Whoa, what an epic weekend of instores - Huge thanks to The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band for blowing the roof off on saturday and showing the grandkids and the grandparents how it's done! The Upland Brew was keeping the heat at bay and smiles stretched from wall to wall. Sunday, Damien Jurado played an intimate set of solo acoustic tunes prior to his full band show and the place was packed and sweaty and quiet - another fantastic time. Thanks to all who came out and braved the heat! Monday, June 21st, Landlocked Music presents: New Music Happy Hour, plus a great show from Brothers Gross, Burnt Ones, City Sweethearts and Vacation Club. Doors at 8pm, $4 at The Bishop. Free stuff, great tunes, drink specials, hot jamz, good times. Get their early! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 6/15/2010 .................................................. Lewis Black - Stark Raving Black (Comedy Central) .................................................. Compelled by his passions and discontentedness with the absurdities of the world, Lewis erupts in a hand-shaking, body-trembling, spewing of diatribe-laced dialectic comedy. Focusing on the personal and the political, Lewis guides his audience through a catalogue of the woes of the world, from the absurdities of aging (60 is NOT the new 40!) to the pitfalls of becoming a "mainstream" comedian to the insanity of Washington and Wall Street. Devo - Something for Everybody (WB) .................................................. More than 3 decades after the release of its visionary debut, 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo,' and a full 20 years since its last studio album, Devo is back! The long rumored, wildly anticipated album features the band's classic line-up - joined by drummer Josh Freese. Though the songs are built on Devo's signature mechanized swing, the recording and presentation of the album saw the band experimenting with an entirely new approach. A series of studies were conducted through their website to help the band with its creative decisions, from color selection to song mixes. Foals - Total Life Forever (Sub Pop) .................................................. Antidotes, the acclaimed debut album by UK quintet Foals, won them attention, and the opportunity to evolve in a space of their own. Two years on from that impressive introduction, Total Life Forever is the sound of a band settling into and surveying the decay of old protocols. Written primarily in the basement of their Oxford HQ and recorded in Gothenburg, Total Life Forever is an album as persuasive emotionally as Antidotes was physically. Gaslight Anthem - American Slang (Side One Dummy) .................................................. The Gaslight Anthem rose out of the fertile punk scene of New Brunswick, NJ, flaunting a unique style that melded the influence of Bruce Springsteen, Wilson Pickett, and various Motown groups with the rough, emotional grit of Hot Water Music and Jawbreaker. American Slang will surely raise them to the next level. Set of lyric postcards w/ purchase. The Like - Release Me (Downtown) .................................................. Collectively, The Like's mission was to create the lost 60s girl group record of their dreams, and yours. With a little help from Mark Ronson, Alex Greenwald, and the soul and studio sophistication of Dap-Kings Tommy Brenneck and Homer Steinweiss, The Like have happened upon a sure classic. It's a record about being heartbroken and breaking hearts, years of feverish living, harebrained schemes, and raving-mad relationships, testing boundaries and breaking them all down. Oval - Oh 12" (Thrill Jockey) .................................................. After nearly 10 years of silence Markus Popp's Oval project is back. A spectacular departure from the deconstructivist electronica that made him a laptop legend. Instead, and totally out of nowhere, this 15-track EP establishes Popp as an accomplished musician, who is delivering a glimpse of his very own exciting flavor of "free" music in the best sense of the word. This is Oval like you have never heard him before. The 25 minute Oh EP will be followed by Oval's brand new LP in August. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - MOJO (Reprise) .................................................. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time. MOJO has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that the Heartbreakers have done before. It's the kind of album nobody's supposed to be able to make anymore. Racebannon - Wrap the Body 12" (Joyful Noise) .................................................. Decade-strong Bloomington juggernauts Racebannon have released numerous albums on Secretly Canadian and Southern Records. "Wrap the Body" is their most adventurous effort to date - a DJ 12". This is a seasoned "noise-core" band's attempt at a club dance song - complete with instrumental & a capella versions, remixes by Chicago's Kid Static & Yea Big, and on 180g vinyl. Robyn - Body Talk Pt 1 (Interscope) .................................................. The last time we heard from Robyn, the diminutive Swede was riding high after top 10 hits with bittersweet, orchestral-pop hit Be Mine and anthemic dance ballad With Every Heartbeat. The latter song went to number 1 in the UK, shortly after the album Robyn was nominated for a Grammy. Not only did these feats provide a brilliant backdrop to the Platinum selling album from which they sprang, but the success of Robyn was the high point of a comeback which saw the one-time teen popstar reinventing her career on her own terms. 3 years later, and the singer is set to release a triple album in 3 installments. Body Talk Pt 1 picks up where Robyn left off, with the emphasis on those sweeping, emotional dance tracks and the biting, quirky rap-pop with which she made her name. Gabor Szabo - Jazz Raga (Light in the Attic) .................................................. The world famous Impulse Jazz catalog is so cavernous, you truly need a music-minded flashlight to uncover its deepest and darkest secrets. Thankfully, Light In The Attic has recently acquired such luminescent technology and the first discovery is Szabo's Indo-fusion landmark, Jazz Raga. Combining Szabo's distinctive six-string touch and open-minded ideas, it brings together Jazz, Pop-Rock, and his native European influence, along with hypnotic sitar, stoned bass vibrations, occasional Psychedelic vocals, and the laidback, yet totally in the pocket, Latin/R&B infused backbeat of #1 session drummer, Bernard Purdie. We Are Scientists - Barbara (MRI) .................................................. We Are Scientists return with more bubbly chorus', jittery rhythms and popping bass than you can shake a stick at. The band has a new drummer and nothing has stopped the band's Keith Murray from delivering his usual blend of 80's affectations and pop clatter. Jackson Browne & David Lindley - Love Is Strange (Inside) .................................................. Jackson Browne & David Lindley's Love Is Strange is a chronicle of their 2006 Tour of Spain, performing in Madrid, Barcelona, Oveido and Sevilla. The experience is expressed by Jackson Browne as "a CD of some recorded moments, or perhaps a bridge, or a small door, between a life lived mostly in America and time spent with some really good friends in Spain." Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions (Partisan) .................................................. Recorded late last year at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York, The Black Dirt Sessions is a deeply personal record from Deer Tick and most especially from lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley. It is the sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out. "The Country-rock breakthrough of the year" - Rolling Stone Jamie Lidell - Compass (Warp) .................................................. Recorded in LA, NY and Canada, Compass is Jamie's most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It's got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it's sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It's the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator. Jamie's fellow travelers on Compass include Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. The Jayhawks - The Bunkhouse Album (Lost Highway) .................................................. The Jayhawks' Bunkhouse Album is the debut from the alt-country pioneers originally released in 1986 on Bunkhouse Records with a pressing of only 2,000 vinyl copies. This hard-to-find album is finally available on CD and again on vinyl for the first time in nearly 25 years. The Jayhawks features Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Norm Rogers. After listening, it's clear why the band became a catalyst in what would be coined "alt-country". Tift Merritt - See You On the Moon (Fantasy) .................................................. See You On the Moon is Tift Merritt's most visceral work to date. ÊAt heart, the album is a profoundly focused Tift doing what she does best better than she ever has - poignant writing and performing welded to the steady pursuit of new places. ÊFor this project, Merritt recruited producer Tucker Martine, best known for his work with The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, & others. ÊJoining the 'Moon' sessions were, among others, celebrated pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz and My Morning Jacket's Jim James. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
