesthetic, the album rockets through hyperactive hits that hope to imbue melodic noise punk (reminiscent of Parts and Labor, Lightning Bolt) with the spirit of fourth-quarter pump-up jams by Van Halen and the E Street Band. Though Chroma Cannon prominently displays Prizzy Prizzy Please's technical prowess, the songs are thematically fixated on science fantasy and thoughtful, unpretentious humor. Prizzy Prizzy Please, presently stationed in a Chicago basement, got their start in the basements of Bloomington. They have no guitarist, no decent equipment, and are fronted by a timid alto saxophonist who howls like Bon Scott. Xavier Rudd - Koonyum Sun (Salt) .................................................. Xavier Rudd has developed a strong reputation for playing at music festivals and concerts in Australia and North America. Many of his songs incorporate socially conscious themes, such as environmentalism and the rights of the Aboriginal peoples. In addition to playing the didgeridoo in many of his songs, he has also included Aboriginal vocals in some of his songs. The Slackers - The Great Rocksteady Swindle (Hellcat) .................................................. The Slackers return, bigger than ever before, to usher their next chapter with some of the best music of their storied career. The album retains the band's unforgettable mix of ska, rocksteady, reggae, soul, jazz, dub and garage rock while also adding fresh and vibrant elements to the music. For the past two decades the band has been spreading their signature "Jamaican rock n roll" sound around the world, winning fans over with their fervent live shows and coveted studio albums. Sweet Apple - Love & Desperation (Tee Pee) .................................................. Of course, the band - Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis (drums/guitar/vocals); Cobra Verde's Tim Parnin (guitar); John Petkovic (vocals/guitar) and Witch's Dave Sweetapple (bass/vocals) - eschews the whole "supergroup" tag. The 12-song album casts a wide net, reflecting the disparate sounds of all their bands: catchy power-pop, crushing rock and wounded ballads. Recorded in Cleveland and Massachusetts, "Love and Desperation" was mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and The Hold Steady) and Don Depew (Cobra Verde, GBV). Rufus Wainwright - All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (Decca) .................................................. Rufus Wainwright marks his 6th studio album, written and produced by Wainwright with two songs produced and one co-produced by Pierre Marchand, who also mixed the album. The two last collaborated on Rufus' Poses album. The album is hugely personal, deeply emotional and all channeled through Rufus' fingers, his voice and a piano. Also featured are three Shakespeare sonnets which Rufus has gorgeously crafted in his very own inimitable style. They are selected from 24 pieces of music that Rufus wrote for a theatrical production, Sonette with director Robert Wilson in Berlin last year. ATO Records is pleased to announce the release of The Drive-By Truckers' label debut, The Big To-Do. The album, which will be the band's 10th in their 13-year career, is scheduled to be released March 16, 2010. The Big To-Do features 13 new tracks from the Drive-By Truckers and was produced by their long time producer, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). "It's very much a rock album," says Patterson Hood of the Trucker's upcoming release. "Very melodic and more rocking than anything we've done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera." The Whigs - In The Dark (ATO) .................................................. With their stunning third album, In The Dark, the Whigs have gone widescreen. Bursting with energy, emotion, and unpredictable experimentation, the Athens, GA-based trio tear open the artistic envelope, bringing both nuance and eclectics strength to songs like "Hundred/Million" and the raucous first single, "Kill Me Carolyne." In The Dark is both atmospheric and ambitious, without losing the pedal-to-the-metal power that earned them universal praise as one of America's finest young rock-n' roll bands. She and Him - Volume Two (Merge) .................................................. She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are a comfortable and complementary musical pair; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. All songs (except  4 and 7) were written by Zooey Deschanel and produced by M. Ward. Autechre - Oversteps (Warp) .................................................. Oversteps shows an oft-overlooked playfulness and a rarely mentioned musicality that comes to the fore-front, in what could be described as their most accessible work to date. Between the layers of cold digital pings and fuzzed out tones, there are true chord changes and warm soundscapes being built from the ground up. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - I Learned the Hard Way (Daptone) .................................................. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This spring the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
