NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/8/2010 .................................................. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today (4AD) .................................................. With roots going back as far as 1996, the West Coast act are as sublime as they are surreal with a sound loaded with hazy nostalgia and a fiercely experimental pop palette. Ariel Pink has established himself as one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, a visionary producer in the vein of Joe Meek and Ariel's hero and previous collaborator, tape deck dilettante, R. Stevie Moore, creating a world through certain production touches. Blitzen Trapper - Destroyer of the Void (Sub Pop) .................................................. Over the course of their four full-length albums to date, including their revelatory 2008 Sub Pop release Furr, Portland, OR's Blitzen Trapper have gained a growing international audience. The band's continuing exploration of American music has earned them notice ranging from Rolling Stone magazine to late-night network television to Yo Gabba Gabba. Destroyer of the Void takes Blitzen Trapper further than ever before, building on the band's seamless marriage of the familiar and the fantastic. The Cure - Disintegration [20th Annv edition] (Rhino) .................................................. Robert Smith compiled, produced, and supervised the mastering of this 3-CD collection, which covers the evolution from demos and rehearsals to studio and stage. Disc1 contains newly remastered versions of the original album. Gathering 20 unreleased tracks, the disc2 trawls through Smith's home recordings to find early instrumental demos. The band can also be heard rehearsing and arranging various instrumental versions as well as studio outtakes of several other tracks. As well it contains 4 unreleased songs: 'Noheart,' 'Esten,' 'Delirious Night' and a cover of Judy Collins' Pirate Ships. For disc3, Smith remixes and expands 'Entreat,' a live album recorded in 1989 at Wembley Arena during The Cure's sold-out Prayer Tour to create a complete contemporary live version of Disintegration. Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions (Partisan) .................................................. The songwriting project of John McCauley, a singer/songwriter based out of Providence, Rhode Island. Thanks to the help of Brendon "Viking Moses" Massei, McCauley has been ferociously zig-zagging across the United States, hitting all the sparsely attended basement shows, smoky bars, upscale joints, small to medium size festivals, and everything in between, including a handful here in Bloomington. McCauley takes his cues from legendary songwriters such as Townes Van Zant, Neil Young and Ritchie Valens. Delta Spirit - History from Below (Rounder) .................................................. After touring non-stop to support their debut, the band came off the road and wrote and recorded their new album in just a few short months with the help of Eli Thomson and Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket) at Prairie Sun studios, the same place Tom Waits has recorded almost exclusively since 1991. History from Below showcases a road-tested band that picks right up where Ode To Sunshine left off, with 11 new rocking, soulful songs, including the driving lead single "Bushwick Blues" and the anthemic "Golden State." Here We Go Magic - Pigeons (Secrely Canadian) .................................................. Here We Go Magic is a 5-piece band fronted by Luke Temple. They originally came together in New York in early 2009 through a series of chance encounters, overheard conversations and supernatural occurrences. You might also know them as the amazing opening act for the Grizzly Bear show at the Buskirk or from the hot tub at Boulders. The single, Collector, rings with a krauty aplomb and is an instant summer classic. Hot Hot Heat - Future Breeds (Dangerbird) .................................................. On Future Breeds, Hot Hot Heat returns to its roots both metaphorically and literally with a hot-wired and proud party album throbbing with spontaneity and creativity. When the band began writing Future Breeds, front man Steve Bays, along with band mates Paul Hawley and Luke Paquin, sought to recapture the energy and sheer love for the art form that drove the late-nineties Vancouver punk scene from which the band emerged. Konono No.1 - Assume Crash Position (Crammed) .................................................. Recorded in their home of Kinshasa, Congo by Congotronics producer Vincent Kenis, the long-anticipated follow-up to Konono's debut sees their trademark junkyard sonics & relentlessly hypnotic percussive grooves (as created using thumb pianos & drums made from scrap metal & disused car parts) further elevated with electric guitars & bass (played by neighbourhood musicians from a young Konono covers band!) as well as a wider range of vocalists, + guest appearances from guitarist Manuaku Pepe Felly & fellow Congotronics band Kasai Allstars. Mojo Magazine - Tom Waits cover (Mojo) .................................................. It's MOJO's 200th issue! And who better to celebrate this most auspicious occasion with than Tom Waits? So, from the mind of one of the planet's true originals comes this special issue anniversary issue edited by Tom, including a 15 track CD compiled by he! Includes an interview w/ Harry Belafonte, Hank III and more Tom Waits than you can shake a stick at! Nada Surf - If I Had A Hi-Fi (Mardev) .................................................. A covers album full of inspired, unexpected choices. From avant-pop Kate Bush to power-pop classicist Dwight Twilley. There are some intriguingly obscure numbers, like Spanish band Mercromina's "Evolution" and under-documented Bill Fox's "Electrocution". Also features tracks by The Go-Betweens, Arthur Russell, Spoon, and more. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - s/t (Hollywood) .................................................. Like a modern-day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa Sticky Fingers. The proof is there for all to hear on the band's 3rd album and marks an artistic breakthrough for a vital young band caught in the act of fulfilling its immense promise. Ratatat - LP 4 (XL) .................................................. Ratatat's new album is the next step forward on the work that Evan Mast and Mike Stroud began on LP3. It was conceived during the creative streak that began during the LP3 sessions at Old Soul studios, in rural Upstate NY. Since then the band have toured relentlessly; visiting countries such as Vietnam, China and Cambodia on the one hand, and selling out bigger venues than ever before on the other. Suckers - Wild Smile (French Kiss) .................................................. If you can make it past David Bowie's codpiece, Labyrinth really is a brilliant movie. Just ask Suckers. The way they see it, Wild Smile is more than just a cracked prism of indie pop, a buzz-stirring debut that causes spontaneous sing-alongs and a nagging need to seize the day. It's a looking glass soundtrack to Labyrinth itself. Tokyo Police Club - Champ (Mom & Pop) .................................................. The Ontario quartet was hailed by Rolling Stone as "poised to become the biggest Canadian export since Molson," and Champ delivers on that promise. Produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, The Vines) and lead by the infectious new single "Wait Up (Boots of Danger)," Champ is a huge musical step forward for the band. For a limited time, buy their new CD and get their debut, Elephant Shell for a super nice-price! Villagers - Becoming a Jackal (Domino) .................................................. Young Dubliner Conor J. O'Brien is the mastermind behind the 11 varied, subtle, complex and plain gorgeous songs that are Becoming A Jackal. Conor played all the instruments (except strings and french horn) and Becoming A Jackal was recorded in his home studio. Becoming A Jackal is a startling intro to the gripping poetry and melodic depth of Conor J. O'Brien. Wailing Wall - Low Hanging Fruit (JDub) .................................................. Multi-instrumentalist Jesse Rifkin brings you a vibrant dreamscape with an expanded palate of sitar, singing saw, and pipe organ. Produced by Tim Fite, it pairs classic folk-roots with the sounds of devotional music from the international spectrum. The Wailing Wall has been joined live and on record by members of Titus Andronicus, Pepi Ginsberg and Camera Obscura. Jackson Browne & David Lindley - Love Is Strange (Inside) .................................................. Jackson Browne & David Lindley's Love Is Strange is a chronicle of their 2006 Tour of Spain, performing in Madrid, Barcelona, Oveido and Sevilla. The experience is expressed by Jackson Browne as "a CD of some recorded moments, or perhaps a bridge, or a small door, between a life lived mostly in America and time spent with some really good friends in Spain." Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions (Partisan) .................................................. Recorded late last year at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York, The Black Dirt Sessions is a deeply personal record from Deer Tick and most especially from lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley. It is the sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out. "The Country-rock breakthrough of the year" - Rolling Stone Jamie Lidell - Compass (Warp) .................................................. Recorded in LA, NY and Canada, Compass is Jamie's most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It's got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it's sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It's the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator. Jamie's fellow travelers on Compass include Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. The Jayhawks - The Bunkhouse Album (Lost Highway) .................................................. The Jayhawks' Bunkhouse Album is the debut from the alt-country pioneers originally released in 1986 on Bunkhouse Records with a pressing of only 2,000 vinyl copies. This hard-to-find album is finally available on CD and again on vinyl for the first time in nearly 25 years. The Jayhawks features Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Norm Rogers. After listening, it's clear why the band became a catalyst in what would be coined "alt-country". Tift Merritt - See You On the Moon (Fantasy) .................................................. See You On the Moon is Tift Merritt's most visceral work to date. ÊAt heart, the album is a profoundly focused Tift doing what she does best better than she ever has - poignant writing and performing welded to the steady pursuit of new places. ÊFor this project, Merritt recruited producer Tucker Martine, best known for his work with The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, & others. ÊJoining the 'Moon' sessions were, among others, celebrated pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz and My Morning Jacket's Jim James. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
