Thanks to all who came out to the Moonhearts show last night at The Bishop - they were great! It all came together pretty last minute but a good time was still had by all. If you missed em, you can make it up to us by coming to Landlocked on Sunday, August 22nd for a special after hours performance from Bare Wires. 7PM, $3. What a deal! Bare Wires nods to the bubblegum chomping, power pop stompers of 70s glam rock. Released on John Dwyer's (Thee Oh Sees) Castle Face imprint, the ten songs on Seeking Love boast handclap heavy, stadium-ready production reminiscent of Gary Glitter and Slade, while still speaking to the sincerity and authenticity that has become Melton's songwriting trademark. Opening the show will be locals Charlie & the Skunks. Don't miss it! And if thats still not enough to float your rock boat merrily down the stream, mark your calendars for October 1 & 2. Why? We'll let you know soon. Stay tuned. Its a big ole can o' worms. .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 8/17/2010 .................................................. Chief - Modern Rituals (Domino) .................................................. In 2008 the members of Chief finished school, left NYC and returned home to the west coast with their suitcases stuffed full of soaring melodies, shimmering guitars, lovelorn lyrics and heart-stopping harmonies. Their debut album, Modern Rituals, is as rich and expansive as it is personal and intricate. This is a record so teeming with joyful desperation that you'll want to hold onto it with all your might. Modern Rituals is not only a radiant, cohesive and effortlessly captivating introduction to a formidable new band, its a contender for most contagious album of the year. Darker My Love - Alive As You Are (Dangerbird) .................................................. LA quintet Darker My Love are proud to announce the release of their new album, the follow up to the band's breakthrough sophomore album 2, which received across-the-map critical acclaim for its mind-bending neo-psychedelic grooves and hazily anthemic hooks. It was recorded at San Fran's legendary Hyde Street Studios with producer Nick Huntington and is the band's most musically focused and emotionally direct collection to date. Matthew Dear - Black City (Ghostly) .................................................. Black City can't be found on any map. It's a composite, an imaginary metropolis peopled by desperate cases, lovelorn souls, and amoral motives. Like most literary gothams, Black City is a place to love and hate, as seedy as a nightclub's back room and as seductive as the promise of power. Matthew inhabits a sound-world unlike any other: a monument to the shadowy side of urban life that bumps and creaks, shudders and wakes up screaming in the middle of the night. Michael Hurley - First Songs LP [reissue] (Folkways) .................................................. A self-taught folk singer and guitarist, Michael Hurley plays music reflective of his upbringing in the rural backcountry of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Recorded when he was 22, First Songs was released in 1965 and is described by album producer and recording engineer Frederic Ramsey Jr. as "less frenetic, more in-looking, more expressive" than his early "rambling" days on the road. HurleyÕs compositions from First Songs and other albums have been recorded by many contemporary artists including Espers, Vetiver, The Violent Femmes, and Cat Power. 12 tracks, 50 minutes, with liner notes which include Hurley's biography and song lyrics. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier (Columbia) .................................................. The new studio album from the legendary metal band! To celebrate Iron Maiden's 15th studio release, their first in 4 years, fans can look forward to a deluxe version of The Final Frontier CD with exclusive bonus content in a special package. Also available will be a double LP picture disc for vinyl fans. Ray LaMontagne & the Pariah Dogs - God Willin' (RCA) .................................................. His 4th studio album. Entirely self produced, the album was recorded in 2 weeks at Ray's home in the woods of western Massachusetts. With Ray's vocals at the forefront of the songs and a loose, almost live sounding recording, the album stands as a testament to a band at the height of their powers. The newly coined 'Pariah Dogs', consists of Jay Bellarose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Patrick Warren (keyboard), Eric Heywood (guitar) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel). Individually these musicians have contributed to the live work of such heralded musicians including Beck, Joe Henry, Tom Waits, Lucinda Wlliams, Ryan Adams and Joe Cocker to name a few. Free 7" with purchase! Lissie - Catching a Tiger (Fat Possum) .................................................. Catching A Tiger, predominantly recorded with producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Norah Jones, Modest Mouse) in Nashville, TN, is every bit the vibrant debut promised by last fall's Why You Runnin' EP, which introduced the heartland native, California transplant Lissie. John Mellencamp - No Better Than This (Rounder) .................................................. In an age of auto-tuned, computerized recordings, John's approach on his Rounder debut is refreshing. The entire album was recorded with he and his band all playing live in one room using a 55 year-old Ampex tape recorder and just one vintage microphone. Legendary producer T Bone Burnett captured (alongside our own local engineering guru Paul Mahern) the stunning 13 new originals at 3 historically important locations: Sun Studio in Memphis, (where Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis all first recorded); the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA (the oldest Black church in the US, dating to 1775); and in Room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio (where Robert Johnson made his first recordings in 1936). The songs reflect classic American musical traditions including blues, folk, gospel, rockabilly, and country. John and his band are playing TWO shows at IU Auditorium 10/29 and 10/30! Red Mass - s/t LP (Florida's Dying) .................................................. Red Mass creates dark, driving, and repetitive apocalypse-punk that's unique to Montreal. Their dissonant and disjointed dark-wave eventually erupts into hypnotic noise. The sound and vocals range from the low preach of Bad Seeds-era Nick Cave to the severe rants of Fear's Lee Ving, all bound and gagged with acidic guitar solos revived from long-dead Eddie Hazel. Skream - Outside the Box (Tempa) .................................................. The highly anticipated follow up album to Skream's monster debut 'Skream!' is finally here! 'Outside The Box' is undeniably Skream's most 'pop' offering to date. Skream's signature production style is not lost here though, hard slapping snares, tough beats and deep bass remain. The tuff but soothing heart-beat of'Fields Of Motion' and bass-wobbling dubstep 'Wibbler' could still rock DMZ's dancefloor. La Roux, Murs and others guest on vocals. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Let It Sway (Polyvinyl) .................................................. Like many long-named buzz bands, SSLYBY makes charming, affable pop music worthy of its playful name. Its home-recorded debut, Broom, sounded like Rivers Cuomo forgot his distortion pedal for Weezer practice. With Pershing following in April, the band is set to remind fans that someone still loves Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. - NPR. Produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Beau Sorenson (Sparklehorse), Let It Sway is the eagerly awaited follow-up to critical success darlings Broom and Pershing. Esperanza Spalding - Chamber Music Society (Heads Up) .................................................. Centuries ago, long before the advent of radio or recording technology, chamber music was the music for the masses - the music in which people from nearly every segment of society could find meaning and relevance. A decade into the 21st century, Esperanza Spalding - the bassist, vocalist and composer who first appeared on the jazz scene in 2008 - takes a contemporary approach to this once universal form of entertainment with Chamber Music Society. A place where connoisseurs of classical music and jazz devotees - and fans of other musics as well - can find common ground. The recording offers a chamber music for modern times - one that brings together people of different perspectives and broadens their cultural experience, just as it did in an earlier age. The Toadies - Feeler (Kirtland) .................................................. It was a long told rock and roll urban myth, Toadies made a record in 1997 entitled Feeler which was meant to be the follow up to the critically acclaimed, platinum selling Rubberneck. They spent months writing, demeoing and finally recording their follow up. Interscope decided it wasn't good enough and shelved it. They've chosen their favorite songs and are finally unleashing them on an unsuspecting world. Brian Wilson - Reimagines Gershwin (Universal) .................................................. Brian Wilson has re-recorded and re-imagined 12 classic songs from the Gershwin Brothers and collaborated on 2 new Wilson/Gershwin compositions. The Gershwin estate gave Wilson access to rare, unfinished pieces of music by George Gershwin, with which Brian crafted collaborative compositions unlike anything the world has heard with "The Like in I Love You" and "Nothing But Love". Wilson chose to record George and Ira Gershwin songs because he considers the late composers of classics like "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Summertime" as a critical influence on him. LP version next week. .................................................. The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!) .................................................. Following up on their 2007 release Time On Earth - their first studio recording in 14 years - the internationally acclaimed Crowded House deliver Intriguer. Produced by Jim Scott (Wilco), this all-new recording brings together singer/guitarist and chief songwriter Neil Finn with original Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour and keyboardist/guitarist Mark Hart. Says Finn: "Intriguer is exotic in parts, traditional in origin. It may just be the best thing we've done." Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul (Capitol) .................................................. Dark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse with photography (and two vocals!) provided by director David Lynch. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, the afore-mentioned David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt. Tom Jones - Praise & Blame (Lost Highway) .................................................. This is Tom Jones going back to his roots on an album of gospel, blues, traditional and country songs, wearing his heart on his sleeve, emotionally raw and true. Recording with producer Ethan Johns at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios coaxed the most exhilarating performances out of the singer and with musicians including Booker T Jones, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings at hand, Tom has quite simply delivered his tour de force. Los Lobos - Tin Can Trust (Shout) .................................................. The Grammy-winning East L.A. band Los Lobos is releasing Tin Can Trust, their first collection of new original material in four years. Featuring powerful rock 'n' roll, blistering blues, two Spanish-language tracks (a cumbia and a Norte–a), and even a Grateful Dead cover, the album is classic Lobos through and through. And, like many of their albums, it is an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived, dealing largely with the economic challenges many people are facing today. Los Lobos has a national tour co-headlining with John Hiatt in August, with aggressive schedule continuing throughout 2010 and 2011. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (Merge) .................................................. Written, arranged, performed and produced by the Arcade Fire and co-produced by Markus Dravs, The Suburbs was recorded around Montreal and New York over the past two years. The Arcade Fire's 2004 debut Funeral featured strongly in Album of the Decade Polls around the world including NME, Pitchfork, Guardian, Mojo and Rolling Stone. Their 2007 follow-up Neon Bible, debuted number 2 in the U.S. Both records were nominated for Best Alternative Album Grammys. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
