If there is anything here at Landlocked that we like more than recorded music, it is live music. The proof is in the following pudding: On Monday, Aug. 16 at the Bishop, Landlocked is sponsoring a night with live rock from The Moonhearts (Tic Tac Totally Records, from San Fran) + dudes from Landlocked spinning righteous jams on the decks before/during/after. It starts at 8 and is a measly 4 bucks. We are really really excited about Sunday August 22, when we are hosting a show in the store. Another great Bay Area band, Bare Wires will grace our "stage" along with Charlie and the Skunks. 7pm and $5 for that one. See you there! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/10/2010 .................................................. The Budos Band - III (Daptone) .................................................. Coming off a recent amazing live show at The Bluebird, we could not be more excited for the next Budos record, and we are not disappointed. Truly menacing funk grooves, a forest of furious rhythm and percussion, snaky guitar lines, and sharp horns. They have it all and flaunt it. Grass Widow - Past Time (Kill Rock Stars) .................................................. Grass Widow formed in 2007 and quickly received attention within the Bay Area as well as national underground press via publications like Yeti. Influenced by similarly all-female punk and post-punk acts like The Neo Boys and Kleenex, they also note Roy Wood's The Move and The Kinks as a major source of inspiration, which can be heard in their three-part harmonies, complex arrangements and odd chord progressions. Dan Mangan - Nice, Nice, Very Nice (Arts and Crafts) .................................................. The first Vancouverite on the Arts and Crafts Roster, Nice, Nice, Very Nice is Mangan's first album for the lable. Beginning with its reference to a Kurt Vonnegut poem, Nice, Nice, Very Nice is classing Mangan, brimming with irreverence that aims to capture the absurdity of life with astounding honesty and wit. Mangan effortlessly leads listeners through a true range of emotions, complete with earnest affection every one of us can appreciate. Eli Paperboy Reed - Come and Get It (Capitol) .................................................. Eli ÒPaperboyÓ Reed, a Boston-via-Delta South soul singer who conquered both street corners and punk clubs with a mix of grooved-out rave-ups and slow-burning ballads. Sounds like your favorite Motown and Stax Records livened up for the Winehouse era. Starflyer 59 - The Changing of the Guard (Tooth and Nail) .................................................. You have come to expect Starflyer 59 to be the most reliable, most dependable, yet most undeniably unpredictable messengers of album after album of quality independent rock tunes. Over ten albums deep, over fifteen years time, from the early guitar-heavy shoegazing era to the ethereal moodiness of The Fashion Focus years to the latest incarnations and recreations of themselves as keyboard-driven masters of chorus, this is and always will be a band who will deliver great songs with new sounds. Stornoway - Beachcomber's Windowsill (4AD) .................................................. Stornoway began quietly one freshers' week at Oxford University, when lead singer/songwriter Brian Briggs approached Jon Ouin (keys/banjo/electric guitar/cello) and asked if he happened to like Teenage Fanclub. They began playing music together soon afterwards. A short while later they were emboldened enough to enter the college talent competition, where they were runners-up to a group of Norse singers, and received a consolation prize of a large bowl of fruit. Now they are on 4AD and bring their infectious pop ditties to you. Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World OST (ABKCO) .................................................. The latest Michael Cera starring film to mine the "indie aesthetic," this soundtrack mixes songs from the fake real bands in the film and then a bunch of old and new songs from some of your rel favorites from the "B" section of the record store, including Beck, Black Lips, Frank Black, and Beachwood Sparks. You can smell what we are cooking here. Animal Collective - Oddsac DVD (Plexifilm) .................................................. ODDSAC is a feature film collaboration between the band Animal Collective and filmmaker Danny Perez. Oddsac is a dense and surreal layering of audio and visual elements that eschews conventional narrative to create a visceral viewing experience. This is truly a "visual album" whose songs will not be released in any other form. It features an original score with new songs from the band and complex digital manipulation by Perez. DVD package includes the 55-minute film, with new songs and score by Animal Collective, and 40-page art book. .................................................. Each album has a review and enables you to listen to the entire album before you buy it. Give 'er a spin! Hot Hot Heat - Future Breeds (Dangerbird) .................................................. On Future Breeds, Hot Hot Heat returns to its roots both metaphorically and literally with a hot-wired and proud party album throbbing with spontaneity and creativity. When the band began writing Future Breeds, front man Steve Bays, along with band mates Paul Hawley and Luke Paquin, sought to recapture the energy and sheer love for the art form that drove the late-nineties Vancouver punk scene from which the band emerged. We Are Scientists - Barbara (MRI) .................................................. We Are Scientists return with more bubbly chorus', jittery rhythms and popping bass than you can shake a stick at. The band has a new drummer and nothing has stopped the band's Keith Murray from delivering his usual blend of 80's affectations and pop clatter. Sarah McLachlan - Laws of Illusion (Arista) .................................................. Long awaited 2010 album from the multi-platinum and Grammy-Award winning singer/songwriter, her first studio album of new material in seven years. Laws Of Illusions was recorded in Montreal and Vancouver with Sarah's longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand. Sarah has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide since her recording career began in 1988 with her debut album. Each and every one of her albums has been certified Gold or Platinum. Features the first single 'Loving You Is Easy'. Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love (Fantasy) .................................................. From his days in the now legendary punk/alt-country outfits The Nuns, Rank and File and his own True Believers, to his glowingly received solo gems including 2008's Real Animal, Escovedo has built a rapturous underground following among fans, songwriting peers and critics alike. His highly anticipated Fantasy Records debut, Street Songs of Love, is a 13-track celebration of survival, liberation and ultimate salvation. Delphic - Acolyte (Dangerbird) .................................................. In a world of indie bands dipping a cautious toe into dance music's occasionally baffling computer world, Delphic are post-dance futurist nostalgics from Manchester who have managed to take repetitive beats and crisp electronics out of the underground to emerge as one of the UK's most exciting new bands. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
