There are a number of "big" releases this week, but we here at Landlocked believe in supporting all things local. So we want to give a special shout-out to one of our favorite bands in Bloomington, drone masters Tammar. The five piece have a new album, "I Live Here Now." The songs were culled from three live performances at Bloomington's Russian Recording Studio. Keep fighting the good fight by supporting local bands and record stores! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/03/2010 .................................................. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (Merge) .................................................. Written, arranged, performed and produced by the Arcade Fire and co-produced by Markus Dravs, The Suburbs was recorded around Montreal and New York over the past two years. A number of live shows by the band have already been confirmed beyond the album's release, including headline appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the end of August. Autolux - Transit Transit (TBD Records) .................................................. Los Angeles shoe gazers return with their long, and I do mean long, awaited second album. Six years of label trouble, writer's block, and family matters caused the delay. But Transit Transit sees them returning to form with drony guitars and layers of bliss that will leave you remembering JAMC inspired early-90s rock very fondly. Bun B - Trill OG (Rap-a-lot) .................................................. One half of legendary Southern rap group, UGK, Bun B returns to put the final touches on his solo trilogy, hence the title. Bun has put past troubles, including the death of Pimp C, his UGK partner, behind him by returning to his roots. And by roots he means a sonic foundation built on Southern choirs and organs. The album includes a track featuring beyond-the-grave verses from Tupac and Pimp C. David Dondero - # Zero With A Bullet (Team Love) .................................................. # Zero With A Bullet, the latest installment in a rich musical canon, further cements Dondero's place alongside the great American songwriters. At the root, he is an observational songwriter - an archivist of both autobiography and fiction, as well as those dark and out of the way places where the two inevitably intertwine. This album ripples with humor and despair, trademarks in his unique body of work. Coming to the Bishop on September 23. El-P - Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 (Gold Dust) .................................................. As the album title implies, EL-P creates a dark, dystopian sonic universe filled with ominous basslines and thumping, punishing drums. Comprised of original instrumentals as well as remix instrumentals to Kidz in the Hall's "Driving Down the Block" and Young Jeezy's "I Got This," Weareallgointoburninhellmegamixxx3 represents songs that were meticulously crafted yet never found a home on a proper release. While sonically different from J Dilla's instrumental masterpiece Donuts, that album would prove inspirational to EL-P. jj - no2 (Secretly Canadian) .................................................. In the summer of 2009, Gothenburg, Sweden's JJ quietly released one of the year's most critically acclaimed albums. The album JJ No. 2 was the group's debut full-length (their first single was JJ No 1). Secretly Canadian is proud to join forces with Swedish label Sincerely Yours for the worldwide release of this remarkable record. JJ create R&B and balearic dub from the ghosts of lost lovers; pop as delicate as a fawn's nose across blades of frosted grass. They recently played a memorable show with The XX at the Buskirk-Chumley. Mt St Helens Vietnam Band - Where the Messengers Meet (Dead Oceans) .................................................. While it has only been 18 months since Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band's self-titled debut, they have traveled what feels like thousands of miles. Where The Messengers Meet is in real time, an expansion of the sound of the band's eponymous debut. They take the same frantic and skewed elements and stretch them out, giving them room to breathe and blossom. Thematically, Where The Messengers Meet is an exercise in contrasts: the delicate and gentle, the dark and furious. Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band collects powerful compositions into one cohesive whole held together with lush production and a haunting atmosphere. Night Horse - Perdition Hymns (Tee Pee) .................................................. Night Horse have an unique ability to blend the classic sounds of hard rock and blues music with a much needed breath of contemporary fresh air. If Sonic Youth had been immersed in an ocean of Allman Brothers inspiration, or Soundgarden had been steeped in late 60s Fleetwood Mac, then they might have turned out something like this. Night Horse take traditional blues-rock, spark it up with riotously noisy ashes and drag the rhythms through an early 90s grunge experience. Moreover, they're cohesive, charismatic and compelling. Shapes & Sizes - Candle to Your Eyes (Asthmatic Kitty) .................................................. After a rigorous touring schedule, Shapes and Sizes settled in Montreal. There was a feeling of resolution, maybe even hibernation. They carried out their daily chores: one sold books, another records, one studied music and perception while delivering groceries at night, and another never kept her eyes too far from the road. But all this while, the band was quietly tinkering. You see deep down, Shapes and Sizes never really settle. Each record starts where the previous left off, and forays into new territory. Radwan Ghazi Moumeh (A Silver Mt. Zion, Tim Hecker) recorded the album. Tammar - I Live Here Now (St. Ives) .................................................. With the release of I Live Here Now, Bloomington, Indiana's Tammar gets the Peel Session that, in another place and time, would have surely been due. Captured over three live performances at Bloomington's Russian Recording in July/August of 2009 and mixed by Zero Boys' Paul Mahern at Echo Park Studios, this collection of post-punk anthem variations is a testament to why Tammar is one of the midwest's most exciting bands, be it in the live setting or when laid to tape. Versus - On the Ones and Threes (Merge) .................................................. On the Ones and Threes is the band's first LP in ten years, and possibly their best. They remain a band of contradictions, gritty yet melodic, serene yet explosive, and balanced on the brink in a way that has become somewhat of a lost art. On the Ones and Threes is something of a return to form, featuring the re-appearances of original member Edward Baluyut, and engineer Nicolas Vernhes (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Cat Power, Spoon). Wavves - King of the Beach (Fat Possum) .................................................. King of the Beach, the new Wavves album is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat catharsis and 60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation. Unlike Wavves' previously released material, recorded in haphazard bursts on Nathan Williams' laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi with producer extraordinaire Dennis Herring (Camper Van Beethoven, Modest Mouse). The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) .................................................. Each album has a review and enables you to listen to the entire album before you buy it. Give 'er a spin! Hot Hot Heat - Future Breeds (Dangerbird) .................................................. On Future Breeds, Hot Hot Heat returns to its roots both metaphorically and literally with a hot-wired and proud party album throbbing with spontaneity and creativity. When the band began writing Future Breeds, front man Steve Bays, along with band mates Paul Hawley and Luke Paquin, sought to recapture the energy and sheer love for the art form that drove the late-nineties Vancouver punk scene from which the band emerged. We Are Scientists - Barbara (MRI) .................................................. We Are Scientists return with more bubbly chorus', jittery rhythms and popping bass than you can shake a stick at. The band has a new drummer and nothing has stopped the band's Keith Murray from delivering his usual blend of 80's affectations and pop clatter. Sarah McLachlan - Laws of Illusion (Arista) .................................................. Long awaited 2010 album from the multi-platinum and Grammy-Award winning singer/songwriter, her first studio album of new material in seven years. Laws Of Illusions was recorded in Montreal and Vancouver with Sarah's longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand. Sarah has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide since her recording career began in 1988 with her debut album. Each and every one of her albums has been certified Gold or Platinum. Features the first single 'Loving You Is Easy'. Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love (Fantasy) .................................................. From his days in the now legendary punk/alt-country outfits The Nuns, Rank and File and his own True Believers, to his glowingly received solo gems including 2008's Real Animal, Escovedo has built a rapturous underground following among fans, songwriting peers and critics alike. His highly anticipated Fantasy Records debut, Street Songs of Love, is a 13-track celebration of survival, liberation and ultimate salvation. Delphic - Acolyte (Dangerbird) .................................................. In a world of indie bands dipping a cautious toe into dance music's occasionally baffling computer world, Delphic are post-dance futurist nostalgics from Manchester who have managed to take repetitive beats and crisp electronics out of the underground to emerge as one of the UK's most exciting new bands. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
